00:00:31Hello, and welcome to another episode of the William Branham Historical Research Podcast.

00:00:35I'm your host, John Collins, the author and founder of William Branham Historical Research

00:00:40at william-branham.org, and with me I have my co-host, minister, and friend, Cheno Ross,

00:00:46pastor and the voice of the understanding scripture and truth by Cheno D. Ross' YouTube channel.

00:00:52Cheno, as you know, I try very hard to avoid theology, but there are certain cases when

00:00:58the history is literally intertwined so thickly with the theology that you can't really separate

00:01:04the two, and what we're going to be talking about today is one of those cases.

00:01:08You almost can't talk about the latter rain without talking about the theology if you're

00:01:13looking at it from a historical perspective.

00:01:16So people who see me put on my theology hat, I'm actually putting on my historian hat again,

00:01:20but there's a book, I don't know if you're familiar with it, it's called The Spirit and

00:01:26the Bride.

00:01:27It was written in 1907, and in 1907, as the Azusa Street Revival is in its early stages,

00:01:35it's starting to break out, there was this notion that the former and latter rain mentioned

00:01:40in Joel's prophecy was written in part to Israel and fulfilled on the day of Pentecost and Acts,

00:01:47and then was, all of that was a type for what was happening with Pentecostalism 1907.

00:01:54It gets a little bit murky when you study the details of this, because later on, as Pentecostalism

00:02:01began to fade, the latter rain movement began to emerge, they started to claim that, well,

00:02:07the day of Acts was the day of Pentecost, and that has continued forever, and we've always

00:02:12been in the latter rain.

00:02:13And so, there's this kind of, I don't know, I want to call it twisting, but it's this disturbance

00:02:20in the way that things were laid out historically, that really, if you don't examine that, you

00:02:26can't understand how the movement evolved in the way that it did.

00:02:29So, it's going to be a little bit difficult for me to walk through some of this theologically.

00:02:34I'll let you cover most of the theological parts.

00:02:36But historically, what I can tell you from the examination that I've been doing in the

00:02:41podcast, I've been doing a few of them alone, untangling all of this mess, I can tell you

00:02:46that there's a lot more mess to untangle.

00:02:49And with that, I'll hand it over to you.

00:02:52Well, the lack of precision is certainly a part of the mess, trying to figure out when

00:02:57did the latter rain fall?

00:02:59You know, if it's rain, it had to fall.

00:03:01Well, when did the latter rain fall?

00:03:03When did the former rain fall?

00:03:04But you know, John, we are kind of at the beginning of what I wanted to discuss regarding

00:03:09Dr. Hobart Freeman's views on eschatology.

00:03:13Come on down, Ms. Jumpers.

00:03:16Oh, well, there she is.

00:03:19We've been looking at his views on eschatology, how they relate to the end times, how they relate

00:03:26to Israel.

00:03:27Um, and so this will also come into play with what we're going to talk about today regarding

00:03:33the latter rain.

00:03:34I think last time we were looking at the restoration of Israel as a nation in 1948, in May of

00:03:401948,

00:03:41they became a sovereign country again, which is any way you cut it is a miraculous event,

00:03:48whether you see it as a predicted event in scripture.

00:03:52It's just, it was before then unheard of that any nation had not existed for 2000 years and

00:03:59had no country.

00:04:01And all of a sudden they're back in their land and they're a sovereign state.

00:04:04So anyway, you cut it, that was a miraculous event for Israel.

00:04:07And then in 1967, she was able to get most of almost all of her capital city of Jerusalem

00:04:14back.

00:04:15And I just want people to understand, I'm not saying that those two events, um, aren't

00:04:22in some measure, a fulfillment of biblical prophecy in some sense.

00:04:28I, you know, I tend to think that they are, um, but I don't think that we can use those

00:04:33two events to date things.

00:04:35And that's exactly what Dr.

00:04:37Freeman did.

00:04:38And that's exactly what everyone else has done.

00:04:41They look at that phrase in Matthew 24 and Luke 21 and Mark 13, it says this generation

00:04:48will not pass away.

00:04:50And then they're saying, okay, that means therefore that the generation of one or the

00:04:57other of those events, either Israel getting her country back or her city back, that is

00:05:03the last generation.

00:05:04And so you obviously start date setting and that's exactly what was happening with Hobart.

00:05:10He was real clever in the fact he would say, well, the Bible says we can't predict the

00:05:16day or the hour, but that doesn't mean, and you know, people go down that line.

00:05:21That doesn't mean we couldn't predict how about the week or how about the month or how about

00:05:26the year?

00:05:26Um, people get real cute and fancy.

