00:00Tommy DeVito is joining us now on a Patriots Monday, which is on a Tuesday this time, and that is
00:04brought to you by Northeast Men's Health, the experts in treating men's sexual health with seven New England locations.
00:11Learn more at northeastmenshealth.com.
00:14Tommy DeVito, first of all, thanks for coming out with us. We really appreciate it, Tommy.
00:17For sure. I'm looking forward to it.
00:19Thanks, man. I love your story.
00:21So, Sean Stellato, your agent, I've had him in studio before.
00:24He's a great guy and an awesome interview.
00:27By the way, did you know that he's Italian by any chance?
00:31I saw somebody post that somewhere.
00:33I have to do more.
00:35Yeah, he's a good dude, and he's a local guy from here, so we've had him in studio.
00:41And we talked a lot about your story, and I love the fact that when you became this big star
00:47with the Giants,
00:49when you became the starting quarterback, at that time, you, for very good reasons, were living in your childhood bedroom,
00:55and your parents were there, like, what was that like being this massive star in, you know, in the biggest
01:02city in America,
01:03and you were living at home?
01:05Like, were you able to bring girls home to, like, your mom's house?
01:08Or, like, what was that like?
01:11I think about being in high school again, but on steroids.
01:16I was going to school.
01:18I was playing football, you know, coming back and hanging out and doing all the normal things I would with
01:23all my friends that I grew up with
01:24and my family being there in the same circle of people in the same area that I did all the
01:29stuff in high school with,
01:30just at a different level.
01:31So it was a lot of fun, but I'm not going to be any better.
01:33That's got to be, I'm sorry, that's got to be a dream come true because, like, you are doing,
01:38any time you become a star in the same city and in front of the people you went to high
01:43school with,
01:44like, that makes it ten times, like, like girls that didn't date you or, like, guys that maybe you didn't
01:49get along with.
01:50Right now, you're the biggest thing in the world.
01:52That's got to feel extra cool, right?
01:54Oh, for sure.
01:55It was a surreal experience, for sure.
01:58It was a storybook.
01:59Now, that was the Tommy Cutlets era.
02:01I see Mike Vrabel has started the 2 Chainz campaign.
02:04Has that stuck, and how do you feel about it?
02:06That has stuck in the building, for sure.
02:09He was on the Cutlets wave for probably two weeks when I first got here,
02:12and then he saw me wearing the same two necklaces I did every day,
02:16so then he started going with 2 Chainz, and that's what it is.
02:18And you're okay with it?
02:20Yeah, it's great.
02:22Wait, tell me about the 2 Chainz.
02:23Like, do you wear, like, 2 Chainz around your neck?
02:25Is that where it comes from?
02:26I actually don't know the story behind why he calls you 2 Chainz.
02:29Yeah, I have two necklaces that I wear always consistently.
02:33You know, I don't take them off, so that's kind of just a thing.
02:36I always have them out, and that's kind of what he picked up on,
02:39and it's a good thing.
02:40Yeah, Vrabel's the best.
02:42We were talking earlier with Marcus Jones, and, like, he's a –
02:45like, Vrabel has a gift of being a good coach
02:50but a ball buster at the same time.
02:52Like, in a funny way, he can kind of bust on you and motivate you.
02:55And have you seen that in person, like,
02:58his gift of being able to be just a great ball buster?
03:01Oh, 100%.
03:02I think I noticed it when I first got here because in team meetings
03:06when he's breaking balls, like, half the time he's like,
03:09you know, you guys can laugh, right?
03:11Like, you know, sometimes you don't know when he's being, like,
03:14serious and when he's not.
03:15And I think that's the funny part of it because, you know,
03:17that's just how he is.
03:18That's his personality.
03:19You know, there's definitely time to lock in,
03:21but a lot of the time he is, he's breaking balls.
03:23That's just what it is.
03:24It's fun.
03:25But he got into the team a little bit during that game Saturday.
03:27But just on your game and your performance,
03:29a couple things to pick from.
