00:00Doug Hart, Scott Anderson, it is football season, the colleges kick off tomorrow, we do something called the college football
00:07blitz thingy, and it's time once again, gator heads or tails?
00:11I will go with heads.
00:13It is a head, do you want to receive or do you want to defer?
00:16I will defer.
00:17Alright, Clay's got a six pack of questions, let's go.
00:35Alright, question number one, Doug, predict how this fifth year NFL player lawsuit to return to play college football case
00:42is going to play itself out.
00:43Okay, so a judge is going to rule tomorrow in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and I'm going to predict that he's
00:50going to make a one-time exemption, will be granted fifth years for players that want to come back.
00:57And then I think the story is over because the rules will be set moving forward.
01:01Now some conferences will say we're still not recruiting those guys and others will take them.
01:05What's interesting is Andy Staples was reporting that there are people at LSU that actually want the judge to support
01:13the ruling to not allow players to come back, to just end the controversy.
01:18So the Lane Kiffin thing is making people at LSU uncomfortable with what he's trying to do, where there are
01:25some people there that want him to lose, but Lane Kiffin will recruit the pros.
01:32That's my prediction, and it sucks that courts are now making the rules for sports, but kind of courts are
01:38determining almost everything.
01:39If you don't get your way, you sue.
01:41Well, because the NCAA has no teeth, so this is where we're at, and I like that all these schools
01:50in the SEC, they voted 16-0 in favor of a move like this, but the head coach from LSU
01:56apparently wasn't the one that did the voting as he's still trying to get the guy in there.
02:00I think it's going to play out where nobody ends up playing.
02:04The lawsuits will continue, but there's not going to be any injunction that allows anybody to play immediately, so there's
02:09no immediate opportunities for these players.
02:11I think eventually you might see a cash settlement for those that are currently in the lawsuit, but there will
02:19be no new litigants involved.
02:21Cash settlement.
02:22Great call.
02:24That's where we're at.
02:25I would like to think common sense would end up ruling out, but I feel like common sense in society
02:29has hit the road already, Jack.
02:32But I can't believe, if the SEC is even saying as a whole, at least as a conference, yeah, we
02:38don't want this, that's one thing.
02:41Common sense doesn't matter in the law of court necessarily, right?
02:44It's legally what can be done and what can't be done.
02:48I kind of agree with you, Doug.
02:49I think for this year, they're going to let it happen, but moving forward, that's it.
02:54It's done, and I think even the courts have to realize, like, this is ridiculous.
02:57You can't come back.
02:59It's over.
02:59We're moving forward.
03:03All right, Michigan and Michigan State both have new head coaches, but outside of those head coaching hires, which hire
03:09intrigues you the most, Gator?
03:10I mean, look, this is college football.
03:12You see new coaches all over the place.
03:14It's always interesting.
03:15You get coordinators that are hired.
03:17You get guys coming from small schools to big schools.
03:20But I think when it comes to the most intriguing, you don't have to look far.
03:24This is the easiest one.
03:25It's Lane Kiffin going to LSU.
03:27All the controversy last year of leaving Ole Miss, who was going to coach that Ole Miss team late in
03:33that season and college football playoff stuff and all this.
03:36You get the off-season transfer portal frenzy that goes on every year, and Lane Kiffin fully embraces that.
03:44Now you've got this controversy about NFL players having a chance to come back and play it.
03:49Oh, look who's in the center of it all.
03:51It's Lane Kiffin.
03:52This guy has been a head coach at I don't know how many different places, and everywhere he goes, there's
03:58controversy.
03:59There's some sort of trail that's been blazed or fire that's been lit for sure, and it's already starting at
04:06LSU, and I'm here for it.
04:08I love it.
04:09I'll give you another one that I think is really, really interesting.
04:12The favorite to win the Southeastern Conference is Georgia.
04:15The second favorite to win the Southeastern Conference is Texas.
04:18And in a great covert op, Texas, in an effort to get a leg up on Georgia, hired Will Muschamp
04:27off of Georgia's staff to be the defensive coordinator back at Texas, where he made a name for himself.
04:33A great defensive mind leaves Georgia and goes to Texas.
04:37They're the two favorites in the SEC.
04:40And while they're not scheduled to play one another, if they meet up in the SEC title game, that becomes
04:46an elite subplot.
04:47And Will Muschamp, better as a defensive coach than a head coach.
04:51It's a super staff.
04:52Gator, I'm with you on this one, man.
04:54Lane Kiffin.
04:55I love storylines.
04:56I love drama.
