00:00Morning, Boomer.
00:01Hey, good morning, man.
00:02Another Winter Monday.
00:03And I'm telling you, this is two weeks in a row now
00:06where I don't know what to say about Drake May.
00:10I mean, this team's got so many injuries.
00:13He's throwing the guys I've never even heard of.
00:16And all of a sudden, 26 of 34, 374 yards,
00:21accounts for five different touchdowns.
00:23I mean, these last two performances
00:26are the kid that we saw last year.
00:27So I don't know what happened two weeks ago.
00:30I don't know if they sat down with him
00:31and started talking to him, but somehow he has found his mojo.
00:35Well, if you had your way,
00:36he'd be sitting on the bench right now, Boomer.
00:39I would have done that after the third poor game
00:41where he was making really bad decisions
00:43and throwing interceptions
00:44and giving the ball to the other team
00:46when he should not have been doing that.
00:49But I guess that win in Buffalo
00:51basically turned his season around
00:53because yesterday's performance was amazing, actually.
00:57It was almost perfect.
00:58And, you know, quite frankly,
00:59you look at all the injuries that they have right now, Greg,
01:02I don't know how he did it.
01:04I mean, I don't want to hear now as we move along,
01:07oh, they're injured, they're hurt, they're this or that.
01:09I mean, he's overcome all of that.
01:11Now, I know the Raiders were terrible yesterday,
01:12but still, I mean, that was about as good a performance
01:16as you're going to have as a quarterback in the NFL.
01:18Is it possible that we were too hard on him
01:21and on this football team
01:23when you now look back at those first three weeks
01:25and say, you know, they played the Seahawks,
01:28they were in that with the Seahawks,
01:30they don't do well in September,
01:31they tend not to do well early in the season in Florida,
01:35and maybe we were just too hard on the young guy.
01:40No, I think that, you know,
01:42you're an established professional quarterback
01:44who was runner-up as an MVP last year,
01:48and the thing about the turnovers
01:50that we were talking about those first three weeks
01:52were just where they happened, how they happened,
01:55and the way that it just like it was carefree giveaway time.
02:00And, you know, a lot of these games in the NFL
02:03throughout the season are going to be determined
02:05by who gets the turnovers and who gives up the turnovers.
02:08And those turnovers were just killers,
02:11especially where they happened in the games
02:13in which they were playing and losing.
02:15But, you know, they've won, you know,
02:16three out of their last four.
02:18We kind of forget, you know, that they did beat Pittsburgh,
02:21and that was a pretty good play, you know,
02:22pretty good game, especially from the defense,
02:24and Aaron Rodgers struggled that game.
02:26But these last two games have been, you know,
02:29a complete and utter turnaround for the offense.
02:32Now, defense is going to be good all year long, I think,
02:35but this performance and the one before that,
02:39against Buffalo.
02:40I mean, look, now I expect it every week, don't you?
02:43Yeah, yeah.
02:45Boomer, I think you probably do the best answers.
02:47I don't know if I've even asked you this before.
02:49You were an MVP in the NFL in your career.
02:53That following year,
02:55do you think you maybe put too much pressure on yourself?
02:59Do you think that's something Drake May could be dealing with,
03:01even though he didn't win the MVP being the runoff?
03:03Do you think maybe early he might have put
03:05too much pressure on himself,
03:06and now he's kind of just saying,
03:08let me go out there, relax, and play football?
03:11You're asking me to remember something from 38 years ago?
03:14I mean, I can't remember yesterday,
03:16let alone 38 years ago.
03:18But how did you feel?
03:20I'm trying to think.
03:22I mean, I think we had an 8-8 season.
03:24I think I had an okay offensive season.
03:26I don't remember feeling like I put myself under pressure.
03:30I do remember that, you know, we were the marked team.
03:33The year before, we were coming off of a 4-11 season.
03:37That was the strike-shortened season of 1987.
03:40And I thought we had a great team in 87,
03:42but we fell apart doing large part to the off-field stuff
03:47with the strike.
