Big Ten commissioner is pushing for it.

00:00I don't know what this is.
00:01Somebody sent the following text.
00:03Doug, you are most likely diluting yourself.
00:06The college football you want is illegal.
00:08Drive another nail in the coffin.
00:11I don't know what kind of college football I said I wanted.
00:16You lie.
00:17What is he talking about?
00:18No idea.
00:19Maybe he's talking about not paying attention, you know,
00:22Monday through Friday or Sunday through Friday and only Saturdays.
00:27Well, I don't know.
00:29So I guess I don't know what reference that has to do with anything I said.
00:34But if I didn't have this job, I would tune out all the other BS.
00:39I would tune it all out and just watch the games.
00:43So you guys both said that earlier, right?
00:45Yep.
00:45Isn't it easier for us up here?
00:47What if you're playing LSU and they have players from the NFL?
00:50And how do you tune that out when they literally it's in your face?
00:54I don't know.
00:54I don't know.
00:57Because you're rooting for your team and you don't.
00:59You know, when you lose, you're going to bring it up.
01:01I guarantee it.
01:02I'm intrigued at what this person thinks is illegal.
01:05I mean, I guess it has nothing.
01:07You're right.
01:08It's easier for us right now because the Big Ten and the Big Ten institutions
01:11have said we're not going to bring back players from the NFL.
01:14But that may change for college basketball, especially if LSU wins this case.
01:21College basketball will see a flood of players come back.
01:24If LSU wins, if this ruling stands.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Hey, fellas.
01:30Internet's been out since 1130 yesterday.
01:32Using my phone as a hotspot.
01:33You guys are keeping me going.
01:35Oh, well, thank you.
01:36Appreciate you listening.
01:38248-539-9797.
01:39By the way, if you make a prediction for Michigan or Michigan State,
01:42because this is the College Football of Michigan, Michigan State prediction show,
01:49get your predictions in them.
01:50We record them and revisit them at the end of the year.
01:53If you text one over, be sure to sign your name so that when the season is over,
01:58we can say who had the best prediction.
02:01This one from Jacob on Twitter.
02:03Michigan State fan here.
02:04Spartans go 3-9.
02:05Mojister, it's an interesting player that's not the quarterback.
02:08Cam Edwards.
02:09Strength, nothing, weakness, everything.
02:11I want a home-and-home with Mississippi State to determine the real MSU.
02:16That's interesting.
02:16That's using your noggin a little bit.
02:19You like that answer?
02:20I like that better than the North Carolina one.
02:22Yeah, you're literally perplexed by that.
02:24People just want to see matchups they've never seen before.
02:26I get it, but, you know, there are other schools that are highly ranked.
02:34That are better?
02:35Better than North Carolina, I think.
02:38All right, so the Big Ten and Tony Petiti went on the Andy and Ari show on On 3
02:47and said the Big Ten is willing to require teams to play 10 games against power conference opponents.
02:52If it's a scheduling concession, the SEC has demanded.
02:56And if it delivers the SEC support for a 2014 playoff.
03:03If.
03:05So there's two things about this.
03:10If you have to play one non-conference game against a power four team.
03:15Yeah.
03:16It sounds great in theory.
03:19But I think what you're going to get is most of the really good programs will be burning up the
03:27phones to the really bad programs.
03:31The most popular person in college athletics might become the athletic director at Wake Forest.
03:36Yeah.
03:38Because Oklahoma and Miami and Ohio State and Michigan and Notre Dame will all be calling.
03:44Notre Dame, I guess, has that scheduling agreement with the ACC.
03:47They're all going to be calling up Wake Forest.
03:49And they're all going to be calling up Kansas.
03:51And they're all going to be calling up schools of that ilk.
03:54Well, you know what they should do?
03:55They can make money off it.
03:57They can get it sponsored.
03:58They should have like a lottery or like, you know, all right, Michigan.
04:02Here you go.
04:03And then the wheel goes around.
04:06Kansas.
04:07Well.
04:08That would be pretty cool.
04:09If they took the scheduling of those games out of the hands of the schools.
04:14Yeah.
04:15I would have no issue with that.
04:17It'd be great.
04:18You know you're getting a home game or a road game.
04:19You just don't know against who.
04:21Right.
04:23That would be fantastic.
04:24You have like the road game on one wheel and the home team on the other.
04:28And that way every other year you change the dynamic.
04:34Yeah.
04:35I mean, I guess you would, if you're in a pool of teams that are all home one year and
04:39then all road the next, you'll never play any of those teams.
04:41Right.
04:42But still, they might not be able to make that work with the numbers.
04:47But it could be a game show.
04:50But I don't know anyone who wants a 2014 playoff.
04:55I do.
04:56Tony Petiti.
