00:00Hey Boomer. Hey guys, a winning Monday. It doesn't get much better than this, does it?
00:05Well, much better than it was last year this week or last week here.
00:10I, I, it seems like from the start of that game, Mike Rabel was going to coach very aggressively.
00:16Did, did you feel the same way Boomer? I did feel the same way. And I think maybe this is
00:20the way
00:21to get Drake may back on track. And I know I said a lot of things last week that were
00:25somewhat
00:25controversial when I was talking about drastic measures and drastic times and all of these
00:30different things, but somebody got the Drake may, he looked so much more composed yesterday.
00:35You know, I know he had the interception, but you know, when he ran, he ran with purpose.
00:40He recognized the blitz late in the game. The last drive was everything that, you know,
00:46an MVP candidate that we saw last week was supposed to do this year. And, you know,
00:51the previous three games were just an absolute disaster. And then yesterday,
00:55you know, on the road in Buffalo, uh, the first time the Buffalo bills lose in Highmark stadium
01:01and to do it the way he did it. I mean, that's the kind of performance that you expect every
01:05week
01:05from that young man. And that's the pressure of being a starting quarterback in the NFL
01:09and putting on tape, what you put on tape last year against maybe weaker opponents. But then
01:14this year you come back, you struggle the first three games. And then all of a sudden yesterday,
01:19he turned into the MVP caliber quarterback that we saw last year.
01:23Boomer, even more impressive for me was the fact that you've got guys like Matt Collins going out.
01:28Obviously you've got AJ Brown, a knot in the game, but then Efton Chisholm steps up.
01:33How important is it for a quarterback like Drake May to be able to
01:36have those connections with not just one guy, but a bunch?
01:39I mean, what is this Julian Edelman and Julian, uh, Julian Edelman and, and Danny Emendola
01:45reincarnated with Efton Chisholm from Eastern Washington of all people. What a catch, what a play,
01:51uh, what a throw and what a, what a probably the most important throw of the year, especially if
01:57they can get the Patriots back on track. But I, I, you know, Courtney, it's, it's amazing. They,
02:04uh, I don't know out of Eastern Washington, uh, you know, where, where did Julian Edelman come
02:09from? Wasn't he a quarterback at Kent state or something like that? I mean, like it's really
02:13amazing. So hopefully for Efton, this is the start of something really special for him. And maybe,
02:19you know, he and Drake may can, uh, create, you know, some sort of relationship on the field where
02:25he trusts them. When you make a play like that, I mean, that is just, that is just an awesome
02:30play
02:30for that kid. I can't even imagine how he must've felt last night. You just imagine the text messages,
02:36imagine the phone calls that he's gotten from all of his family and friends around the country
02:41that saw that play. And it was just amazing. So, yeah, I mean, like, it's great when you watch
02:46young players make plays like that because you know, they're capable of it. You just don't know
02:51what happens when they step on the field in a professional football game and how they're going
02:55to react to the stress and the pressure. And to make a play like that at the moment that he
03:00did,
03:00you know, I'm just, I'm, I'm happy for him. And I'm certainly happy for Drake may making that throw
03:05under those circumstances, a little bit of a blitz. He saw it was one-on-one and I know exactly
03:12what Buffalo's defense is thinking. They're thinking, well, you know, this is not AJ Brown.
03:15This is, come on, this is Efton Chisholm. He can't beat us. And certainly enough, he did beat
03:20them and he made the great play. And what was really nice for the, for the Patriots was that they
03:25made
03:25the play on defense that sealed the game. So, um, I, I mean, that's, uh, that's exactly what
03:30they needed. Well, Boomer, uh, they should probably do their homework because 25 to 30%
03:35of the NFL is built by undrafted, uh, free agents. When you look at Drake may and you look at
03:42his
03:42performance, take us in the mind of the quarterback. Um, you play in that position before to go from
03:48feeling like you have zero confidence in everything that you're doing, or you're pressing,
03:53are you doing all these things to finally getting that game? What does that now mean for him moving
03:58forward? It should be big. Now, I don't know what's been going on all week long, you know,
04:03at, at practice. I don't know what Josh McDaniels is telling him in the meetings. I'm sure that Mike
04:08Vrabel is probably, you know, pushing him on practice. Tell him, you know, you're our leader.
