Willard and Dibs open the show by asking the audience how much they hate the Seahawks. Is this one of the best rivalries in your sports fandom world?
Transcript
00:00First of all, there's the Kyle Shanahan, Mike McDonald thing.
00:02I think there'll be a lot of that.
00:04But there's also this.
00:05And I wonder, 888-957-9570, where a game like this sits,
00:10kind of on your list right now, of rivalries, of hatred,
00:15of what gets under your skin.
00:16I was cruising around Costco today, did the Costco run.
00:19Nice.
00:19And cruising around Costco was thinking about this.
00:22I'm like, okay, if you could get a win in the other team's house to kind of,
00:28whether it's eliminate them from postseason competition
00:32or just kind of knock them way down in the division race against any team
00:39in any sport, where do the Seahawks sit on that list of your own personal hatred?
00:48I, right now, I have them moonlighting, Dib.
00:52They should be third, but they're second.
00:56They're moonlighting in second.
00:57I wonder who would be number two if they were third,
01:00because I have them at two, because you've got the Dodgers, of course, number one.
01:05And we can even close our eyes and think about, like, Joe Morgan and Brian Johnson
01:11and other great moments where the Giants kind of ruined things for the Dodgers.
01:15And those references are now 40-something years old.
01:18So for me, it's the Dodgers.
01:20They're number one.
01:21They're untouchable.
01:21And beyond that, I do think the Seahawks and the Niners are number two.
01:26But I wonder who else you would have in that mix.
01:29Well, I have the Seahawks at number two right now because of the way things developed.
01:33They won the Super Bowl last year because I think that the 49ers, in terms of a challenge
01:39and, you know, what is holding them down right now, I'm going to put the Seahawks at number two.
01:46However, normally it's the Rams.
01:49Normally it would be the Los Angeles Rams.
01:51And the only reason it's not right now is because as much as I think people, you know,
01:56oh, McVay's got a Super Bowl.
01:58Shanahan doesn't.
01:58They played in the playoffs a few years ago.
02:02The Rams won that game.
02:03Yeah, but the Niners usually get the Rams.
02:06The Niners, when we play the Rams, we usually win.
02:10When Kyle Shanahan plays the Rams, they usually win.
02:13When Matt Stafford plays against the Niners, they usually pick him off.
02:17That's usually what has happened through the years.
02:21And furthermore, they're just pieces of all of the Rams of it all
02:27that just annoy the hell out of me.
02:29Whose house?
02:30Not yours.
02:31Let's be real.
02:32So that whole L.A., San Francisco thing, the snootiness of it all,
02:37the winning a Super Bowl and you only have eight people show up at the parade,
02:41whatever, Kelly Stafford, we could go on and on.
02:44I just, it's annoying.
02:47But, yeah, right now they're not enough of a threat.
02:50The Niners went halfway across the world and crushed them by three touchdowns
02:53and I'm just not bothered by you right now.
02:55Now, the Seahawks are a legitimate problem that the 49ers,
03:00it's a puzzle that they need to solve.
03:03And so, yeah, right now the Seahawks have my attention as much as anybody.
03:09Yeah, and I think part of it for me with the Rams is that they were L.A.
03:13slash Anaheim, then they were St. Louis, and now they're back.
03:16And I guess they're in L.A.
03:18and it doesn't really feel like that same level of rivalry because what you
03:21talked about, where you go down there to play, and this year you actually
03:25didn't go down there to play.
03:26You went down under to play because they were ducking you.
03:29They didn't want you to come in and take over their stadium.
03:32And so they wanted the game in Australia, and that's the way that that went.
03:36But for Seattle, like going up there on Sunday, you know a couple of things.
03:41One, it's going to be a majority of that, I guess it's green, whatever color you
03:46would call that.
03:47I don't know.
03:48It's going to be loud.
03:49They're going to be impactful in the game.
03:5212th man, yeah.
03:53Right, there's going to be a certain amount of animosity that we feel as fans,
03:57and I don't think that we feel that any other time.
04:00Like Kansas City is a little bit of a one-off because it feels like the Super
04:03Bowl, PSD, Philadelphia, absolutely, because you go there and they're big games,
04:09and we don't like their fans either.
04:10You're Dallas, whatever.
04:12Like they're going to Dallas this year, but that is kind of more of an ancient
04:15rivalry.
04:16For me, it's this one, Seattle.
04:19It is for the moment.
04:21I hated Seattle more when Russell Wilson was the quarterback of that football
04:25team.
04:26That bothered me more, and then he left, and for a moment I was like, okay,
04:30Seattle just went back.
04:31Remember now, historically, Seattle's adorable.
04:34They're just, right?
04:35They're not really that much of a, if you really have been doing this for a
04:39while, they're not usually that much of a threat.
04:42They're an AFC West team.
04:43Exactly.
04:44And then Russell Wilson showed up, and you could never tackle him on third down,
04:48and then they won a Super Bowl, and the Niners write L.O.B. and Michael Crabtree,
04:54and all of that was happening, and then all of a sudden it got the hair on the back of
04:58the neck all up, and we were annoyed by it, but then that dissipated.
05:02It dissipated kind of epically.
05:05Russell Wilson became bad and then gone.
05:08Richard Sherman became a Niner, and the team went to the Super Bowl, and all of a
05:13sudden, 2019, 2020, 2021, I'm not bothered by the Seahawks.
05:18They're like, what if we have Geno Smith?
05:20And you're like, great, you're not coming here and winning a playoff game.
05:25And Brock Purdy beat them, and he beat them by a lot.
05:27And so I wasn't bothered by that.
05:30I'm back.
05:32They're back.
05:33They won the Super Bowl.
05:35Their defense is, I'm just going to call it, they're terrifying.
05:38Their defense is like Kyle Shanahan's offense.
05:42I think that this is, it is the most unique, hardest to figure out, the toughest game plan
05:51in the NFL.
05:52It doesn't mean that they, neither one of them, it doesn't mean they can't be beat.
05:56I just find them to be the hardest to beat.
05:59And that's the piece of this that I think starts to come into play as we get closer to
06:05this game.
06:06The Niners are 4-1 if they lose.
06:08Nothing is lost.
06:10All of that stuff is true.
06:11But there's just that, there's that brain that we all have.
06:16And I know where we're sitting in that brain right now.
06:18That brain is just, it's uncomfortable until they can beat Mike McDonald's defense.
06:25Yeah, and that's the piece of it to me, because Mike McDonald does on defense what Shanahan
06:29does on offense, which is show you something, and then as the play clock gets down to like
06:34seven, six, or five, they might shift into something, or they might drop at the snap.
06:38And he does the same thing that Kyle Shanahan does on offense.
06:42And so it's been a little bit perplexing.
06:45And then you add to the mix the fact that the Niners won't have, you know, certain pieces
06:49of their offense, but they will have McCaffrey and Debo, two guys who, in terms of a schematic
06:56flexibility standpoint, it's going to be something that McDonald has to deal with.
07:00Yep.
07:00And Mike Evans is on the football team now, George Kittle, you hope, knock on wood, is
07:05going to play a full football game, and all of the things, many of them, the Niners did
07:10not have access to last year, and this year they will.
