00:53Well, welcome to you, everyone who's here this evening.
00:56James chapter 3, verse 13.
01:00Who is wise and understanding among you?
01:03Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.
01:09But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
01:16This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
01:22For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
01:28But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and
01:38good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
01:43Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
01:50We are part of the church of the living God.
01:55The church was a mystery.
01:58That mystery was revealed to Paul, and he speaks about it in Ephesians chapter 3.
02:03The mystery which was hidden in God in times past has now been revealed to me, he said.
02:09It's a mystery that no one understood.
02:10A mystery is something that no one does understand unless it has been revealed.
02:15And the church was a mystery, which is now no longer a mystery.
02:19But the church is the vehicle by which man is made right, or not made right, we're made right in
02:28Christ Jesus.
02:29But the church helps us to become educated and mature in Christ.
02:36I was amazed the other day, I saw something on YouTube about, you don't need to go to church.
02:46And I thought, I've never seen that before.
02:48And I looked on the post, and there are a bunch of these things saying, seven reasons why you don't
02:56need to go to church.
02:58And I started to listen to it, and I closed it down, because it was partially true, but they're taking
03:04things out of context.
03:05And so it was, well, it was a waste of my time.
03:09But that is what is happening in the world.
03:11You don't need to go to church.
03:13You do need to go to church.
03:15Church is one of the reasons why Jesus came.
03:20In Matthew, he said, I'm going to build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
03:27The church is here to stay, whether we are on earth or whether we are in heaven.
03:31If we are in heaven, we are going to be worshipping him as well as we are doing here.
03:38But we are called to come out from the world and be separate, and to do things the way he
03:42wants us to do them.
03:44He wouldn't have told us and spoken and written about the church if it was not necessary.
03:49We are told not to forsake the gathering of the saints in Hebrews chapter 10.
03:54If we gather, where are we going to gather if there is no church to gather?
04:01In the book of Acts, they gathered from house to house, and the church grew.
04:07But still, the church grew.
04:09The church grew because they held to the meetings that had been given to them,
04:15apostles' doctrine, breaking of bread, fellowship, and prayer.
04:21They followed those meetings, and the Lord added to the church, such as were being saved,
04:26indicating that he approved of what they were doing.
04:28And so the church grew, and it grew against all odds,
04:33and it grew against all the actions that were brought up against it.
04:37But here we read in James chapter 3, the wisdom that in verse 17, the wisdom that is from above.
04:46Now, verse 17, and I'm going to come back to this again later.
04:51There are about seven items here, which are basic principles for the church.
04:58There's wisdom, well, there's purity, pure.
05:03Then it's peaceable, it's gentle, it's willing to yield, full of mercy, good fruits, partiality, without hypocrisy.
05:11Those qualities are in the church.
05:14Now, who is the church if it is not you and I?
05:18Believers who are supposed to be able to exhibit all these different qualities.
05:26You'll notice that when we started reading, we started in verse 13,
05:33the heading above here is heavenly versus demonic wisdom.
05:38We need wisdom to be able to know what we are doing.
05:42Now, to have an idea of wisdom, in Proverbs chapter 1 and verse 2,
05:49it says,
05:49The purpose of the Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel,
05:53to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding.
05:59Verse 3 says,
06:00To receive wisdom and to know justice, judgment, and equity.
06:07Chapter 2 and verse 6 says,
06:10The Lord gives wisdom.
06:11From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
06:15Verse 7 of chapter 2 goes on and says,
06:19He stores up sound wisdom for the upright,
06:21and there's a shield to those who walk uprightly.
06:25And verse 9, it says,
06:29Then you will understand righteousness, justice, equity, and every good path.
06:34Now, what is wisdom, and what is knowledge?
06:41Is wisdom the same as knowledge, or is it different to knowledge?
06:46The Lord gives us knowledge.
06:49Knowledge is learning about things.
06:52You have the knowledge to be able to do things,
06:56but you need wisdom to be able to activate the knowledge that you have.
07:00So, it's two different, what would you say,
07:05two different branches of the same tree.
07:07Knowledge that you need first,
07:09and then wisdom to use what you have earned the knowledge in.
07:13So, what we need to do is exercise the wisdom that God has given us
07:18in the word that he has given us.
07:21And if we're talking about the church which we are tonight,
07:24it's something that the Lord has ordained to be there for the believers to use
07:33for their edification and their upbuilding.
07:38We need to know who we are, and what we are, and why we are.
07:43And we need to apply the wisdom that has been given to us.
07:47Now, to do that, we have to understand who Christ is and what Christ is.
07:53He came as the Son of God.
07:55He came as an example.
07:56The Jews expected him to come as the conquering king
08:00to just overthrow the Romans
08:04and then bring them back to the land that they thought they had,
08:08which they were in, but only by default
08:11because they came back after having been kicked out by the Lord
08:15because of all the idolatry and all the bad things that they'd done
08:18through the times that they had been there.
08:20Now they're there again, waiting for the Messiah to come.
08:24He comes, and they didn't recognize him
08:26because they didn't know the scriptures.
08:27Part of our job, though, is to try to understand the scriptures
08:31that we might be able to gain the wisdom or the knowledge
08:34and then apply the wisdom to the knowledge that we have to add to it
08:39to be able to fulfill the works that we need to do.
08:42But the wisdom that we have been given in the Word of God
08:47is to be pure.
