00:25In Spain, mass protests have erupted in Madrid following the death of 87-year-old Mari Carmen Abascal two weeks
00:33after being evicted from her home.
00:40Trump administration has refused to invite international election monitors from the Ostsee for the upcoming November midterm elections.
00:59Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Carecas, Venezuela.
01:04We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:22Argentine police have violently evicted university students occupying the Education Secretariat in Buenos Aires following protests against federal budget freezes.
01:31Hundreds of students occupied the Pisurno Palace in a peaceful sit-in demanding implementation of the university financing law previously
01:42upheld by courts against executive suspension degrees.
01:45After education authorities refused to address demands over frozen budgets, faculty wages and student aid,
01:53federal security forces deployed tear gas to clear the building.
01:58Student unions denounced the repressions and called for a massive national university march on October 15th alongside rural and disability
02:08rights organizations.
02:28Hundreds of university and secondary school students marched through Rio de Janeiro to protest against the presidential candidacy of Flavio
02:36Bolsonaro and the prospect of far-right returns.
02:40The protest comes weeks before the presidential runoff as citizens reject a far-right return to power.
02:47Flavio Bolsonaro proposed budget cuts and plans to amnesty his father, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for
02:54attempting to carry out a coup against current Brazilian president and re-election candidate Lula da Silva.
03:02Furthermore, protesters recalled cuts to universities, scholarships and free medication programs under Flavio Bolsonaro's father, Jair Bolsonaro.
03:20This is against the far-right that has come into power.
03:24This movement of the Liberal Party that is growing in the Senate.
03:27It is a movement of all students against that.
03:31I believe there needs to be a real student movement against the six-day working week with one day off
03:35and in defense of workers.
03:37I think those are the main movements that come to mind, in defense of public education as well.
03:49We must take to the streets today because if Flavio Bolsonaro is elected, Brazil risks becoming a colony of the
03:55United States.
03:56Brazil also risks going through a severe process of deindustrialization.
04:00Our resources will continue to flow abroad at an even faster rate.
04:05This will intensify competition and leave the Brazilian people increasingly at the mercy of a violent imperialism that needs to
04:13compensate for its loss of resources to China.
04:17Their project is to increase the transfer of wealth out of Latin America, taking our resources with it.
04:29And in Peru, in other information, right-wing President Keiko Fujimori has created a joint military police command to tackle
04:36rising crime,
04:37aligning Peru with a growing wave of iron-fested regimes across Latin America.
04:43Deploying over 1,300 elite troops at army headquarters, Fujimori's security strategy mirrors the militarized policies of Nayib Bukele in
04:53El Salvador and Daniel Novoa in Ecuador.
04:55As conservative governments across the region increasingly rely on state emergency decrees and armed forces for internal policing,
05:04human rights analysts warn that this continental shift toward iron-fested governance erodes civil liberties and suppresses social dissent,
05:14while failing to tackle the structure of poverty-driving crime.
05:35In Ecuador, a hail storm has left several streets of the capital, Quito, under snow.
05:40The Metropolitan Transit Agency deployed more than 137 officials at three points in the city to manage road closures,
05:49diversions and coordinate the clearing of the affected roads after at least 18 emergencies related to the precipitation had been
05:58reported by Wednesday afternoon.
06:00For its part, the Quito Public Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sanitation Company deployed around 45 technicians and workers
06:08to deal with the emergencies caused by the severe hail storm.
06:12Emergency teams used heavy machinery to remove accumulated hail at the Atahualpa Avenue underpass in northern Quito,
06:21where approximately 350 cubic meters of ice had built up, forming a layer nearly 60 centimeters thick.
06:37And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember, you can join us on TikTok at TELASURY

07:09Welcome back to From the South.
07:11In the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, the Venezuelan delegation led the opening of the 41st session of the United States.
07:18United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAG.
07:22The Venezuelan Foreign Minister thanked the countries of the region for the support of the Venezuelan people
07:28perceived following the double earthquake of June 24th.
07:33He also prized the document presented by ECLAG, which refers to the value of transformations and how to implement them.
