00:00Hey, Drake, first of all, congratulations, and thanks for coming on, man.
00:04What's going on? Thanks, guys.
00:05So, Will Campbell, after the game, was asked about you,
00:08and he told the press, quote,
00:10we're in the huddle on the last drive, and he made that throw to Chisholm,
00:13and I said, you're the best in the effing world to him.
00:16And everybody in here believes in him and knows what he can do
00:19and bring to this team, and I think it showed today.
00:22So, Drake, after a back-and-forth season to start the season,
00:25how does that feel to hear your teammates say that about you?
00:29I mean, I feel like that was the kind of feeling all week.
00:32I feel like the teammates and guys around us really believed in each other
00:35and believed in me, and I think we went out there and put that on display.
00:41I still think there's still some juice left to squeeze, as they say,
00:45and we've got some plays we left out there.
00:47But, no, it definitely felt good to get that one, and it means a lot,
00:50coming from a guy like Will playing his butt off,
00:53and it's definitely been a big part of what we're doing.
00:56Was there something that you did this week or in practice
00:59or in preparation that made you feel,
01:01I think this week's going to be different?
01:04No.
01:04I mean, I wouldn't say – I mean, you try to attack each and every week.
01:07I think when you're going in there in a division opponent
01:09that you know you've got to play good football.
01:11I think there's definitely a little heightened awareness
01:15and heightened focus where we've got to play well to win the game,
01:18and I think that was kind of what we felt like offensively
01:21and realized that with how our defense is playing,
01:24and we've got to step it up.
01:26I guess, Drake, C.J. Gardner-Johnson of the Bills,
01:28still not sold on Efton Chisholm.
01:30I'm sure you saw his quotes after the game,
01:31called him a practice squad player and won't hear from him again.
01:34Did you have any reaction to that?
01:37No, I don't have to say too much about that.
01:39I think, you know, obviously we got the last laugh yesterday,
01:41and we'll see them again down the road.
01:43So we'll see where it goes then.
01:46Frabel said today that Efton has earned some more opportunities.
01:49How does that strike you getting to see him a little more in the lineup?
01:54I think, like I said, the press conference after the game,
01:56you watch training camp, you see who's making a bunch of plays,
01:59and that's 86.
02:00And I think it's cool to see guys in this league get rewarded
02:04for putting in the work and just putting his head down
02:07and keep on working.
02:08So it's really cool for me to be a part of it.
02:10I thought, like I said, after the game,
02:12I thought his catch over the middle was just as good as –
02:15I mean, not just as good.
02:16That catch at the end was pretty sweet.
02:18But, no, I'm just happy for Chiz.
02:20And like I said, he works his butt off
02:21and is always asking after practice to stay after.
02:24And, you know, in the night facility, hey, what do you think of this?
02:29And he's just proud of Chiz,
02:31and he's going to make some more plays for us for sure.
02:33Drake, you seemed a lot more comfortable in the pocket this week.
02:36Was there something this week that maybe helped kind of change,
02:40whether it was the plays that were being called
02:42that made you feel more comfortable,
02:43which led to having you more success this week?
02:47I think it's trusting the guys up front.
02:49I've even been playing their butts off all year.
02:50Just trusting the guys up front,
02:51standing in there and trying to let it rip
02:53and give our guys a chance to make some plays.
02:54So that's what I'm going to continue to try to do
02:56and each and every week is try to stand in their firm
02:58and try to deliver the football.
03:00You know, you've now experienced the extreme ends of the NFL pretty quickly.
03:03You know, obviously Jacksonville isn't the kind of game you want to have,
03:06and then you have this huge road win in Buffalo.
03:08Is there, you know, anything that even this far into your NFL career
03:12in your third year that you've learned about how dangerous it is
03:15to kind of let yourself get too high or too low any week?
03:19I think Coach Rabel has always reminded us, you know,
03:21to don't ride the roller coaster.
03:23And Coach McDaniels has been a great help of having gone through these for many years,
03:27especially up here in New England and in this area where I think one of the best things
03:32about this area is we expect to play good and to win.
03:34And I think that's one of the best things about having high expectations is you've got to be,
03:38you know, it's every day, it's every week in this position
03:40and realizing how much my play impacts, you know, the game
03:43and knowing that I'm going to try to do my best every week.
03:46And it's not that I'm not trying, it's just sometimes you perform better than others.
03:49You know, Drake, we talked to Kevin Byard, and he was saying that, you know,
03:52he usually doesn't like to listen to the noise that much,
03:54but something slipped through the cracks,
03:55and he saw that there was this NFL power rankings from last week
03:59that he felt disrespected on.
04:01And does, A, do you hear any of that stuff?
04:05And B, does Mike sometimes slip it to you guys as inspiration?
04:09Does he use bulletin board material to get you to show you guys
04:14and you can use it as you will?
04:17I think one of the best things about Coach Bray was he doesn't really, you know,
04:20use much bulletin board, you know, material.
04:22He kind of is able to fire us up and gets motivated just as a natural way of coaching.
