This week Greg asks Jon and Jim is Whittingham should be on the hot seat and the biggest questions in college football.
Transcript
00:00Well, we certainly started to learn a lot about teams
00:03two weeks into conference play in earnest,
00:06and especially in the Big Ten,
00:07that's where we're going to spend a lot of time here.
00:09And starting with Michigan State,
00:10and their 2-0 record with their start
00:14looks long behind them in the rearview mirror
00:16after falling 31-3 at Wisconsin,
00:19it might not be long before they're looking forward to 2027.
00:24What team-wide attribute do the Spartans need most for next season?
00:28The Spartans need an infusion of blank.
00:32Talent.
00:33They need an infusion.
00:34I mean, you've got to have a talented quarterback,
00:37and you've got to have...
00:38They had a talented running back, but he's out for the season.
00:42And whether it's receivers, it's defensive backs,
00:45linebackers up front on both sides of the ball,
00:47you just need an infusion of talent.
00:51Can I say an enema?
00:53No, what I would say, they need explosive plays.
00:56You start looking around the country,
00:58and only one team has fewer explosive plays,
01:01plays of 20 or more yards than Michigan State.
01:03So some speed and explosive plays could really help this team out.
01:07I should have known you were going to ask me.
01:09Bowling Green.
01:10Oh.
01:12But...
01:12That too.
01:13A little bit further south than I thought.
01:15But if you want, just for your own knowledge,
01:18our state, not great at generating explosive plays.
01:21Michigan is 127th.
01:23Western is 127th.
01:25My chips are 132.
01:26And MSU is 136.
01:29Three yards and a cloud of dust.
01:30That's the state of Michigan.
01:31Yeah.
01:31Talking to a friend of mine who watches Michigan State more than I do,
01:34he said,
01:35Speed.
01:35Yeah.
01:36Michigan looked as inept as ever in a 20-14 loss at Minnesota.
01:40I thought the Monty Williams comparison to Kyle Whittingham was fading,
01:44but it is fully back on.
01:46Is Whittingham on the hot seat now?
01:50Should be, but there's no athletic director.
01:53And I started looking at his buyout.
01:54He's owed 75% of remaining salary,
01:57which I believe after this year,
01:58he'll be owed $33, $24 million buyout.
02:01He should be on the hot seat because it's Michigan, for God's sakes.
02:05But I don't think he actually is.
02:07Well, and yes, it should be, but probably not because, same thing,
02:11who's going to fire him and who's going to replace him?
02:13And when you're in transition at the AD,
02:17you're also in transition of the president.
02:19There's just no one to make that decision.
02:22The expectation is always to be in the playoffs.
02:25That ship has sailed.
02:27And so if you're not meeting those expectations,
02:30you should be on the hot seat.
02:32I mean, Sharon Moore won nine games.
02:34It's not acceptable for Kyle Winningham to win seven
02:37in his first season.
02:38Well, I hope you get to seven.
02:41Yeah.
02:42Congratulations.
02:43You are now the offensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines.
02:46It's about damn time.
02:47What would be your game plan for this season with this personnel?
02:51Didn't you interview for this job?
02:53No, the old line job, which that's going well, isn't it?
02:57Oh, boy.
02:59Tommy Carr.
03:00It's time for them to give him a shot.
03:03And I don't know if he'll be the answer.
03:05I really don't.
03:06Because if he was in there in the fourth quarter last week,
03:09I think he would have been sacked just like.
03:12But although I do think he probably would have at least had some of those
03:16balls inbounds.
03:17So a person, whether it was a defender or a receiver,
03:22could have had a chance to catch the ball.
03:23I think you, and it's not necessarily, again,
03:26I don't know that he does a better job.
03:28I think sometimes you just need to try and create a spark.
03:31And it could create the spark that generates something offensively.
03:35He's not going to be a running back and run the football.
03:38He's not going to be an offensive lineman and try and find a way to block up front.
03:43But it could just create that spark.
03:46We're going wishbone, baby.
03:47Fullback dive, quarterback keepers.
03:49Let's go.
03:49Keep it on the ground and punt the ball.
03:50Play defense option.
03:51That's right.
03:52Get the wingbacks involved.
03:54All right.
03:55Northwestern opened up their brand new Ryan field with a demolition of Penn
03:59State.
04:00Last week, the Wildcats hung with defending champion Indiana,
04:04while the Nittany Lions squandered a 17 point lead to aforementioned
04:08Wisconsin in a loss.
04:09Do the last two weeks say more about Northwestern or Penn State?
04:13Penn State.
04:14You're supposed to hit the ground running when you bring a two deep over from
04:17ISU.
04:18In this world of the portal, with this schedule, Penn State should be undefeated
04:23into October.
04:24Not two losses.
04:25These aren't losses to OSU or Oregon or Indiana.
04:28These are losses Penn State should not have.
04:29I think you could be right in answering either of these, but I think it says more
04:33about Northwestern and what David Braun has going there.
04:35They're a physical team.
04:37They're a disciplined team.
04:38They don't shoot themselves in the foot.
04:40They give themselves a chance to win.
04:41They're not as talented as Indiana.
04:43No mistake about it, but they gave themselves a chance to be in that game.
04:48They lost as they should have.
04:50But then you look at what they were doing against Penn State.
04:53They were the more disciplined team.
04:54Oh, we're all learning about Big Ten programs trying to infuse the mid-12, aren't we?
05:00Speaking of Ryan Field, my initial reaction to it was that it looks like an NFL stadium,
05:06and I don't mean that as a compliment necessarily.