07:41Félix Plasencia reaffirmed Venezuela's commitment to consolidating a system of justice and social equality,
07:49as stated by Acting President Delsi Rodriguez before the United Nations.
07:58For Venezuela, this assessment confirms a fundamental belief.
08:03In an increasingly power-dominated world, international law and multilateralism must guarantee development,
08:10and this requires respect for the UN Charter, the sovereign equality of states, and collectively agreed upon norms.
08:18This is essential for preserving the policy space of developing countries and for building fairer, more equitable economic relationships.
08:28In other topics in Spain, mass protests have erupted in Madrid following the death of an 87-year-old woman
08:35evicted from her home by predatory rent hikes.
08:38Hundreds gather to more Marie Carmen Abascal, who died two weeks after being evicted from her home of 71 years
08:46when her rent surged over 400%.
08:50Demonstrators chanted,
08:52These aren't deaths, they are murders, linking her tragic passing to profit-driving housing speculation.
08:59The tragedy has catalyzed massive nationwide rallies following Parliament's rejection of tenant protection laws,
09:06deepening the political crisis surrounding Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government.
09:21And South Korea announced that it will consider withdrawing its ambassador to Ukraine
09:27following the leak of the confidential transfer of North Korean prisoners.
09:31The government described the apology issued by Kyiv as insufficient,
09:35and is considering withdrawing its ambassador to Ukraine, Park Hee Chang,
09:40following the public leak regarding the secret transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul.
09:46The controversy erupted after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
09:53openly revealed the transfer bridging the confidentiality agreement between the two nations intended to protect the families of soldiers in
10:01North Korea.
10:02South Korean Foreign Minister Shoo Jung warned as well that they will take drastic diplomatic measures,
10:09refusing to accept that the incident was merely a misunderstanding.
10:20Also in the Chinese city of Hong Kong, law enforcement has arrested nine people over illegal fuel smuggling
10:27as global energy market volatility drives up oil prices.
10:31Customs officials seized over 30,000 litres of smuggled fuel following a city-wide crackdown on syndicates using modified vehicles
10:40across border checkpoints.
10:41The illegal trade is driven by surging global oil prices that continue to squeeze import-dependent economies.
10:49Analysts point to Western geopolitical instability and market speculations as key drivers of the energy shock,
10:57which inflates domestic costs and fuels black market commerce across the region.
11:10Also the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to surge,
11:16with health authorities confirming 8,665 cases and 4,178 deaths.
11:23The World Health Organization confirmed that the outbreak declared in May is now the second largest on record,
11:31with a fatality rate standing at over 48%.
11:34While more than 2,000 patients have recovered, nearly 900 remain hospitalized.
11:40As healthcare systems struggle under severe medical demands,
11:44global health observers and local response teams are calling for emergency healthcare resources
11:49to control transmission and support public health infrastructure across affected regions.
12:18On Thursday, Canadian poet Anne Carson was announced as the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize,
12:25in literature.
12:26The new permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, Ingrid Kahlberg, stated Carson was selected for her bold and inventive over
12:35that in playful dialogue with the classical tradition has created new forms of contemporary literature.
12:43Born in 1950 in Toronto, Carson earned a PhD in classics and has taught at a number of universities throughout
12:51her decades-long career.
12:53A poet classicist and translator among her works stands out titles such as
12:59Plain Water, Ron Norma, The Beauty of the Husband, and Genra Crossing, Autobiography of Red.
13:06Carson becomes only the 19th woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature,

14:07Welcome back to From the South.

14:17breaking a two-decade democratic oversight practice.
14:20For the first time since 2002, observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
14:27will be absent from U.S. congressional elections following the White House's decision.
14:32rights organizations and opposition lawmakers denounce the move as an eruption of transparency,
14:39expressing heightened concern over voter protection as the Justice Department plans to deploy its own federal agents
14:47to polling sites amidst record low presidential approval ratings.
15:15Germany leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi urged Turkey and Pakistan to reject being drawn into Saudi Arabia's military campaign in
15:24Germany as regional tensions escalate.