00:05:29And I think when Jesus said, no man will know the day or the hour, I don't think, I don't

00:05:34think he meant by that, but, but you can know which week of the year it is.

00:05:38I think that's just a real precise statement saying that it's going to be a, an event that's

00:05:45not predictable, that you will, you will not know when the son of man is going to return.

00:05:51What I didn't realize early on, um, even though I had been a part of the charismatic movement

00:05:58for several years before I knew and heard of Dr.

00:06:01Freeman, what I did not recognize is how much he borrowed from everyone else.

00:06:05Because he came into my life early.

00:06:09I was only 17 years old when I first heard some of Dr.

00:06:13Freeman's tapes.

00:06:14And I did not realize that this business about the end times and Israel and being able to

00:06:22narrow it down to some time period in our life actually had been taught by people like

00:06:29Derek Prince.

00:06:30Derek Prince was huge on Israel.

00:06:32You know, he was big on deliverance.

00:06:34He was big on fasting.

00:06:35He actually lived, I think, with his second wife in Israel.

00:06:40And Derek Prince carried a lot of sway probably because he was, um, English.

00:06:48So we had that British accent, which just always makes you sound way smarter than the rest of

00:06:53us in the world who speak the English tongue.

00:06:56And he was also educated in some colleges and, um, universities in England.

00:07:01So, you know, he, he carried some, some credentials with him that made him a very popular speaker

00:07:08in the charismatic movement.

00:07:10And another one, he's been dead for what?

00:07:13I don't know, 20 or 25 years.

00:07:14Um, but another big name person that I've only barely mentioned, and I think you've actually

00:07:21done some podcasts on was the, um, Calvary Chapel founder, Chuck Smith, who also, I think,

00:07:29has been dead for 10 or 15 years.

00:07:31Chuck Smith, this goes way back to the mid 1960s.

00:07:36So he's actually, um, in the charismatic movement on the scene prior to Dr.

00:07:40Freeman, um, you know, he founded this, the church, I believe in, um, Costa Mesa, California,

00:07:48just like a little group of, you know, two dozen people in someone's home probably.

00:07:53And, you know, that grew to a mega church and, um, I've never been a part of the Calvary

00:08:00chapel movement.

00:08:02I've never even attended a Calvary chapel, Calvary church service that I can remember in all of

00:08:09my 50 years.

00:08:10Um, but I know there are hundreds, if not several thousand of them spread everywhere.

00:08:15So I just wanted to read something that came from Chuck Smith.

00:08:20This all relates to what we're saying with Dr.

00:08:23Freeman.

00:08:24This is something that you can just go online and find.

00:08:27Um, and so here, uh, it says that in his 1978 book entitled the end times,

00:08:39Chuck Smith, uh, was convinced that the generation of 1948 would be the last generation.

00:08:48See that this is nothing new with Dr.

00:08:51Freeman.

00:08:51This has been something taught by a lot of different Pentecostal and charismatic people.

00:08:57So keep the dates in mind.

00:09:00Um, he's writing this in 1978 and he's saying that the generation of 1948 would be the last

00:09:08generation and that the world would end by 1981 at the latest.

00:09:15Uh, he said, this goes on to say that he further supported his convictions again in a 1980 manuscript

00:09:25entitled future survival in which he said that his understanding of biblical prophecies has

00:09:34convinced him that the Lord will come for his church before the end of 1981.

00:09:41Hobart was saying this in the late sixties and in the early seventies.

00:09:45Um, Chuck Smith's writing a book in 1980 saying, you know, by the end of 1981, the Lord's going

00:09:53to come.

00:09:53If that's not date setting, I don't know what is.

00:09:57I know it did not, he did not say a day, week, month, year, but he is still setting a

00:10:03date that by the end of 81 that the Lord's going to return.

00:10:09And I just, you know, I was a part of all of this.

00:10:11I wasn't that familiar with Chuck, um, Smith back then, but I was a part of this movement,

00:10:16this whole movement that was date setting.

00:10:19You know, this, these were the days of how Lindsay, um, late great planet earth, um, Satan

00:10:24is alive and well on planet earth.

00:10:26These were the days of Salem Kirbin who wrote the very popular book, six, six, six that, you

00:10:32know, just had all kinds of speculation about the last days.

00:10:37And I think that a lot of this was connected to Israel.

00:10:42It was, Israel was a huge deal getting their country back and getting most of the city of

00:10:47Jerusalem back.

00:10:49So Chuck went on to say that he could be wrong, but in the same sentence continued, it's a

00:10:57deep conviction in my heart and all my plans are predicated upon this belief.

00:11:05I don't know if he really lived that, but taking him at his word, if all of your plans are

00:11:11predicated

00:11:12upon, you've got one year left.