04:12We believe in you. I'm sure they were working a lot, uh, with his mental, uh, stability,
04:18if you will, when it comes to playing quarterback and losing your confidence and making bad
04:22throws and bad decisions. So it, it, you know, when you do it on the road against a team that
04:27a lot
04:27of people think are going, you know, is going to the Superbowl, uh, in the AFC, then all of a
04:32sudden
04:32now your confidence should be sky high. So like, hopefully this rolls into the Drake may that we
04:38saw last year, more consistent, less mistakes. Um, and again, like, you know, he deserved the
04:44criticism. There's no question about it. And he knew it. I guarantee you, he knew it because he's
04:49probably wondering to himself, you know, why am I making these throws? Why am I making these
04:53decisions? So I wouldn't be surprised if they went back and looked at last year's tape, if you
04:59will, Jermaine, you know how they do that sometimes. I know baseball players do it when they, you know,
05:04go into a slump and they're, they're not hitting well. They go back and they look at some of the
05:08video from when they were hitting well and some of the decisions that they would make in the,
05:12in the batter's box. It's same for the quarterback. So I, again, we, we have to see more of this.
05:18This is one step in the right direction. And I would like to think that maybe the confidence
05:23is back there now. And hopefully the team's got confidence in him as well, which is just as
05:28important. Mike, uh, Boomer, Mike Vrabel yesterday was penalized for saying it was an effing terrible
05:35call, a 15 yard penalty. I have, I don't know about you. You've watched more of the NFL than I
05:41have,
05:41but I have never seen such a benign thing be penalized as an unsportsmanlike. What were your
05:46thoughts? And then what were your thoughts after Bill Vinovich after the game basically confirmed
05:50to Mike Reese, that that was what he was said. And that, yes, that is a penalty in the NFL.
05:56Well, can Trey McBride throw a flag on the official that tells him, told him to go F off yesterday
06:02in
06:02the giant Cardinal game is what I want to know.
06:04Goes both ways, right? It should go both ways.
06:07It should go both ways. I, you know, look, these, uh, you know, people really would, you'd be shocked.
06:12And I know that they have microphones down on, on the field and they had mics on us when we
06:17played
06:17the amount of language down there between player, between coaches. We saw Aaron Rogers yell at his
06:23head coach on Thursday night, get to F and play in. So I, I don't know. I think it's how
06:30you deliver
06:31the F bomb as opposed to the F bomb itself. You guys know what I'm talking about there. So
06:37I'm sure Mike Vrabel said it was such hate and disdain in his voice that the, uh, the referee
06:43said enough is enough and threw the flag. So I wasn't surprised that that happened, but I'm not
06:48surprised that anything that happens in the NFL these days, uh, this Patriots, this Patriots team
06:53gets the Raiders this week. They look like they're for real, maybe boomer. Well, you know, Kirk Cousins
06:59has done a really good job, you know, and, and you want to talk about one of the bright young
07:04coaches. We could say that Ben Johnson is one of those coaches, obviously at Detroit
07:07the last two years, he's been great and he's been winning with backup quarterbacks the last
07:11two weeks. And well, you know, Clint Kubiak is right there in that level of coaching. I
07:17mean, he is just like his dad and his dad obviously learned from the great Mike Shanahan when they
07:22had Terrell Davis and how to run the ball and play action passing seven man protections. And
07:28he has a quarterback in Kirk Cousins that will get everybody lined up, right. He'll make all
07:33the right decisions at the line of scrimmage when it comes to the past protections and
07:37Fernando Mendoza sitting on the, on the, on the bench watching all of this, just like
07:42Patrick Mahomes did under Alex Smith in Kansas city a few years ago. So yeah, the, the pay,
07:47uh, the, uh, the Raiders are much better than we all thought they were. And even yesterday
07:51they, they were a handful for the chiefs. That was a big game for them. And it's unfortunate
07:56they lost it at home. I think their fans were ready to really explode in that building
08:00yesterday, but you know, Patrick Mahomes and the chiefs are just too good. So this
08:04is not a knockover, a pushover team. So the Patriots will have to be ready and their defense
08:08will definitely have to be ready because they got, they got two tight ends that are
08:12unbelievable. And they also have Ashton Gentry, who is a pain in the ass to play against.
