Scripture contains hidden meanings in the form of types, shadows and patterns; God has packed the Old Testament with hidden pictures of Himself and His saving work. God has built us to think in pictures. Prepare to be wowed as Daniel Durston from Oxford Baptist Chapel unveils the Bible's hidden depths.

00:00Rind the belief, be sure to her, and stand his words in vain.
00:10God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain.
00:22Well, a very warm welcome, Christian friends, to our Sunday evening meeting.
00:27It's good to be here, it's an honour to be here, and it's good to see some film on your
00:30faces again.
00:30Bless you all.
00:32Psalm 103 says,
00:34Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
00:42Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,
00:47who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases,
00:51who redeemeth thy life from destruction,
00:55who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
01:00who satisfieth thy mouth with good things,
01:03so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles.
01:06The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
01:11He made known his ways unto Moses,
01:13his acts unto the children of Israel.
01:15The Lord is merciful, and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
01:23Well, it's a tremendous honour to be here,
01:24and I'm very thankful for Brother Andy for asking me to come.
01:28I love God's word, and I love the word.
01:33Amen?
01:34Amen.
01:37Brother Andy has asked me to talk on a subject which, in one sense,
01:42could be a lecture,
01:44but I have a strong conviction when it comes to the things of God,
01:46if it's just a lecture, it doesn't profit us any.
01:50I say preaching should make a beeline for the cross,
01:53and it goes straight to the heart.
01:55But there is a sense, too,
01:57God's word is history, it's his book.
02:00It's full of wondrous shadows and pictures, which we should know.
02:04And there's definitely a place for it.
02:06So my aim tonight, with the Lord's help, and with his spirit,
02:09is to encourage each and every one of you.
02:12This is nothing new,
02:13but it is an encouragement, I pray.
02:15And that's something we need to do as the day draws on,
02:17to always be encouraging each other,
02:19building each other up in our most holy faith.
02:23That's all we ought to do when we come together.
02:25A few verses I read from Luke 24, as you know,
02:28were taken straight out of the road to Emmaus.
02:32And it's a very interesting passage,
02:34and it would be a different message.
02:36But essentially, you all know the story.
02:38The disciples are despondent.
02:41The Lord's been crucified.
02:44He's dead in their minds.
02:48They've given up, and with their back to Jerusalem,
02:50they're going down to a little town called Emmaus.
02:54It's about seven clicks away.
02:57And somebody comes and draws alongside them.
03:02And they don't know who it is.
03:03There's many theories about why they didn't see it,
03:06and their eyes were holding, the passage says.
03:09I take the simplest reading, and that is,
03:11they just didn't expect him.
03:13After all, he was dead.
03:15They saw the Lord hang on Calvary's cross.
03:20Why should we expect to see him?
03:23And then Christ gives them a very interesting lesson.
03:26He takes them on a history book through the Bible.
03:30That's their Bible.
03:31They didn't have the New Testament then.
03:32Starting in Moses.
03:34The beginning in Moses and all the prophets.
03:36He expounded onto them in all the scriptures
03:39the thing concerning himself.
03:40This is the key topic tonight.
03:44Biblical typology.
03:46A fancy word.
03:48It just means this.
03:50That all the scriptures point to Christ.
03:54And I think, saints, you know that.
03:56With all your reading over the years in the Old Testament,
03:58we can see pictures.
04:01So in our time together,
04:03my desire is to look at what biblical typology is,
04:07and have it really rooted in scripture.
04:10What the scriptures say,
04:11and how the New Testament authors
04:14reveal to us and use their scriptures.
04:18And then we'll talk about what typology isn't.
04:21It's so easy to get into fanciful ideas,
04:23and that's very important too.
04:26God wrote history with a purpose.
04:29Imagine outside on a bright day,
04:31and you see a shadow of somebody coming.
04:36You don't see the person,
04:37but you see their shadow.
04:39The shadow is pointing to a person.
04:43It tells you somebody's coming.
04:45And of course, once the person comes,
04:47you don't keep looking at the shadow, do you?
04:50You lift up your eyes and you see the person.
04:53That's really all biblical typology, yes.
04:58The book of Hebrews is,
04:59there's so many places that we could go.
05:03But the book of Hebrews is so interesting
05:05because essentially the new converts there
05:09were tempted to go back to Judaism.
05:12And the author of Hebrews says,
05:14no, don't do that.
05:15All the things you revere,
05:17Moses and the angels and the prophets,
05:20they're just shadows pointing to somebody greater.
05:24Jesus is our great high priest.
05:26He is a better and living way.
05:31And he's almost saying to them,
05:32you've got yourself a colour TV now.
05:34Why go back to the black and white one?
05:39And such is the nature
05:40when we look at some of these themes and types
05:42given in the Old Testament.
05:45Colossians 2, 17 says,
05:47which are a shadow of things to come.
05:50So this idea of typology or types,
05:53in the original it's really the idea of a typewriter.
05:56And when you strike a key,
05:57it leaves an impression.
06:00The impression is left.
06:01It's pointed to someone behind it.
06:05Just before we go into looking at
06:08some of the great examples,
06:10and again, there's so many,
06:12let's look at just a few ideas
06:13we'll all be comfortable with.
06:15I'm going to try and do that in my glasses.
06:20In the Old Testament,
06:22God has already packed it
06:23with shadows, patterns, pictures
06:27of him and a saving work.
06:29And they're real events,
06:31which really happened.
06:33They're real people that really existed.
06:36They're real.
06:37But they're point beyond them.
06:39And that's the first one for that
06:41you and I live after Christ.
06:43We can look back with a luxury
06:45of these anti-types.
06:47So the types were established
06:49in the Old Testament
06:51and they've been revealed
06:52through the anti-types.
06:53Remember, anti doesn't just mean against.
06:55It means in the place of,
06:57like the anti-Christ, for example,
06:59in the place of.
07:00So we have the types which have been set,
07:02shadows,
07:03and now we have a fulfilment
07:05in Christ.
07:06Amen?
07:08And so we don't keep looking
07:09at the shadows, do we?
07:11We look to the revealment of them.
07:14There were lambs in the Old Testament.
07:16Well, we all know about lambs.
07:18And of course, who is the Lamb of God?
07:21Did John the Baptist not say in John 1,
07:23behold the Lamb of God?
07:25That's important because the credentials
07:27of John the Baptist
07:27are established in Luke's opening gospel.
07:30He feels it important to give the credentials
07:33of Zacharias and Elizabeth.
