"This was just a 'bonehead' mistake" Should we be CONCERNED about Drake Maye's decision-making?" #NFL legend Boomer Esiason joins!
Esiason: (Maye) he took all of the responsibility"
Transcript
00:00hey boomer hey good morning guys man i uh hope you guys are over that loss i mean you know
00:04you
00:04gotta be you know on to pittsburgh now right yeah we are we're on to pittsburgh drake may took a
00:10lot
00:10of heat around here last four or five days uh should we be concerned about his decision making
00:17well rightfully so and uh you know this is a part and parcel playing quarterback in the nfl and
00:23since he was the first quarterback with three fourth quarter uh interceptions i think since
00:29tom brady did it back in 2001 against denver in the fourth quarter is amazing to me i mean he
00:35just basically lost his mind i think i think josh mcdaniels probably told him on the on one of the
00:42interceptions you know force the ball the romeo dobbs down the sideline and you know seattle
00:46read it perfect and made a great interception but it's the last interception that really hurts because
00:52you know you're right there to tie the game potentially and you just throw it off your
00:56back foot and you just let it go and i know i could see his body language as soon as
01:01he let it
01:01go was like oh you know mikey was said one of those moments and you know we've all been there
01:06and i will
01:07say for that young man he stood up after the game he took all of uh the responsibility and then
01:13i look
01:13at the game and i say to myself well damn the defense played great i think they forced six punts
01:18in a
01:18row and it wasn't until drake may started giving the ball away that you know all of a sudden seattle
01:24started scoring so i don't want to overreact to anything in week one with any player any team
01:30any coach uh all i can say is they can get back on track this week at home against pittsburgh
01:35boomer i know you've probably like you said oh look who it is you showed up
01:41i did i told them if they don't send me a text 15 minutes before i can't remember yesterday so
01:47but you you've been in situations before especially the last i want to kind of dig into that last
01:53interception you know as a quarterback you know the situation you're in field goal range it's the
01:59worst thing you could do what do you think runs through his mind that makes him have an absolute
02:04brain fart in that situation where he just does the worst thing that you can do in that moment i
02:11i gotta
02:11tell you uh jermaine i i've had moments like that myself as a player that i could i think i
02:16can remember
02:16some of them but um you know you just you have to be totally disciplined and that was a great
02:21thing
02:22about tom brady when he played he was really really disciplined and i don't know how he was able to
02:27do
02:27it for four quarters for all those years i mean a couple bad games here and there but some of
02:32the
02:32interceptions that tom would throw would always be tipped or something like that this is just a bonehead
02:37mistake and you know i i don't know if it was because he wasn't used to playing four quarters i
02:43don't know if he
02:44was mentally exhausted uh playing in seattle is not easy you know these are not excuses what they
02:50are is the realities of how difficult the game is and how difficult the position is so he lost his
02:56concentration i mean and you always have to fight that during a game there are going to be lulls
03:00during games you're going to have uh maybe a couple three and outs where you're not going to be feeling
03:05uh real confident about yourself but you got to overcome all of that stuff you got to fight through
03:10all of that stuff and that's why you know guys like tom brady were so great because they very few
03:16really bad games very few bad decisions in the middle of a game especially at the end of the game
03:22where he was and that's what makes it so troubling because like i said they had a chance for at
03:27least
03:27a tie at that point and to put into overtime but i'm not again i'm not going to overreact to
03:32a very
03:33tough opening game in a very tough situation against a very good football team now if you told me they
03:39went into say i don't know uh cleveland or arizona or miami and lost the game like that i would
03:45be
03:45really concerned but again remember seattle still one of the top five or six teams in the league even
03:51without sam darnold as they've proven and uh and i think i think drake may will bounce back he's not
03:57going to have an easy game this week against his pittsburgh defense but he'll bounce back and he'll learn to
04:02really control his emotions and stay focused for four quarters boomer i'm trying not to overreact but
04:08last season we talked to you a lot about the fact that he loses patience and that's when the
04:12mistakes come and after the loss on wednesday he once again said i lost patience at the end of that