03:49But now, 88 was really unencumbered.
03:52I felt like we had nothing to lose.
03:54It was great.
03:55And then 89, I thought we had a really good team, too.
03:57I think we went 8-8, but we were marked.
04:00We were a marked team.
04:00Everybody gave us their best shot, I felt like.
04:03It's hard to explain how he has turned his season around
04:08and has done it in such dramatic fashion.
04:12I don't know how to explain it other than somehow
04:15he got his confidence back.
04:16And again, you know, so we also were talking about,
04:20well, I wasn't really.
04:21Most people were talking about that maybe Josh McDaniels,
04:24the game has passed him by.
04:25Do we remember those conversations the first three weeks of the season?
04:28And I was saying, no, that hasn't.
04:30I mean, he knows what he's doing,
04:31and he's the guy that's got to get Drake May right.
04:35And I think something happened before the Buffalo game,
04:38you know, and after the Jacksonville game.
04:40The Jacksonville game was the low point.
04:42That was a 35-6 loss, interceptions all over the place,
04:46the stake-prone football, defense got tore up,
04:48and now all of a sudden they go to Buffalo.
04:50They beat a Buffalo defense that's not very good,
04:53and neither is the Raider defense.
04:55But still, the numbers are staggering over the last two weeks.
05:00Now he's going to have to do it against the Jets,
05:02which I don't think he really should have a problem.
05:05I mean, you know, Jets are not a great defense,
05:07but, you know, I could see another really good game
05:10coming here for him.
05:12Well, then, Boomer, you need to take into consideration
05:14getting back A.J. Brown.
05:15How much does that add to this offense moving forward?
05:18It should be explosive.
05:20I mean, that's why they have him.
05:21That's why Mike Vrabel went and got him.
05:23He had him down in Tennessee.
05:25He saw what a difference he makes.
05:27There's not a guy in the Jets secondary that can cover A.J. Brown.
05:30I can tell you that right now.
05:32So it's going to be interesting to watch exactly what, you know,
05:37the defense of the Jets tries to do here.
05:39If he comes back and he's 100%, you know,
05:42I would expect him to have a huge day,
05:44and I'm sure he's sitting on the sideline,
05:46and he's frustrated, and I'm sure he's now looking forward
05:48to getting back on the field,
05:50especially with the way that the offense has been playing.
05:52Boomer, how do teams not know basic football at the end of games?
05:58I'm sure you were watching that Giants-Commanders game,
06:01and I am just so dumbfounded.
06:04First of all, obviously, the coach needs to tell the quarterback
06:07about the situation, but eight seconds left.
06:10You played football your whole life,
06:12and then when Jaden Daniels is on the ground,
06:14he's, like, lying like he's on the beach.
06:16Like, oh, okay, I'll roll over.
06:18I don't know.
06:18Like, how does that happen in the NFL?
06:21Well, Jermaine knows this.
06:23The quarterback gets in there and says,
06:24hey, guys, we, you know, we have to get up here.
06:26We have to run a ball.
06:27We have to run the play quickly.
06:29I mean, he was told, Jaden Daniels was told,
06:31this is all on the quarterback.
06:32This is none on the coach.
06:34I hate when people say, you know,
06:35Dan Quinn needs to be fired for this.
06:37No, no, no.
06:37The coach basically is protecting his quarterback.
06:41You saw his reaction on the sideline.
06:43He slammed his headset down.
06:45They all were completely aware of what the situation was.
06:49As a matter of fact, one of Jaden Daniels' offensive linemen
06:53did say that they spoke about it in the huddle.
06:55I call this 100% brain lock on the quarterback.
06:59I have no idea.
07:01I can't explain it.
07:01It was a, uh, just a major, uh, screw up by him and nobody else.
07:07He took, now I will say he took responsibility for it after the game,
07:12but Dan Quinn, you know, he's got to stand up there
07:15and he's got to protect his quarterback.
07:16He's never going to say, yeah, you know,
07:17he knew what he was supposed to do and didn't do it.
