Drake Maye joined the show on Patriots Monday to talk about the big win against the Steelers, whether he is having some hesitation on throwing deep, facing off against a childhood idol in Aaron Rodgers, and more!
Transcript
00:00Hey, Drake, thanks for coming on, man. We appreciate it.
00:03Yeah, what's going on?
00:04So on a Victory Monday, is this the only thing you have to do?
00:08Like, are we kind of the jerks for ruining the day off?
00:12No, no, no. I went in, went in, you get in, go and check in with coaches,
00:16get a lift in if you want, and then go back out, go back in on Tuesday tomorrow.
00:21So Victory Monday, coach does a good job of getting in if we need to do anything with our bodies
00:25and can get a lift if we want, so he leaves it pretty open.
00:28But, no, this is definitely something, this is my biggest mandatory thing I have to do, yeah.
00:35Is Victory Monday, is it one of those things where if you don't show up there,
00:39like, I mean, obviously, you being the quarterback, it's a different deal,
00:41but if you're another player and you don't show up, you get judged,
00:44even though they said it was your day off?
00:47I wouldn't say that. I mean, the word Victory Monday, I think, is meant for real.
00:51I think Coach Ravens means it for real, unless you, you know, if you're banged up in the game,
00:55you definitely have to go in. I'll say something about that.
00:57But, no, I think Victory Monday, he means it. I think he means it.
01:01Are you able to enjoy the win, Drake, and have you gotten better at that through the years,
01:05even if it's maybe not your perfect game that you wanted, still being able to relish a W?
01:10I think you have to. I think you have to, in this league, you know, take the wins
01:14and realize how important winning is in this league and, you know, how hard it is at the same time.
01:20But also, you've got to look at kind of what we left out there, and especially on offense,
01:24you know, what we have to do to, you know, get going.
01:27And so, in the season, you're figuring things out, you're figuring out the guys you are within the huddle
01:31and battling some injuries, and we've still got to keep on going
01:34and realize that better football is ahead and know that what we have to do to change that
01:38and start from practice and executing and doing the little things.
01:41So, Drake, it is interesting because, you know, last year you had one of the best deep balls in football.
01:46Is there a hesitation creeping in after some of the interceptions that you've had recently
01:50that's making you pull back on throws that you would normally trust?
01:54I wouldn't say that. I mean, you can't.
01:56It's hard to, you know, change my playing style.
01:59My playing style is what it is, and I think sometimes there's a time and place for everything
02:04and realizing that, you know, when it's there, you know, take a chance.
02:07We hit some ones yesterday and also realizing when, you know, kind of some of the underneath stuff
02:11can open up the deeper stuff.
02:12So, that's what it is, and I'm not, you know, sorry.
02:17I don't think too much about it, but at the same time realize that, you know,
02:20protective football is the number one priority.
02:23What are you eating right now, Drake?
02:26No, I'm sorry. I'm eating some peanut butter balls. I don't like to make it.
02:30Okay.
02:30That's what I'm saying.
02:32It sounded like it there. That's okay.
02:33Listen, I eat on the air, and trust me, you can do whatever you want here.
02:38I do want to quickly ask you about, you know, because the sheer amount of those big chunk plays,
02:45you know, it feels like, so what is it?
02:47Do you believe that there's less of those right now because, like, defenses have kind of done
02:52a better job scheming against you guys, or is it on, like, the offense's side, like,
02:58trying to fix something and make it work?
03:00Like, is it that they're better, or you guys just have to figure out a better way to get
03:05it downfield?
03:06I think it's hard to pinpoint one, you know, either or.
03:09I think it was a, you know, definitely part of it, too, of some teams playing some more
03:14softer zone, and there's definitely some parts of it where, you know, we have some chance
03:17to hit some, and it's whether it's a throw or details in the route, but, you know, we
03:21hit a few yesterday, and I think it's something you don't want to, you know, put too much
03:24emphasize on and realizing that sometimes the more you try to, you know, make a big play
03:31is oftentimes more when it hurts you and kind of when some just come naturally.
03:34So, I think it's, you realize the weapons that we have in that skill room, and sometimes,
03:39you know, the big plays can come from a four-yard pass or a pass underneath that the guys can
03:44break tackles and realizing that the more plays we have, the more of those will come.
03:47Speaking of that, Drake, Travion had the big touchdown run.