15:26Denouncing deadlocked negotiations, al-Houthi condemned Rijad for maintaining illegal economic blockades on Germany's airports and vital resources while stepping
15:38up military aggression.
15:40Fighting has intensified near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait marked by increased Saudi air raids and Germany drone strikes
15:49targeting military positions.
15:51The movement prize anti-war voices across the region warning that foreign military alliances will only deepen the conflict and
16:00undermine national sovereignty.
16:09...or whose systems they seek to emulate in their aggression against our country, or in their participation in it at
16:16any level.
16:18In Turkey, I greatly appreciate the noble stances and the free and conscious voices that oppose any participation in the
16:26aggression against the Yemeni people,
16:29and the reality of what the Saudi aggressor is doing to our dear people.
16:37These facts are also important for the people of Pakistan and the Muslim community.
16:44Their free voices are appreciated by our people.
16:48Who oppose any Pakistani involvement in aggression against our country?
16:54Also in Berlin, German police have violently suppressed a pro-Palestinian march detaining multiple demonstrators as they oppose the ongoing
17:02Israeli genocide in Gaza.
17:04German security forces brutally intercepted hundreds of marching activists deploying heavy tactics, including pushing and pinning protesters to the ground.
17:13The demonstration denounced three years of Israeli military aggression that has slaughtered over 74,000 Palestinians,
17:24faced the state's repression that seeks to criminalize solidarity with Palestine,
17:29also authorities fused the pretext of banned symbols to break up the anti-genocide gathering,
17:35and as human rights groups warned of systematic crackdowns on anti-war dissent in Berlin.
17:50The protest occurred amid Berlin's decision to illuminate the Brandenburg Gate in Israeli colours and the Israeli flag on Wednesday
17:58night.
17:59This was done to commemorate the victims of the October 7th attack,
18:04which marked the beginning of the latter escalation of Zionist violence against the Palestinian people.
18:08However, this move completely ignored Tel Aviv's ongoing genocide in Gaza and was met with widespread condemnation.
18:16Over three years of relentless Israeli aggression and military bombardment have resulted in the slaughter of more than 74,000
18:25Palestinians
18:25and the destruction of Gaza's vital infrastructure.
18:35Also in Morocco, mass protests have erupted outside Parliament demanding an immediate end to diplomatic ties with Israel amid the
18:43ongoing genocide in Gaza.
18:45Hundreds of activists rallied in Rabat chanting in support of Palestinian resistance and rejected plans to elevate diplomatic representation with
18:54Tel Aviv to full embassy status.
18:56The protest condemned the 2020 Washington brokered normalisation deal,
19:01which traded ties with Israel for US recognition of Morocco's claims over Western Sahara.
19:08Organised by leftist and Islamic coalitions, popular movements vowed to keep taking the streets until the monarchy cuts all relations
19:17with the occupation.
19:28Also in Tunisia, thousands have marched through the streets to reaffirm and wavering solidarity with Palestine and condemn Israel's ongoing
19:37genocide in Gaza.
19:38The massive rally joined ongoing popular mobilisations across the country, keeping the Palestinian liberation struggle at the centre of Tunisian
19:46public life.
19:48Demonstrators called for total opposition to Zionist aggression, highlighting North Africa's deep-rooted anti-imperialist commitment to global south, solidarity
20:00and Palestinian self-determination.
20:11Meanwhile, the United Kingdom announced that the seas of activities of its consulate in Occupied Jerusalem amid increasing diplomatic tensions
20:18with Israel.
20:19Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sahar says the UK consulate in Occupied Jerusalem is ending its activities on Thursday, adding that
20:28it will continue operating under a limited capacity and the signature of the consulate building has been removed accordingly.
20:36This comes 30 days after Sahar demanded the consulate close in a month in response to the UK imposing sanctions
20:45on illegal Israeli settlements and banning imported goods made there.
20:50For his part, UK foreign minister Ev Milaban says the UK consulate building in Occupied Jerusalem will not be closing
20:59but will be known as the UK mission from today, adding that the UK has temporarily withdrawn several staff and
21:07families from the city to ensure their safety and security.