03:31One, you had a couple of tremendous runs.
03:33Did you just see man coverage and decide to go?
03:36Or how does that – how do you decide when in your brain
03:38it's time to take off?
03:40It's just a feeling.
03:41Definitely not something that I plan or try to do.
03:44You know, I'd like to say that I'm able to run.
03:47You know, I think I got a little bit of juice behind me
03:49when I get running, but, you know,
03:51just sometimes when certain movements happen in the pocket
03:54and you kind of just feel that space,
03:56just like your instincts kick in and you go.
03:58That's just what it was.
03:59Did you ever – have you ever raced Drake?
04:00Who's the faster of the two?
04:02I have not raced Drake yet.
04:04Nope.
04:05I have not.
04:06Have you learned anything from Drake?
04:09Because, you know, especially with this system here,
04:12you know, was there ever a time where, like,
04:14you saw him do something and maybe he took you aside?
04:17Like, what have you learned from being around Drake May
04:20about how he plays?
04:22Yeah, there's definitely a lot of conversations.
04:23I think with him last year, you know,
04:25learning offense for himself and then me being here last year
04:29and learning it in a classroom but not getting any reps in it
04:32and then this year, you know, getting reps in OTAs and training camp,
04:35you know, physically doing some of these things
04:38and some things that, you know, I haven't seen
04:40because I haven't really faced our defense in this offense before
04:43until OTAs and training camps, so kind of giving me tidbits
04:46as to what to look for.
04:48Oh, they're going to do this, they're going to do that
04:49because he's seen it for a while.
04:50So, little tidbits like that have been great for myself
04:53and my growth through OTAs and training camp
04:55and thankful for it.
04:56What do you – how does the McDaniels offense compare
04:58to others you've run?
04:59Is it – it appears from the outside, like,
05:01it's so important to get the ball out quick
05:03and there are obviously some things we've watched through the years,
05:05but what is it to you now that you've started
05:07to run it a little bit?
05:09Yeah, very similar to the offense that I came from
05:11with Brian Dayball.
05:12A lot of the terminology is the same.
05:14A lot of concepts, protections, like that –
05:17all that stuff is very similar to me,
05:18so it was kind of, like, refreshing to have that
05:20when I got here.
05:21Now, it is that, but just on another level
05:24and as far as the ask of the quarterback,
05:26there's definitely a lot more on our plate
05:28than I had been asked of before,
05:30so that was kind of a learning curve for me
05:32and kind of the growth between me and Josh,
05:34you know, learning what he's looking for
05:36and what his intents are with the play
05:37and kind of growing from there.
05:39Were you a Brady guy growing up?
05:42Like, was he your quarterback
05:44or was there another guy that you liked more than Brady?
05:47I mean, everybody loves Brady,
05:48but my guy was Aaron Rodgers.
05:50Oh, wow.
05:51Okay, so you liked the Aaron Rodgers style of play
05:54over Tom Brady, and why was that?
05:56Why was he your guy?
05:57I don't know if I would say style of play.
05:59I would say more just, like, the ability to throw the ball.
06:02I think Aaron Rodgers is the best thrower of the football
06:04ever around the planet.
06:06You know, he's just, he's one of a kind, one of one,
06:09and he'll never be duplicated.
06:11I think he's just a tremendous talent,
06:14and there's so many plays and clips that you can go up there,
06:16like, how did this dude even make this throw?
06:18It's just, it's only him.
06:20Speaking of, real quick, who got weirder,
06:22Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady?
06:25I have no answer for that.
06:27I don't know.
06:28I don't know if I'm on that kind of level.
06:30But they speak their own.
06:31Well, back on throwing the football, Tommy,
06:34the 69-yard touchdown pass to Kyle.
06:36It looked, it's like perfect,
06:38it looks to me like perfect mechanics.
06:39I don't know what I'm talking about.
06:40But do you hit that 10 out of 10 times
06:42because you had a clean pocket?
06:44Or even after that throw, were you like,
06:46oh, yeah, I nailed that.