08:17So Patriots defense is going to have its hands full for sure.
08:21Buma, what is a Drake may have to do? Like you start to see some of the ball security
08:26issues in the pocket. I think when he uses his legs, he's able to put himself in a position
08:31where he can get away from some of those situations, but there's sometimes how to,
08:35as a quarterback, do you have to start figuring out, okay, the clock ran out. I either got to
08:40eat it or take off and run.
08:42Well, you know, that's all the fundamental practices that you do all week long. And, uh,
08:46they teach you how to hold the ball. They teach you when to move. Um, you know, some of this
08:50stuff also has to be like, you know, your intuition as a player. And I think sometimes
08:55he just thinks he has more time than he really does have. So one thing I saw yesterday, a
09:01couple of times where he, he dropped back and planted his back foot, the ball came out
09:05and that's the way it's supposed to be. You know, that's what Tom Brady used to do all
09:08those years. Very rarely was he sacked. You know, he didn't have the running ability
09:13that Drake has. So I think sometimes the athletic quarterback relies a little bit more on
09:19their athleticism and thinks that they can get away from people and make throws. Now
09:22I will say yesterday, you know, when he ran, he ran with purpose. He was their leading
09:26rusher. So I think watching him yesterday, there was a much more composed and a much more
09:33determined Drake may. And I think that's what they are hoping for that, you know, maybe that
09:39unlocked itself yesterday. And now as we move forward into the season, you know, he can get
09:44back to playing the way he did last year. So, you know, Jermaine, it's really a whole
09:47mental thing with us as quarterbacks. I mean, sometimes you feel like you got it going on.
09:52And by the way, let's, let's not forget, he lost his number one receiver. This AJ Brown
09:57was supposed to change the whole dynamic of the Patriots offense. And with him out there,
10:02and now you're thrown to, you know, Efton Chisholm, you know, it's a little bit different.
10:07It really is. It's different. So the fact that they had the success that they did on the road
10:12in Buffalo. And that is a huge win for Mike Vrabel and his team and for Drake May and his
10:18confidence. Boomer, you brought up the defense for next week, but looking back at this past
10:22weekend, they were able to limit Josh Allen to only four rushing yards. How much of that
10:28is to credit for the win last night? How much does yesterday's win fall for the defense?
10:34Let's say Josh has not had back-to-back games have not been great for him. Now, everybody knows that
10:40he is a marked man and everybody knows that he can kill you when he takes off, especially getting
10:44first downs and extending drives. So I would think that when you are a defense, you're thinking,
10:51okay, how do we, how do we limit that? And when you, when you actually do that and you put
10:56him
10:56in a situation where he can't get out of the pocket or he can't run with a football, it's such
11:01a huge
11:01aspect to beating the Buffalo Bills. I mean, he's a one man show. I mean, he is quite frankly,
11:07the most difficult quarterback to play against in the league. I know other quarterbacks may have
11:11better numbers and, and, you know, better completion percentages, but when you talk about
11:17just your overall football player playing that position, he is a literally a pain in the ass to
11:23play against. So bottling him up the way that they did yesterday and then him having two subpar games
11:28back-to-back is one of the reasons why, you know, now all of a sudden people are starting to
11:33question whether or not they truly are a Superbowl team. But I would just say that,
11:37you know, they'll get the 10 or 11 wins. Just like, I think the Patriots will get the 10 or
11:4111 wins because I think the Patriots have a better defense than the Buffalo Bills. And that was proven
11:47yesterday because you can win a game on the road in Buffalo against one of the most explosive
11:52offenses in the league. The question of the week for Boomer is brought to you by McFarlane Energy.