00:11:14You know, you're, you're probably selling all your goods and giving to the poor, you

00:11:18know, and quitting your job.

00:11:19As long as you got enough money to last a year, that's all you need.

00:11:22And this is the way some people took it.

00:11:26And so they, they lived accordingly.

00:11:29Um, of course we're in what year, John?

00:11:332026.

00:11:34So that didn't happen, right?

00:11:36We know that that didn't happen in 1980 or 1981.

00:11:39So when it didn't happen, then he looked back later and just shrugged it off as maybe, um,

00:11:48a possibility that he had raised in the past.

00:11:51And it wasn't a possibility.

00:11:52He had written a book about it.

00:11:54Um, later he, he said that setting dates for the end of the world was wrong.

00:11:59And he said that he came close to doing that earlier in his life.

00:12:04Well, you know, and Chuck Smith is dead and gone.

00:12:09So, and I'm not a Chuck Smith hater or opponent or anything.

00:12:13I'm just saying that he, Dr. Freeman, all of these people were a part of this incredible

00:12:20thing after the six day war and Israel got Jerusalem back in June of 1967, just pulling

00:12:28their hair out saying, I know now Luke 21, 24 has been fulfilled and it wasn't, but it's

00:12:35been fulfilled and Jesus is coming back any day.

00:12:39And I just wonder the people listening to the podcast, who, who remembers this, who was

00:12:44alive back then and how did it affect their life?

00:12:47You mentioned earlier that Derek Prince had the English accent and he was so readily adopted

00:12:53as educated because he, well, he was educated, but he got a lot more mileage out of his education

00:13:00because of his accent.

00:13:01I'll say it like that.

00:13:01I wish that I had more eloquent speech and I had the British accent because I could do

00:13:06this too, because what I'm about to say will cause all of the hate mail in the comments.

00:13:10I can tell you, I have done extensive research on Chuck Smith, not just because he was a mentor

00:13:18to various people, teaching them the latter rain doctrine, but also because of the strong

00:13:25ties that he had to all of this.

00:13:27Chuck Smith has ties to people that are in my research and you can't really make the transition

00:13:33from latter rain to charismatic movement without Chuck Smith as one of the linchpins.

00:13:37He is one of the linchpins.

00:13:39And yet at the same time, as you mentioned, he has doomsday prophecies like William Branham.

00:13:45He has, and Branham was not the only one that did this.

00:13:49He was strongly influenced by people like Gordon Lindsay, who was also writing all these timetables

00:13:55and these charts that had doomsday predictions.

00:13:58And they would all say the same thing.

00:14:00It's no man knows the hour, but look at these calculations.

00:14:03And they're doing it exactly, doing exactly the thing that they shouldn't be doing.

00:14:08But Chuck Smith was also the, I believe he was the campaign manager for Paul Kane.

00:14:14Paul Kane mentions this on recording.

00:14:16I've got a clip of that recording.

00:14:18Chuck Smith also carried forward into the charismatic movement, the Moses model.

00:14:22And this is probably the most significant thing that I'll talk about with regards to Chuck Smith.

00:14:29The Moses model is important because of what you said earlier.

00:14:33It is a British-Israel tie.

00:14:35They are bringing forward the idea that the Old Testament was written to the ancient Jews

00:14:40and we read it in two parts.

00:14:42Yes, it's written to them.

00:14:44It's also written to us today.

00:14:46And we heard these passages.

00:14:48I can't tell you how many times I heard this one passage from Matthew 24.

00:14:52It says,

00:14:53Let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

00:14:55Let no one on the housetop go down.

00:14:58Pray that your flight might be in winter, not the Sabbath.

00:15:00We were taught that that was us.

00:15:02We have to be prepared to flee.

00:15:04We have to be prepared.

00:15:06And no one seemed to catch that it said those who are in Judea.

00:15:11To the average listener today, you read that and you would never tie those two together.

00:15:17Those that statement to the body of Christians today.

00:15:20But if you bring in British Israelism, you can because it's written partially to the Jews,

00:15:26partially to people today.

00:15:27This was a strong lateral reign type theology.

00:15:32And historically speaking, when you bring that type of theology,

00:15:35you can make any passage turn into anything that you want it to.

00:15:39And you can literally make the Bible say whatever you want to.

00:15:43Because I'm actually taking it out of the Bible context and I inject it into any context that I want.

00:15:48The point I'm trying to make is this.

00:15:50It wasn't just Branham that did this.

00:15:52It wasn't just Hobart Freeman.

00:15:53But this was an entire system.

