00:21There's one weekend that's been circled on every calendar among our Speed Channel Formula 1 staff,
00:26and it is this one as the awesome Spa-Francorchamps circuit returns to Formula 1 after a year's absence.
00:32Welcome to live coverage of Friday practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.
00:37Hello, everybody. I'm Bob Varsha alongside David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:41You see the cars are on track for the second 60-minute free practice session of the day.
00:46There was one earlier.
00:50And let's get to the highlights of that first 60-minute practice.
00:53Of course, there's nothing more important than your home Grand Prix.
00:57And Baz Lienders, even though he is just the Friday test driver for the Minardi team,
01:01is the darling of the crowd today.
01:03It was a big day for third drivers.
01:05This is young Australian Ryan Briscoe with the Toyota team,
01:08who wound up 10th fastest in the session.
01:10David?
01:11And Bjorn Verdeheim, the Swedish driver, driving the Jag.
01:13He's a Friday driver as well.
01:15He seconded at this state, but ended up fourth on the day, which is pretty good.
01:18And Anthony Davidson, the B.A.R. test driver, who everybody's expecting great things of in the future,
01:23set the quickest lap at this point and stayed quickest throughout the session.
01:26And then Antonio Pisonio in the FW26, standing in for the still-injured Ralf Schumacher.
01:32He would finish ninth on the session, despite being first at that point.
01:36And then look at this.
01:36Giorgio Pantano in the Jordan.
01:38Gets it all wrong.
01:39Locks up on the brake and at Le Source, the tight hairpin.
01:42Gets absolutely no assistance at all to get the car off the track by the quarter-martials.
01:48But nevertheless, despite all that, he would be the quickest Jordan driver of that session.
01:52I think that's a regulation.
01:53There's also the matter of this guy, Michael Schumacher and his Ferrari.
01:57On his first hot lap, he was 1.59 seconds quicker than anybody,
02:02but wound up second on the day to Davidson.
02:04And Jolt Baumgartner and the other Minardi tried to duplicate Giorgio Pantano's performance
02:09on a track that, as you can see, was damp in patches.
02:12But he failed miserably and was actually able to make the corner at Le Source.
02:16And speaking of Bas Lienders, there he is going around.
02:20I believe that's Fernando Alonso in the Renault.
02:22The circuit is fabulous.
02:24Take it in.
02:26As we look at the times from this morning's first session,
02:29Anthony Davidson continues his climb up everybody's short list
02:32of a great rookie for the series next year.
02:36Those times, 1.45 that he did, is just under 150 mile an hour average.
02:43And that, of course, is including that hairpin that we saw, the La Source,
02:47which is either the first or the second slowest turn in Formula 1 racing.
02:52Only the Grand Hotel hairpin at Monte Carlo being probably a hair slower.
02:58I think it is a little bit slower, Dave.
02:59I think this one here, La Source hairpin, down to around 35 miles an hour.
03:04And remember that one at Monaco, they have to actually alter the steering angles on the car
03:08to put blocks in, so to allow them to get around the corner there.
03:12This is Pujol.
03:14Fabulous corner.
03:15Riding with Lienders.
03:27Stavolo, the bottom of the hill.
03:34Coming up right here is where the track rejoins what was once public roads
03:40that made up the circuit when it was 9.2 miles long.
03:44Here comes Blanchemont.
03:49Now here's the newly revised bus stop.
03:52Drivers jink more to the right than they used to, then back to the left.
03:55It has not been accepted with universal praise.
03:59When Pablo Montoya called the change to the bus stop chicane a joke.
04:03They've also resurfaced about half of this 4.2 mile circuit.
04:07And that's kept the engineers busy trying to work out the setups.
04:12Yeah, they certainly are having their work cut out for them this weekend.
04:15Remember, no race here last year, so their data is two years old.
04:19And think of the developments that's happening in tire compound and construction.
04:25We should expect to see lap times, guys, tumble from two years ago.
04:29There's a former pole sitter for the Belgian Grand Prix.
04:32He won Pablo Montoya in the BMW Williams.
04:35There's Jenson Button, who in addition to all of his problems having contracts to race
04:40for two different teams next year, became a star of the British tabloids about a week ago.
04:47Apparently he had quite the night with a group of exotic dancers in a London emporium
04:53of higher levels of cultural fascination.
04:57There's no sort of way of saying strip joint, really, is there?
05:00Well, I suppose not.
05:02I like your way better.
05:04The joint du strip, as it would be in Belgium.
05:08Well, I tell you, I am just thrilled that this race is underway again.
05:13To me, I'm sure you guys think exactly the same.
05:16Spa, Frankechamps, it must be amongst the classic circuits all-time throughout the world.
05:21For me, Monza and Spa, and we've got them back-to-back right here.
05:24Yep, absolutely.
05:26And, of course, this is the corner.
05:28Yeah.
05:28Eau Rouge has now been sort of neutered down.
05:32There's lots of run-off area.
05:33Boy, look at the speed they come over the top there through Radion.
05:35Well, now you've got all that run-off on the left there, left of the picture, that is.
05:39Used to be a little bit of guardrail and a big drop down the hill.
05:43The old Jordan wagging his tail there, going up the hill.
05:45That was Giorgio Pantano, who's raced here in Formula 3000.
05:49In fact, won here in Formula 3000, setting down the likes of Sebastian Bourdais.
05:54Now looking more and more like this year's champ car champion.
05:57Back in 2002, the engineers were saying that, and the drivers were reporting back, and telemetry
06:03giving the same figures as well, that Eau Rouge is pretty much flat out back in 2002.
06:08Now all the engineers are saying, yes, they should be flat out through Eau Rouge.
06:13Was 177 miles an hour through Eau Rouge.