05:09What differentiates an NFL stadium and a college stadium to you?
05:13Well, college stadiums are more brick and mortar, right?
05:17And when you look at the NFL stadiums, there's a lot of bells and whistles, a lot of shiny
05:22lights, and it's exactly what Ryan Field is.
05:25It's a nice field, by the way.
05:26It's great.
05:27I think it's awesome, and I think they're doing something to try and generate some
05:30excitement amongst their fans.
05:32Obviously, it all comes down to winning.
05:33They did that against Penn State, so you're going to have some of those things.
05:37But more of the college stadiums, they were built in 1929, 1930.
05:45You're going back 100 years, and college campuses sometimes don't have the room to
05:50build new shiny stadiums.
05:52In fact, this one was built on the footprint of Ryan Field.
05:55They had to find for a few years where we're going to play games.
05:57They used Wrigley Field.
05:58They used the field on the lake.
06:01There's more tradition.
06:02There's more age.
06:04It's more brick and mortar versus the shiny things.
06:09Yeah, it's older bones.
06:10I mean, Camp Randall was a war fort.
06:12You go back.
06:13These bigger stadiums, too, cathedrals with old bones, less about the frills and the
06:18private suites and more about the soul.
06:20Well, that's why when I played at Lambeau, I felt more like I was playing in a
06:24college stadium than I was in NFL stadium, which was awesome.
06:30Long, uninterrupted, dozens and dozens of rows of grandstands.
06:34Like, Ryan Field has got, like, levels to it, right?
06:37You see NFL teams, it's like 20 rows, suites, 20 rows, suites, 20 rows, suites.
06:41Northwest, Ryan Field's kind of like that.
06:43Give me 100 rows of fans, and that's it.
06:46Yeah.
06:47Number one, Texas takes on Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry this Saturday.
06:52Now, this game is known for its literal 50-50 fan split right at midfield of the
06:57Cotton Bowl.
06:58Would you like to see this game become a home-and-home series played in Austin and
07:03Norman?
07:04Yes.
07:05College football is better on college football campuses.
07:08I'll say the same for Florida and Georgia, the cocktail party in Jacksonville.
07:12And while John's glaring at me, how would you feel if Michigan and Ohio State played at
07:18Soldier Field?
07:19No, no.
07:20It should be one on campus and then the other the next year.
07:24Absolutely not.
07:25But they have been playing this game at the State Fairgrounds since 1929.
07:31The Cotton Bowl, which is where the State Fairgrounds is.
07:351930.
07:36Almost 100 years of tradition.
07:39You are like every other problem that is college football.
07:43Let's throw away tradition.
07:44I don't care about the 10 teams in the Big Ten or the Pac-12.
07:49Like, name me a couple of teams.
07:50Name me more than two teams in the Pac-12 right now.
07:53Texas State and Boise State.
07:55Fresno State.
07:56Fresno State.
07:57Colorado State.
07:58All the states.
07:59It's the state college conference.
08:01Like, the traditions matter in college football.
08:04Don't just throw away one of the great traditions.
08:07Yes, it should be split 50-50 right down the middle at the 50-yard line.
08:12It is a fierce rivalry.
08:14It should go back to the Red River shootout.
08:17Like, we don't have to be offended by so many damn words.
08:21Keep it there.
08:22Don't ever move it.
08:24Don't listen to Jim Costa.
08:25I'm not offended.
08:25I just think it'd be better if the campus has got to have that game.
08:28They all travel to it.
08:31Finally, who's on upset alert in week six?
08:34All right.
08:35I'm going to...
08:36Goosefraba.
08:37All right.
08:38There's a couple, I think, that could be on alert.
08:41I'm going to start with...
08:43And I'll see what you have in a second.
08:45But I'm going to start with Oregon.
08:47They are hosting UCLA.
08:50They are favored by 11 and a half.
08:53UCLA is finding a way to be relevant in the Big Ten.
08:59Mm-hmm.
09:00And it's that West Coast trip,
09:02so you don't have to worry about going across the country.
09:04They are playing high energy.
09:08I believe in my team.
09:11Smash mouth football.
09:13Give me the Bruins.
09:14And they're coming off a bye, right?
09:16Yeah.
09:16Two weeks to prepare for this big spot.
09:18I actually already bet that one this week.
09:21Oh.
09:22You're welcome.
09:22I like where your head's at.
09:23I'll give you the other one that I think is pretty clear.
09:25Missouri is on upset alert.
09:27Big number 14.
09:28Big emotional win over Florida.
09:31Can SEC teams not handle emotion?
09:33It's a sandwich spot because they've got a trip to Ole Miss the following week.
09:38In between is a sleepy 11 a.m. kickoff against unranked Texas A&M.
09:42Who, by the way, was a top 10 team preseason.
09:44There's enough talent.
09:45A little sandwich spot letdown spot for Missouri.
09:49I was going to give you a classic Pac-12 matchup.
09:53Boise State at Fresno State.
09:56Boise State favored by six.
09:58Fresno State.
10:00Hey.
10:02Sleeper pick to be that group of five.
10:05Group of six.
10:06However many groups there are now.
10:08You already gave us a Pac-12 game.
10:10UCLA, Oregon.
10:11Well, yeah.
10:12Well, that's a big 10 matchup.
10:14Who can keep track?
10:16I like your – I also looked at Fresno because they're home.
10:18Yes.
10:19A little chance to pull off a stunner and an upset Boise on alert.
10:22There's on campus.
10:2397-1.
10:24We'll see you next time.
10:24We'll see you next time.