00:15:56Once the system was built,

00:15:57it enabled people like Hobart Freeman, like William Branham,

00:16:01like all of these other very destructive cult leaders,

00:16:04to hijack the minds of the people

00:16:06and try to teach them something the Bible said that it actually did not say.

00:16:10And I've always been amazed, John,

00:16:12how Hobart was very successful in doing just what you said,

00:16:17although he didn't do it with that verse in Matthew 24,

00:16:20but he did it with many others,

00:16:21where there's an actual verse in the Bible

00:16:23and the verse actually contradicts what they're about to say

00:16:27because it says Judea and come down from the top of your house.

00:16:30Look, I don't ever hang out on the top of my house

00:16:33because my house has a sloped roof like this.

00:16:36The houses in Israel had a flat roof and they spent time up there.

00:16:41So if he told me to come down from the top of my house,

00:16:45there'd be a problem because I don't ever go up there

00:16:47except to check a shingle after a storm.

00:16:49You know, I live in my house.

00:16:51But the point is, you're right, they actually used the verse

00:16:54and somehow were just able to slide right through

00:16:59that reference to Judea and the top of the house

00:17:02and even the Sabbath day.

00:17:03It's obviously a Jewish context there

00:17:06because it's okay if you travel in other parts of the world

00:17:09on Saturday or Sunday.

00:17:11It's just that was a problem for Israel

00:17:13that they could only travel so many furlongs on the day.

00:17:17They can only get over to like Bethany or the Mount of Olives

00:17:19and beyond that, the rabbis had figured out

00:17:22how many steps were involved in work

00:17:24and once you went beyond the number of steps,

00:17:27the rabbis said, that would have constituted work

00:17:30on the Sabbath day and you weren't allowed to do that.

00:17:32But it's amazing that, yeah, it says Judea,

00:17:36so somehow that must apply to Israel in Judea

00:17:40and not apply to me in Kentucky or you in Indiana.

00:17:43And yet these ministers, because they're crafty

00:17:48in the way they speak and they have an agenda,

00:17:53they're not, I hate to say this,

00:17:56but Dr. Freeman did not read the Bible

00:17:58the way that we are supposed to read it

00:18:01and that is to see what it says.

00:18:04In other words, let the scriptures inform us

00:18:07of its theology.

00:18:09We take our theology and we go to the Bible

00:18:13and try to find a verse to support it and back it up.

00:18:16And we, I mean, I guess theoretically,

00:18:19we all know that's an improper way to read the Bible

00:18:23and yet that's the way these false ministers

00:18:26definitely read the Bible

00:18:27and the way they have trained their followers

00:18:29to read the Bible.

00:18:31And it's simply not a valid way to do it.

00:18:33But yeah, it's doomsday.

00:18:36In the 1970s, it was doomsday in a happy way.

00:18:43I mean, they weren't thinking at the Glory Barn,

00:18:47drink the Kool-Aid.

00:18:49They weren't thinking that.

00:18:50It was a happy doomsday.

00:18:53You know, Jesus is coming back.

00:18:54So you need to prepare for his soon return.

00:18:59You don't need to prepare for the rest of your life

00:19:04in the situation where he might not return.

00:19:09You know, they just weren't taught that

00:19:11because Hobart was convinced,

00:19:14the people before him were convinced,

00:19:17and the people after Hobart,

00:19:19he convinced them,

00:19:21hey, the Jews got their city back.

00:19:24And that fulfilled in 1967 in June

00:19:27in the Six-Day War.

00:19:28And listen, that fulfilled Luke 21, 24.

00:19:34So, and if we're that generation,

00:19:36you go talk about the fig tree,

00:19:38which we did last week.

00:19:40Israel is a fig tree

00:19:41and Israel is no such thing.

00:19:42And it never says that there.

00:19:44It never says if something happens in Israel,

00:19:47it's like leaves budding

00:19:48and you can know

00:19:49that you're going to be living in the last days.

00:19:51That is not at all what it says,

00:19:53but it's definitely what Dr. Freeman taught the people.

00:19:58And that's what I learned,

00:20:00you know, obviously early in my life,

00:20:02that's the way I saw things.

00:20:04So I wonder, John, if we can play a clip.

00:20:07It doesn't really relate yet

00:20:08to former rain, latter rain,

00:20:10but what it does relate to

00:20:13is this whole idea of imminency and urgency.

00:20:20And it just put the people

00:20:22in the state of mind

00:20:25where they were no longer

00:20:26in touch with reality.

00:20:29And it's, Jesus is coming again.

00:20:32There are, you know,

00:20:33dozens of predictions of the second advent

00:20:36and we should happily

00:20:38and willingly be able to talk about it

00:20:41and discuss it

00:20:43and study it

00:20:45and pray for it.