03:50When you watched it back, who had the best block on that play?
03:53Several good ones in there.
03:55Well, I think it starts with big mo.
03:56I think those guys up front, if they create the first lane, and I have the best view in the
04:00house, I always tell those guys, some of these runs are awesome for me to watch.
04:04And then I saw Pop right after the, literally, I was running down to see Travion.
04:08I saw Pop and said, you know, his block was really the one that sprung the touchdown.
04:13So, it would have been a big game, but Pop's game, Pop's block definitely helped it turn
04:17into, you know, a touchdown.
04:18It looked like the running game took a step forward.
04:20How much different does the offense feel for you when you're getting that kind of production
04:23on the ground?
04:24Yeah, you know, running football in this league is what this league is about.
04:27You know, you're running the football and stopping the run, and Coach Braves always,
04:30you know, says that, and team meeting rooms.
04:32So, realizing that, you know, the running the football is kind of, is part of our identity
04:37and part of setting the tone.
04:39And, you know, against a physical team like Pittsburgh, it's tough.
04:41You know, they're good up front, they're good in the front, and realizing that these
04:44things can open up the passing game.
04:46And definitely when, at the end of the game, when they know we're going to run it, that's
04:49the, you know, I felt like one of our best things last year was, you know, ending
04:52the games off in five minutes and realizing that it's hard to run a ball in that scenario,
04:56but at the same time, you know, leaning on it and, you know, having a hat on the hat
04:59can open up some good things.
05:01You know, Drake, I've always thought, and, you know, whenever we meet, like, athletes
05:05or people in entertainment and stuff like that, you know, I'm not very starstruck unless
05:08it's someone that was a huge star when I was a kid.
05:12And, you know, Aaron Rodgers, I have to think that growing up, you probably watched
05:17him and maybe even studied him.
05:19You know, what is it like seeing a guy like that and now knowing that you're playing
05:23against him, seeing that he's been in the league for so long, and probably somebody
05:26that, you know, as I said, when you were younger, you may have, you know, tried to study and
05:30be like?
05:32I was fortunate enough to grow up in an era of quarterbacks that was really cool.
05:36I think you had a chance to see, obviously, Tom here, Peyton and the Colts, and Peyton
05:41going on to the Broncos, Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben, Phillip Rivers, Drew Brees.
05:46I feel really fortunate to grow up in the time span that I did of watching these quarterbacks
05:50and really getting to see, you know, really every Sunday, and, you know, especially the
05:55ones at night that you really sat down and watched, you know, to appreciate the quarterback
05:58play.
05:59And Aaron Rodgers was one of them, you know, one of my favorites to watch growing up.
06:03And, you know, his arm talent and the way that he just plays the game with emotion, I
06:07think, is one of the coolest things.
06:09So, I was a big fan of him.
06:10I've always been a big fan.
06:11And it's always cool playing, you know, one of your favorites growing up and realizing that
06:17that's you playing against him across the field now.
06:19So, he's still moving around.
06:21That's what I told him after the game.
06:22He's still moving around good.
06:23He's running around, making plays, and definitely fun to watch.
06:26And I know our defense, I know he's probably feeling this more.
06:30Our defense is just getting after him.
06:31He's kind of a douchebag now, huh?
06:35I wouldn't say that.
06:36He's been great to me.
06:37So, I can only, you know, speak on, you know, my personal experience with him.
06:40And he's been awesome to me.
06:42Yeah, ever since he started doing that ayahuasca stuff, he started speaking.
06:45As a matter of fact, Sis, do you have any of those clips that we played the other day?
06:49He started speaking like Yoda and kind of like giving you like philosophy on the world.
06:54It's very odd.
06:55Have you heard him speaking about his drug trips that he's done?
06:59I have not.
07:00I have not.
07:01I know he started that podcast.
07:03I think people have been talking about where he's being really honest.
07:06I think it's pretty funny.
07:07So, I'm sure he's got a lot of stories.
07:09And, shoot, he's a great player in this league.
07:11And he's a Super Bowl MVP winning quarterback.
07:13So, he's got something to speak about.
07:15I'll give you a sample, Drake.
07:16Here's something he said.
07:17As the bat animal card instructs, the death of the ego is followed by the rebirth.
07:24And the integration of that is a sunrise.
07:27Any idea what you think that means?
07:30I'm not 100% sure.
