AMLC EXEC. DIRECTOR RONEL BUENAVENTURA TESTIFIES ON VP SARA’S ALLEGED UNEXPLAINED WEALTH

#VPSaraOnTrial Day 33 RECAP: Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Atty. Ronel U. Buenaventura took the witness stand as the impeachment court continued hearings on Article II of Vice President Sara Duterte’s case over alleged unexplained wealth. Buenaventura presented AMLC records showing several corporations connected to Duterte, including Cale88 Foods Corp., which received over ₱319 million in transactions from China and Hong Kong.

Defense lawyer Mark Vinluan questioned whether Buenaventura had the authority to appear in court and challenged the AMLC’s use of combined transaction figures, saying they made the amounts “mas malaki tignan.” The defense also objected to how the AMLC presented its records. Later, lead counsel Sheila Sison argued that the defense should have more time before cross-examining Buenaventura. Presiding Officer Chiz Escudero called a short recess to address the issue.

00:00Sir, can I stand and raise your right hand?
00:04You, Ronell Benaventura, do swear that the evidence you shall give in the case now offending between the Philippines and
00:10Vice President Cyrus Zirman Mando Torte shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. So help
00:16you, God.
00:16Yes, thanks very much.
01:0485.75 po, Your Honor.
01:0685.7. Eh, sorry, Your Honor, naalala ko lang po.
01:10That's 5.7 percentage points more than yung 80 percentage points na nakuha nung kakilala namin ni Attorney Benluan.
01:19Anyway, it appears that the prosecution is not being entirely truthful with this Honorable Court
01:26because they're flashing a document, Your Honor, but it seems that the document, comparing it from the original, was cropped.
01:33Because in the original document, prior to the date, Your Honor, there is an annotation that states strictly confidential.
01:42And the document here, as appearing in the screen now, as flashed on the screen, does not contain that portion,
01:49Your Honor.
01:49Just to manifest for the record.
02:22When you appeared before the House Committee on Justice on April 22, 2026,
02:30did you obtain a prior written authority of the three council members?
02:38Your Honor, the authority granted was pursuant to our information exchange guidelines,
02:44which the council already approved in 2022.
02:48So that is an authority granted.
02:52There's a provision there which authorizes me to appear
02:56whenever we're subject of subpoena with competent authorities, Your Honor.
03:01We all saw the amount of papers that this witness had to sift through.
03:08And there was even a length of time when he had to pause
03:13because he had to look at the documents, Your Honor.
03:16We're not trying to delay this proceeding.
03:19On the other hand, are we also rushing this hearing?
03:25Because we're not asking for a lot of time, Your Honor.
03:28We started cross-examining this witness at past 5 p.m.
03:47We had to skip past 6 p.m.
