00:15All right, it's Carson Anderson,
00:17and on Wednesdays we do the college football blitz thingy.
00:33Scott, heads or tails?
00:36Heads.
00:36He calls a head.
00:37It is a tail.
00:39I'll receive.
00:40All right, Doug, question number one.
00:42Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormack said yesterday,
00:46nothing has been done yet with the college football playoff.
00:48It's only speculation, but Nick Saban has already blasted it.
00:52Is there any chance this doesn't happen?
00:54I think this is interesting because Nick Saban follows the voice.
00:58He's not doing this because the fans said it,
01:00but it's what the fans are saying, too.
01:02Most fans are blasting this thing.
01:04They don't want it.
01:05They recognize the value of the regular season
01:08and feel like a bloated college football playoff is nothing but a money grab,
01:12and they're right, and Saban doesn't like it.
01:14Yormack, though, is the first sort of person in a position of power
01:18that said anything like, hey, this isn't final,
01:20and there's no other credible reporting.
01:23Do I think it's possible to put the toothpaste back in the tube?
01:28More so than a week ago, I think it's possible.
01:32I don't – right now, if I'm going to bet, it's going to happen.
01:36It'd be refreshing to see somebody in sports do something like leave money on the table
01:40and just do what's in the best interest of the game.
01:42But I wonder if the groundswell of pushback on this is going to lead to them really strongly reconsidering this
01:55and the fact that now a conference commissioner – the problem is it's a conference commissioner
01:59that's not the Big Ten of the SEC.
02:02Do I think it's possible? Yes.
02:03Do I think it's likely? No.
02:05I think there's always a chance.
02:07There's always a chance that the networks can step up and offer more money to protect the bowl system
02:13and, more importantly, the conference championship games
02:15because those are games where they make some serious money.
02:17I think there's a chance that the fans' voices might actually get heard.
02:20I mean, after that very scientific Brett McMurphy poll that he put out there on Twitter,
02:25I mean, 75% of the fans disapprove of expanding it to this level.
02:30So I think there is that chance.
02:32In the end, money's going to win out, so we're going to have to follow money to find a solution.
02:37But because the story leaked last week, it kind of gives people an idea of how much money
02:42they're going to have to come up with to try to squash this thing.
02:46Because I really think that the best solution is to keep it the way it is
02:50and have conference championship games because it means that that's more games that matter.
02:55I want to see it that way.
02:57You guys know how I feel about this stuff, man.
02:59There's too much money to be made, so it's going to eventually happen.
03:02I guess there's a slight door open to keep hope alive, if you want to say,
03:06but hope is going to die eventually because too much money is to be made here.
03:10I don't like it, but this was always the end goal to have more money.
03:13It doesn't matter what the fans want and think.
03:15Look at the international game expansions with the NFL.
03:18No fans were...
03:20Did we take calls and texts all day about,
03:21hey, we need to be in Europe, guys.
03:23We need to be in, you know, Australia.
03:25We need to be in Brazil.
03:26No, they just did it because they know that's what helps grow their pocketbooks.
03:30Same thing with college football.
03:33Our rampant speculation that Ohio State quarterback Julian Sane is done for the year.
03:39Ryan Day said Tuesday it's doubtful Sane returns during the regular season.
03:43Is Ohio State done as a national championship contender?
03:46They're not done yet.
03:48I think the schedule helps them out, not only in terms of who they have left on the schedule,
03:52but more importantly because they don't have to play this week.
03:54They've got a bye week, so they've got some time here to really give these two quarterbacks
03:59that are going to have to step up a chance to earn the spot.
04:03Now, maybe it's already accepted that Luke Fahey is going to be the quarterback.
04:07He's the guy that came in the game for Julian Sane against Indiana,
04:10but Taven St. Clair has been used a little bit this year as well.
04:13Bigger quarterback, more of a bruiser runner, too.
04:17But they've got a chance here.
04:19And it's, you know, the games against Oregon, USC, and Michigan looked a lot more daunting
04:25before the season began to perhaps what they do right now.
04:29But, Ken, you always say be careful of the schedule game.
04:31I get it.
04:32I'll be careful of that.
04:34But I think they've got a chance to, because they've got a great defense,
04:37they've got two really good running backs, they've got ridiculously good receivers,
04:41that they can still figure things out and be in the hunt.
04:44So Fahey and St. Clair are going to split first team reps.
04:47St. Clair, a highly regarded recruit.
04:50And I'm sure Ohio State's hoping they tap into their inner JT Barrett,
04:54or excuse me, Cardell Jones, who came in for JT Barrett the one year.
04:58And led to wins over Wisconsin, Oregon, and USC.
05:05I don't know.
05:06They won three games.