07:35They were from the lineage of Levi.
07:37They were from a priestly tribe.
07:38And of course, next is Gabriel
07:40and Zacharias is in the temple
07:44and he sees the angel there
07:46and he says,
07:47you're going to have a son.
07:48That's strange.
07:48Elizabeth was well-stricken in age.
07:51And of course, then John comes
07:53and his ministry,
07:55he grows up,
07:55a ministry of repentance.
07:57And he was,
07:58from a priestly home,
08:00from priestly parents,
08:02the real high priest,
08:04not Caiaphas' outfit
08:05because the Romans would appoint,
08:06just for the peace,
08:07those who weren't really
08:10authorized to be the higher priest.
08:12It was really John the Baptist.
08:13So if you read the early gospels,
08:14you see John is always in the four,
08:17the very early chapters.
08:18But his job is only singular,
08:20is to point to Christ.
08:22And so when he grows up
08:23and has the ministry of repentance
08:24and then preaches repentance
08:25and baptized in Jordan,
08:27he says,
08:27behold the Lamb of God.
08:29He was qualified and certified
08:31to identify,
08:32to verify
08:34the Lamb of God.
08:36And so the fulfilment
08:37comes through John the Baptist
08:39because he's one
08:40who verifies Jesus
08:42as the Lamb.
08:44So all these ideas,
08:45these early Jews,
08:46fully understood,
08:48is being moved along
08:50and into maturity.
08:52So the real fruition,
08:53the real picture.
08:54So the New Testament
08:55is exciting times.
08:56It's exciting times
08:57for us saints.
08:57The priests,
08:58the sacrifices,
08:59the temple.
09:00You ever read those
09:01long chapters in Exodus
09:03and Leviticus?
09:04So many details.
09:07Chapter 25,
09:08for example,
09:08in Exodus
09:09is the lampstand,
09:10the gold menorah,
09:10beaten out of one piece
09:12of gold
09:14and has three arms
09:16on each side
09:16and one in the middle
09:17and knots and bowls,
09:19three on each one.
09:21Amazing there's no time
09:22to do this,
09:23but that's a picture
09:23of the Word of God.
09:25Thy Word
09:26is a lamp to a feet
09:27of light to my path.
09:29Remember,
09:29in their holy place,
09:30that was the only source
09:31of light
09:32with badger skins
09:33and ram skins.
09:34It was very dark in there
09:35and after the blood
09:36had been dealt with
09:37and the mess of the outer core,
09:38the priest would have come in
09:39and that was the only source
09:40of light.
09:42And once God lit it
09:43the first time,
09:43he charged the priest
09:44to keep it lit.
09:46It was his responsibility
09:47to fan into flames
09:48to keep it filled with oil.
09:50That's important.
09:51That's a picture of light.
09:52And then in front of you
09:53you see the altar of incense.
09:54That's the prayers and praise
09:55of the saint,
09:56is there not?
09:57On your right,
09:58the table of showbread.
10:00It's interesting,
10:00those three things
10:02occur again
10:02in the early church
10:03in Acts 2.
10:04You have the apostles
10:06preaching the word,
10:07the word of God.
10:09You have the prayers
10:09of the saints
10:11and then you have
10:12the table,
10:13the breaking of the Lord's bread.
10:14So the patterns
10:15have been established
10:16in the old
10:17and then they come alive
10:19in the new.
10:20And of course,
10:21the temple.
10:23Know ye not that ye are
10:25the temple of the Holy Spirit?
10:26I believe it has
10:26an individual meaning,
10:28where we indwell,
10:29God indwells us.
10:30It's an amazing thing.
10:31But of course,
10:32corporately,
10:33God is in us
10:34as a temple.
10:36We are the building
10:38of God,
10:38I'll be not
10:38what Timothy 3 tells us.
10:40And of course,
10:41the Exodus,
10:42we see all these pictures,
10:44a picture of deliverance
10:45from bondage.
10:47All those chapters
10:48with Pharaoh,
10:50400 years,
10:51enslavement to bondage,
10:52God's people.
10:53And so the Bible labours
10:55and God wants us
10:56to know history.
10:58One of the unfortunate things
10:59is with our Bible
11:00is in the third century
11:02we did chapter and verse divisions.
11:04It wasn't done
11:05at the same time.
11:05At first it was chapter divisions
11:06and then verses.
11:08It's very unhelpful.
11:09It's very unhelpful,
11:11not just because many times
11:12are in the wrong place,
11:12but what it means
11:13is we tend to read the Bible
11:14and we elevate text
11:18by merit of the verses
11:19they are.
11:21Rather than be like
11:22the Bereans
11:22who had to search
11:23the scriptures
11:24to see if the things
11:25that would be told
11:25were true.
11:26If there's no chapter
11:28and verse divisions
11:28you've got to search
11:29the scriptures.
11:29You need to know
11:30the scriptures.
11:31And that gives you
11:31a full up panoramic
11:33of God's history.
11:35And we can miss
11:36these things.
11:38So it's amazing
11:39that God's redemptive
11:40unfolding story
11:42is done through pictures.
11:43Have you ever thought
11:43about that?
11:45If I say horse,
11:46do you see HMRC
11:47in your mind
11:47or do you see your horse?
11:49We're built
11:50to think in pictures.
11:51And so even
11:51the great plan
11:52of redemption
11:52God has given to us
11:54in picture form
11:54through types.
11:56Real types,
11:57real events,
11:58real people in time,
12:00but to teach us
12:01something in their
12:02fulfilment.
12:03And again,
12:04it all points to Christ
12:05in the redemptive work.
12:06It's rather amazing,
12:07which is why
12:08if we can look
12:09at the panoramic
12:10of scripture
12:10we'll suddenly see
12:11these things.
12:12And I'm sure
12:12many things we do see.
12:16We know about
12:17the manna
12:17from heaven.
12:19God,
12:19Jesus,
12:20is the bread of life.
12:22He really is.
12:23There really was manna
12:24which came daily.
12:26So what is
12:27biblical typology?
12:29Just something here
12:30which might be helpful.
12:31A biblical type
12:32is a real person,
12:33event,
12:34institutional object
12:35in early biblical history
12:37that God designed
12:38to foreshadow
12:40a greater reality.
12:42This is why
12:43we need to know
12:44the word.
12:46many Christians
12:47just dwell
12:47in the New Testament
12:48in ignorance
12:49might I add
12:50because we miss
12:51the richness.