07:33If I maybe had it in front of me, I can maybe try to dive into it.
07:36But, you know, I'm sure he's something that he feels like he's spent a lot of time on.
07:40And it's something that he cares about.
07:43Obviously, there's some merit to it.
07:45Hey, Drake, any chance Mike and when you comes back this year?
07:48Have you got any good and positive news on your guard today?
07:52Yep, I haven't.
07:54I don't have anything to share.
07:55Obviously, I'm fortunate with Big Mike.
07:57You know, what a great player.
07:59And, you know, I know that he's going to fight to get back as quick as possible.
08:03And he's been a great player and played at a high level.
08:05So, it's always tough.
08:06You know, since my rookie year, he's been in there every time.
08:08You know, play different positions.
08:10And just always a team player.
08:12So, I guess we'll wait and see.
08:14And just a bunch of injuries, not only with you guys, but around the league as well.
08:17I'm sure you saw Jaden Daniels go down.
08:18Does it kind of hit different when you see guys you came into the league with taking hits like that?
08:23Or suffering injuries like that?
08:25Yeah, it's a bummer, man.
08:26You hate to see it.
08:27I think you see, you know, Jaden, what he went through last year and injuries as well.
08:31And, you know, it's always guys that, you know, personally you feel for.
08:34But that's a sport, man.
08:35It's a gladiator sport.
08:37And you realize, you know, you just got to be blessed and thankful for every game you go on and
08:41come out healthily.
08:42And thank the good Lord.
08:43So, it's a brutal game.
08:46But at the same time, it's rewarding.
08:47You know what, Drake?
08:48Speaking of injuries, from your same draft class, you know, Caleb Williams was injured yesterday.
08:52It was pretty scary at first.
08:53But there was good news that came out today that it looks like it's just a low-level hamstring injury.
08:58And, matter of fact, he's not even ruled out for this weekend.
09:00So, he obviously escaped what seemed to be something, when you saw it, looked pretty bad.
09:04But the first thing I thought of was, unfortunately, oh, no.
09:08The Madden curse strikes again.
09:11If you were ever offered the cover of Madden, knowing that freakish history of what happened to the people on
09:15the cover, would you accept it?
09:18Oh, wow.
09:19I hadn't thought about that.
09:21The Madden curse was something me and my brother talked about.
09:23That was a funny thing growing up.
09:25But I don't think it's really, you know, that big of.
09:29I mean, you guys mentioned it.
09:32And, obviously, social media takes it, you know, for what it's worth.
09:35But any time you grow up playing a game of Phantom Madden, I think it's a pretty hard honor to
09:39pass up.
09:40It's like three-quarters of the people on it have something that happens.
09:44It's like around, like, 65 percent that, yeah, it's pretty wild.
09:50And I saw that yesterday.
09:51I was like, man, I don't know.
09:52But you're right.
09:53I mean, I love that game.
09:54And growing up, it was so much fun.
09:55I don't know how you can say no.
09:56But at the same time, after you say yes, you're kind of looking over your shoulder, I would think, Drake.
10:01Nah, I don't think you can look over your shoulder.
10:03I don't think that's in the hands that played any card.
10:06I think it's either unfortunate or just unlucky.
10:11Something to build on, Drake, with you and Romeo Dobbs and some of the chemistry there,
10:14particularly when you get out of the pocket and he can move?
10:18I thought he made some big plays, made some nice catches.
10:21I think the one deep one, I may be giving a lead a little more and he ends up scoring.
10:24So, definitely more opportunities where I feel like we can get him involved.
10:27And I'm looking forward to seeing him grow each and every week.
10:29And I know he's a great player.
10:30And it was cool to see him share some emotion after he made his plays.
10:32Do you think that the interception was tipped?
10:37I haven't seen.
10:38I haven't seen.
10:39I was trying to look at it, you know, in film this morning.
10:42I'll take a close look at it.
10:43I thought I put some more juice on it than maybe where it ended up.
10:46So, it's hard for me to say.
10:47You never know when, you know, guys get their hands on.
10:50And some of them have always, you know, Pittsburgh was one of the best teams in the league at it.
10:54So, you know, it's hard to say.
10:55I can't really, you know, tell close enough.
10:57But, you know, you've got to make smart decisions when we get down there and, you know, that close.
11:01It looks like it.
11:03As a matter of fact, I mean, it's all over social media right now.