04:26And he always has, you know, some references from, you know, other sports
04:30or other athletes or, I remember last year showing about horse racing
04:34and kind of leading the pack and staying in the lead.
04:37And then he mentioned a few other things, you know, throughout the season
04:40that were just good, really, comparisons.
04:43And I think Coach Bray does a nice job of not really, you know,
04:46taking too much to what other teams say and try to rile you up
04:49and realizing, you know, in this, you know, with the way that the NFL is
04:54and how many people will care about it and talk about it,
04:56you really have no idea who's behind rankings or all that.
04:59And they could probably never touch a football in their life.
05:00So it's hard to really respect somebody's opinion outside of people
05:04you're really in the building.
05:06We heard he showed you the Allen Iverson-Tye Lou clip as well during the week.
05:10What did you take? You're a good basketball player.
05:11What did you take away from that message?
05:14Yeah, the message was be the answer.
05:16And I think it was looking around us.
05:17You know, nobody out there is going to help you.
05:20It's just going to be on us and on us to band together and be the answer.
05:23So, like I said, another example of him, you know,
05:26fires up in a different way and not having to use
05:28whatever the teams say or players say.
05:31So, Drake, there is, you know, obviously the Bills have this new stadium.
05:35By the way, congratulations on being the first team to beat the Bills
05:38in their own new stadium.
05:40But they, like, there used to be stories, you know,
05:43Ted Johnson's told us for years they would pull up to the old stadium
05:47and there would be people yelling at the bus, throwing stuff,
05:50and they saw all the shenanigans in the parking lot
05:53and it was just, like, a rowdy crowd.
05:54Is that still there with the new stadium?
05:56Do you guys still get, like, crap from the fans as you go in?
06:00Or does it seem almost like a little more, like, kind of classy now?
06:05Is that part, is that element of being a Bills fan still there?
06:11Yeah, I don't want to, you know, answer that to Raul
06:13or give anybody else anything to talk about.
06:16But I think you still felt, you know, obviously you're still, you know,
06:19riding in the bus, you see the classic fans giving you the finger
06:23and everything and the yelling in the stands.
06:25So I think that's really every place you go to.
06:27But, you know, definitely I think Buffalo's had that mentality of,
06:31especially against us, and I think they want to keep it that way.
06:34Obviously you and Romeo Dobbs hooked up for some big catches in the game, Drake.
06:37What can you tell us about Romeo?
06:39When we see him, he does not seem that excited all the time.
06:43But, you know, when you're with him, when the cameras aren't on,
06:46does he, do you see the, or is he just even-keeled all the time like that?
06:50He's pretty even-keeled.
06:51I think I really, really enjoy watching him when he celebrates and makes a play.
06:54I think we enjoy watching him, you know, show some emotion
06:56and realize that he's a big-time player for us
06:59and he just wants to do things right and he's eager to learn,
07:02eager to do things right and keeps on doing things right.
07:04He's going to get a lot of chances to make plays,
07:07and he did that on Sunday.
07:08You know, Drake, there's been a lot of people this morning and afternoon
07:12who have been asking themselves, you know,
07:14I loved what I saw from this Patriots team yesterday,
07:17and they said, we just want to know, is this the real Patriots team?
07:22What would you say to those people?
07:25I would say, I hope this is the start of building, keeping proven.
07:30I think this is definitely, you know,
07:32it's hard to say in week four this is going to be the real team.
07:35You know, we've still got some guys that you're looking forward to having back
07:38and are obviously missing some guys on Sunday that are a big part of what we do.
07:41So I think that's how we want to play and how we want to play in moments of the game
07:46that, you know, can lead to wins in the second half.
07:48But at the same time, I think we're going to keep on trying to, you know,
07:51improve and realize that, you know, if we stay the same,
07:53then teams will, you know, surpass us.
07:55So we're going to keep on trying to get better
07:56and knowing that we're going to need some better football ahead to get where we want to go.
08:00All right, Drake, it's time for Ask May Anything.
08:02Our listeners have submitted questions, non-football questions to Drake.
08:06And we have three today, and this is brought to you by Northeast Men's Health,
08:10the experts in treating men's sexual health with seven New England locations.
08:13Learn more at northeastmenshealth.com.
08:15All right, Stiz, play the first one.
08:16My name is Jacob, and what's your favorite team growing up?
08:22My favorite team growing up, I'm assuming it's the NFL.
08:24I grew up in Charlotte, so I was a big Panthers fan and went to a lot of Panthers games.
08:27But really, I really enjoyed watching, you know, good quarterback matchups.
08:31So anytime on TV, especially kind of Sunday night, Monday night,
08:35growing up as a kid when I wasn't, you know, playing sports and got a chance to watch.
08:38It was definitely fun to watch.
08:40How great was Cam Newton, man?
08:41Was he your guy back in the day?
08:44Yeah, he was.
08:45And even before that, I think, you know, Jake alone and some guys.
08:48And really, I think kind of even in college, you know,
08:51I really enjoyed watching some of the quarterbacks.
08:53So I was a big Panthers fan.
08:54And then kind of as we got older and just kind of became a fan of players' games
08:59and great quarterbacks around the league.
