‘THIS WAS AN ISSUE! TAPOS DINISPLAY?’

Senator-judge Pia Cayetano questioned the brief display of a Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) document being shown on screen during Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial. She pointed out that the court had not yet decided if the subpoenaed tax records could be made public.

Cayetano asked why the BIR document was displayed for about 20 to 30 seconds. Presiding Officer Chiz Escudero said the summary table was quickly removed. (Video courtesy of Senate of the Philippines)

00:00prosecution and their
00:02technical person to wait
00:04because this was an issue. Tapos
00:06dinisplay ng, what, 20 seconds?
00:0830 seconds? So maybe his
00:10honor can also caution everyone
00:12including the media. That has not been ruled
00:14upon yet. Yes, Senator Judge
00:16Pia Cayetana is recognized. What is your
00:18pleasure, ma'am? Thank you. No, I'd just like
00:20to get clarity on the
00:22objection of the defense.
00:25You may proceed, ma'am.
00:26Thank you, sir.
00:27Are you objecting
00:29to the public
00:32sharing of the document? For
00:34now, that is the only objection on
00:36the floor, the public display
00:37of the document.
00:40I think we were giving a
00:42printed copy, but the public display.
00:44Correct, Your Honor. Okay, so that's the issue.
00:46I just want to be clear on
00:47the presiding officer.
00:58Apologies.
00:59Were you throwing the question at the PO or the
01:01counsel? I thought you were going to ask the
01:02counsel.
01:03No, it was a question to counsel, but I need
01:05the presiding officer to hear the answer.
01:07Ah, yes, please.
01:08Yeah, that's all.
01:09Kindly, kindly, kindly respond,
01:11Attorney Christine, the
01:13We confirm, Your Honor.
01:16My question, Your Honor, was simply, I just wanted clarity on what was the objection, if it is, and is
01:23it specifically on the public display of the document, and they confirm that that is what it is. Because I
01:29know the presiding officer is going to make a ruling, so I wanted to be sure we're on the same
01:33page. Thank you.
01:38Apologies, Senator Jespia. We're still in the middle of it.
01:41No problem. But did his Honor get it?
01:43Yes, the presiding officer got the objection of Attorney Christine. This is the point earlier raised by her as well.
01:50And I said, let's cross the bridge when we get there.
01:53And we are there.
01:54And we got there, and it was actually already displayed. So that's the problem. Maybe we have to remind counsel
02:00and the prosecution and their technical person to wait. Because this was an issue.
02:06Oh, that was the display of what? 20 seconds? 30 seconds? So maybe his Honor can also caution everyone, including
02:13the media. That has not been ruled upon yet.
02:20It needed to be displayed for us to be able to get there. But it was taken down right after.
02:28Otherwise, there was nothing for the council to object to, Senator Judge Pia.
02:35But it was taken down after.