11:05And the consensus seems to be that it was indeed tipped.
11:08So, if you watch the video, I have a feeling you're probably going to see exactly what everyone else is
11:13drawing the conclusion of it, that it was tipped.
11:16Yeah, I still think, you know, the decision to force it down there is, you know, you kind of, you
11:22know, the result.
11:22You don't really try to coach the result.
11:24You try to coach the, you know, really the decision.
11:27So, that's how I think about it.
11:28All right.
11:28Well, it is time for Ask May Anything, and it is brought to you by Northeast Men's Health, the experts
11:34in treating men's sexual health with seven New England locations.
11:37Learn more at northeastmenshealth.com.
11:39I actually have the first question, and that is, what is the strangest thing that you've ever been asked to
11:43sign?
11:46Oh, the strangest thing that I've ever been asked to sign?
11:48Man, I always think it's crazy to me when people really ask me to sign their actual skin, whether it's
11:55their arm or kind of created into a tattoo, or sometimes it's even, you know, really on their, I think
12:01maybe one time I got to sign a forehead.
12:02I always think, you know, the natural skin is always the weirdest for me.
12:05I'm like, are you sure?
12:06So, that's probably for me.
12:07There's a story that I saw out there that someone asked you to sign a Mac Jones jersey.
12:11Is that true?
12:13I always kind of, you know, when I'm in training camp after the, you know, practice, I go out there
12:19and try to sign some autographs, and any time I try to check the last name on it to make
12:23sure, you know, because I really think it's cool when someone has my jersey to give them an autograph, I
12:26try to make sure to catch everybody.
12:28Okay, so you may have accidentally signed a Mac Jones jersey by accident.
12:32Well, I'll probably definitely sign some Mac Jones on accident without checking scene number 10 and just rolling.
12:38All right, let's go to one of our first listeners.
12:41Let's hear what their question is.
12:43Hey, Drake, it's Polly and Saugus.
12:45I was just wondering if you've ever smoked weed before.
12:49I've never smoked weed before.
12:51That would be a no, and I have not, so I'm not sure.
12:56You know, I don't know how to answer that.
12:58That's a draft prep question when they used to ask that.
13:02They always used to warn you about drugs, but no, it really wasn't, you know, around it growing up, so
13:06it never happened.
13:07Isn't it wild that they still have a problem with weed because it's legalized most ever.
13:11I know in Massachusetts it is.
13:12Does the NFL still look down on it, and, I mean, is that still as big of a thing that
13:19they don't want you to do?
13:22I'm not really 100% sure.
13:24I mean, they know they test us for it, so I'm sure they're trying to minimize it at some point,
13:29but at the same time, I know there's a lot of benefits to it.
13:31So, you know, people that do, and I know some players in this league that make it feel like it
13:36helps their body
13:37and helps them, you know, use their muscles, so I'm sure there's some benefits to it,
13:41and I just didn't grow up around it.
13:42Yeah, and it's non-addictive, too.
13:44You know, I got to think that, I mean, that would be nice, so it seems all these painkillers people
13:47are getting addicted to,
13:48so, you know, a little bit of weed, not too bad.
13:50But maybe, maybe when the season's over, you can go to a Dave Matthews show or something
13:55and have yourself a good time.
13:57Yeah, I'm not sure that would be me, but...
14:00What is the best concert you've been to, Drake?
14:03Ooh, best concert I've been to?
14:06Ooh, that's a question right there.
14:07I saw Keith Chesney in the Sphere.
14:09That was probably one of the coolest ones, obviously, you know, him being a Pats fan as well.
14:13So, Keith Chesney in the Sphere was pretty sweet.
14:16Yeah, the Sphere's unbelievable, isn't it?
14:19I thought it was sick.
14:20I thought it was pretty cool.
14:22You heard about it, and my parents had been, so it was definitely cool to be in there with some
14:26of my brothers,
14:28you know, seeing Keith Chesney.
14:29We were down there on the floor, so it was pretty sweet.
14:31That's awesome.
14:32All right, well, Drake, thanks for calling in.
14:34Once again, Drake May here on a Patriots Monday.
14:37We have him on every Monday.
14:38Appreciate it.
14:39Hey, congratulations on the win, man.
14:40That's, it's nice.
14:42It's got to be nice to, your home opener, to walk away with a win no matter what happened.
14:48Thank you, guys.
14:49Go pass.