07:20And this is the frustrating thing about coaching
07:22is that you coach players, you give them all the information.
07:26And then every now and again, somebody is going to have a brain fart.
07:29And this is exactly what this was.
07:31This is not on the coach at all.
07:33This is 100% on the quarterback.
07:35He's supposed to be in control.
07:37And he said, you know, if I'm going to be a franchise quarterback
07:40after the game, and I'm paraphrasing here, that can't happen.
07:43So I don't want to hear about the coach making the mistake.
07:46This is purely on the quarterback and it's his responsibility
07:50to know how much time's left and what they need to win the game.
07:54So it's on him 100%.
07:56Yeah.
07:56If you want to put it on the coach, put on Nick Sirianni
07:58for kicking the ball to the returner with eight seconds left.
08:01When you look at the relationship between Josh McDaniels and Drake May,
08:07how important is it to have that relationship where you and your OC
08:12are on the same page?
08:13It looks like with the charges, you can see the issues maybe between Herbert
08:18and McDaniel not being on the same page.
08:20But talk about what it means to be on the same page as your OC week in
08:24and week out.
08:25Yeah.
08:25So for the first three weeks of the season, we were trying to discuss
08:28what Drake May was doing.
08:30And I was saying then, and I'll say now, it's the most important
08:32relationship, you know, on the field for the quarterback.
08:37That guy knows what he does well.
08:39He knows, you know, where he's at in his game.
08:43He'll try to call plays where he's not going to put the quarterback in
08:46trouble.
08:46And they'll have discussions during the week about, you know, tough,
08:51tough discussions, especially after that Jacksonville game.
08:54It was probably like, you know, listen, you can't throw these balls.
08:57You can't throw these interceptions.
08:58You got to get rid of the ball.
09:00It's got to be quick.
09:01And you got to be able to trust each other.
09:03And obviously they do.
09:04We know that.
09:05I know that.
09:06So it's, it's never about, it hasn't been about Josh McDaniels.
09:10It's been more about the player making bad decisions.
09:12Now there, there could have been a situation in Seattle where I think he
09:17forced the ball to Romeo Dobbs and it was just a tipped interception.
09:21That was, you know, that was picked off by Seattle.
09:24And, and that's something that may have come from the sideline, you know,
09:27give the ball to Romeo Dobbs, give him a chance.
09:29I could see that kind of conversation happening, but the stuff that goes on
09:34during the week, he's the coach is a psychotherapist.
09:38The coach is somebody that has to work through all the issues and problems that
09:41the quarterback has.
09:42And it's obvious they trust each other.
09:44That's why I was saying three weeks ago, it's not Josh McDaniels fault.
09:48It's the player's fault and the player's decision-making, which has
09:50obviously gotten better the last two weeks.
09:53Question of the week for Boomer is brought to you by McFarlane Energy.
09:57Wiggy, cover your ears.
09:59If, if Georgia ends up ranked number one this week, should there be,
10:03should there be an editor's note because of the no call on the pass
10:06interference?
10:07Oh boy, man.
10:08You know, I mean, how many screw-ups have we seen this year?
10:12I mean, in both professional and college football and Georgia is probably
10:16going to end up number one.
10:17And by the way, I would think either Georgia, Texas, or Ohio state, one of
10:22those, or two of those teams are going to end up playing again for the
10:26national championship.
10:27So it's going to be one of those three teams.
10:30I feel bad for Arch Manning, but you know, we've got the Manning on the back
10:33of your, on the back of your Jersey, all everybody's, you know, gunning for
10:37you, but Georgia seems to be a really well-rounded football team.
10:41I mean, their defense is always going to be tough, but I listen, it is what it
10:46is.
10:46And there's a long way to go and a lot of football to be played.
10:48So I do think it's going to be either Ohio state, Texas, or Georgia, two of
10:53those three teams in the national championship.
10:55If I had to guess right now, Boomer, do two teams hate each other this season as
10:59much as the Niners and Seahawks?
11:01Uh, man, how awesome was that game?