06:15Now 192 miles an hour through there, flat out, with no lift whatsoever.
06:21And remember, because of the aerodynamic changes, guys, for next year and the regulations,
06:24enjoy this spectacle, because this will be the fastest we'll see the cars go through Eau Rouge for a long
06:30while.
06:30Well, here comes Rubens Barrichello.
06:33Juan Pablo Montoya, as you see, is on a hot lap.
06:35That stream of brown dust-looking material that you saw as Giorgio Pantano went through Eau Rouge in slow motion
06:41was actually the underbody plank being worn away as the car is crushed to the ground.
06:47When we get an onboard view of a driver through there, and hopefully it'll be soon from our host broadcasters
06:51in Belgium,
06:52you'll hear the revs go down, even though the driver has his foot planted.
06:56That's how strong the G-forces are, pulling the car down out of the racetrack in Eau Rouge.
07:01This, of course, causes tremendous rolling resistance as the tires are squashed into the road.
07:07And the other thing it does, of course, it tends to throw the oil to the top of the engine.
07:11We saw Jensen Button and the BAR Honda go through there in top gear, seventh gear through Eau Rouge.
07:18Who'd have thunk it?
07:19We'll take a quick break and return for more live from Belgium.
07:24Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by BMW.
07:30BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
07:34There she is over there.
07:3772, 73, something like that.
07:39She's got some of that dust out there.
07:42Susan's driving that car.
07:44I think she...
07:46The Formula One Belgian Grand Prix track map is brought to you by Porsche.
07:50Porsche, there is no substitute.
07:56Welcome back to a classic road racing circuit.
07:59Spa-Francorchamps, side of round 14 of the Formula One World Championship for 2004.
08:04I'm Bob Harsha with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs.
08:07This is Rubens Barichello in the Ferrari.
08:09You see how he compares through the second of three intermediates to current leader of the session, Kimi Räikkönen in
08:15the McLaren.
08:18Räikkönen bumped Felipe Massa and Toyota's Friday driver, Ryan Briscoe, just a few moments ago.
08:30Swinging on to the front straightaway.
08:37Oh, just eight.
08:38Not a good third sector for the Ferrari driver from Brazil.
08:43Anthony Davidson's going very fast.
08:44The first two sectors were the quickest of the session so far.
08:47So if he can maintain that through the bus stop, he'll be P1.
08:51This looks good.
08:54There you go.
08:55By 1.16.
08:58Man, this guy is looking better and better with each race weekend.
09:02Now, as Davidson sets off down the hill toward O'Rouge, let's take a look at the Porsche track map
09:08with David Hobbs.
09:09Well, this is some track, as we've said already.
09:1120 curves, 4.3 miles long, through La Source, downhill to O'Rouge, and right at the bottom there,
09:18you sharp upward surge to the cars there.
09:21You've got tremendous gravitational downforce on the cars you go through O'Rouge and Radion.
09:25A long climb up the Kemmel Strayway to Lacombe, which is a right-left complex.
09:29Malbody, down to Rivage.
09:31Rivage, a tricky little corner, because it's very downhill, bad for understeer.
09:34Turn 9 is also a lot of understeer.
09:36Then Pouhon.
09:37Now, this is a real attachment corner.
09:39Very fast entry and an even faster exit.
09:42Down to Fania, another right-left complex.
09:45Down to Stavlo, bottom of the hill.
09:47Then all the way up through Blanchement.
09:48Blanchement, very, very fast left-hander.
09:51Didn't use to be any runoff at all.
09:52Down is plenty of runoff.
09:56In the lead-up to this weekend's racing, we were discussing some of the great accidents
10:01at Spa-Francorchamps.
10:02To be honest, I can't think of a small accident that's ever happened here.
10:07Luciano Berti there at Blanchement, or that big start line wreck back in 98.
10:13This is a dangerous place, although a lot of work has been done.
10:18And the place looks fabulous and is safer than it's ever been.
10:22This is Blanchement, where Berti went off.
10:24Flat-out left-hander.
10:26The guardrail used to be where that red and white checker is.
10:28Now, right there, you just saw the transition from the old tarmac to the new tarmac right here around the
10:33footstop.
10:34And that is a big transition point, guys.
10:36You'll see, when you see the onboard shots of the car taking just over the undulation, there is a lot
10:42of flank dust.
10:44It's a big, very prominent step in the tarmac.
10:47The drivers will be complaining about that, I'm sure.
10:49There are a couple of bumpy sections.
10:52Look at the crowd.
10:54Anthony Davidson actually set the fastest sector time, first sector time of the session at a 29.3.
11:00But still came up 9 tenths short.
11:02Here comes Michael Schumacher.
11:05If you believe in numerology, this is more than ever Schumacher's weekend.
11:09Yes, he's won 12 of the 13 races thus far this year, but this weekend, he could pick up his
11:15seventh victory at this track
11:17to win his seventh world championship in what is Ferrari's 700th Grand Prix start.
11:26Here the revs go down.
11:32This is the Kimmel straight.
11:40You know, you keep waiting for that engine explosion, and it just doesn't come, does it?
11:45And it keeps picking up revs, even though that's an uphill straightaway.
11:50This is that RIVAGE, this downhill right-handle.
11:52Just look how the road falls away.
11:54Very difficult to get the car set up for that one.
11:56This is an important one here.
11:58This leads down to Poole on very fast run down this steep hill.
12:03There's that new asphalt.
12:04Oh, you needed to stay on board for this.
12:10Now, down towards Fanyas.
12:15This part of the track added in 1983 to bring Spa-Francorchamps back into the world championship.
12:21The loop used to be 9.2 miles long, and included the dreaded master kink.
12:30It just sends a tingle down the spine, doesn't it, looking at the train.