04:57And they always seem to follow Lane Kiffin, no matter where he goes.
05:01He doesn't stop.
05:02It's always something.
05:03It's on the field.
05:04It's off the field.
05:05From the time he was in the NFL, wherever he goes.
05:09His storylines follow him.
05:10I think he likes it.
05:12That's the biggest intrigue for me outside of the local schools.
05:16All right.
05:17Which is better, college game day or Fox Big Noon kickoff?
05:21Okay.
05:22To me, game day is better.
05:24But I'm trying to break up with college game day.
05:26Oh.
05:27But I like Kirk Herbstreet.
05:29And I actually like college football game day, Pat McAfee.
05:33It's my favorite version of Pat McAfee.
05:36But I can't, and I can't break the old habit.
05:39The problem is Fox is aligned with the Big Ten.
05:43And the Big Noon kickoff game frequently previews a Big Ten game.
05:47They're at Indiana this weekend for Indiana, North Texas.
05:50They're at Michigan next weekend for Michigan, Oklahoma.
05:53And game day is aligned with the SEC.
05:56So I need to work harder because I like game day better.
05:59I've got to give Big Noon kickoff another chance because it's more locally programmed than game day.
06:06I don't spend a whole lot of time watching either of those shows.
06:10I'm not one of these guys that gets up on Saturday morning and gets ready to go to watch college
06:14football at 9.30 and flips.
06:16I don't know when they start at 10 or whenever they start.
06:18I don't do that.
06:19I'll flip them on probably around maybe 11.30-ish when I start hearing some stuff about the games coming
06:26up with the spreads because I like to gamble on the games.
06:29And I'll make some final decisions there when you hear some late news like, oh, so-and-so's not playing.
06:35Well, that's pretty big.
06:36Let me go back and look at this game.
06:38Plus, it's just I'm used to it, right?
06:40I think they've handled this like a boss that they are.
06:43They're the OG.
06:45They have great reporting.
06:46They have entertaining and really credible hosts.
06:50And I'm sorry, I'll take Nick Saban over Urban Meyer any day of the week.
06:54And I just, Herbert Street and that crew as opposed to, you know, Charles Woodson and Brady Quinn and those
07:01guys.
07:01It's just I like college game day a lot better.
07:04It's not even close.
07:05Yeah, I would personally punt on this if I didn't have to answer it because I don't, like you get,
07:09I actually don't watch a lot of pregame shows anymore.
07:11And that includes the NFL.
07:12So it's not even just college.
07:13It's just the pregame shows don't really do much for me.
07:16I'm not into the sad segments or whatever.
07:20You know what I mean?
07:20They're great.
07:21I get it.
07:22I need Rinaldi.
07:23I get it.
07:24They do it for people.
07:25It's not for me personally.
07:27I don't care.
07:28I need injury reports.
07:29And I need guys to actually watch the game.
07:30Sometimes I feel like some of these guys aren't even watching the games.
07:32They're just saying stuff.
07:33But since I have to pick one, which one is better in my book, I'm going to end up going.
07:37My 51 is the big noon kickoff.
07:39But I mean, honestly, ask me again next week.
07:44All right.
07:44Outside the local games, what matchup intrigues you the most this weekend?
07:48It's a big one Saturday night in Baton Rouge, Clemson at LSU.
07:53You got Dabo and Clemson, Lane Kiffin.
07:55They're trading barbs prior to the game.
07:57You got controversy with this, with what's going on with LSU and trying to get the NFL
08:02players to come and play.
08:03There's the portal philosophical differences between the two head coaches.
08:07One guy has completely embraced it and trailblazed with it, while the other guy is very reluctant
08:13to get into the portal.
08:14Hot seat potential for death in Death Valley for Dabo.
08:17I love this game.
08:18This is a great game to start up the season.
08:20I like two bitter rivalries.
08:22Games that have very fresh, bad blood.
08:25The Pac-12 broke up because those four schools bolted for the Big Ten.
08:30UCLA and Washington were amongst them.
08:33Left behind were Cal and Washington State.
08:36Left to fend for themselves.
08:37Well, lo and behold, this weekend, UCLA is at Cal.
08:40And UCLA is paying Cal Calimony for leaving the Pac-12.
08:47Washington is hosting Washington State.
08:49This is like having to sit down for dinner with the old girlfriend who has a new spouse.
08:55So I think the bitterness will be palpable in those two rivalry games this weekend.
09:00I've got SMU versus Florida State on Monday night.
09:03Growing up as a child in the 90s, Florida State will always have a place in my heart in the
09:08landscape of college football.