04:57That's it.
04:59Well, let's start with what a 2014 playoff.
05:01What are some of the consequences of a 2014 playoff?
05:04You probably will not have a conference championship game.
05:07Which I don't think anybody would lose sleep over.
05:09No, I think the SEC would in a certain way because of the tradition.
05:14It's like the Big East tournament and the ACC tournament in basketball.
05:18Even though they don't really mean that much, they're still important.
05:22And the Big Ten to a lesser extent because they were later to that party.
05:28Um, so you'd have no conference championship.
05:34Ball, some of the ball games would be meaningless, which they kind of are.
05:38Yeah, that doesn't matter.
05:39Yeah.
05:40But here's what does matter.
05:43Every year, more likely than not, when you get to the end, there are rivalry games with real meaning.
05:52You will be taking meaning away from Alabama-Auburn and Michigan-Ohio State.
06:00Those games will become less important if both teams are 10-2 and there's a 2014 playoff or 10-1
06:05or 9-2 or whatever because they're going to get in.
06:08And you're going to be putting more meaning on Kansas-Kansas State and Cal-Stanford.
06:12But do you think, let's say, hypothetically, Michigan-Ohio State-whatever, the game, they're both 11-1, whatever it is,
06:2310-2, whatever.
06:24It has to add up to 11.
06:26I know, I realize that.
06:29You're telling me that even though they both know they're going to be in the playoff, it's going to be,
06:34they're going to have like sit-out guys.
06:36I don't know if they're going to have sit-out guys, but it won't mean as much.
06:39It won't.
06:39And you are taking more meaning away from rivalry weekend.
06:45That's one.
06:46Two is, don't be fooled by this.
06:48Tony Petiti was a TV executive.
06:51Oh, yeah.
06:52He's running the Big Ten.
06:55Right now, on a 12-team playoff, there are 11 playoff games.
07:00There are 11 playoff games, none of which are on Fox.
07:04Fox is the Big Ten's television partner.
07:06Right.
07:07If you go to 24 teams, that means there are 12 more playoff games added that are up for bid.
07:15Tony Petiti is doing Fox's work here, their TV partner, to try and get Fox rights to postseason games.
07:24Nod, nod, wink, wink.
07:25Yeah, probably.
07:26And this is what, why are we doing this?
07:28Why are we doing this?
07:31We are doing it so that Fox is happy?
07:36Are we doing it so Tony Petiti can tout record earnings?
07:43I mean, at some point, the people in the game, the coaches, have to step in and say, enough.
07:51This 12-team playoff has been very popular.
07:55Very popular.
07:58And the only reason to expand it, there's not a screaming reason to expand it other than greed.
08:03Of course.
08:04And I know greed drives a lot of decisions.
08:06But this feels to me like, I feel like the Big Ten is trying to do the heavy lifting for
08:14its TV partner.
08:15They are.
08:16They are.
08:16There's no doubt about it.
08:17And I would love to see what would happen if, like, Netflix or Amazon Prime said, you know what, Fox,
08:23take your money away.
08:24This is what we're going to give to the Big Ten.
08:26And we'll dwarf that because that's what they do.
08:31And look, you know what I expect here, too?
08:34Because this is how everything's decided these days.
08:36This is going to end up in court.
08:39The 2014 playoff, there will be a judge ruling on it at some point.
08:44And if the NCAA is involved in the court case, they'll lose.
08:47Well, usually that's the case.
08:49But the bottom line is, this is, that's how you follow the money.
08:55You follow the money to Fox wanting playoff games.
09:012, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
09:04Now, maybe I'm wrong.
09:06Maybe the masses want this.
09:09But I don't have one person in my sphere saying, God, I hope they expand the playoff again.
09:14Me neither.
09:15I don't know anybody.
09:17I mean, if anything, I know a lot of people that would rather decrease from 12.
09:23This is just more evidence of the people, the suits that make these decisions that say, like, for example, like
09:29the expansion of the playoffs, like you guys were talking about.
09:31No fan asked for this, but they're going to probably end up giving it to us anyways.
09:35Roger Goodell and the international teams and the games.
09:37No fan.
09:38He didn't ask any fans if they wanted.
09:40Because no fans say, hey, we should play in Munich.
09:42No, no one says that.
09:43But they're giving it or forcing it on us because money.
09:47The guys in suits answer to money and the owners.
09:50And that's who they answer to, not to the fans.
09:53You're right.
09:542-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
09:57I want to get to, and if you're a 2014 playoff proponent.
10:00Tell us why.
10:01I'd like to hear why.
10:02Yeah.
10:03In the meantime, Stoney had a public run-in last night.
10:07We'll get to that story at 1131 on 97.1.
10:10We'll get to that story at 1131 on 97.1.