12:33Oh, yeah.
12:34It's just fantastic.
12:36It's a great sense of going somewhere.
12:42There's that transition point I was talking about.
12:45Very bumpy.
12:46Oh, whoops.
12:48Note to self.
12:50That'll get him a few harsh words from his driving instructor.
12:53Breaking point back one meter.
13:00After that little sort of slight diversion through the chicane there, or the bus stop.
13:06A couple of seconds slower than Davison.
13:07Don't forget, Friday, doing a lot of data acquisition today.
13:11Tire wear, fuel consumption, and all those other things they've got to get right for Sunday.
13:17Because tomorrow is about setting the car up for qualifying.
13:20There it is again.
13:21Yeah, you're right, David, and we were looking at the pictures coming off the world feed in the first practice
13:25session.
13:25The Michelin runners have obviously got a very soft compound tire here that they were using,
13:30and a lot of blistering going off on that left front within a couple of laps of use.
13:34I think Michelin have probably just gone a step too far on that soft compound.
13:39They'll probably find their drivers will have to use the harder compound tire, we'll see.
13:44Whoa.
13:46Briscoe.
13:46Well, left front suspension damage.
13:48Oh, the cord is missing.
13:49That'll do it.
13:49And at the rear.
13:50Wow, this has been a...
13:51Bob, what you were just saying there, there ain't no small accidents.
13:55That's coming out of the...
13:56Oh, look at that.
13:57Is that coming out of Lussell?
13:58I think it is.
13:59Directly across from the pit out.
14:02Red flag will stop the session.
14:05See if the young Australian is okay.
14:07There are the parts making their way back to the pits.
14:10Boy, if they set off down that hill, they're going to go for about a mile.
14:13That thing is going to roll forever, yeah.
14:14Three quarters of a mile down to O'Rouge.
14:18And in the old motorsports tradition, let's give a round of applause and a wave to the crowd.
14:22I see a lot of liquid on the floor.
14:24I hope that that is water coming out, but it's not steaming,
14:27which makes me...
14:29Well, I just hope...
14:30Well, I think he probably knocked...
14:31He may have knocked the water out of the tires.
14:33Remember, it rained this morning.
14:35There's a lot of water built up in that tire wall.
14:38Yeah, you're right, because it's flowing to the floor.
14:40Some coming out of the engine, some coming out of the car,
14:42and a lot of it's coming out of the wall itself.
14:47Wow.
14:47We're getting to see shirt sleeves around the racetrack.
14:49That's an improvement.
14:50It was very cool this morning when it rained.
14:53Ryan Briscoe, the Friday test driver, hoping...
14:56Oh, no, it wasn't at Lassau.
14:57Oh, it's O'Rouge.
14:59Ryan Briscoe, on the way into O'Rouge.
15:01That would explain why there's so much damage done.
15:03That would be a heck of a lick.
15:05Wow.
15:08And you definitely see, yeah, cooling fluid coming out.
15:14Man.
15:16Boy, that...
15:17The way that happened, it makes you wonder...
15:19...if something broke on the car going into O'Rouge,
15:21because there's actually no reason to lose it where he lost it.
15:24Boy, joining Alex Zanardi, Jacques Villeneuve, Ricardo Zonta,
15:28some of the great shunts.
15:31And apparently, the powers that be, the FIA is taking a hard look
15:35at doing away with carbon fiber suspension bits
15:39in order to try to reduce the number of carbon fiber shards
15:43on the racetrack after accidents like this one.
15:45We're also talking about coating the carbon fiber portions of the car,
15:49such as the monocoque, in Kevlar to try to keep that material
15:53from getting on the racetrack and causing tire punctures,
15:55such as we saw at the U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis.
15:58Good idea.
16:00This looks like it'll have the track down for a while,
16:02so we'll take a quick break and return with more live coverage
16:06of Friday practice from Spa-Francorchamps.
16:08Stay with us.
16:12Welcome back live to Spa-Francorchamps
16:14and Friday practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.
16:16Here on Steve's channel, Bob Barsha, Steve Matchett, David Hobbs with you.
16:20There's Rubens Batacello,
16:22taking care of a little housekeeping down in the Ferrari garage.
16:25The session just resumed about a minute ago.
16:28No change on the timing sheets.
16:38Everybody keen to get back out on track.
16:41Of course, they've got a lot of work to do.
16:44Set at the top of the show because of the lack of the race from last year.
16:48These guys are basically two years behind in their data acquisition.
16:52I think the general impression is by the end of today's session,
16:55we'll all be back up to speed.
16:56They'll know what the car needs,
16:57and they'll know what the car doesn't need to make it work right,
16:59but they want to use every second of lap time, track time.
17:04It's the one thing in Formula One, despite whatever budget you've got,
17:07you cannot buy track time.
17:10Pablo Montoya right there was 12th in this morning's first 60-minute session.
17:16And now he's got Anthony Davidson,
17:18the session leader, trying to get by in the BAR.
17:22Yeah, he called him up big time.
17:25I'm surprised they're not going quicker than they are already
17:27because everywhere else we've been this year,
17:29they're two and three seconds quicker on short circuits,
17:32much shorter than they were last year.
17:35It's only two years since we were here.
17:36I thought these folks would be down in about the 140 range by now.
17:39By tomorrow, they may well be.
17:41Of course, today is all about fuel loads and tyre selection.
17:44I was talking to the Renault engineers about this the other day
17:47and before the teams left the spa,
17:50and they were saying we expect to be actually about three seconds quicker
17:54than we were, which you would expect.
17:56Probably that's not the drop in lap time you would expect around here
18:00over two years.
18:02The bus stop seems to have slowed the cars by about a second from what it was,
18:07so you've got to factor that in.
18:08So that would give you four seconds.