09:09The Tomahawk Chop, the co-heads, the spear.
09:13Jen Sturger.
09:14Yeah, exactly.
09:14I mean, and the night game, of course.
09:16And SMU is supposed to be good this year.
09:18So that's the game.
09:19And I think I'll be able to sit down and actually watch that entire game this weekend.
09:22So as dad life and the two young ones, I think I can put them to bed early enough.
09:27Nice.
09:27There you go.
09:31All right.
09:32The Big Ten announced Thursday that for all Friday conference games, they will allow
09:35the conversations between on-field officials and the replay booth to be broadcast live.
09:41Your thoughts?
09:42Love this.
09:43And I think transparency is nothing but a good thing when it comes to controversies.
09:48And look, we'll be able to understand why officials rule the way they rule.
09:52My only issue with this is it's only for the Friday night games.
09:55And the Big Ten has a full slate.
09:56This is like 16 games that they're going to do this.
09:59But I think it's them putting their toe in the water.
10:02Yeah.
10:03Well, I think they should fully dive into this pool.
10:05This is something that every fan loves.
10:07I haven't heard a single fan, when you watch this stuff, whether it's been with the alternate
10:11professional football league or when they occasionally have done this in bowl games to try to give
10:15you that feel for it.
10:16I haven't heard anybody come away saying, yeah, you know what?
10:19I don't like that.
10:19I don't like to hear what goes on behind the scenes between the officials and the replay
10:23booth.
10:24Of course you do.
10:25The answer is yes, yes.
10:26A billion times yes.
10:28It adds to the transparency that we all demand from college football.
10:31This should be done for every single televised game.
10:36You know, I first thought you're like, this is great for us as the fan.
10:39Of course, we get more behind the scenes.
10:41We get more truth.
10:42We think, right?
10:43This definitely opens themselves up for more criticism, though, which is surprised that
10:47which makes me surprised they're actually doing this.
10:49In the end, we're thinking this is great, right?
10:51We get to hear and see everything, but I bet you it makes us more mad than happy in the
10:56end when we actually get to see how they made their decision.
10:59It may, but the thing I find interesting about this is that as a fan watching it, you should
11:05get at least an explanation.
11:06You can disagree with the explanation, but you're going to get the explanation in real
11:10time.
11:10It's like the pool reporter stuff, though.
11:12We read it after and we just get more pissed.
11:14Yeah.
11:16Yeah.
11:16Yeah.
11:19All right, last one, boys.
11:20For the first time, the SEC will play a ninth conference game.
11:23How will this impact that conference?
11:25I'm not sure.
11:26I mean, like any conference, there'll be some good and some bad impact, but with the SEC,
11:32because they are loaded, much like the Big Ten, I think it actually could do more harm
11:38than good for them because you're going to have all these great matchups week in and
11:41week out.
11:42And at the end of the season, you might see a matchup that's going to knock somebody out
11:47of the college football playoff discussion, and we all know that the SEC and the Big
11:51Ten, they should control the whole thing.
11:53And let's, hey, let's get 24 teams and make 20 of them from the Big Ten and the SEC.
11:58I think this could do more harm than good for the SEC.
12:00Yeah, it's going to hurt the resumes for sure, because you're taking that auto-double away.
12:04Here's a very interesting thing about SEC scheduling.
12:06It was a tradition in the Southeastern Conference that for the 11th week, right before all the rivalry
12:12games, the tough ones at the end, the week before the big rivalry game, the SEC notoriously
12:17scheduled cupcakes.
12:19Those SEC athletic directors were burning up the phone, calling the Citadel and UT Chattanooga
12:23to try and get them on their schedule for late November before they played Auburn.
12:28You know, and now this year, there's only four of those games.
12:31So 12 SEC teams will play legitimate SEC opponents the week before.
12:36They won't get the breather right before the big finale.
12:39So it's going to hurt their resumes.
12:41Yeah, I agree, Doug.
12:42If this replaces the hair school for the blind tech, then I'm all for it, because that's
12:46what they were scheduling.
12:47And that's why you got bad haircuts.
12:49But no, more conference games.
12:51So I think all conferences is a good thing.
12:53So yes, bravo.
12:54There it is.
12:55That concludes the college football live animal mascot trophy game, marching band around
13:01the country blitz thingy.
13:04It's Carson Anderson.
13:05Carson, interesting exchange between Brad Holmes and a reporter.
13:11Oh, and you know who it is.
13:14Oh, we'll get to that today at 1102 on Carson Anderson on 97.1.