05:08They won the Big Ten championship game and two college football playoff games.
05:13And went on to have a spectacular scholastic career.
05:17And look, ESPN's College Football Power Index ranks Ohio State's remaining strength of schedule
05:24as ninth toughest in the country.
05:25That's relative to everybody else.
05:27So it's no cakewalk, at least according to that metric.
05:30I think what works against them, too, is a few years ago, Florida State's Jordan Travis got hurt,
05:34and it impacted their college football playoff bid.
05:37So those guys are going to have to play out of their minds.
05:39I think it's probably done for their national championship dreams.
05:44But I guess you never know.
05:47Yeah, Doug, I'm with you.
05:47I think it's probably done.
05:50I don't want to completely count them out because you really never know.
05:55But something that's always stuck with me, and I don't think I'll ever get rid of it,
05:58is when Nick Saban benched Jalen Hurts at halftime of the title game,
06:02and Tua came in as a freshman and won the game.
06:05That blew my mind that he would do that, make such a big move in a big game.
06:10Freshman quarterbacks, especially for me, I don't follow every freshman quarterback in college football.
06:15They're so unknown.
06:15Maybe he's ready for the moment.
06:17I have no idea.
06:18I doubt it, though, Doug, so I'm with you.
06:20They're probably out of national championship contention, but they're not going to give up, that's for sure.
06:25What is the best matchup this weekend?
06:28Okay, so this is interesting because it's the term matchup.
06:31I think there is going to be a wild game played at Cincinnati this weekend.
06:38Number eight, Texas Tech is undefeated.
06:41Cincinnati's got a top 15 rushing offense.
06:44Their quarterback, J.C. French, is pretty good, but Cincinnati's defense is terrible.
06:49And Texas Tech, you don't want to have a terrible defense against Texas Tech.
06:54I think this is going to be a wild shootout.
06:57And eighth-ranked 6-0 Texas Tech against 4-2 Cincinnati, I think will be a highly entertaining game.
07:04And I think Texas Tech should be on upset alert.
07:07Interesting.
07:08I'm going with the Battle of the Tigers.
07:11Take you down to Auburn, Alabama, where Auburn is hosting LSU.
07:15Now, it's no big deal with the rankings right now.
07:17Now, LSU is 18, and Auburn is currently unranked.
07:20However, did you see what Auburn did last week?
07:24They done upset the Georgia Bulldogs.
07:27That's what happens.
07:29LSU needs to stack wins to stay in the playoff hunt.
07:32They think they're a really good team, and they might be a really good team.
07:34They have to absolutely win this game.
07:37And yet, Auburn has to validate that win they just had last week when they knocked off the number one
07:42team in the country.
07:44It's a tough game for the Tigers, either way.
07:46So, best matchup for me, this is just a selfish pick.
07:50It's what game do I care about the most.
07:52And I'm a sucker for big-ranked matchups.
07:54Ole Miss, Texas.
07:55I mean, you have big names.
07:56They're both ranked, both sides of the ball.
07:58That's the one I care about the most.
08:00So, that's the one I'm going to be watching out of all the games scheduled.
08:06All right.
08:07Which college football team's rise to prominence is the most impressive?
08:12Northwestern, UCLA, or Kentucky?
08:14It's a good question to ask, and the teams have done it in different ways.
08:18You know, Kentucky's going with Will Stein as their head coach, who was only a coordinator beforehand.
08:22You know, UCLA's turned things over with James Madison's coach, Edwin Chesney, and they've done a great job.
08:29They're undefeated right now.
08:30I'll bet they just lost their quarterback for the rest of the season, or at least they announced he's gone
08:34for the rest of the year.
08:35But I'm going to go with Northwestern and the program that David Braun has built there.
08:40He took over for Pat Fitzgerald on an interim basis, and he still holds the job.
08:45He's been there for three-plus years now.
08:47And they have actually done something that you don't see college football teams do all that often.
08:52He has built the team.
08:54He's built it through recruiting.
08:56He's built it through reputation.
08:57And then they finally dipped their toe into the transfer portal, and they've resurrected the career of Aiden Childs.
09:03I like what Northwestern has done.
09:06I think they're a sleeping giant, given all the potential donors that they have to go to if NIL gets
09:14sorted out and he can figure what their parameters are.
09:17Northwestern has as big a chance as anybody in the country to dip into those coffers, and it could be
09:22a scary scene of what they've done.
09:23They just built this brand-new, beautiful stadium.
09:26Look out for Northwestern.
09:28I'm going to go with Kentucky.
09:29They go from 5-7 a year ago to 6-1 right now.
09:32Their NIL budget is $24.6 million, which ranks 13th in the Southeastern Conference, and they have the second toughest
09:41strength of schedule in college football.
