00:00on a Patriots Monday, which means Drake May will be joining the show, hopefully in a good mood,
00:06because, damn it, it was nice seeing him smile afterwards. He couldn't hold it in.
00:09It's got to be a massive relief if you're him. Also, Kevin Byard III, a very good performance
00:15by the defense as well. And with us right now, let's not waste any time, Mr. Ted Johnson,
00:21live from NBC Sports Boston. What's up, Teddy J?
00:24Okay. Fellas, what a game. Was that just not, you know, it's been a minute since we've seen
00:31the team look that good, right? I mean, my gosh, maybe going all the way back to the last regular
00:35season game against Miami, where Drake, you know, was good in that game, and he was,
00:40it's been a while since we've seen him, you know, be efficient and make plays, and it was awesome
00:46how guys, you know, kind of took, you know, kind of stood up and replaced guys, you know,
00:53when Matt Collins went down. I thought it was a gutsy effort. I thought the defense came to play.
00:59I thought they had an awesome game plan. Both coordinators, Zach Corr and Josh McDaniels,
01:04were exceptional in this game. I was, it was great to see, because I've been hard on Josh,
01:09but, you know, as the show goes on, I'll give you some stats to kind of back up what my
01:14eyes were
01:14seeing from Josh. Just an excellent game plan from Josh and both Zach Corr. That's a huge,
01:19huge win for these guys, and it just feels like, okay, they've maybe figured some things out. I
01:25have to assume that this is really the team that they are more than what we saw in the first
01:32three
01:32games, so a really, really huge gutsy win for the patch yesterday. Ted, the one thing I was thinking
01:37while watching that game is you could take almost every criticism from last week and flip it on his
01:43head. Like, you know, Drake May for three weeks looks like a shell of himself. How about three touchdowns
01:47and 54 yards on his feet? Josh McDaniels. How about an offense that produced 405 yards? Oh, we got 143
01:54rushing yards. It was like a balanced attack. Romeo Dobbs. I mean, two touchdowns. We'll forget
02:00about his awful turnover for a second. And how about, I remember last week we were saying, where the
02:05hell has Hunter Henry been on a milk carton for the last three weeks? Catches all five balls thrown his
02:10way for 65 yards, no drops, four first downs. And he's evolved immediately in that 97 yard
02:17first drive that they had. It was just almost as if you could have made like a check, like check
02:23boxes. And they checked almost every single complaint that we had last week. Almost every
02:28complaint, except Kyle Williams didn't show up, but somebody did instead of Kyle Williams.
02:32And Teddy's been all over Efton Chisholm, you know, since going by maybe the last year,
02:36Ted, I don't know if you've been high on him since then, but now I've got to consider that
02:40this is Welker, Amendola, Edelman, Chisholm. I mean, I know it's only one catch, but it was,
02:47that was a shock to the system. It was a coming out party, Ted. What did you, what did you
02:51think
02:51of his game yesterday? Cause you've been a fan for a while. I thought it was, I thought
02:56it was excellent. I mean, the kid, you know, here's the deal. You know, this team does not
03:00have a lot of really high end catch and run guys. Demario Douglas is the worst at that.
03:07I mean, he basically catches the ball and then gets tackled for, for no yards after
03:11that. Efton Chisholm will fight. He's scrappy. He's, he's tougher than what, you know, people
03:16think. And I also think he's a better kind of suited player for that slot position. He
03:23can just, he reads defenses better than Demario Douglas. Demario Douglas, I'm kind of out
03:28on. I just, I don't, I think, you know, we've been trying to fit him in this offense.
03:32I just don't think he's a good fit. I think, I think Efton Chisholm is a way better fit.
03:37So hopefully what he did yesterday garners more, more opportunities and more reps down
03:42the road here. Ted, I'm trying to think, you know, if, can you think of a time where you
03:47were on a team that for an extended period of time, I know it's been three games where the
03:53offense was just awful. I mean, the defense has been, has been definitely good in most of the
03:57games, but like, can you think of a time where things have just been so bad and almost like
04:02a light switch, everything just gets back to what you were. Can you think of a time where
04:08that happened on a team you were on and, and what the difference between last week and that
04:12week was?
04:14Yeah, it's, it's, it's really hard to explain. I mean, you know, I've, I've, I've been on
04:19teams where you're trending positive, where you're, you're, you're kind of starting to figure
04:23things out. Um, but from an offensive standpoint, I mean, it's, it's, it's kind of crazy to
04:29think what this offense looked like to the first three weeks. I mean, it was the worst
04:33offense in the NFL, 10 points to one of the better offenses, six points, 29 points.