18:10You take that one second out, you're down three.
18:12There it is, right there.
18:13Oh, Rouge.
18:16No difficulty with getting back up to speed.
18:18Didn't lose many reps there, did he?
18:20No.
18:22Up to Leigh-Cole.
18:23That's the intermediate time.
18:25This guy looks like the real deal.
18:32Ooh, going wide there at Marmodee.
18:35There's that left front tyre again.
18:36There's that left front tyre he always going there.
18:37Yeah, that dark strip.
18:39Yeah.
18:40Which could be blisters.
18:42We saw that all through the first session,
18:45and it was always down RIVAGE, down into Pujon.
18:48That section there where they really lean over on the left side of the tyre,
18:52and again, David, as you say,
18:53because the track drops away,
18:54the camera angle drops away,
18:56and that run down from Marmodee to RIVAGE,
18:58it puts such a high lateral load in onto that left front,
19:01and there was really chunks being ripped off the tyre there in the first session.
19:07They must have had a slightly harder compound, I'd imagine.
19:11We do know that that wonderful Bridgestone tyre that was developed for Ferrari
19:17at the Hungarian race will not be used here.
19:21He was talking to Ross Braun again in the lead-up to the race.
19:24He was saying they just haven't had,
19:25because of the testing ban over the summer period,
19:28they haven't been able to test that new construction Bridgestone tyre
19:31at a fast track,
19:32and therefore they feel it would be prudent not to use it.
19:35There is a Monza test after this race,
19:37and of course the following race is Monza,
19:39so there's a possibility that that new construction Bridgestone
19:42would be back on board for Monza,
19:43but not around here.
19:45The big news from that test will no doubt be the fact that
19:47Ralph Schumacher,
19:48injured in a heavy crash at the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis back in June,
19:53is going to get back into the BMW Williams
19:55to see if he can go the rest of the season.
19:58I think the over-under on that favours he will not,
20:01but we shall see.
20:04It's getting to the point of the season now,
20:06if I was a team manager at Williams,
20:08would I want to put Ralph Schumacher in the car at this point?
20:12I think probably not.
20:14I wouldn't want that driver that's going to another team
20:15to be getting any sort of data or information
20:18about the possibility of how the new car is going to react
20:21or any new parts that are coming on board.
20:24Technical director Sam Michael at Williams
20:26put the opportunity to give a tweet to his other driver
20:29when he said that without Ralph in the car,
20:31we're not getting the kind of technical feedback,
20:34set-up decisions,
20:36entire selection advantage we had before.
20:38Juan Pablo doesn't give that to us,
20:40but then again,
20:41he's not expected to.
20:44Which, of course,
20:44is a complete load of baloney.
20:46I would rather expect my drivers being paid millions of dollars
20:49to give us some technical feedback.
20:51Well, it would be nice, wouldn't it?
20:52If they could give you some assistance along the road.
20:55Of course, Montoya's unlikely to be helping Williams too much,
20:58knowing he's going to McLaren.
21:00Obviously, Williams are unlikely to help Montoya too much,
21:02knowing he's going.
21:03They're not going to help Schumacher much,
21:04considering he's going to Toyota.
21:06So, you have a slightly odd situation here
21:08with everybody trying to win World Championship points
21:10and not trying to help each other too much at the same time.
21:13You've hit the nail right on the head there.
21:14I would say,
21:15this is what Ferrari's great strength is at the moment,
21:17is the consistency
21:18with the way the car is developing from year to year.
21:21They keep their staff on board
21:22and they've got the same drivers
21:24and they're still all committed to the same project.
21:26They're all going in the same direction.
21:27The likes of Williams and McLaren
21:29and even these guys swapping and changing,
21:31technical directors, drivers.
21:33Consistency is what wins races and championships.
21:36It was Jarno Trulli.
21:38Go ahead, David.
21:38I was going to say,
21:38Juan Pablo is not renowned for his great technical feedback,
21:43nor is Kimi Räikkönen,
21:44because both those guys are going to end up at McLaren next year,
21:47which obviously needs some technical feedback just at the moment.
21:50So, that's a big combo.
21:52Here's another team that's had an interesting break
21:54since the last race in Hungary.
21:56Jarno Trulli recently said
21:57the Renault team is favoring Fernando Alonso.
22:00Since I'm going elsewhere next year,
22:02they're not giving me the equipment I need.
22:04And statistically, if you look at his record
22:07since winning at Monaco this year,
22:09it has been very bleak.
22:11The team, of course, leapt to its feet
22:13to say that is not the case.
22:15His teammate, Fernando Alonso,
22:17after Hungary went on record as saying
22:19the Michelin tire wasn't very good.
22:21We need some help from them.
22:22He immediately got yanked on the sleeve
22:25by Pierre DuPasquier,
22:27who runs Michelin's racing programs.
22:31Well, Pierre gave him a real mouthful
22:34in the British Autosport.
22:36There's actually some expletage in there.
22:38I told him he didn't like the tires.
22:40The Bridgestone truck was over there.
22:42He better get his little butt over there,
22:44find some tires in there.
22:45So it looks like Renault is getting a taste
22:47of what life is like at Williams.
22:49The team is in disarray.
22:50The discipline is breaking down.
22:52Jenson Button goes to fast time of the session,
22:55bumping Anthony Davidson.
22:56Giancarlo Fisichella in the Sauber
22:58had bumped Antonio, excuse me,
23:00had bumped Kimi Raikkonen.
23:02Fisichella is now second.
23:03Antonio Pisonja is up to third.
23:05Bjarno truly up to fourth.
23:07And Raikkonen is now fifth.
23:09And Sato's about to go P1.
23:13Now, of course, there's another team
23:14with some dissension going on.