09:43I will say Kentucky's turnaround to 6-1 has been the most impressive.
09:48Is that schedule tough because of what they've played or because of what's coming up?
09:51Because they've got a gauntlet.
09:52Well, they have beaten two ranked teams so far, both in the top 10, and they have a gauntlet coming
09:57up.
09:58So I'm going to go with Northwestern as well, Gator.
10:00I just think my main reason is they're probably the only school that I named off that probably doesn't really
10:06even care about sports.
10:07Basketball, football, it doesn't matter.
10:08The other schools, even if it's Kentucky, they care about basketball, right?
10:11UCLA, they care about basketball.
10:13I don't think Northwestern cares about sports.
10:15Those are some scholars over there, my friend.
10:19All right, another week, another past interference controversy.
10:23Should Skylord help the officials out?
10:25No, the NFL did this for a year, and they dropped it.
10:30Why did they drop it?
10:31Because it took a ton of time.
10:32There were 81 coaches' challenges.
10:34And you know how many of those challenges got overturned when it was all said and done?
10:38Only 13.
10:39The return wasn't there in the NFL, which probably has a better system and better officials than the college game.
10:45And the other thing is each college conference does things differently, as we've learned, when it comes to things like
10:51the Hawkeye system.
10:52There's no uniformity.
10:53I don't think they can do this or should do it.
10:55See, I look at this a little differently.
10:57When I think of Skylord, I think of somebody who assists, not somebody who reviews.
11:02I mean, reviews are a different thing.
11:04I don't necessarily want interference reviewed.
11:07What I want is for when you get a play that's pretty controversial and pretty obvious it's going to be
11:11controversial,
11:11I want the officials to gather together and start talking like they're actually having a conversation about what's happening here.
11:18Hey, what did you see?
11:18What did you see?
11:19Talk it over.
11:20In the meantime, Skylord is reviewing it.
11:23And if it's something that's obvious, like what we saw in the Alabama-Georgia game or what we saw, what
11:28was the game last week where they had BYU and Notre Dame,
11:32I think that Skylord can simply whisper down to them, it's blatant interference.
11:36Call it.
11:36And they're like, well, they throw a flag.
11:38After discussion, we've decided it's defensive pass interference.
11:42That's where I love Skylord's impact.
11:45Yeah, I love the assist replay, Gator, but I think with pass interference, it is a different animal.
11:51I'm pro video assist.
11:52I'm pro reviews.
11:54But with pass interference, I'm just not sure.
11:56You get into this gray area, it's just so subjective, even if it is, as you would say, obvious, right?
12:01But then I think that's the one area that you can't assist or review on.
12:07I think you just have to count on the human on the field, and there's going to be human error
12:11involved with that, unfortunately.
12:18All right, last one here.
12:19Notre Dame lost to BYU.
12:21Indiana lost to Ohio State.
12:23And Georgia lost to Auburn.
12:25However, all three losers are still in the top ten.
12:28Which one of these three has the best chance to bounce back and win it all?
12:32I think it's Notre Dame.
12:34First of all, you know, they got screwed against BYU and should have had another chance to win that game,
12:41and then we wouldn't even be talking about this.
12:42They've got a really good quarterback who's smart, makes great decisions.
12:45They've got an excellent head coach who never seems to lose his cool, keeps everyone on an even keel.
12:51They have a really good defense.
12:53It's just an all-around, really sound football team.
12:56And for those reasons, I think Notre Dame is still, they control everything.
13:00Plus, they only have one real game left on their schedule.
13:02It's a massive one in a couple weeks against Miami that we're all going to be dying to watch.
13:07But beyond that, they have like a game against SMU at the end of the season.
13:12That's not as big as these games have been.
13:13I think out of all three of these teams, the best unit on the field is Indiana's defense.
13:19So I'm going to go with Indiana.
13:21And I'm going to cite what happened last Saturday.
13:24Ohio State running back, Bo Jackson, worst game of the year.
13:27Jeremiah Smith, worst game of the year.
13:29Julian Sane, worst game of the year.
13:31I say it because of my respect for Ohio State and what they put on the field and what Indiana's
13:35defense did to them.
13:36I'm going with Indiana.
13:37Yeah, it's the obvious call.
13:38They're the blue-blood football school, Doug.
13:40Indiana, I'm with you, man.
13:42What has Ohio State and Notre Dame ever done in college football?
13:45Cignetti lost a very close game to Ohio State.
13:48I don't think he lets them fall out of it.
13:50There you go.
13:52And that concludes the college football blitz thingy.
13:55We'll get back to your phone calls next.
13:57248-539-9797.
13:59It's Carson Anderson on 97.1.