11:58We saw the Colts owner on the sideline during that game in London, asking why certain plays
12:04were being called in that game. You like an owner that is that involved, Boomer?
12:10No, no, I don't. I'm especially, I don't know. You know, the thing is, is that Al Davis used to
12:16do
12:16this and, you know, Al Davis was a football coach. So you could think that and understand why,
12:22you know, he would call down to whether it be John Madden or, you know, Lane Kiffin or whoever
12:27else was coaching that team and saying, play this guy, play that guy, call this play, call that play.
12:33This is a completely strange situation. And I know that she is really trying to understand the game,
12:40which I do give her a lot of credit for. I give her credit for really trying to be involved,
12:45but to be so like open about it and to be standing there wide open so everybody can see you
12:51and then
12:51opine on it, I think it's just a, it's just another distraction that Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard,
12:59their GM all have to deal with because she obviously is making herself known. I can't imagine
13:05Bob Kraft calling down to Mike Vrabel or going over to the coach's box and saying, Hey, Josh McDaniels,
13:12can we run another slant play with Efton Chisholm? I don't think that's going to be happening.
13:16So I'm not a big fan of that, but you know, she's an interesting character in the NFL and it's,
13:20I guess it's a great talking point.
13:23Boomer, Lars Anderson has a book out about Tom Brady, unauthorized biography. He spoke with over
13:29300 people that were quote close to him. And he believes that Tom is going to attempt a comeback
13:35at 50 because he wants to win eight Super Bowls. What are the chances of that happening? And if Tom
13:41Brady were a quarterback in the NFL today, where would he rank among quarterbacks? Oh my God. Uh,
13:47I'm not ready for this question. Uh, let me, let me think about this for a second. Tom Brady has
13:53300
13:53friends. Did he talk to you, Jermaine? No, he just talked to me. I'm not in the inner circle. I'm
14:03just,
14:03I'm on the outside looking in. You're on the outer ring. I know you're an outer ring guy.
14:07Yeah. Uh, Kenny, uh, you know what? I wouldn't put anything past him, especially with the way that
14:13his hair looks these days. I mean, who would have ever thought that he would have that full head of
14:18hair the way he does that he looks better now than he did 20 years ago. Um, what, you know,
14:23like what team would he go to that would be Superbowl ready? Like he picked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and
14:31Bruce Arians and that team was loaded. They just needed a quarterback. So what team would fall into
14:36that category? If in fact, he was going to come back at the age of 50 and Vikings, you know,
14:43the Vikings, the only team, I mean, with Justin Jefferson, that offense, you know, maybe their
14:47defense is okay. They got a good, I mean, a couple of years ago, they were what? 14 and three
14:53with
14:53Sam Donald. That'd be the only team I could think about that could, that would need a quarterback.
14:58You could plug them in and they have enough pieces, uh, that they could can, you know,
15:03not that they're going to win, but they could be a playoff contender.
15:06All right. So the GM for the jets, Darren Muge, regardless of the jets performance yesterday,
15:12which was historically bad. Uh, they got some really good young players here. Could you imagine
15:17Tom Brady in a jet uniform?
15:18Oh my God, that would be unbelievable.
15:23It will, it would be, it will be interesting to see what happens. Boomer. Thank you. We appreciate
15:28you taking the time as always.
15:30All right, guys. Talk to you next week, man. Enjoy the day.