06:47That doesn't happen all the time.
06:49No, it was great.
06:50I mean, it was honestly something that we had hit
06:52two days before in the joint practice against them.
06:54The same exact thing, just on the other,
06:56Kyle was on my left at that point.
06:58So it's something that just, you know,
07:00right play call, right defense.
07:01The way they kind of played, it was great.
07:03You know, I had a tremendous pocket.
07:04And, I mean, anybody here throwing that ball
07:05from back there.
07:06So it was a lot of fun just to go score with the guys.
07:08We're talking to Tommy DeVito.
07:10It was announced that Keyshawn Booty got traded.
07:12And I know he had a great camp.
07:14And I know that you guys have obviously
07:15had your time together.
07:17Like, what can you say about Keyshawn
07:18and his time here and now the trade?
07:22Yeah, he's awesome.
07:23I mean, like I said, when I got here in September,
07:26you know, his locker was too over for mine.
07:29So we spent a good amount of time together
07:30just, you know, getting to know each other,
07:32just kind of just hanging out,
07:34shooting the s***, regular stuff.
07:35And then, you know, his growth from then until now,
07:37you just see how he was as a player
07:39on and off the field.
07:41You know, he has tremendous support
07:42to everybody that was around him.
07:43You know, I hope the best for him.
07:44And I look forward to seeing him play
07:46because he's an exciting player to watch.
07:47How are you liking the area?
07:48What have you learned about New England
07:50since coming up here?
07:50And how have you adapted?
07:53Yeah, I mean, it's not too different
07:55from where I grew up,
07:56not too different from back home.
07:57You know, it's only three,
07:58three and a half hours away.
07:59So it's not a complete cultural shock,
08:02if you will.
08:02I do happen to hang out in Boston a good amount,
08:05especially in the North End.
08:06You know, I might be biased to say that,
08:07but I'm definitely up that way.
08:12But it's fun.
08:13It's good.
08:14Yeah, I mean, the Italian thing is like a big deal.
08:17Like, there was a video of your agent.
08:21Like, he made this video of him
08:23and Big Dom from the Philadelphia Eagles.
08:24I guess he's one of the security guys.
08:26And they were eating cannolis on the field.
08:29Do you ever just want to say to him,
08:30I get it, you're Italian.
08:32We understand this now.
08:34Maybe a different video that's not about being Italian.
08:38Listen, we're prideful, okay?
08:40And that's what people love
08:43and that's what people want.
08:44That's just what it is.
08:46Where do you eat?
08:47There's so many good places in the North End.
08:49Like, as a true Italian, like, where do you eat?
08:53I'm not going to stick my neck out
08:54and put it on one or two places.
08:56I'm not going to do that.
08:57I did not do that when I was in Jersey.
08:58I'm not going to do that here.
08:59But I do like a restaurant called Mari in the North End.
09:02Oh, Mari's great.
09:03That's a good one.
09:04That's a good one.
09:05Limoncello's another good one.
09:06That's a great one to check out as well.
09:09Coach Braves sent me over there last year, Limoncello.
09:11I know he said that was his spot.
09:13So, I had to go check that one out.
09:14Does it hold up to Jersey?
09:16I mean, does it compete?
09:17Listen, I can't compare anything to what I grew up with
09:20because that's biased.
09:21But for this area, that's some of the better stuff that I found.
09:26Yeah, yeah.
09:27They got that lasagna with, like, the pink sauce on it.
09:29Oh, so good.
09:31That would do it.
09:33So, have you, Tommy,
09:34have you had much face time with Robert Kraft since you've been here?
09:39Yeah.
09:40Yeah, a decent amount.
09:40He's always walking through the locker room
09:42or hanging out always around the guys, always smiling.
09:45So, it's always good to see him.
09:46Is he, like, the coolest old dude that you've ever met,
09:49like, with his, like, super cool sneaker collection
09:51and his friend being friends with all the rappers?
09:53By far.
09:54By far.