04:17one how do you fix that because last year it was oh well he's young it's his first full season
04:23as
04:23as a starter but now you're into the second season that that should be a mental mistake that
04:28that you figured out it's a very good point uh courtney again this is where i go back to
04:34don't uh offer too much if you are the quarterback i mean i think he's too honest uh sometimes you
04:39gotta lie a little bit lie yeah just keep lying drake don't tell the truth too much um but again
04:46he's got to just fight through it he's got to really be disciplined it's uh it's about a
04:51concentration it's about uh it's about being in the game for all four quarters look he was second
04:56runner-up to an mvp last year so we all know how great of a player he truly is he
05:02had a really
05:03bad game matthew stafford had a really bad game in australia guys yesterday throughout the league
05:10some guys had great games some guys had bad games i still think these first two or three games of
05:15the
05:15regular season are for some of these teams to get their feet underneath them and really understand
05:21who they are now i will say the loss of aj brown is going to be is going to hurt
05:25and then you know
05:26the drop by romeo dobbs that you know that was brutal uh came at one of the worst times drake
05:31through a perfect pass and hit him right the hands nobody's around them and he drops it that's
05:35not why they signed him they signed him to make those plays and he's going to be asked to make
05:39those plays now with aj brown out about four to six weeks boomer yesterday on the fox broadcast tom
05:45brady went off on the teams that have decided to totally sit out preseason football and said that
05:52they were prioritizing health over being ready for week one where do you stand on those comments and
05:58do you think that played any role in the patriots performance in week one i think it does i mean
06:03i'm in favor of what tom was saying you know when he said it i want to say about a
06:07month ago in the
06:08middle of training camp you know i was very supportive of exactly what he said and he if you remember
06:13he
06:13posted on x a photo of him playing in the third quarter with randy moss and think about those two
06:19guys
06:19playing in the third quarter of a preseason game you know and i come from the generation where we had
06:23five preseason games and we played in four of them so at least a half and so things have changed
06:31significantly everybody's a little bit different you know jackson dart barely played in the preseason
06:37but last night it looked like he had played every single snap in preseason looked like he was ready
06:41to go right out of the gate so everybody's a little bit different i understand what tom was saying i
06:46do
06:46support what tom says i still think that you know and even mike tomlin said it last night
06:51on nbc was talking about how you know we backed off on practice we don't tackle nearly as much as
06:57we used to we don't hit in practice anymore these are all things that the nflpa has negotiated into
07:03their cba contract with the owners you know the owners love giving the uh c or the nflpa through the
07:09cba anything they want as long as it doesn't cost any money so right lack of practice is is one
07:15of
07:15those things boomer watching that patriots game did you feel like they were on on the offensive
07:22side of the football too conservative uh the way josh mcdaniels mike rabel were were playing that
07:28football game at least i think they were trying to establish their running game and trying to
07:32establish an identity and and you know the first interception down the left hand sideline to romeo
07:37dobbs that was a forced issue to me i felt like josh must have said something come on man he's
07:42got
07:43one-on-one let's let's take that let's take a shot down the field uh it's not all on josh
07:47i mean he's
07:48also looking at his quarterback and how he should be playing and and drake should have played better
07:53should have been more in command of the game i mean you know like courtney just said you know he's
07:57got a
07:57year under his belt he's got an mvp style year under his belt so i wouldn't i wouldn't expect a
08:03lot of
08:04these types of performances from him but you know in 17 games if we get two or three performances where
08:10he's playing poorly you know that's just going to be the nature of their schedule this year i told
08:15you guys i think i thought they were going to win 10 or 11 games and i know one thing
08:19josh allen is
08:20not going anywhere you know josh allen is going to be great he's going to be a pain in the
08:24ass um but
08:26their defense in buffalo is not that good i think they're undersized they made some plays at the end of
08:31the game yesterday and strip staff uh cj stroud to win the game but i still think that the patriots
08:36are
08:36going to be a playoff team um and i still think that they're going to have a chance of winning