12:52In fact,
12:53the Old Testament
12:53we can often learn
12:54more about the nature
12:55and character of God
12:56than the new.
12:58God is the same
12:59but he's established
13:00types and patterns
13:01and shadows
13:02and the more
13:03they're understood
13:03and appreciated
13:05then when we look forward
13:07how more brilliant
13:09Christ becomes
13:10and the work of redemption.
13:12Amen?
13:18Adam,
13:19Christ.
13:21Christ is
13:22the last Adam.
13:24The Passover lamb,
13:25Christ.
13:26Exodus,
13:27salvation.
13:28Manna,
13:29Christ the bread of life.
13:30The bronze serpent,
13:32Christ has lifted up.
13:33High priest,
13:34Christ is our
13:35great high priest.
13:36The temple,
13:37Christ and his people.
13:39The type is really in itself
13:40but it also points
13:42beyond the self.
13:44It's really important.
13:46We'll look at some
13:47of these examples.
13:48I mean,
13:48there's so many
13:49we could go to
13:50but it's important
13:51to know that
13:52the events
13:52really happened.
13:54We could look at
13:55one type of the ark
13:56which is always
13:57a picture of salvation.
13:58Noah and his family.
13:59There really was an ark
14:00and that's interesting.
14:01I think they found it.
14:02It's not the first expedition
14:04to find Noah's ark
14:05at the mountains
14:06of Ararat.
14:07There was an expedition
14:08I think by Ron Wyatt
14:09about 20 years ago
14:10and they found something.
14:12He actually maps it out
14:13and has laser imaging
14:14to the best of the technology
14:16it had then
14:16and there was definitely
14:17metal that was used
14:18in the ark
14:18but because of the
14:19political situation
14:20in Turkey at the time
14:21they weren't allowed back
14:22so they thought
14:23they'd found it.
14:24It seems like now
14:25with the very immediate
14:28interest in Noah's ark
14:30that they've just about
14:31verified here
14:32we're pretty sure
14:32this is definitely
14:33a man-made object
14:34and looks exactly
14:35the dimensions of Noah's ark.
14:36I'm not sure
14:36if you knew that.
14:37That's interesting
14:38and again
14:39I'm not saying anything here
14:40we can't press this too far
14:42but remember when our law says
14:43as in the days of Noah
14:46so will the coming
14:47of the son of man be.
14:48Well we see a lot of things
14:49don't we?
14:50Now I don't want to put
14:51any theology here
14:52but it's kind of interesting
14:53that with all this chaos
14:54going on
14:56and absolute rebellion
14:57against God
14:58that God is bringing
14:59a type that he established
15:00in the Old Testament
15:01to the fore
15:02of modern humanity
15:04in time
15:04I find that interesting.
15:09God is sovereign
15:10is he not?
15:11Has not God
15:12ordered history?
15:14We still have free will
15:16but just like
15:17a master chess player
15:19who allows his opponent
15:21to make any move
15:22he chooses
15:22God always comes out
15:23the victim
15:24always every time.
15:28So typology teaches us
15:29something very significant
15:33the story of redemption
15:37was portrayed through
15:38real-time events
15:40real-time people
15:42I don't know if you've
15:43thought about that
15:43some people kind of
15:44come to scripture
15:45and especially with
15:45a chapter of those divisions
15:47and it's all kind of
15:48disconnected
15:50it's not harmonious
15:51from Genesis to Revelation
15:54and quite frankly
15:56that would be quite boring
15:57and I think a lot of people
15:59will read it that way
16:01surely pick verses
16:02like a verse a day
16:03keeps a doctor away
16:04type of thing
16:05and they miss out
16:06on this typology
16:06and we'll look at that
16:07later
16:07if there's time
16:08we'll look at
16:09why this is important
16:10to look at the Bible
16:11rightly
16:12like the ancient Jews did
16:13this is their history
16:15we've been drafted in
16:16we need to know this
16:18point number two
16:19it's important to know
16:20that typology
16:20is not the same as prophecy
16:24Isaiah 714 says
16:25behold a virgin
16:26shall conceive
16:27and bear a son
16:28that's a verbal prophecy
16:31there's words in the prophecy
16:33that point forwards
16:34to something that will happen
16:35but suppose God commands Israel
16:37to take a spotless lamb
16:38kill it
16:39put its blood upon the houses
16:40and shelter beneath that blood
16:42while judgment passes through Egypt
16:45that's different
16:46it's taking a picture
16:48and applying a meaning to it
16:51now ultimately of course
16:52we know when the blood is applied
16:54to those lintels
16:54that angel of death passed over
16:56we know the Passover story
16:57don't we
16:57but of course
16:58Jesus is our Passover lamb
17:01and we understand that now
17:02as New Testament Christians
17:03don't we
17:03because the blood
17:04has been applied to our lives
17:06the blood of the lamb
17:08we're okay
17:10we're spared the wrath of God
17:13so we understand
17:14these pictures already
17:14don't we
17:15they're very well established pictures
17:16but there's so many more
17:18in scripture
17:20so many more
17:21and of course
17:22you know
17:22the Passover lamb
17:24becomes
17:24really significant
17:26because I think
17:26modern evangelism
17:27has been quite narrow
17:30it's kind of just delivered
17:31evangelism
17:32as a message of
17:33a life insurance policy
17:35like get out of hell free
17:36right
17:37and that's a real shame
17:38because we miss the richness
17:39because actually
17:40Jesus came to save us
17:42from our sins
17:44but often
17:45I think
17:45modern evangelism
17:46is that sinless prayer
17:48and you say that
17:49one sinless prayer
17:5050 years ago
17:51and now you're a Christian
17:51the Bible uses different words
17:53it uses like disciple
17:54the way
17:55a race
17:56it's
17:57we work out
17:58salvation
17:59it's all by grace
18:00we don't work for our salvation
18:01God forbid
18:02but I guess it would be more like
18:04Bunyan's allegory
18:06the pilgrim's progress
18:07God is more interested
18:09in the walk
18:10we're being made
18:11more like Jesus
18:12we are his workmanship
18:14we are being saved
18:15from our sins
18:16we tend to just focus on
18:18we were saved
18:19Ephesians 2
18:20and we miss the rest of it
18:21so all these types
18:22come out
18:23and that's how we
18:24walk out
18:25our Christian life
18:27typology is not
18:28allegorical fantasy