23:16Jenson Button obviously loathe to do much
23:18to help the team at this point.
23:20But on the other hand,
23:21with a bit of luck,
23:22and some really good results
23:23in the remaining five races,
23:25including this one,
23:26and he could come second
23:27in the World Championship.
23:29Gents.
23:30Gents could do it.
23:32Some interesting sports.
23:33And the Bayard could certainly come second
23:34in the Constructors.
23:35They're only nine points behind Renault.
23:43Well, a 1.45.
23:46Now we're still up to 150 yet.
23:49Ooh, eating all of that curb
23:50and then some.
23:51It's Takuma Sato.
23:54Fastest time of the session
23:55in the first and second intermediates.
23:58Sato leads teammate Button
24:00as BAR comes to the front.
24:04...to Spa,
24:05where Friday practice continues.
24:06The second of two one-hour sessions.
24:09There's one Pablo Montoya once again.
24:16Look at that wonderful Fania's section.
24:19I love that sort of sweeping left,
24:21right, flow of the track there.
24:24Montoya just 16th in the session,
24:26but he did just set the fast time
24:28in the first intermediate.
24:29This could be a very quick time for him.
24:36I haven't seen the second intermediate time yet.
24:41but the proof is about
24:43to hit the timing screens.
24:49Bang.
24:50P2.
24:52Comes the second driver
24:53into the 1.45
24:555-second zone after Sato.
24:58You know, I was just about to say,
24:59we saw the BMW Williams chassis,
25:01the FW26 running very softly sprung at the rear.
25:05And there was further evidence of that.
25:07You see how the car leans over to the left,
25:08and then the tungsten skids underneath the legality plank
25:13spark and throw those wonderful shards of tungsten into the air.
25:17But it looks very dramatic, doesn't it?
25:19Away from the tires, hopefully.
25:21You saw that left rear Michelin
25:22taking an absolute pound
25:24through Aroge.
25:26Just squirming.
25:29It's a very technical track, this.
25:31For the drivers,
25:32it's a great driver's track, of course.
25:34And for the engineers,
25:34it's a very fine balance.
25:37You look at a track,
25:37let's say, like Monaco
25:39or the Hungaro ring with aerodynamics,
25:41it's just a matter of cramming as much wing on as you can.
25:43Downforce, downforce, get it on the car.
25:45Here, you have to get it just right.
25:48You don't want as much downforce on the car
25:50that you're going to sacrifice
25:51that straight-line speed coming out of Aroge
25:53and that flat blast up to the top of the track at Malmedy.
25:57And yet, you've got to tweak the downforce just enough
25:59so that it works well around those in-field sections.
26:01You need a bit of aerodynamic help through Aroge,
26:03but as you say, if you have too much,
26:04it kills you in that long uphill straight.
26:07Right here.
26:08You don't want it on the car now.
26:09Ideally, you would turn the wings off at this point
26:14right up until about now
26:16and slam it back on again.
26:17And off.
26:19Home to the rules allowed for one of the young drivers.
26:21I think it might have been Felipe Massa
26:23said back in his days running in the Miner Series
26:25when he was using the other pit lane,
26:27which is located on the downhill run to Aroge,
26:30he went down to the corner to watch the cars come through.
26:33And in those days, Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger
26:35were teammates at McLaren.
26:37He says as they went through,
26:38you could tell Berger was flat out.
26:40Senna was not.
26:42Steve, when we talked about that this morning,
26:44you said you guessed that was because Berger
26:46had a whole lot more downforce on the car.
26:47Yeah, that would be my guess.
26:50That's exactly what we're talking about.
26:51You know, Berger would be able to take Aroge flat
26:54with the extra downforce,
26:55the kilos of aerodynamic pressure,
26:57pushing the car onto the track.
26:59And then would have sacrificed that,
27:00being able to dance with the steering
27:02and control the car
27:03and then optimize that straight line speed
27:05straight up the track
27:06and then round here at Blanchimont,
27:08that flat blast.
27:09That's the difference between Berger and Senna
27:11and their approach to setting the car up.
27:14Yeah, because from here on,
27:16Stavolo,
27:17now that was a good lap.
27:19That's through that,
27:20from Revise down to Pujon,
27:23through Pujon Fanyas
27:24and through Stavolo,
27:25that sector,
27:26so handling absolutely premium
27:28through that sector of the track.
27:29Power needed up here,
27:31uphill all the way through Blanchimont,
27:33uphill all the way through the bus stop.
27:35pretty steeply uphill too.
27:37And this is where the relationship
27:39between driver and engineer,
27:40I think around here,
27:41more than any other track,
27:43comes to the fore,
27:43because the engineer can say to the driver,
27:45you know,
27:46we can give you a little bit more downforce
27:47on the car,
27:48we can help you,
27:49as Räikkönen goes P1
27:50and by three quarters of a second.
27:52But then if the driver can say,
27:53you know guys,
27:54take the downforce off,
27:55I can hold it,
27:56I can hold it,
27:56my talent will hold it through the corner.
27:58You get that working together,
28:00partnership working well.
28:02Well,
28:02this is where Felipe Massa said,
28:04you really feel like a racing driver.
28:14That and the fact that the drivers
28:16are on full throttle
28:17for fully 65% of the lap,
28:19second only to Monza,
28:21in terms of engine braking full revs.
28:24It's about 22 seconds,
28:26right here,
28:27coming out the top of Eau Rouge,
28:28well actually into the bottom of Eau Rouge,
28:30right to the top of the track at Le Coon.
28:44Now,
28:44what's the track drop away?
28:48That's what's loading that left front end.
28:50Right there,
28:51look at it!
28:52We've got to get it back to the right here
28:53to get a good line through here.
28:55Let's see if they stay on through Coon Hall.