11:03That game was tremendous.
11:05And, you know, I just thought it was, it had everything.
11:09It had great defense.
11:10It had great offensive players.
11:12It had special teams.
11:14I mean, it was just an amazing football game.
11:17So, uh, I, I think Seattle's still a really good team, much like I thought the
11:21doing on Patriots are a really good team.
11:23I still think the Patriots are going to win somewhere between 10 and 11 games.
11:26Um, if they can beat the jets this week, there's a very good chance that they may
11:30find themselves in first place in the AFC East after this, uh, Monday night game
11:35between Buffalo and the Rams.
11:37Interesting tonight.
11:38This game tonight is really, I think is going to be an indictment of the Buffalo
11:43defense as to whether or not it is good enough to stop one of the best
11:47quarterbacks in the league.
11:48So keep your eyes open for that.
11:50And I would think that, you know, things are going to look much brighter.
11:53We're here in the next few weeks for the new England Patriots.
11:56Just to go back to Josh McDaniels, uh, how much of a revenge game plan was that for
12:01him going up against the team that fired him and really buried him when he left
12:05Oakland and now Vegas?
12:07You know, I think all these coaches understand that certain things don't work out and
12:12they're all going to get fired at some point.
12:14And then they just try to keep their head down.
12:16And I'm sure that, you know, he's, I'm sure it's very satisfying for him.
12:22Let's put it that way.
12:22And waking up this morning, putting up all those kinds of numbers, but you know, what
12:26he has here that he didn't have in Oakland or at the time, you know, or the Raiders,
12:30it is, it is, he's got a legitimate quarterback and he's got somebody that he can work with
12:35and has worked with the last two years.
12:37And the kid is nine times out of 10 is going to give you a, a winning performance.
12:42So I think he's got the player.
12:45That's, that's the important thing in order to be a successful coach.
12:49Boomer, I think you, before you go, I think you worked with Mike Dick, uh, on a Superbowl
12:55at, at the very least.
12:57Um, and sadly passed away on Friday, got, got your thoughts on him and like what, what
13:03he meant to the game of football.
13:04Yeah, I knew he wasn't doing well.
13:06Um, and, uh, you know, lasted to the age of 86.
13:10Uh, he's an iconic, I mean, iconic from playing, coaching, personality, uh, media, you name
13:17it.
13:18He was such a great guy to be around.
13:20I mean, he was a man's man for sure.
13:22Uh, he was gruff.
13:24Uh, he was opinionated and, uh, I know we're all going to miss him, but man, he left such
13:30a legacy behind and so grateful to be able to know him personally and to be around him.
13:35And, uh, certainly he is going to be missed.
13:38All right.
13:39And I, I heard great things about the hall of fame induction ceremony in your speech.
13:44I don't know about that.
13:46I mean, I, I gotta, I gotta tell you, it was like the last thing that I ever expected to
13:50believe, you know, when, when they told me, uh, you know, what, two months ago that I was
13:54going in, I was like going in where I had no idea.
13:58What's the, what's the radio hall of fame?
14:01Did you get any kind of a bust or a golden microphone or like, what do they, what do you
14:05get for that?
14:06So what I understand they're doing is they're actually building a new hall or built a new
14:10hall of fame.
14:11And, you know, you know, the people in our business really love our business.
14:14We can make fun of it for sure.
14:15But there is an undercurrent of people that have such pride in what we do on a daily basis.
14:21Um, give you a beautiful plaque with your, with your photo.
14:24And they're going to be hanging down on the walls and this, uh, this new hall of fame
14:28in Chicago.
14:29So it's, they're excited.
14:32They're excited about it.
14:33I was excited to be there and very happy to be there, but you know, it's, uh, it's something
14:37that they're really trying to prop up and trying to keep radio alive, which is good for all
14:42of us involved.
14:42It is.
14:43Yes, it is.
14:43All right.
14:44Well, we're proud of you and we'll talk to you again next week, Boomer.
14:47All right, guys.
14:47Thanks so much.
14:48Have a good week.