09:01What did you think what Cam said about the Patriots?
09:03They're fool's gold.
09:04He said that last year.
09:05We had some fun with that.
09:06What did you think?
09:06I mean, this guy obviously is someone you respect and you liked,
09:09and then he's, like, ripping on the team.
09:10What was your opinion of that?
09:12Oh, I mean, he's paid to make claims and try to get everybody.
09:16That's social media and really, you know, podcasters nowadays
09:20to try to make big claims and try to get more views.
09:22So that's probably what people like to do nowadays.
09:26When someone does something like that, do they ever reach out to you?
09:29Do they ever, like, you know, say, hey, I know I said this.
09:31But have you ever had somebody who was, like, in the media say something about you
09:34and then reach out and be like, hey, man, I know I said this.
09:37And, you know, it might not be the nicest thing.
09:39Has that ever happened?
09:42No, it hasn't happened with me.
09:43You know, I really talk with a bunch of media members and text or call a bunch of them.
09:49So it's really just funny to me how when you're a player, you know,
09:53and the media's in the locker room, nobody wants to talk to them.
09:56And then when players are done playing, they kind of become the media.
10:01It's always funny to me seeing that happen.
10:03Are you looking for a future in media after you're done?
10:07Are you looking to be like Tom Brady?
10:09Everybody seems to be – I don't want to be hypocritical,
10:11but everybody seems to take that path.
10:13So I don't want to exactly be one of the people I'm talking about becoming myself.
10:18But, like I said, it is what it is.
10:22A lot of these guys are making more money in broadcasting afterwards
10:24than they ever did in football, which is absolutely insane.
10:27But, yeah, I mean, listen, you've got to get –
10:29you've got to knock Kevin Byard out of the way first.
10:31That guy's got a future absolutely in media.
10:33He's fantastic.
10:34All right, let's go for sure.
10:36Yeah, he's great.
10:36Let's go to question number two.
10:37So, Drake, this is Jay from Animate.
10:40If you weren't playing football, what do you think you'd be doing for a living?
10:44How about that?
10:45What a question.
10:46Oof.
10:48I think I would love to be coaching high school football.
10:51I think I'd love to pour into kids' lives and try to share my experiences.
10:55If I happen to play in college and didn't make it to this level,
10:59I'd love to try to help kids around back in my area of finding their way
11:04and coaching football, basketball, anything I can.
11:07I really like enjoying being around kids, especially in sports,
11:10and trying to impact their lives.
11:11Yeah, you should hook up with Matthew Slater.
11:14He's doing high school football over at B.C. High right now.
11:17I heard that.
11:18I heard that.
11:18I texted Slate something, so I heard that.
11:20I know that's – I mean, Slate.
11:21Let me talk about being one of the best people to learn from
11:26and listen to Slate's man.
11:28The year I was my rookie year around him, he was unbelievable.
11:32Yeah, good dude.
11:33It's perfect for him.
11:34He's absolutely perfect for that position.
11:36All right, let's do our final question for Ask May Anything.
11:38Let's take a listen.
11:38Hey, Drake, what a game yesterday, buddy.
11:42I had faith in you, and I never lost it.
11:45My question for you is this.
11:47What wild conspiracy theory out there do you actually kind of secretly believe in?
11:56Wow, how about that?
11:57Let me try not to get too controversial.
11:59Let me think.
12:01That's a classic Bostonian on that phone on the end of that other line right there.
12:06I don't know about the moon, you know.
12:08I think it's – I can see back in the day of why we would put on the mask if
12:16we went there,
12:16but I'm not really sure 200% if we went there or not.
12:19I wouldn't say I'm leaning one way or the other.
12:21I just know I'm a little bit skeptical.
12:24Drake, you and I, right here.
12:26I've always been a we-weren't-on-the-moon conspiracy.
12:29I think it was Stanley Kubrick who did the entire thing.
12:32He has put clues in all of his movies that he was the guy that directed the moon landing.
12:38Drake, there's so much literature out there.
12:40You know what I'll do?
12:41I'll just forward it to you because I've read all of it.
12:43So it's not crazy.
12:45I absolutely believe we didn't land on the moon.
12:48I don't know.
12:49Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I took a conspiracy class in college, actually.
12:56Oh, did you really?
12:57Which was pretty cool.
12:58Oh, that's awesome.
12:59What other ones did they study in your conspiracy class?
13:02They studied, obviously, Hitler being alive and are birds real?
13:06Some of the classic ones that you hear about.
13:09What is the birds real one?
13:11Because I've seen, like, stickers that say that birds aren't real.
13:13Like, what is the conspiracy behind that?
13:16Just like the government has a say in some of the, you know, things, you know, birds flying around
13:21and whether they're videoing or listening or something along the lines of that.
13:26That's it.
13:27All right, I'll have to do more research on that one.
13:28Well, Drake, congratulations, man.
13:30That was an awesome game, and it must feel good.
13:33I mean, you could see in the locker room how this was a big one for you guys.
13:37So congratulations, and way to go.
13:40Let's keep it going next week.
13:42Thank you, guys.