00:20:48But it doesn't mean

00:20:50that we can know

00:20:51with any certainty

00:20:53that he's coming back

00:20:54during our lifetime.

00:20:56So in a message

00:20:58during his study

00:21:00of the book of Romans,

00:21:01and we're going to,

00:21:02we're going to actually need this message,

00:21:04not this clip in it,

00:21:06but this one we'll use later on

00:21:07because it was taught in 1975.

00:21:11It was when he got to chapter eight,

00:21:15which talks about

00:21:16the manifestation of the sons of God.

00:21:19That is something you and I still

00:21:20will talk about in the future

00:21:22regarding Hobart's views on that.

00:21:24They are simply incredible

00:21:26and incredibly unscriptural.

00:21:29But, because he would always say,

00:21:31don't be afraid of the manifestation

00:21:33of the sons of God.

00:21:34The Bible teaches it.

00:21:36And, you know,

00:21:36that was just another way.

00:21:38Yeah, the Bible does use that terminology.

00:21:42I just,

00:21:43I know all of these teachers

00:21:45just have a way

00:21:45of using biblical terminology,

00:21:47but using it out of context.

00:21:51So in any event,

00:21:52in part one

00:21:54of preparation for manifestation,

00:21:57let me just set the scene.

00:21:59It's from the 31 minute,

00:22:0120 second timestamp

00:22:03to 33 minutes and 46 seconds.

00:22:05But what he's talking about

00:22:09are just the trials,

00:22:12small trials

00:22:13that everybody goes through.

00:22:14And he's kind of leading up

00:22:16to saying,

00:22:18don't be complaining

00:22:20about these little small things.

00:22:23Some of you are getting upset

00:22:24over these small things

00:22:25because God has big things

00:22:27in store for us.

00:22:29So we'll start with 31 minute

00:22:31and 22 second mark.

00:22:33Some people are still crying

00:22:35that there isn't enough seats

00:22:37or not enough room

00:22:37in the nursery

00:22:38or not enough air conditioning

00:22:40or whatever.

00:22:41Well, I could hope

00:22:42we have all this,

00:22:43but the point is

00:22:44don't let the devil defeat you

00:22:45because

00:22:48of some little physical thing

00:22:50about you had to stand

00:22:51an hour to get in

00:22:51to get a seat.

00:22:53As I said before,

00:22:54God may be separating

00:22:56the men from the boys

00:22:57just by that.

00:22:58I don't know

00:22:59what the answer is.

00:23:00I know we need more space

00:23:01and when God provides it,

00:23:03we'll have it.

00:23:04But there can be other things

00:23:06you don't understand about

00:23:07that maybe this way

00:23:09he's dealing with us

00:23:10may have an answer to that.

00:23:13He just,

00:23:13you never know.

00:23:15Six months from now,

00:23:16you may not be allowed

00:23:17to meet here.

00:23:18When are these things

00:23:20going to happen

00:23:21that we've talked about

00:23:22for years?

00:23:22They can't just all of a sudden,

00:23:24or they can't happen out there

00:23:2650 years after you've gone.

00:23:29Persecutions and ministries.

00:23:31God may catch

00:23:32a third of you away

00:23:33somewhere to minister.

00:23:34I mean literally

00:23:35just transport you.

00:23:36So we won't need

00:23:37all those seats.

00:23:43Or he could catch me away

00:23:45to ministry

00:23:46which he's shown

00:23:47in vision and prophecy

00:23:48and it's just,

00:23:50I don't know where it is

00:23:51or when it is.

00:23:52Maybe that's what

00:23:53that staring in my spirit's about.

00:23:54Maybe there are reasons

00:23:56we won't need

00:23:57as many seats

00:23:58as we didn't need.

00:23:58I don't know the answers

00:24:00to these things

00:24:00but I've learned one thing,

00:24:02not to be pressured

00:24:03by men,

00:24:04well meaning people,

00:24:05let's do something,

00:24:06we've got to do something,

00:24:07we've got to do this.

00:24:08If you can show me

00:24:09what to do

00:24:09or if you know what to do,

00:24:11go ahead and do it.

00:24:14I said before,

00:24:15if they want to put

00:24:15a $100,000 building out there,

00:24:17go ahead,

00:24:17have the faith for it.

00:24:18I don't.

00:24:19I don't see that of the Lord.

00:24:21If there's another place to go,

00:24:22I'd be there.

00:24:23I don't know where it is.

00:24:24If it is.

00:24:25Because I've certainly

00:24:26held it before the Lord.