08:40the
08:41uh the afc east simply because i just don't think that buffalo's defense is as good as new england's
08:46defense boomer you talk about buffalo and josh allen and just you start to look around the league
08:52yesterday and with the patriots first four games three of them on the road but all four opponents
08:57being playoffs teams how important is it with now without aj brown through those first four weeks
09:04is important for drake may to show that he can go out there and perform at the level that you're
09:10going to need as a team to be able to put that team on his football on his back and
09:15carry them to
09:16victories well i always think back to the belichick teams guy got hurt next man up see you later when
09:22you get back you're back and we can't worry about you right now and that's you know that's the way
09:26you
09:26got to look at it with aj brown i know that sounds uh you know you know rather harsh but
09:31that's the way
09:32it is in the nfl and for bill belichick and i'm sure mike vrabel when he was on those teams
09:36jermaine
09:37when you were on those teams it was always next man up next man up next man up and we
09:41were not
09:41going to allow whoever was injured uh and not playing to affect us uh it even happened when tom
09:48went down against kansas city and matt castle came in and then won 11 and 5 for god's sake so
09:53you know
09:53you lose players here and there it happens uh you lose all pro players all throughout the season
09:59there's been a bunch of guys already injured in the first week of the season teams are going to
10:03have to overcome those things and i'm sure that mindset is something that mike vrabel has brought
10:08you know to the team and it's something that i think you probably could ask him today you could
10:12say hey all right next man up mentality who is that next man who is the guy that's going to
10:16be making
10:16the plays and i'm sure that romeo dobbs doesn't feel really great about you know his opening game as a
10:22patriot either so you know he's another guy that's going to be under a lot of pressure so this is
10:27this is
10:28interesting i you know i figured if they were two and two after four that would be a really good
10:31thing it's how you look when you're two and two i think that fans do react to so if you
10:36throw three
10:37interceptions in the fourth quarter it's going to be a long long week until the next game so i think
10:41that's where drake may is right now boomer you brought up the steelers uh defense but their their
10:47offense yesterday aaron rogers looks like he's still got juice uh in that final season um what will
10:52make him so difficult to defend on sunday you know he likes to play a little bit of street ball
10:58you
10:58know and this is the thing that you know people don't understand even when mike mccarthy was his
11:02coach used to drive mike crazy anytime he anytime he sees one of those wide receivers you know one
11:08on one and he thinks he can do a back shoulder throw no matter what the play call was in
11:12the huddle
11:13you know he'll go against that and he'll do that he'll try to throw the ball down the field and
11:17i saw a
11:17lot of that yesterday again um you know and plus you know they weren't playing a great team yesterday
11:23atlanta atlanta's got good players but they have huge quarterback problems and you know when you're
11:28starting cooper rush who's a nice backup and who's a nice insurance policy um like kind of like drew
11:33lock in seattle you're you know you're not gonna you're not gonna win a lot of games i i'm sorry
11:38just
11:38not especially on the road so i think aaron looks good but if you're playing man to man if i
11:44like this
11:44would be my scouting report against the steelers if you are playing man to man on the outside and
11:49you're going against one of their big wide receivers whether you know dk medcalf or whoever
11:54i i you got to think that he's going to be calling a play for a back shoulder throw down
11:58the sideline
11:59that's his play and it drives coaches crazy and i'm sure that's one of the things that led him to
12:04say those unkind things about uh you know matt laflora's previous coach in in uh in green bay which
12:10was really unfortunate but i you know i think the steelers are who they are they're they're a good
12:15team they're not a great team he's 40 what one two years old i just think he's got some juice
12:21but
12:22man a 17 game season is a long time for a guy that age the question of the week for
12:26boomer is brought
12:27to you by mcfarland energy what did you make of that overturned defensive touchdown in the saints
12:35lions game yesterday boomer uh you know i always feel bad for mike pereira because he's got to come
12:41on and he's got to explain these rules to all of us i mean because we don't all look at
12:46the uh you
12:48know the rule book inside and out and we all have seen plays like this for the last 50 years