28:57But look at the condition of the Bridgestone tyres,
29:00how well they're holding up
29:02in relation,
29:03in comparison I should say,
29:05to the Michelin soft compound tyres we've seen.
29:08You want to use the soft compound tyre
29:10if you can get away with it,
29:11of course,
29:11because it generates more grip,
29:13but round here,
29:13it's such a long track
29:15that tyre degradation
29:16after about,
29:17I don't know,
29:17seven or eight laps at that pace
29:19will just destroy the things.
29:20Well,
29:21you've got some longish corners here too,
29:22it's really,
29:23you can get the old tyres heated up.
29:25Yeah.
29:27So through that crucial handling sector there,
29:29the Ferrari lost even more ground to right here.
29:35Bridgestone's technical manager,
29:36Hissau Suganuma,
29:38this week said
29:38they have made it a company goal
29:40to win out the rest of the season,
29:43presumably with this guy.
29:48And I think it was Juan Pablo Montoya himself
29:52who said,
29:53I think they can do that.
29:57Hard to argue against 12 wins
29:59and 13 starts this year.
30:00Right.
30:01Kimi Reikman leads to
30:02Kumisato and David Coulthard,
30:04the top three in the session,
30:06but down in the 144s at Spa.
30:08We'll be back.
30:21Welcome back.
30:22This is Yarno truly in the Renault.
30:24As the drivers continue to work on setups
30:27and tire selection,
30:28preparation for qualifying
30:30for the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix,
30:32which you'll see here on Speed Channel
30:33tomorrow, Saturday,
30:35beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern time.
30:39I remember the first time
30:41I came to this circuit
30:43back in the early 90s.
30:45Might have been 1989,
30:46come to think of it.
30:47Driving through this beautiful countryside,
30:49dotted with museums large and small
30:52to the great events of World War II
30:53and the Battle of the Bulls
30:54that took place here in the Ardenne Forest.
30:57You could be driving down
30:58this little two-lane country road.
30:59You stop at an intersection.
31:00All of a sudden, you look down
31:01and you see a racing curve across the way.
31:04And you turn down that road
31:06and all of a sudden,
31:07you see rubber on the opposite side of the road.
31:10Armco over there in the trees.
31:12And you realize
31:13you are at one of the great,
31:15true public road racing circuits in the world.
31:17Of course, since then,
31:20it's been totally privatized.
31:23And you can no longer drive the circuit at Spa.
31:26But you can get darn close to it.
31:28And you can drive the old sections
31:30beyond Lacombe,
31:31down through Masta,
31:32down to the village near Stavolo.
31:35Go through the old Bernville curve
31:37and down through,
31:38as you say,
31:39the Masta straight,
31:40the Masta kink,
31:41the old Stavolo.
31:43Where was it that you went off
31:44in those days
31:45and you told me about
31:46walking up to the farmhouse
31:47because nobody came over
31:48to check on your GT40?
31:50Well, it was the old GT40.
31:51The engine blew
31:52and I was just going up the hill
31:55before the current Stavolo.
31:57And there was a farmhouse on the right
31:59and I just drove in
32:00and sort of parked in their yard
32:02and went inside
32:03and they gave me
32:04a cup of tea or coffee
32:05and we watched the race on the telly
32:07in their house
32:08right by the side of the race track.
32:10Not terribly civilized.
32:11Not terribly civilized.
32:12Probably thought you were
32:13the Jehovah's Witnesses
32:14or something.
32:14My very first drive at Spa
32:17with the Essex Wire GT40
32:21with...
32:22Jochen Niepash.
32:25Was that a slow-mo of the Jordan?
32:26It was a full speed.
32:27Oh, okay.
32:29Hey, cut that out.
32:31Boy, oh boy.
32:33This was the scene
32:34of the greatest ever day
32:36for the Jordan squad
32:37when Ralph Schumacher
32:38and Damon Hill
32:39finished 2-1
32:41back in 1998.
32:44He's finally made it
32:46and everyone...
32:47Welcome back live.
32:48This is Rubens Botticello
32:49as Friday practice continues
32:51for the Belgian Grand Prix.
32:53See him working hard.
33:01Botticello currently 15th
33:02but he moves that up to 6th.
33:05Less than a second
33:06off of session leader
33:07Kimi Räikkönen.
33:08Now while we were away
33:09his teammate Michael Schumacher
33:11had an interesting moment.
33:12Let's take a look at that.
33:15Just going into the Stavolo complex.
33:18Basically a double right-hander
33:19but he made it a much sharper right-hander
33:21than it was.
33:21Look at that.
33:22No brakes
33:22until he realized
33:24he was rolling back at the track.
33:26Well, it didn't work that time
33:27so.
33:28Gives it another blast.
33:31That's something you don't see
33:32every day.
33:33Oh.
33:35You don't have to see
33:36how Schumacher faced the wrong way.
33:38That is the build-up.
33:39Those little marbles
33:40offline already
33:41in just two sessions.
33:43Remarkable, isn't it?
33:44Formula One practice.
33:45I think that's those
33:46Michelins, Bob,
33:47giving up.
33:48Those soft compound
33:48Michelins we're seeing
33:49the guys running.
33:51Bridgestones, of course,
33:52on Michael's car.
33:53Look how long
33:53he tried to save it.
33:55But notice
33:56very little lock-up.
33:57Little there at the front,
33:58little at the back,
33:59and then
33:59the wheels start turning again.
34:01I wonder if he saved that set.
34:04It's not that it really
34:05matters much at this point.
34:06Have to lock him up there
34:07to stuff himself back
34:08into that.
34:08Avoid the gravel, yeah.
34:10We've got a break coming up.
34:11Stand by for more
34:12live coverage
34:13of practice from Spa.