00:24:27And I know when he's

00:24:28talking to me

00:24:29and I know when he's

00:24:30purposely being silent.

00:24:31He hasn't said a word

00:24:32for a couple of years

00:24:33about that.

00:24:34I mean about that.

00:24:40Because I've certainly

00:24:41sought his mind on it.

00:24:43But there just may be things

00:24:45we don't know about,

00:24:46you see.

00:24:46And you have to learn,

00:24:48friends,

00:24:48that the way God deals

00:24:50with you

00:24:50may not be the way

00:24:51he deals with me.

00:24:52God may want

00:24:53Oral Roberts

00:24:54to say on television

00:24:55every Sunday,

00:24:56but that doesn't mean

00:24:56he wants me

00:24:57on television every Sunday.

00:24:59In the future,

00:25:00John,

00:25:00we're going to play

00:25:01the very beginning

00:25:02of that message

00:25:03when it's really interesting.

00:25:05But this is,

00:25:06you know,

00:25:06halfway through

00:25:08this sermon of his,

00:25:09Preparation for Manifestation.

00:25:11It was taught in 1975.

00:25:13Let me just give

00:25:14the context of that.

00:25:15They moved into

00:25:16the Glory Barn

00:25:17in the fall of 1972

00:25:19and moved out

00:25:21just because they

00:25:23had outgrown it

00:25:24in the spring of 78.

00:25:26This message is 1975.

00:25:29So this is right

00:25:30in the middle

00:25:31of that time period,

00:25:33of the six-year time period

00:25:35they spent in the Glory Barn.

00:25:37And by the mid-70s,

00:25:40things had just exploded there.

00:25:42When they moved in early on,

00:25:44they had a couple

00:25:45of hundred members.

00:25:46By 75,

00:25:47they probably have

00:25:48five, six hundred members,

00:25:50maybe 700 members,

00:25:51maybe even more.

00:25:52They're meeting upstairs,

00:25:54downstairs.

00:25:54As you heard in the clip,

00:25:57people are standing in line

00:25:59for hours

00:26:00to walk up the steps

00:26:02to get to the second floor.

00:26:03That's where the main

00:26:04meeting hall was

00:26:05and where the pulpit was

00:26:07and where Hobart spoke.

00:26:11The clip also said,

00:26:12you know,

00:26:13there's not enough seating.

00:26:14Some people are

00:26:15complaining about that,

00:26:16complaining about

00:26:17getting here too early,

00:26:19complaining about

00:26:20not enough AC.

00:26:22But here's the thing

00:26:23that I want to highlight

00:26:25in that particular clip.

00:26:28He's trying to explain

00:26:29how we don't know

00:26:30how and why and when

00:26:32God's doing the things

00:26:33that he's doing.

00:26:34And he says in the middle

00:26:35of that clip,

00:26:37maybe God is going

00:26:39to catch away.

00:26:40And he means literally bodily

00:26:42like Philip

00:26:43in the book of Acts.

00:26:45God's going to catch away

00:26:46a third of you people

00:26:48and take you to other parts

00:26:49of the world to minister.

00:26:51And he said,

00:26:51because when is this

00:26:52great end time ministry

00:26:54going to break forth

00:26:55like we're always

00:26:56preaching about

00:26:58and believing for?

00:27:00He said,

00:27:01maybe that's why

00:27:03we have grown so big.

00:27:05God's going to solve

00:27:07the problem

00:27:08of overcapacity

00:27:10by catching away

00:27:12a third of the congregation.

00:27:14And I'm telling you,

00:27:16John,

00:27:16they literally believed

00:27:17that that was

00:27:18a viable possibility.

00:27:21You know,

00:27:22we are 50 years from then.

00:27:25Did that ever happen?

00:27:26No.

00:27:27None of them

00:27:28were caught away,

00:27:29let alone a third of them.

00:27:31And then he goes on

00:27:33to say that that's been

00:27:34shown in vision

00:27:35and prophecy

00:27:36to God's saints

00:27:37all over the world

00:27:38that this is,

00:27:40you know,

00:27:40the going to be

00:27:41the manifestation

00:27:42of the sons of God

00:27:44and he's going to

00:27:44catch us away.

00:27:45And he said,

00:27:46and he's going to

00:27:47catch me away

00:27:48because that's been shown.

00:27:49That never happened.

00:27:51You know,

00:27:51he died

00:27:52and they put him

00:27:53in a pine box

00:27:54and buried him.

00:27:55And he also talks about

00:27:58because it's the crunch

00:27:59of the people there

00:28:00about needing

00:28:01a new building.