18:29and here we need to be careful
18:30because it's easy
18:31to grab a theme
18:33in the Old Testament
18:33and just run away with it
18:36and I think
18:36the strongest caution is
18:38we need to
18:39have the Old Testament
18:40see how the authors
18:41use the Old Testament stories
18:43is that
18:44that establishes
18:45typology correctly
18:46they've used it
18:47a certain way
18:48they've recognised
18:48through the inspiration
18:49of the Holy Spirit
18:50yes there was a historical event
18:52and it does actually mean this
18:54in God's
18:54forward work of redemption
18:56but it's easy though
18:58just to go a bit silly
18:59with this
18:59we do see this
19:01one silly example is
19:02we might read
19:03that Abraham had three camels
19:05therefore they represent
19:06the Father, Son
19:06and the Holy Ghost
19:08well that's silly isn't it
19:09but we do see these things
19:10people try to put
19:12patterns and puzzles
19:13to things
19:13which aren't warranted
19:14in the text
19:15so a real safeguard
19:16is to say
19:17let's read the New Testament
19:18how do the
19:19New Testament authors
19:20when they cite
19:22and they do many times
19:23Old Testament passage
19:24what do they do with it
19:25and of course
19:26a big one
19:27as we mentioned
19:28of course is
19:28Jesus is the Lamb of God
19:30that's a big one
19:30but there's many others
19:32Noah the Ark
19:33Ark of Salvation
19:34and of course
19:35then we're in safe territory
19:36and we can say
19:37yes that is
19:37biblical typology
19:41so more of a word
19:42of caution then
19:43biblical typology
19:45begins with real
19:46historical meaning
19:47and follows patterns
19:48established by
19:49scripture itself
19:49this is interesting
19:51because it's important
19:52that something
19:52that's happened
19:53actually happened first
19:55for it to be
19:55a type that is used
19:57later
19:57as the story of redemption
19:59flows forward
20:00and I think
20:01when God created
20:02the world
20:05God created
20:06the physical world
20:07after patterns
20:08of how the spiritual
20:09realm works
20:10let me explain
20:12Mark 4
20:12we all know
20:13the power of the
20:13sower and the seed
20:16well our Lord
20:17takes exactly
20:18the same principle
20:18and say
20:19you've got to be
20:19born again
20:20and 1 Peter says
20:22we are born
20:23not of incorruptible seed
20:24not of corruptible
20:25but incorruptible
20:26how
20:26by the word of God
20:28that lives and died forever
20:29the idea is the same
20:30it's a seed
20:31that's God's seed
20:32in our heart
20:33and there's new birth
20:34amen
20:35and of course
20:36the farmer
20:36understand the picture
20:37of the seed
20:38so even the natural world
20:39God has created
20:40light and darkness
20:42a huge dominant theme
20:43in scripture
20:44with apostle John
20:45isn't it
20:45we all understand
20:46light and darkness
20:47don't we
20:48if I was to switch
20:49the light off in here
20:50and I say to Jessica
20:51Jessica
20:52can you give her
20:53the darkness
20:53because I don't like it
20:55I gave her a bucket
20:56and she's to fill the bucket
20:57with darkness
20:58and empty you out the door
20:58and come back
20:59and keep doing that
20:59would that work
21:00that's silly isn't it
21:02there's only one way
21:03to dispel darkness
21:05and that's the light
21:05again a dominant theme
21:07John uses
21:08and we understand that
21:10so again I believe
21:12God uses in the physical
21:13in the world of physics
21:15light in this example
21:17to teach us about things
21:18of how they work up there
21:20and indeed
21:21is that not what a parable is
21:22a natural story
21:23with a spiritual meaning
21:24of revelation
21:25so you see these things
21:26all really intimately
21:27interwoven
21:28so you would understand
21:29I believe we need
21:30to understand
21:31and God would have
21:32understand his word
21:33sometimes we kind of
21:34make the bible cryptic
21:35and I do partially blame
21:37the chapter and verse
21:38divisions for that
21:39because it's all
21:40kind of disjointed
21:42but that the discussion
21:44of biblical types
21:45is really important
21:46because actually
21:47if we didn't call it
21:48biblical typology
21:49you could read from
21:50Genesis to Revelation
21:51and you could see
21:53these patterns
21:53naturally develop
21:56does that make sense
21:57how it's not really
21:58a lecture
21:58it's just
21:59if we read
22:00faithfully our word of God
22:01we see the progression
22:03of the redemption
22:04of how God's done this
22:05it's through pictures
22:06and stories and events
22:07it's wonderful
22:08it's wonderful
22:11Pharaoh's another type
22:12he comes up again
22:13to Romans 9
22:13does he not
22:15hijacked by the Calvinists
22:17but it's not actually
22:18what it was
22:18he had a choice
22:19to soften his heart
22:21but the first seven times
22:23he hardened his heart
22:24so God said
22:25right
22:26you want to be that way
22:27I'll harden your heart
22:28the next three times
22:29so you can never
22:29soften that again
22:32that's the picture
22:33of the heart again
22:33a big picture
22:35in scripture
22:37ultimately our Christian
22:38walk is an issue
22:38of the heart
22:41another dominant thing
22:42in the early chapters
22:43of Hebrews
22:43when it tells us
22:44these things
22:45serve our examples
22:46the word
22:47the original
22:48back to the Greek
22:49in the word example
22:49is type
22:51these types
22:51were given you
22:52so you wouldn't
22:52make the same mistake
22:54at them
22:54yes they were delivered
22:55from Egypt
22:56but they never entered
22:57into God's rest
23:00and it uses that
23:01very troubling word
23:03the evil heart of unbelief
23:05we don't tend to think
23:07of unbelief as evil
23:08do we
23:09it is
23:12because their grumbling
23:14and their unthankfulness
23:15led to the hardening
23:17of the heart
23:17that leads to deception
23:19and that pattern
23:20you see
23:21you see in Exodus
23:22when they offered
23:23when they worshipped
23:24the golden calf
23:25they weren't thankful
23:26they didn't obey
23:27God's word
23:27on account of Moses
23:28tearing upon the
23:30mountain of the second
23:31storm of the law
23:32they started to
23:33get into deception
23:34they worshipped
23:35that wretched beast
23:36which they picked up
23:37in Egypt
23:38so the whole theme
23:38of the heart