04:38Yeah. It's really, it's a matter of fact, we, we said this last week, that was the worst
04:43game of the Drake may era. And yesterday you could look at, if you just kind of look at
04:48what it meant and especially for him, that was one of the best games of the Drake may
04:53era. Yep. Can I, can I give you a couple of maybe reasons why? Yeah, sure. I would love
04:57to know. Allow me. Yes. So, um, the Patriots, uh, used motion, uh, at the lowest rate of any
05:05team through the first three weeks of the season, hardly motioned, didn't put any stress on the
05:11defense, didn't make the defense adjust, didn't make the defense communicate. Uh, so it
05:16was, it was kind of very static offense and I was critical of Josh. I mean, I just, you
05:20could see it. It just, there really wasn't any creativity or innovation in this offense
05:25until yesterday. They motioned 75% of their snaps where they had motions involved in the
05:33motions makes the defense think it makes them react. It makes them adjust. It gets freeze
05:38guys up like Hunter Henry to, uh, get, get, uh, unabated into the route faster. Uh, so he
05:45can make plays and it helped Efton Chisholm on that, uh, final touchdown throw, uh, to
05:50get open. So he wasn't getting jammed at the line. So the timing worked out great. So
05:55there was, it looked like to me, it was less audibles, less check with me's less of Drake
06:01kind of changing the original play into something else based on what he saw. I think they just
06:07said, you know what, we're just going to moat. We're going to try and get an advantage
06:11by motioning guys and getting the defense to have to think and react. And it worked
06:16perfectly. So I just don't understand. And they use more play action in this game than
06:22they did all season long. So the play action, the motions, and they, I have to also give
06:27them credit for the, the running game didn't look all that impressive in its totality, but
06:32the running backs had 27 carries between the two of them for an average of 3.3 yards per
06:37carry that doesn't, you know, really blow your skirt up. I get that, but they, they
06:42controlled the game with time of possession. They had the ball for eight minutes more than
06:45Buffalo. So it kept Josh Allen on the sideline and, and all of those runs set up the play
06:52action perfectly. And so it was a really well executed game plan, a great game plan. I don't
06:57know why we can't start the season with this stuff. I was just going to say that. Did you
07:02notice in the game at one point during the ID Eagle discourse with Ross Tucker, they said
07:06they met with Josh McDaniels and he said to paraphrase, eh, it's early. We didn't have
07:10much of a preseason and it's like, well, yeah, you didn't have much of a preseason
07:14because you treated it like they were totally meaningless. This could have been, you could
07:19have been seeing this offense three weeks ago. It's, it's just, I don't understand their
07:24mentality with that. I don't, they're, that's a Belichick thing. I mean, I mean, there's,
07:29there's historically, you know, Belichick sometimes doesn't get off the fast start and
07:32he always just uses it. Well, the first month is an extension of the preseason, man, what
07:37the hell are you doing all those OTAs for? What are you doing in training camp? If, if
07:41not to, I don't know, come out guns blazing. So that mentality I've, I've never
07:45understood. You know, what's crazy is that, so now the four game gauntlet is finished
07:49that we've been talking about it ever since the schedule was released, these first
07:53four games. And despite how they got there, this team is two and two through what we were
07:59all calling the toughest stretch of the schedule two and two with a divisional win, mind you
08:03that doesn't feel so bad now. Does it Ted? It feels, it feels, are you kidding me? It
08:09feels really good. Right. Cause so, I mean, the first really kind of thing that they, they're
08:14trying to achieve is to win the division. So if they would have lost to Buffalo yesterday,
08:18it would have really felt like the divisions out of, out of reach, but they won against their
08:24division foe and the Buffalo bills. So that's now on the table. Like, you know, I
08:29don't, I think I forget exactly how Vrabel kind of phrased it, but it was, it's like,
08:33you know, it kind of, they're back on track or they saved the season or whatever. I mean,
08:37the vibes were low. I mean, there, this was kind of a house of cards a little bit. If
08:43it went ugly yesterday, it could all come tumbling down, but he did it. It went the other
08:48way. And you heard the, all the guys, you know, you know, having a good time in that
08:53locker room after the game, this confidence collectively is going to rise up and be at
08:59an all time high. And you know what you hope is they do this year, what they did last year
09:05when they went in and beat Buffalo, I think with the two and two record, I think it was
09:09week five and beat Buffalo in Buffalo. And then they went on to win 10 games. I'm not
09:13saying they're going to win the next 10 games, but it feels as if this kind of win and the
09:17way in which they did it, where they controlled for the most part, at least on defense, their
09:21line of scrimmage, that this feels like it's kind of got them on track and that
09:26they're, they're going to figure things out from here on in. And their next six
09:29games before the bye week, they only, they play two winning teams currently right
09:33now. One of them is Chicago. That's probably an underdog shot on the road on
09:36Thursday night. The other one is the Raiders this week, of course. Yeah. And I
09:39don't know if they're going to be underdogs or not. Maybe I'll check the line
09:41here, but you think that's four and two is totally reasonable for this stretch.
09:45Don't you think? I mean, Raiders, Jets, Bears, Dolphins, Packers, Lions. Listen, all I
09:49could say is that my prediction of 13 wins is still on the table. Oh, baby. It's
09:54alive. It's still alive. Jackson's the only one that picked him to win. Good job, Jack.
09:58Good job. That was literally the first thing I texted. I was like, yeah, Stiz did
10:02too. Yeah, we both did. Oh, you did? I'm sorry. They did. And they, they knew, they
10:06knew. And as I said, I was like, there's no, I was, I said, it's going to be a moral
10:10victory Monday. Hopefully. That's what I was hoping. And sure enough, man, it was more
10:14than that. That is that you, they couldn't have had a win at a better time and they
10:17looked really good. I mean, it wasn't, that wasn't like one of those accidentals
10:21will fall into this win. That was an emphatic, we are back. Uh, and I, and, and they
10:27had the, they had the, uh, they had the, uh, moral victory kind of sewed up, uh, at
10:31halftime. I thought I was like, it's gravy after halftime. Yep, absolutely. All right.
10:35Six, one, seven, seven, seven, nine, seven, nine, three, seven. We will have Drake
10:38May and Kevin Byard, the third, uh, coming up at some point during the show, but most
10:42likely it's probably going to be this hour. We don't know. Everything's kind of
10:46always up in the air with those guys, but, uh, we will take your calls as well. Six
10:49one, seven, seven, seven, nine, seven, nine, three, seven is yesterday. Completely change
10:53your outlook for this season. Are you in the 13 win club as well? We'll take your calls
10:57next.