34:17Welcome back to Spa,
34:18where Friday practice continues.
34:19The second of two
34:20one-hour sessions.
34:24This is Giancarlo Fisichello
34:26running out the string
34:27with Sauber
34:28before moving to Renault
34:29in 2005.
34:32Mark Webber
34:33was the last car
34:34on track
34:34with less than
34:3530 minutes to go
34:36in the session.
34:37He is now 14th
34:39in the Jaguar.
34:43Antonio Pisonja
34:44just set fastest time
34:46of the session
34:46in the third
34:47intermediate sector.
34:48That's the one
34:48running up to start finish.
34:50And he has jumped
34:51up to sixth.
34:55Talked about
34:56the length of the track
34:57and how the gaps
34:58between cars
34:59can be huge.
35:01Anthony Davidson
35:02is currently third
35:03at a 145.43.
35:06Takumasato
35:0745.45.
35:08Michael Schumacher
35:0945.47.
35:11Pisonja
35:1245.5.
35:13Barrichello
35:1445.6.
35:15Alonso
35:1545.6.
35:18Oh, incredibly close
35:20considering
35:20the amount
35:21of corners,
35:23the distance
35:23around the track
35:24and the amount
35:24of gear shifting
35:25and braking
35:26that goes on
35:26around here.
35:27For them to be
35:27that close
35:28is staggering.
35:28The thing
35:29that always
35:30surprises me
35:30about how close
35:31the cars are
35:31is of course
35:32they're all
35:33different cars
35:34built in different
35:34factories
35:35by different
35:35engineers.
35:36All right,
35:36they're all
35:37built to the
35:37same F1
35:38regulations,
35:39the Formula 1
35:40regulations,
35:41of course,
35:41but the fact
35:41that they're all
35:42completely different
35:43constructors.
35:45I mean,
35:46you expect
35:47Nextel Cup cars
35:48to be close
35:48when they go
35:49around the
35:49two and a half
35:49mile over
35:50which is steeply
35:51banked and all
35:51the cars are
35:52very rigidly
35:52controlled by
35:53the rules and
35:53regulations.
35:54And that's
35:55oval track racing.
35:56But it's a
35:56one-geared,
35:57you know,
35:58plug.
35:59That's what gets
35:59up my nose
36:00when people talk
36:00about,
36:01oh, look how
36:01far apart they
36:02are in qualifying.
36:03I mean,
36:03make every team
36:04out there
36:04design and build
36:05their own car
36:07and then let's
36:08talk.
36:09Yeah.
36:10Well,
36:10and shift gear.
36:11God knows
36:12how many gears
36:12shift there are
36:13for a lap
36:13around here
36:14somewhere around
36:14about 35,
36:15I think.
36:16Well,
36:16some NASCAR
36:16teams do build
36:17their own cars
36:19but still within
36:20that very tight
36:22technical regulation.
36:27More and more
36:28we're seeing a
36:29Formula One
36:30or at least
36:30British technology
36:32incursion
36:32into NASCAR
36:33racing.
36:34We'll talk about
36:34that more this
36:35weekend.
36:36Right now we're
36:36going to take a
36:37break.
36:37Less than 10
36:38minutes to go
36:39in the second
36:39Friday practice
36:40at Spa-Frankershawn.
36:42We'll be right
36:42back.
36:53Now if we
36:54stop on board
36:55guys,
36:55watch that
36:56left front
36:56tyre as the
36:57car drops down
36:58round to
36:59Rivage and
37:00on towards
37:00Pouhon.
37:01Look at it
37:02now.
37:04There he's
37:05changed colour.
37:06Look at that
37:07undersea,
37:07a lot of
37:08undersea
37:08in that corner
37:08always is.
37:11that's how the
37:12black patch
37:12moves across
37:13the tyre.
37:19You're wondering
37:20why that patch
37:21seems to
37:21disappear on the
37:22straight sections
37:23of the track.
37:24It's really
37:24centrifugal load.
37:25Starts to just
37:26pull the tyre,
37:27pull the compound
37:28straight.
37:29It's basically
37:29trying to throw
37:30itself to pieces.
37:34going very fast
37:36but using
37:37significantly less
37:38road, I think,
37:39than Michael
37:40Schumacher.
37:43of course, if
37:44you think I'm
37:44wrong, I'm
37:44going to say
37:45that's that
37:45softer compound
37:46making the
37:46car grip
37:48better.
37:48Yeah, I
37:49think the
37:50Bridgestone, as
37:51you say,
37:52probably using
37:52a harder
37:52compound and
37:54I'm just
37:55guessing Michael
37:55Schumacher and
37:56Ferrari's
37:57engineers just
37:57asking the
37:58drivers to
37:58let the car
37:59run a little
38:00bit wider.
38:01You can't
38:01rely on the
38:02grip of the
38:02tyre, just
38:03let the
38:04tyre scrub a
38:05little more
38:05towards the
38:06outside of
38:06the track.
38:111.7 seconds
38:12off of his
38:13own session
38:15leading time.
38:16The McLaren
38:17team pointed
38:18directly at
38:19the tyres for
38:20their poor
38:20performance two
38:21weeks ago in
38:22Hungary.
38:25They said
38:25they chose
38:26the harder
38:26of the
38:27Michelin
38:27compounds and
38:28when the
38:28race day
38:29dawned cooler
38:30than what
38:30they expected
38:31they simply
38:32could not
38:33find grip.
38:35It's
38:35interesting to
38:36note, David,
38:37and this is
38:37something you
38:37pointed out just
38:38before we came
38:38on air, that
38:39Ferrari, you
38:40used in a
38:41lot more
38:41negative
38:41camber this
38:42race, and
38:42we've seen
38:43them run
38:43in recent
38:45races.