23:39is really underpinning
23:40all these types
23:41I hope that made sense
23:43that may have been
23:43a little bit obscured
23:44in 1 Corinthians 10
23:45Paul in verse 4 and 5
23:47have just mentioned
23:49a type
23:50the rock
23:52remember the rock
23:53that Moses struck
23:55that's a type of Christ
23:57and that's why
23:58I believe
23:59Moses was banished
24:00from entering
24:01the promised land
24:02because in fact
24:02he strictly striked
24:04that type
24:05and that type
24:05was Christ
24:07many people think
24:08ouch
24:08that seems a bit harsh
24:09of God
24:10to stop that faithful
24:11man from entering
24:12heaven
24:12but
24:12he struck
24:13the type
24:14that type
24:15can be established
24:15already as Christ
24:19verse 6
24:20now these things
24:20were our ensembles
24:22to the intent
24:23we should not
24:23last after evil things
24:25as they also lusted
24:28neither be ye
24:29idolatries
24:30as for some of them
24:31as it is written
24:32the people
24:33sat down
24:33to eat and drink
24:34and rose up to play
24:35neither let us
24:36commit fornication
24:37as some of them
24:37committed
24:37and fell
24:38in one day
24:39three in twenty thousand
24:40neither let us
24:41tempt Christ
24:42as some of them
24:43also tended
24:43and were destroyed
24:44of serpents
24:45neither murmur ye
24:46as some of them
24:47also murmured
24:48and were destroyed
24:48of the destroyer
24:49now all these things
24:51happen unto them
24:51for ensembles
24:53and they are written
24:54for our admonition
24:55upon whom
24:56the end of the world
24:57are come
24:58just a few things
24:59did you pick up
24:59on a few types
25:02Paul picked up
25:03some of those types
25:04from the history
25:04of Israel
25:06and again
25:07and again
25:07he linked them
25:08to unbelief
25:11he mentions one
25:12here
25:12the brazen serpent
25:13let's go there
25:14actually
25:15let's turn to
25:16well it's numbers
25:17but let's go
25:18to the very famous
25:19verse
25:19John 3 16
25:20this is a
25:21very good example
25:23of how
25:23a passage
25:25has just been
25:26taken out of
25:27this context
25:28because we can do
25:29that
25:30because it
25:30renault
25:30John 3 16
25:32and removed
25:33from its type
25:36the back story
25:37is actually
25:37numbers 21
25:39let me
25:39let me
25:39kind of back up
25:40in John 3
25:42which gives
25:43verse 16
25:44its actual meaning
25:46verse 14
25:47of John 3
25:48and as
25:49Moses lifted up
25:50the serpent
25:50in the wilderness
25:51that's a type
25:53even so
25:54must the son of man
25:55be lifted up
25:56do you see how
25:56he just established
25:57the type
25:59he preached
25:59your remembrance
26:00numbers 21
26:01and now
26:02he inserts
26:03Christ
26:03even so
26:05must the son of man
26:06be lifted up
26:06and of course
26:07we know
26:07John takes this up
26:09later on
26:09if the son of man
26:10be lifted up
26:10he will draw the image
26:11himself
26:11do you see that type
26:13being freshed out
26:13again
26:16verse 15
26:16that whosoever
26:18believeth in him
26:18should not perish
26:19but have eternal life
26:20for God so loved the world
26:22that he gave
26:22his only begotten son
26:23that whosoever
26:24believeth in him
26:25should not perish
26:26but have everlasting life
26:27let me read verse 16
26:28as we've kind of
26:30in modern day
26:31come to understand it
26:33for God so
26:36loved the world
26:39that's not what it means
26:41really
26:42what it's saying
26:43is based on verse 13
26:44as Moses lifted up
26:45the serpent
26:45in the wilderness
26:46in this manner
26:47in this way
26:49God loved the world
26:49that he gives
26:50only begotten son
26:50that's how Christ
26:51was lifted up
26:52do you see
26:53it's so easy
26:54to remove a creature
26:55from his context
26:56and this is important
26:56because this type
26:57has been established
26:58in Numbers 21
27:00as that brazen serpent
27:01you know the story
27:02they were being
27:03bitten
27:04and some of them
27:06were dying
27:06but the remedy
27:07was simple
27:08lift up that cursed
27:09bronze serpent
27:10you'll be
27:11saved
27:12you'll be healed
27:13amen
27:15and of course
27:16the picture
27:16the type there
27:17of Christ
27:18being lifted up
27:19on the tree
27:21anyone on a tree
27:22is cursed
27:23the Bible says
27:23but he took our curse
27:25he took our shame
27:27that's the very
27:27dominant type
27:28which has been removed
27:29from the immediate context
27:30of John 3.16
27:32now I think we can
27:33read it with many O's
27:34for God so loved
27:35but that's not
27:36what it actually means
27:37yeah
27:37the context here
27:38is really important
27:39so the bronze serpent
27:40has a picture
27:41of Jesus as himself
27:43amen
27:44servants lifted up
27:45Christ was lifted up
27:47dying Israelites
27:48dying sinners
27:51looking
27:53believing
27:58you see how John
27:59uses the type
28:00and he applies it
28:01to Christ
28:02when they look
28:03to the serpent
28:04they were healed
28:04when we believe
28:06in Jesus through faith
28:07we are saved
28:08physical life
28:10eternal life
28:11these types
28:12really happened
28:13there really was
28:14serpents
28:14there really was
28:15a bronze serpent
28:16there really was
28:16the children of Israel
28:17Israel and Moses
28:18that really happened
28:19but God put that
28:21to teach us something
28:22greater
28:22that when the son of man
28:23be lifted up
28:24a picture of him
28:25on the Caribbean's cross
28:26that if we look to him
28:27through faith
28:28we'll be saved
28:32it's a very dominant type
28:33in John's thinking
28:34as well
28:35we could speak about
28:37Jonah
28:37three days
28:38and three nights
28:40amen
28:40we could speak about that
28:41you think I know
28:42where I'm going with that
28:44he is himself
28:45so I think it's in Matthew 12
28:46says
28:46as Jonah was in the belly
28:47three days
28:48so on the son of man
28:50three days
28:51and there's a picture
28:51of course
28:52there type
28:52there established
28:53which points to his
28:54death
28:54and resurrection
28:57Adam was a type
28:58Paul uses Adam
28:59as a type
29:00you know
29:01the figure of him
29:02that was to come
29:02Romans 5 14
29:04actually the whole
29:05of Romans 5
29:06speaks about Adam
29:07and his sin
29:07but the last Adam
29:09they had a victorious
29:10obedient life
29:11so those
29:12who are in Adam
29:13will die
