00:011,000 horsepower sounds impressive, but it may not be the most important number on BYD's new
00:05electric truck. This is the BYD ETT 44, a battery electric tractor developed for European long-haul
00:11freight. BYD says it can travel around 600 kilometers on a full charge. More importantly,
00:15connect it to a 1.5 megawatt charger and the battery can go from 20 to 80 percent in roughly
00:1920 minutes. That adds around 400 kilometers or about 250 miles of driving range. And for a
00:24commercial truck, that changes the conversation. Because trucks do not make money sitting at a
00:27charger. They make money moving cargo. The basic challenge with an electric passenger car is range
00:32anxiety. For a heavy truck, the problem is more complicated. A bigger battery gives you more range,
00:36but a bigger battery also adds weight. That can reduce payload. And when that huge battery eventually
00:40needs to be charged, every extra minute of downtime matters to the fleet operator. So the engineering
00:45problem is not simply, how do you build an electric truck with a huge battery? It is, how do you
00:49keep
00:49that truck moving? That is what makes the ETT 44 interesting. The truck uses a 651 kilowatt hour BYD
00:55blade battery with LFP chemistry. BYD claims up to roughly 600 kilometers of range, and the truck
01:00is designed for a gross combination weight of up to 44 tons. Peak power reaches 750 kilowatts,
01:04around 1,000 horsepower. Those are serious numbers, but the charging system may matter more than the
01:09motors. The ETT 44 can accept up to 1.5 megawatts of charging power. BYD says that is enough to
01:15move
01:15the battery from 20 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes. In practical terms, the company says that
01:19stop can add roughly 400 kilometers of range. Think about what that means operationally.
01:23If a truck arrives at a charging station with 20 percent remaining, the driver does not necessarily
01:27need to sit there waiting for a nearly full battery. The truck can take a large amount of
01:31energy very quickly and get back onto the road. For passenger cars, saving 20 or 30 minutes at a
01:36charger is mostly convenience. For commercial freight, time is utilization. And utilization is money.
01:41This is why megawatt charging could matter even more for trucks than it does for cars.
01:44There is an obvious catch. A truck capable of accepting 1.5 megawatts only benefits from that
01:49number when a 1.5 megawatt charging system is actually available. The truck is only one-half
01:53of the engineering problem. The infrastructure is the other. That makes the comparison with the
01:57Tesla Semi especially interesting. Tesla's European Semi is currently listed with an
02:01estimated range of around 550 kilometers at a 40-ton gross combination weight. Tesla says the
02:05European truck can charge at up to 800 kilowatts and recover roughly 60 percent of its range in 30
02:08minutes. European deliveries are expected to begin in 2027. On paper, BYD is taking the more
02:13aggressive approach to charging. Its quoted maximum is 1.5 megawatts versus 800 kilowatts for the
02:17European Semi. And BYD quotes approximately 600 kilometers of range against Tesla's roughly 550
02:22kilometers. But those numbers should not be treated as a perfect head-to-head test. The
02:25companies do not publish their range figures under identical conditions. The more useful
02:29comparison is strategic. Tesla is building the Semi around its own vehicle, software, and
02:33megacharger network. BYD is approaching the problem from its vertically integrated battery
02:36and energy ecosystem. Two electric trucks. Two different ways of trying to solve the same
02:40commercial problem. Keep the vehicle moving. The ETT-44 has also received a 5-star Euro NCAP
02:45truck safety rating and a CitySafe award. That deserves attention because this is BYD's first major
02:49entry into Europe's long-haul electric truck market. Its strongest safety result is visibility.
02:53Euro NCAP praised the truck's low cab mounting position, lower door window, and camera-based
02:57mirrors, which give the driver unusually good direct vision for a long-haul truck. But 5 stars
03:01does not mean perfect. Euro NCAP also found that some of the ETT-44's collision avoidance
03:05systems still trail the strongest trucks it has tested, particularly in some frontal and
03:08lane departure scenarios. That distinction matters. This is a competitive first attempt, not evidence
03:12that BYD has solved every part of the truck. And this is where the ETT-44 becomes more
03:16interesting than another specification comparison. BYD is not entering Europe with only a truck.
03:21The company is talking about charging infrastructure, energy storage, energy management, financing,
03:25and fleet services alongside the vehicle. That makes sense. A fleet operator does not really
03:29buy a battery, a motor, or even a truck in isolation. It buys transportation capacity.
03:33The real question is how much cargo can be moved, how reliably it can be moved, and how much that
03:37movement costs over the life of the vehicle. That is why the ETT-44,000 horsepower is almost
03:42a distraction. The important number may be 20 minutes. If BYD can make a 20-minute high-power
03:46charging stop practical on real European freight routes, the ETT-44 becomes more than an impressive
03:50electric truck. It becomes a test of whether battery electric long-haul freight can begin
03:53operating more like the diesel system it is trying to replace. And that is the part worth
03:57watching. For more Chinese EV technology explained clearly, subscribe to China EV World.