12:53and we
12:54all think that that's a a fumble a backward pass and now he has to come out and explain within
13:00the
13:00rule book the letter of the law so he did that but while doing that obviously social media goes
13:08insane because we can't believe our eyes you know we or we can't believe our ears because we do believe
13:14our eyes um yeah i think it was really unfortunate for the saints i think the saints are one of
13:19the
13:19better teams this year that i think this is the team that's gonna gonna win the nfc south assuming
13:24they can stay healthy as well and i i do like tyler shuck i thought i thought he played well
13:29and i love
13:29the fact that they went for two that's exactly what you should do in my in my eyes especially
13:34when you're scoring that many points but what a disaster for the nfl first week here we got our
13:39first bizarre call and mike pereira has got to explain to all of us and then we got to throw
13:43up
13:43after we hear it he needs a raise uh boober kid we a point of uh conversation after the game
13:49when
13:50drake made through that fourth quarter interception the final one that lost the game was do coaches
13:56remind players not to throw interceptions as someone who has played in the biggest moments
14:00is there any way in in god's green earth that josh mcdaniels had to tell drake may don't throw an
14:07interception here before that final pass well i think josh would probably trust drake and he probably
14:14i don't necessarily know that he would remind him i know again i i go back to my day prior
14:20to the
14:21coach the quarterback communication devices if there were a timeout or something the head coach
14:26sam weish in this case would probably say to me hey look man we're in field goal range don't take
14:30any chances but you know this is the play we're going to run if we got the guy that we
14:34want to
14:35get you got to give him a chance to go make a play so i don't know if josh whispered
14:39in the ear
14:40of drake may or not hey look we're in field goal range let's be careful let's not do anything
14:45stupid with the football if he did that and drake may did throw that interception that's really
14:51concerning it makes me feel like he didn't do that because you know drake made a bonehead play
14:57in a bonehead decision i i almost feel like he was trying to throw the ball out of bounds and
15:01last
15:02night dak prescott tried to do the same thing and it turned into an interception and it cost the
15:07cowboys the game just like this cost the patriots the game so sometimes us quarterbacks
15:11can be blockaded and a little bit stubborn but i would hope that you know josh would say in his
15:18ear hey listen drake you know we're in field goal range we can tie it but this is the play
15:23just be
15:24careful you would think that the coach would do that and when you played the communication device
15:29was the telegraph machine am i right about that oh yeah okay i appreciate that well you know what
15:34actually when it first came in when it first came in my head coach was richie kotite okay and
15:41i was playing with the jets and we were playing a game against the miami dolphins it was the first
15:46game of the season we lost like 52 to 14 and literally a minute into the game he forgot that
15:53you had to hold the button down to be able to talk to the quarterback so i got like every
15:58fourth word
15:59like it right but i'm like what the f are we doing here so we ended up losing 52 to
16:0514 the next game we
16:06come back we're playing against jacksonville it's their first year in the league they're an expansion team
16:10they have mark brunell tom coughlin they're not very good so the first series we go down the
16:16series we have like a i think like a 10 play drive we end up scoring a touchdown but the
16:20same thing
16:21happened at the beginning of that series where he's not holding the button down and i'm getting
16:26like every third fourth word like i eat right the left uh the power like what are you talking about
16:33so i i unplugged it i waved everybody off and i called the plays and we went down the field
16:40and
16:40we scored a touchdown yeah so i come back to the sideline and richie kotite is standing there and
16:45he's kind of yelling at me like what are you doing you're not listening to me you're not running the
16:50plays that i'm gone now i have a smile on my face i'm like richie you know the cameras are
16:54on us right
16:54now and we just scored a touchdown you should be really happy we're up seven nothing and if you don't
17:03that's what i'm going to do after the game i'm going to hold a press conference about how
17:07to actually use the quarterback to communication device correctly and i said i'll see you i'll see
17:14you in the next series yeah that's how the quarterback does it i love it boomer thank you
17:18we appreciate it and we'll talk to you again next week always the best guys talk to you next week
17:22hang
17:23in there