00:28:03And he said,

00:28:05you know,

00:28:06if you,

00:28:07if you have the faith

00:28:09for a hundred thousand

00:28:10dollar new building,

00:28:12you know,

00:28:12go ahead.

00:28:13He said,

00:28:13I don't have the faith

00:28:14for that.

00:28:15And he said,

00:28:16I don't believe

00:28:16that's God's will.

00:28:18What is so interesting

00:28:19is that two years later,

00:28:21they're building

00:28:22their hundred,

00:28:23two hundred thousand

00:28:24dollar building.

00:28:24So I don't know

00:28:25where that idea went

00:28:27that he didn't have

00:28:28the faith for it

00:28:29and it wasn't God's will

00:28:30because that's exactly

00:28:32what they found out

00:28:33in their mind

00:28:34was God's will.

00:28:35And they went on

00:28:36to put up a new building.

00:28:37But the main thing

00:28:38I wanted to show

00:28:39in that clip

00:28:39was this hyper sense

00:28:42of supernaturalism.

00:28:44Don't worry about

00:28:45being overcrowded here

00:28:47because maybe next Sunday

00:28:49when we all show up

00:28:50just like that,

00:28:52God will catch away

00:28:53a third of you

00:28:54and send you

00:28:54to far places

00:28:55of the world

00:28:56so that you can minister.

00:30:37and I give them a ball.

00:30:38So you've got two families,

00:30:39both of which

00:30:40got the same gift.

00:30:42But say the one family

00:30:44says,

00:30:45look,

00:30:46I'm special

00:30:46because he gave me

00:30:47that ball.

00:30:48Knowing that the ball

00:30:49was given to all

00:30:50of these other people.

00:30:51I've given,

00:30:52I can't tell you

00:30:52how many gifts

00:30:53I've given to people.

00:30:55That's kind of

00:30:56what has happened here.

00:30:57I did this podcast

00:30:58recently on

00:30:59who owns the revival

00:31:00because when Pentecostalism

00:31:02emerged,

00:31:02they started to say

00:31:03that we're it.

00:31:04We have the revival.

00:31:05But the revival

00:31:06had been going on.

00:31:07You can go decades

00:31:09back in the past,

00:31:10go back to the Wesleyans.

00:31:11I mean,

00:31:11you can go all the way

00:31:13back as far as you go.

00:31:14They all claim,

00:31:15I got the ball.

00:31:17God gave me the ball.

00:31:18All you other Christians

00:31:19don't have the ball.

00:31:20And the question

00:31:22just formed in my head

00:31:23one day,

00:31:23well,

00:31:24who really owns the ball?

00:31:25Who's the one

00:31:25who can say

00:31:26God shows us

00:31:28as the elite,

00:31:29the special ones?

00:31:30Pentecostalism for me,

00:31:31I know people think

00:31:32that I'm making this comment

00:31:33against Pentecostalism.

00:31:35It isn't that.

00:31:36It's just that the mindset,

00:31:38people need to realize

00:31:39that there are

00:31:40other Christians out there.

00:31:42And whenever you try

00:31:43to make it such

00:31:44that we're the only ones,

00:31:45we've given the special doctrines,

00:31:46we have the special gifts,

00:31:48et cetera.

00:31:48When you recognize

00:31:49that those gifts

00:31:50actually existed

00:31:51in other places too,

00:31:53it's not really that special.

00:31:54You're just in a situation

00:31:57where the Father loves you

00:31:59and everybody else.

00:32:00You can't claim exclusivity.

00:32:02The problem,

00:32:03as it continued to develop,

00:32:05however,

00:32:05is they did.

00:32:06And as it goes through

00:32:08this Moses model,

00:32:09well,

00:32:09if you think of

00:32:10the Moses model,

00:32:11Moses is the one

00:32:12who led God's children out,

00:32:13he was the big figure

00:32:15back then,

00:32:16back in the Old Testament.

00:32:18So if you look at it

00:32:18in that type of model,

00:32:20this creates a problem

00:32:22because you're now

00:32:23more exclusive.

00:32:25Tie that to

00:32:26the British Israel doctrine

00:32:27where you're trying

00:32:28to say that

00:32:29these blessings

00:32:30from these Old Covenant passages

00:32:32belong to us

00:32:34as a group collectively.

00:32:36And all the other Christians

00:32:37who don't have

00:32:38what we have,

00:32:38they don't get

00:32:39those same blessings.

00:32:40That's really the problem

00:32:41because you've drawn

00:32:42this line in the sand

00:32:43that says,

00:32:44God who gave us the ball,

00:32:46even though he gave

00:32:47all these other people

00:32:47the ball,

00:32:48he doesn't love them

00:32:49as much.