29:14but those who are
29:15in Christ
29:16will not
29:17see another type
29:18being established there
29:19there's deliberate
29:20contrast with what
29:21the apostles do
29:22in the New Testament
29:24and the writers
29:26and again
29:26I'm just going to
29:27whip through the tabernacle
29:28I shouldn't
29:29it's a profound
29:30picture of course
29:31the tabernacle
29:32is a profound picture
29:33of how
29:33a holy God
29:36could come down
29:37and meet sinful man
29:39this is the ultimate
29:40problem isn't it
29:41Adam and Eve
29:43walked with their God
29:44they had a relationship
29:45the most normal thing
29:46for a relationship
29:47is to be face to face
29:48isn't it not
29:49and of course
29:50like Moses
29:52and like
29:54our early federal parents
29:55Adam and Eve
29:56got their sin
29:57they struggled
29:57with the invisibility
29:59of God
30:00don't we struggle
30:01with that
30:02are we not
30:03called to love God
30:04the whole heart
30:05mind and soul
30:06but we're called
30:07to have a relationship
30:08with him
30:08as one who's face to face
30:10but we can't
30:10even Moses
30:12in Exodus 33
30:13says Lord
30:14I want to show you
30:15show me your glory
30:15he says we can't
30:16you're too sinful
30:17I'm too holy
30:18but here's what I'll do
30:18I'll put you in a rock
30:19I'll pass by
30:20and even that was too much
30:24but God still yearns
30:25for this intimacy
30:28this is one of the reasons
30:29I'm very cautious
30:30about this five minutes
30:31in this prayer
30:32as a Bible
30:32which runs
30:33policy out of hell
30:34because God
30:35wants to know us
30:38do you not say
30:39in Matthew 7
30:40depart from me
30:40I knew you not
30:43it's a relationship
30:44that's not a life
30:45insurance policy
30:47and it's amazing
30:48that we can have
30:48this intimacy
30:49we had the Lord's
30:50table this morning
30:51and it's not just
30:52a remembrance
30:53until he comes
30:54there's power
30:55in the Lord's table
30:56many of you
30:56just don't do it much
30:58it's one of the items
30:59of course
30:59in the holy place
31:01Pashat in the Hebrew
31:01it's a place of intimacy
31:02almost face to face
31:04Jesus and Luke
31:06Luke's account
31:07eagerly desired
31:08to break bread
31:09on the last night
31:11so he wants
31:11to be with us again
31:12but how does
31:13the holy God
31:14come to be
31:15with his people
31:16well of course
31:16the elaborate
31:18tabernacle
31:19it's so elaborate
31:20have you read
31:21the detail on that
31:23everything's there
31:23for a reason
31:24it's all
31:24established in types
31:25we can spend weeks
31:27just on the types
31:28and the tabernacle
31:28alone
31:29the laver
31:31is that not about
31:32washing
31:36raising altar
31:38a life
31:39had to be burnt
31:40an innocent life
31:42sacrificed for us
31:44for our remission
31:45of our sins
31:46and when those types
31:47were dealt with
31:48only then
31:49could the priest
31:49go into the holy place
31:51that's the communion
31:52but
31:53you've got to deal
31:54with that stuff
31:54first
31:55those types
31:55have to be dealt with
31:57a spotless lamb
32:00and then the
32:01holy place
32:03the sweet intimacy
32:04and that's why
32:05Jesus had to come
32:06as our lamb
32:07to deal with
32:08our sin
32:09and once that's
32:10dealt with
32:11then we can have
32:12intimacy
32:13and know God
32:13and it's no wonder
32:15why John the Baptist
32:16ministry starts with
32:17repent
32:19repent
32:19you're a sinner
32:20you need to know
32:21and Jesus
32:23exactly the same
32:24repent
32:26it was too radical
32:27for the Pharisees
32:28they were so wrapped up
32:29in all these types
32:30they never saw the
32:32anti-type
32:33the fulfilment
32:34of these things
32:35they were so wrapped up
32:36in the tabernacle
32:37and the drapes
32:39and the curtains
32:40and the sacrifices
32:41and the laver
32:41and the brazen
32:42and all these things
32:43but they were doing
32:43faithfully by the time
32:44of the first century
32:45and the great temple
32:46and they were so impressed
32:47of these huge bricks
32:48they were so wrapped up
32:50they never saw
32:51the fulfilment
32:52of these things
32:53what a tragedy
32:55and that's why
32:56Jesus said
32:56in Luke 24
32:57to those two disciples
32:58oh you fools
32:59slow of heart
33:02Mark's account
33:03kind of indicates
33:03they're stubborn
33:04a bit
33:07he expected them
33:09to know
33:11he expected them
33:12to know
33:12that all these
33:13beborious
33:13and all this effort
33:15that God went to
33:15to put these types
33:16they're just shadows
33:19and of course
33:20the Pharisees
33:20never saw it
33:22they missed
33:23their fulfilment
33:24it's a tragedy
33:25isn't it
33:31praise God
33:32for dealing
33:32with sin
33:34he is our sacrifice
33:36our high priest
33:37our mediator
33:38all strong pictures
33:40in the Old Testament
33:42the mediator
33:43the day of Yom Kippur
33:44that's the time
33:45just once a year
33:48but God
33:48has fulfilled
33:49everything
33:49he mediates
33:50and intercedes
33:51day and night
33:52for us
33:52it's amazing
33:53so when we see
33:54the limitations
33:55of these shadows
33:56and types
33:56and then we see
33:57through the New Testament
33:58lens
33:59how Christ has
34:00fulfilled them all
34:02it becomes
34:03more amazing
34:04that's why
34:05saints get into
34:05the Old Testament
34:06it's wonderful
34:09Christ becomes
34:10more brilliant
34:13we could look at
34:14Isaac
34:14in Genesis 22
34:15but there's no time
34:16remember Isaac
34:19do you remember
34:20when Isaac
34:20and he would have
34:21been a young man
34:22he would have been
34:22probably in his late
34:23twenties
34:23early thirties
34:24can you imagine that
34:26he trusted his own dad
34:28we know that
34:29you can work with that
34:30with the chronology
34:30of Genesis
34:32he was going up
34:33to the mountain
34:33and Isaac looked around
34:34and said
34:34father
34:35I see the wood
34:36for the sacrifice
34:37but
34:38where is the
34:39lamb
34:40where is the
34:40sacrifice
34:41and
34:43and of course
34:44we're told
34:45Abraham said
34:46God will provide
34:47himself a sacrifice
34:49and that carries
34:50over in the
34:50Hebrew and the
34:51Greek
34:52God will provide
34:53himself
34:55a sacrifice
34:56and it was on
34:56the same mountain
34:58two thousand years
34:59later
34:59that another
35:01father
35:01would offer