09:54He's second to none.
09:56He honestly is second to none.
09:58He's always got a smile on his face.
09:59And, you know, we talk about,
10:02because obviously I was in New York
10:03and he's got a lot of friends in New York.
10:04So, there's always a little joke we had going on.
10:06But, he just, you know, he's awesome.
10:09He's very personable.
10:10One of the most personable people, you know,
10:12of that that year that I've ever been around.
10:15So, grateful to be able to share some time with him.
10:18The best is when he calls you sweetheart.
10:20That's how you know he's a good fan.
10:21He loves calling people he likes sweetheart.
10:23That's when you know you're in, Tommy.
10:25All right.
10:26I haven't gotten to that point yet,
10:27but I'll make sure I try to get that out.
10:29All right.
10:30The quarterback question of the week
10:32is brought to you by Northeast Men's Health,
10:34the experts in treating men's sexual health
10:35with seven New England locations.
10:37Learn more at northeastmenshealth.com.
10:39And, this question has really nothing to do with football,
10:41but I just want to know,
10:42did you see the Odyssey by any chance?
10:45I did not.
10:46That's on my list.
10:47I had one off day where I decided to go to the movies
10:50and it was the Odyssey or Spider-Man
10:52and I ended up going to see Spider-Man.
10:53Ooh, how was Spider-Man?
10:55Spider-Man was very good.
10:56Very good.
10:56The Odyssey, I've heard so many things.
10:58It's more about just making sure that I find the IMAX,
11:02the 70, whatever the heck, you have to go see it.
11:04And then everybody's saying,
11:05I feel like I have to see it.
11:06So, I'll have to plan it out.
11:08So, the thing is, Tommy,
11:10I've got, I work with two people on the show.
11:12There are only two people that I know
11:13who saw the Odyssey and went, eh.
11:15Just a little overrated.
11:16A little overrated.
11:18Yeah.
11:18For some reason, they don't like it, Tommy.
11:21But how is their taste with everything else?
11:23Can you trust them?
11:23Excellent, yes.
11:24Well, he likes Rush,
11:25so I give him a little bit of credit.
11:27But, Tommy,
11:28has there ever been a movie that you saw
11:29that everyone else thought was great,
11:31and you were just like, eh, eh?
11:36Yeah, there's definitely been a ton.
11:37I don't know if I'd be able to tell you one off the bat
11:39just thinking about it.
11:40But, I don't know.
11:41I'm a tough critic,
11:43but I'm also like an old school kind of movie guy.
11:45I feel like movies nowadays are not,
11:47they just don't hit the same as they used to.
11:49Well, before I let you go, Tommy,
11:51speaking of movies,
11:51you're obviously very good with the camera.
11:53You had the commercials for major brands last year.
11:56Anything else coming up
11:57that we should look for here this football season?
12:00Oh, yeah.
12:01Got a YouTube show coming out soon
12:02with a dude named Nicky Cass.
12:04So, that'll be on the upcoming soon.
12:06Making pizzas, hanging out, shooting the s***.
12:08It'll be a good time.
12:10Hang on.
12:10You're doing something Italian in this?
12:13Yeah, I got talked into it.
12:15Somebody had,
12:16somebody sent me some AI things
12:17saying I was Italian,
12:18and I was like, you know,
12:19let's just run with that thought.
12:22That's right.
12:23Listen, give the people what works.
12:25Absolutely, Tommy.
12:27Well, listen,
12:28congrats on your success here in the preseason.
12:31It was awesome,
12:32and that bomb that you threw,
12:34that was fun to watch.
12:36And hopefully,
12:37here's to a great season with you.
12:39Hope everyone stays healthy,
12:40and hope everything works out.
12:41Tommy, thanks for coming on us.
12:43We really appreciate it.
12:43Thanks, Tom.
12:44Appreciate you guys.
12:45Thank you again.
12:46See you around the north end.
12:48Yes, sir.
12:49All right, man.
12:50Thanks so much.
12:51Appreciate it.