00:32:50And you know where

00:32:51Hobart ended up?

00:32:52He was the only one

00:32:53who had the whole ball,

00:32:54John.

00:32:55I mean,

00:32:55I don't know that

00:32:56most people end up there.

00:32:58I doubt Chuck Smith

00:32:59felt that he was

00:32:59the only one

00:33:00who had the message.

00:33:01Hobart took it

00:33:02to its logical conclusion,

00:33:04God loves me and us

00:33:05so much

00:33:06that I am the only one

00:33:09to whom he has given

00:33:10the full end-time

00:33:12message of faith,

00:33:13whatever that is.

00:33:14That's what he always called it,

00:33:16the end-time message of faith.

00:33:18He was the only one

00:33:19who had been given that.

00:33:21And you're so right,

00:33:23John,

00:33:23that we've all

00:33:24received things from God

00:33:25and anything

00:33:26that is a true gift

00:33:27from God,

00:33:28which we have all received,

00:33:32it should humble us.

00:33:33It should not make us proud.

00:33:35We should be so thankful

00:33:37that we have

00:33:38anything from God.

00:33:40And you're so right.

00:33:41Every movement

00:33:42thinks that

00:33:43they are it

00:33:44to the exclusion

00:33:46or if not exclusion

00:33:48to the

00:33:49relegating

00:33:50to the

00:33:51background

00:33:52any other people

00:33:53around them

00:33:54or any other people

00:33:55for them.

00:33:56So let's come,

00:33:57John,

00:33:58with the time

00:33:58we have left

00:33:59and talk about

00:34:00this subject of rain,

00:34:01the former

00:34:02and the latter rain.

00:34:04Maybe one thing

00:34:06I better clear up

00:34:07in the beginning

00:34:07and this is going to

00:34:09be elementary

00:34:10probably for

00:34:1099% of the people

00:34:13but believe it or not

00:34:14I've actually seen

00:34:15brochures

00:34:16and sermon titles

00:34:18and things printed up

00:34:19where

00:34:20this is a little humorous

00:34:22where when people

00:34:23heard

00:34:23the latter rain

00:34:25they thought

00:34:26it was

00:34:27R-E-I-G-N

00:34:29that kind of rain.

00:34:31And I guess

00:34:32in one sense

00:34:34it kind of could be

00:34:35that's not what

00:34:36we're talking about

00:34:37but

00:34:38I have actually

00:34:39seen people

00:34:40talk about

00:34:40they're part of

00:34:41the latter rain

00:34:42R-E-I-G-N

00:34:44so they're probably

00:34:45talking about

00:34:46how you know

00:34:46we're going to

00:34:47rule the earth

00:34:47or control the earth

00:34:48so rain

00:34:49in that sense

00:34:50but that's not

00:34:51what most of us

00:34:52mean when we talk

00:34:53about the former

00:34:54and latter rain

00:34:55it is R-A-I-N

00:34:57as in moisture

00:34:58and

00:35:00look

00:35:01we need to

00:35:01start

00:35:02by saying

00:35:03that

00:35:03imagery

00:35:04related to

00:35:06rain

00:35:07or

00:35:07water

00:35:08especially

00:35:09running

00:35:10water

00:35:10versus

00:35:11a

00:35:11you know

00:35:12pond

00:35:12or a pool

00:35:13of water

00:35:13that can tend

00:35:14to be stagnant

00:35:15but

00:35:16imagery

00:35:17related to

00:35:17those things

00:35:18is definitely

00:35:19used of the

00:35:19Holy Spirit

00:35:20in the Bible

00:35:21it's used

00:35:22in the Old Testament

00:35:23it's used

00:35:23in the New Testament

00:35:24and

00:35:25that shouldn't

00:35:26be a surprise

00:35:27that

00:35:27that is

00:35:28a natural

00:35:29symbol

00:35:30or a natural

00:35:31connection

00:35:32because of

00:35:33the fact

00:35:33that when

00:35:35we read

00:35:36the Day of

00:35:36Pentecost

00:35:37experience

00:35:38the Holy Spirit

00:35:39was what

00:35:40poured out

00:35:41so

00:35:42to use

00:35:43imagery

00:35:43of rain

00:35:44would not

00:35:45be unbiblical

00:35:46and not be

00:35:47out of the

00:35:47ordinary

00:35:48at all

00:35:48so for instance

00:35:50Isaiah 44

00:35:513

00:35:52mentions

00:35:52God

00:35:54pouring

00:35:54his blessing

00:35:55on his

00:35:55people

00:35:56and the

00:35:57rest of

00:35:57the verse

00:35:58says

00:36:00so you

00:36:01can see

00:36:02out of