35:02his own son
35:03for you and I
35:06you see the
35:06time
35:07being established
35:10now as our
35:11exodus
35:12we've spoken
35:12about that
35:13let me just
35:14end with this
35:14I'm not sure
35:15how much time
35:15I have
35:19why does
35:19typology matter
35:21and again
35:21sometimes we need
35:22a word
35:23just so we know
35:24what we're talking
35:24about
35:25and obviously
35:26when we're reading
35:26scripture
35:26we're not thinking
35:27oh there's this
35:28typology
35:28we kind of just
35:29see through the
35:30lens of Jesus
35:31and how he fulfills
35:32it
35:32but this is why
35:32it's important
35:34number one
35:34we see
35:35we see scripture
35:36for what it is
35:36we don't just
35:37pick out verses
35:38here and there
35:40because we all
35:41have our favourite
35:41verses
35:43but the other
35:43church never
35:45did that
35:45you know you
35:46remember we
35:47mentioned those
35:47at Berea
35:48they were more
35:48noble than those
35:49at Cessna
35:49because they
35:50searched the
35:50scriptures daily
35:52you've got to
35:52know your word
35:53to search the
35:54word
35:56and so they
35:57listened to the
35:57apostles
35:58and Paul commended
35:59them because they
36:00knew their word
36:01and they searched
36:01them and went
36:02through
36:02you know if you've
36:03just got a scroll
36:04and it was called
36:05by the very first
36:06line in the scroll
36:07you had to know
36:08where to go to
36:09make sure that the
36:10apostles would
36:11attain the truth
36:11you know we just
36:12jump through chapters
36:13and verses
36:13which is convenient
36:14but it's not edifying
36:16it doesn't edify us
36:17because we miss the
36:18whole panorama
36:19of how we got to
36:21those verses
36:24we speak of context
36:25don't we
36:26a text with a context
36:27is just a pretext
36:28and they tell you to
36:29go to the last chapter
36:31and the book
36:31and where it is
36:32and that's all
36:33well and good
36:33but actually
36:33if you step back
36:34with God's history
36:35you need to know
36:36the entirety
36:37of God's
36:38plan of redemption
36:40for that to truly shine
36:42and this is why
36:43it's so easy to take
36:44passages out of context
36:45because they've been
36:45removed out
36:46of where they belong
36:47I mean it'd be strange
36:48if I sent you a letter
36:50and you just
36:50whipped a head
36:52and you read
36:53the last page
36:54you know you could
36:55read anything
36:55couldn't you
36:56but we treat the bible
36:57that way don't we
36:59the verse today
37:00keeps the doctor away
37:04so typology matters
37:06it matters because
37:07it changes the way
37:08we read bible
37:09when we read the scriptures
37:10in the old testament
37:11we're looking for christ
37:14when we're reading
37:15in exodus
37:16when we see
37:17the blood being applied
37:18we say
37:19oh there's jesus
37:20when we look at the lamb
37:21we say
37:21oh there's jesus
37:22when we look at the sin
37:24which has blemished us
37:26we see how jesus
37:27paid for it
37:27we've seen jesus
37:28everywhere
37:29and that gives us
37:30a greater appreciation
37:31of what jesus
37:31has done for us
37:32and how god's
37:33redemptive story
37:34pans out
37:36it's wonderful
37:37it really is
37:38it helps us so much
37:40without understanding
37:41biblical patterns
37:42the bible can be
37:44just appears to be
37:45a collection of
37:45disconnected stories
37:46and sadly
37:47when you look at
37:48bbc and these
37:49different documentaries
37:50and a lot of christians
37:51the bible's just
37:52different stories
37:54you know
37:54sunday school
37:55there's samson
37:55we'll do nozart today
37:57we'll do goliath
37:59another day
38:00and they're disconnected
38:02and that's okay
38:03but it robs us
38:05of our richness
38:06of what god has done
38:07because his story
38:08and the way it unfolds
38:10the drama of scriptures
38:11is important how it unfolds
38:13it'll be richer
38:14wouldn't it
38:14again i think you get my point
38:16i don't want to overdo this
38:17but if we went to
38:18like a pantomime
38:19or a show
38:19or a theatre
38:20and we walked in
38:21like 10 minutes in
38:22we would have missed something
38:23and if we whipped out
38:24and then came back in
38:26at minute 13
38:27stuck around for 30 seconds
38:28and came out
38:29we'd miss things
38:31but we do tend to do
38:32that with scripture
38:33and of course
38:34biblical typology
38:35really focuses
38:36and says
38:36you know what
38:37jesus is all over the passage
38:39where is jesus in here
38:40jesus is everywhere
38:42there's a wonderful book
38:43i just forgot the author
38:44right now
38:45she writes a fantastic book
38:46and even those
38:47some of those
38:48appearing barren ones
38:49like the genealogies
38:50you ever read
38:51first chronicles
38:53chapter 9
38:53it's tough
38:55it's worthy of those names
38:57jesus is there
38:59because that establishes
39:00the actual lineage of christ
39:02and to the jew
39:03that's really important
39:04because if you can prove
39:05that jesus is who he said he is
39:07that's significant
39:08that's like matthew
39:08starts with genealogy
39:10we miss some of these things
39:13so that's why
39:15typology matters
39:18it shows us
39:19that god is sovereign
39:20over history
39:23a human author
39:24can't author this
39:26the fingertips of holy spirit
39:28are all over scripture
39:29from genesis to revelation
39:31and we know that
39:32god has inspired
39:33and preserved
39:35his word
39:36it's a wonderful book
39:37it's a living book
39:38amen
39:41only god can do that
39:44god controls the story
39:46so it's not just a merely
39:47arranging of words
39:49he arranged history
39:54it magnifies christ
39:57god's tenderness
39:58can be seen in his love
39:59because even that judgment
40:00when we
40:01messed up
40:04a type was established
40:05in genesis 3 15
40:06the first prophecy actually
40:08you know
40:09the seed of the woman
40:10that was a prophecy
40:12then it established
40:12as a type
40:13later on
40:14that's god's tenderness
40:16so right from beginning
40:17we have a god
40:18who's so cared
40:19and concerned
40:20about meeting with us
40:21and walking with us
40:23in the cooler of the day
40:23as it were
40:26he set this plan
40:27of redemption
40:27it's the greatest love
40:28story ever told
40:30he couldn't look us
40:31face to face