38:45Last year we
38:46saw the
38:46front of the
38:47Ferrari, the
38:48tyres seemed
38:49to lean in
38:49a lot more
38:50at the top.
38:50That's
38:50negative
38:51camber which
38:51gives a
38:52little bit
38:52more grip
38:53mid-corner.
38:54Then this
38:54year when
38:55Bridgestone
38:55developed those
38:56sort of
38:56Michelin S
38:57square-shouldered
38:57tyres, they
38:58did away with
38:59that and it
38:59went to a
39:00much more
39:00straight-up
39:01sector of
39:02the tyre.
39:03But now
39:03here, David,
39:04as you
39:04pointed out,
39:05Ferrari running
39:06a lot more
39:06negative
39:06camber.
39:07Right there,
39:07see how
39:07it's
39:08leaning
39:08in at
39:08the
39:08top?
39:09I'd be
39:09surprised if
39:11Bridgestone are
39:12using some
39:12sort of
39:13compound of
39:13construction
39:13similar to
39:14what they
39:14had last
39:15year for
39:16around here.
39:17They don't
39:17seem to be
39:17quite as
39:18square-cut as
39:19they were
39:19before.
39:20I wonder if
39:20they've just...
39:23Quite a bit
39:23of locking-up
39:24going on with
39:24the Ferraris.
39:25They've both
39:26locked up
39:26going to
39:26the source.
39:27He's locked
39:27up there
39:27going to
39:28the bus
39:29stop two
39:29or three
39:30times,
39:30which would
39:31again indicate
39:31a harder
39:32tyre and
39:33maybe not
39:34much
39:34downforce.
39:43Irvin's
39:44working hard.
39:45Be sure to
39:45join us
39:46Sunday morning

39:56interviews with
39:56Peter Windsor.
39:58Again, that's
39:58Sunday morning
39:59at 7.30 a.m.
40:01Eastern,
40:01live and only
40:02here on speed.
40:02However, it is
40:03subject to blackout.
40:05Oh, on board
40:07they must
40:08not be able
40:08to get the
40:09signal there
40:09because they
40:09keep pulling
40:10away at
40:10that point.
40:13That is
40:14where Jonathan
40:15Palmer,
40:15who now
40:16owns
40:16Grand
40:17Hatch
40:17Circuit
40:18in England
40:18and several
40:18others and
40:19is talking
40:19about starting
40:20his own
40:20racing series
40:23once
40:23destroyed
40:24a Porsche
40:26and deprived
40:27our David
40:27Hobbs of
40:28a weekend
40:28of racing.
40:29Yes,
40:29it's very
40:30inconsiderate
40:30of him.
40:31I know
40:31he's in
40:31hospital
40:31with broken
40:32legs,
40:32but he
40:32should have
40:33been thinking
40:33of his
40:33co-driving
40:36that was
40:36at Pouhon.
40:37Of course,
40:38it didn't
40:38have the
40:38runoff
40:38it's got
40:39now.
40:39The guardrail
40:40was more
40:40like that
40:41there,
40:41you see,
40:42going up
40:42the straight.
40:43It was
40:43right to
40:43the edge
40:43of the
40:43road
40:44on the
40:44exit
40:45there,
40:45and poor
40:46old
40:46Jonathan
40:46I think
40:47something
40:47let go
40:48and he
40:48slid off
40:48the road
40:49into the
40:49guardrail
40:49and broke
40:51his leg.
40:55Bouton
40:55doing a
40:56fairly good
40:56lap
40:56here.
40:57Jean-son
40:58Bouton.
40:59I asked
41:00Alisa Gibson,
41:01the chief
41:01mechanic
41:01at BAR
41:03exactly how
41:04was the
41:04atmosphere
41:05at the
41:05Hungaro
41:06ring when
41:08Jenson
41:08Bouton came
41:09into the
41:09garage that
41:10day after
41:11the scandal
41:11about him
41:12going to
41:12Williams
41:12or not
41:13going to
41:13Williams.
41:13He said,
41:14you know,
41:14to be honest,
41:15I have to
41:15say it
41:16really was
41:16quite strange
41:17and I
41:18said,
41:18well,
41:18you know,
41:19we see
41:19drivers come
41:20and go
41:20all the
41:20while
41:20and Alisa,
41:21you know,
41:22you're a
41:22mechanic and
41:23you see this
41:23happening all
41:24the while.
41:24Did it
41:24really affect
41:25you that
41:25about it?
41:25He said,
41:25what made
41:29it was
41:30like when
41:31Michael
41:31Schumacher
41:32joined
41:33Benetton,
41:33you could
41:33see the
41:34progress
41:34in the
41:34team,
41:35race
41:35after
41:35race
41:35after
41:36race,
41:36that's
41:37what
41:37they
41:37had
41:37at BAR
41:38and he
41:38said,
41:38he just
41:39isn't
41:39the same
41:40any longer.
41:41Well,
41:41they had
41:41put so
41:42much
41:42story
41:42Jenson
41:43and he
41:43had done
41:44very well
41:44for them
41:45and they
41:45had done
41:45well
41:45together
41:46on the
41:47podium
41:47most
41:48races
41:48this
41:48year.
41:49mean,
41:49just
41:49so much
41:50success.
41:50Terrible
41:51shot.
41:51Honda
41:51was so
41:52behind
41:52Button.
41:54There
41:55is yet
41:55to be
41:55a date
41:56for the
41:56hearing
41:57in front
41:57of the
41:57contract
41:58recognition
41:58board
41:59and we
41:59understand
41:59that
42:00Williams
42:00has not
42:01filed
42:02Jenson
42:02Button's
42:03proposed
42:04new contract
42:04with BMW
42:05Williams