40:32because until we get
40:33a new body
40:33glorified bodies
40:36he can't
40:37but even so
40:38he found a way
40:39through jesus
40:39through his holy spirit
40:41to have intimacy with us
40:42i think that's amazing
40:43god is so desperate
40:44to want to commune with us
40:45he already is
40:46do you ever think about that
40:48the most natural thing
40:49for god is to create us
40:51because you know
40:51god's a trinity
40:53you can't love
40:54if you're a singular being
40:55you have nothing to love
40:58and i do believe
40:59god created humanity
41:00because god wants
41:01to extend his family
41:02i believe that
41:03i really believe that
41:04and he gave us an image
41:06unlike the beast
41:07so we can relate to god
41:09i've never seen a dog
41:11to this day
41:11look up and wonder
41:12at the stars
41:14i see humans do that
41:15something in us
41:16is our spirit
41:17which is able to commune
41:19it's wonderful
41:20the angels can't do that
41:23so who we are
41:24is really important
41:24how god made us
41:26we're made in the image
41:26of god
41:27so the story of redemption
41:29this unfolding story
41:30is important to us
41:31we need to know
41:31who we are
41:33where we started
41:34where it all went wrong
41:36and where we're going
41:39and of course
41:39the whole story of redemption
41:42will come to a great
41:44final climax
41:46none of you have
41:47silly opinions about
41:48oh the sun will burn out
41:49and a big eco
41:50and all this sort of
41:51it's nonsense
41:52and all this
41:53creed-hugging agenda
41:54today is very poignant
41:56because of harvest
41:57Genesis 8.22 tells me
41:59so long as the earth is
42:00there will be hot and cold
42:01and winter
42:01and harvest
42:03and all that
42:03I don't worry about it
42:05I think we should be good stewards
42:06but I don't worry about it
42:07God has given us
42:08so much in his word
42:10and topology
42:11and seeing these
42:12pictures and patterns
42:13in the old testament
42:15and fulfilment in you
42:16gives us confidence
42:17that the timeline
42:19is moving along
42:20God is in control
42:21there will be a great
42:23climax
42:25and remember
42:26like prophecy
42:27there can be
42:27like a tertiary
42:28application too
42:30I'd only go down
42:31rather hard
42:32just super quick
42:33of course
42:33Daniel 7 introduces
42:35the man of lawlessness
42:37Daniel 8 speaks about
42:38the abomination of desolation
42:40there really was
42:41an abomination of desolation
42:42the Maccabees take care of that
42:43but there's a tertiary application
42:44there really will be
42:46another one
42:47Jesus I believe
42:48eludes to Matthew 24
42:50when you see
42:52don't worry about
42:52the wars
42:53the rumours of wars
42:54and famine
42:54don't let them trouble you
42:55but when you see
42:56the abomination of desolation
42:57is speaking for Daniel
42:58then that's the tricky point
42:59now wake up
43:00so history is going up
43:02it is climaxing to that point
43:04so when we understand
43:06the whole of scripture
43:07as a moving along
43:08a greater picture
43:10is being revealed
43:11through Christ
43:12it gives us confidence
43:13that yeah
43:14there's only one God
43:15and he's got our backs
43:18he really has
43:19the key thing is
43:20that you've got to be
43:21in Christ
43:23we've got to be right
43:25with God
43:27his blood has to be
43:28applied to our lives
43:29and this is really important
43:31I'm really convinced
43:32especially some of the
43:33warnings in Hebrews
43:34that Hebrews tell us
43:35we have to check
43:36through each other
43:37every day
43:39lest an evil heart
43:41of unbelief creeps in
43:43isn't it easy
43:44just to get a heart up
43:46a nasty comment
43:47by somebody
43:49hey somebody's just
43:50cutting off in traffic
43:51the heart's like that
43:53so we have to keep
43:54a soft heart
43:55that's another type
43:56that's the good ground
43:57let's keep our hearts
43:59soft together
43:59amen
43:59that was a little
44:00diversion
44:01but I think
44:02an important one
44:02so typology
44:03magnifies Christ
44:07and finally
44:08and we'll be brief
44:09here on this point
44:12really a summation
44:15the shadows lead us
44:16to Christ
44:16and I just want to read
44:17this
44:17it will be like
44:18two minutes
44:20imagine walking
44:20through the Old Testament
44:21carrying a lamp
44:24you see the blood
44:25of the Passover
44:25there is Christ
44:27you see the man
44:28affording from heaven
44:29there is a shadow
44:30of Christ
44:31you see the water
44:32flowing from the rock
44:33there is Christ
44:34you see the high priest
44:35entering the holy
44:36photos
44:36there is Christ
44:38you see the sacrifice
44:39burning upon the altar
44:40there is Christ
44:41you see Isaac
44:42walking up the mountain
44:42you see Jonah
44:43emerging after three days
44:44you see David
44:45defeating Israel's arm
44:46and you see the tabernacle
44:47standing among God's people
44:48again and again
44:49the shadows whisper
44:50someone greater
44:52is coming
44:53then one day
44:54beside the Jordan
44:55John sees a man
44:56walking towards him
44:57and suddenly
44:58centuries of sacrifice
44:59blood and expectation
45:01converge
45:02in one declaration
45:03behold the Lamb of God
45:05which take away
45:06the sin of the world
45:07the shadow
45:09has met the substance
45:12the pattern
45:13has met its fulfilment
45:14the promise
45:15has met the person
45:16and his name
45:17is Jesus Christ
45:18Hallelujah
45:20Amen
45:21Amen
45:21God puts in a mysterious way
45:27his wonders to perform
45:31He glances his footsteps in the sea
45:37and cries upon the storm
45:41deep in unfathomable night
45:48of ever-failing skill
45:52He treasures up his bright designs
45:58and works his sovereign mill
46:03He fearful says
46:07fresh courage
46:09take
46:09the clouds
46:11ye so much dread
46:14God be with mercy
46:18and shall wait
46:20with blessings
46:22on your head
46:25Judge not the Lord
46:29thy feeble sense
46:31but trust him
46:33for his grace
46:36behind the frowning providence
46:42he hides a smiling face
46:47His purpose else
46:51will ripen fast
46:53unfolding every act
46:58The bold may have a bitter taste
47:03but sweet will be the fun
47:09Grind the belief
47:12he's shown to her
47:15and stand his work in vain
47:19God is his own interpreter
47:24and he will make it great
47:30and he will make it better