08:50To be pure in Psalm 119 and 140,
08:57the Word that we have been given is pure.
09:00The instructions that we have been given is pure.
09:04What we have been given is there's no impurity in it.
09:10If there was any impurity, there would be corruption, wickedness,
09:14depravity, immorality, and lewdness in the church.
09:18That is what is impure.
09:20There is none of that in the church.
09:22And if anyone is found slipping because we are still in the flesh
09:26or not altogether purified or maturing in the Lord
09:36and we find ourselves slipping in these sort of things,
09:40well, then we have to ask that God may clear us and give us wisdom
09:45because the church is made up of living bodies.
09:48It's not an entity.
09:49It's not a building with bricks in it,
09:52which once you've placed in order that they never move again.
09:56The church is built up of living bricks,
09:59we are told in the book of Peter.
10:00We are living bricks which is being built up.
10:03The problem with a living brick is that these things are mobile
10:07and they tend to move
10:09and they tend to have their own thoughts
10:11and their own wills and their own ways.
10:14But we need to understand the fact that Christ is building his church
10:18and he's placed us in the church to learn to be submissive to the word of God
10:22and ultimately to one another
10:24to be able to have compassion with each other
10:27with the understanding that we have
10:29that we might be able to grow in maturity in the Lord.
10:35I haven't once read yet about mature Christians
10:40to the point that we are not needing teaching.
10:45Everyone needs teaching.
10:47We have come into this world for a purpose and a reason
10:51and that is to serve the Lord
10:52and the only way we can serve the Lord
10:54is by the way that he wants us to
10:58with his sanctioning
11:00because if we do not do it the way that he wants it to do
11:03we're doing it under our own ability
11:05and it's not going to be able to produce any fruit at all.
11:10So the church has to be pure.
11:12It has to be first of all pure beyond any impurities in verse 17.
11:18The wisdom that from above is pure.
11:21That is the wisdom that we speak of the word of God.
11:24There is no uncleanness.
11:26There is no unethicalness in it
11:29but it is pure.
11:30It is clean.
11:31When you purify gold,
11:33gold gets refined in the furnaces.
11:38We hadn't quite left school
11:39and we were sent up to the refineries on the Rand
11:44in the Transvaal
11:46and we went to the gold mines
11:49and we went into the refineries
11:51and we watched them refining the gold
11:53and now they had these huge, massive vats.
11:58You had to wear glasses
11:59because it was so bright.
12:01The heat that was coming off the gold
12:02in these vats
12:05and when they decanted it
12:07they decanted it into a smaller container
12:09that a couple of men could handle
12:11and they poured that into ingot moulds
12:14and we watched it happening
12:15and we watched them taking off all the scum
12:17off the top of the gold
12:18until it was pure and glistening.
12:21Revelation speaks about streets of pure gold
12:24almost clear and transparent
12:26and when you looked at that glistening molten gold
12:31it almost looked like it was transparent as well.
12:34It was quite something to see
12:35and I still remember how that looked.
12:38But that is what he's wanting us to be,
12:40to be pure.
12:41And the only way that we can become pure
12:44is if we get refined
12:46and the only way we can become refined
12:49is if we submit to the Word of God
12:52as it is presented
12:53in one means or another
12:55whether it is by a preacher
12:56or whether it is by somebody reading to you
12:59or you reading yourself
13:00but then applying yourself to
13:02the teachings in the Word of God.
13:05So we need to be pure
13:06the first of all.
13:08Then the second one, he says
13:10we need to be peaceable.
13:12Peaceable.
13:13Romans chapter 12 and verse 18 says
13:18as much as it is possible with you
13:21live peaceably with all men.
13:24So don't look for antagonism
13:29if you can avoid it.
13:32Don't willingly go out of your way
13:34to be antagonistic with somebody.
13:38And if somebody is antagonistic with you
13:42we'll then laugh and turn away
13:44but don't respond as I used to respond
13:47with trying to respond
13:48in a like temper
13:50as what was brought to me.
13:52We need to be peaceable.
13:54Jesus was peaceable as well
13:55in all the ways he did.
13:57They could never accuse him
13:59of being antagonistic.
14:03All he did was speak the truth
14:04to the Pharisees
14:06and to the crowds about him.
14:08And even though the truth was painful
14:10he still told it
14:11in many many ways
14:12and in different ways.
14:14Namely one of them was
14:16well you need to be born again
14:17and if you're not born again
14:18you're going to hell.
14:20You know how often do we say
14:21directly to the person
14:22well if you're not born again
14:23you're going to hell.
14:24I don't like saying that
14:26and I don't know how many of us do.
14:28But that is the option
14:30and the choice we have.
14:31We either have heaven
14:32or we have hell.
14:33The choice is before us
14:34when our time ends on this earth.
14:36But so we need to be peaceable.
14:39We also need to be gentle.
14:42The opposite of peace
14:43just to give an idea
14:45of the characteristics of us
14:47if we are peaceable
14:48we're not going to be belligerent
14:50and we're not going to be aggressive
14:52we're not going to be hostile
14:54and we're not going to be contentious
14:56or unfriendly.
14:59If we are any of those things
15:00well then we're not peaceable.
15:03We have another spirit
15:05coming up in and with us.
15:07That's the direct opposite.
15:09I've taken these
15:10and I've got the opposite
15:12of these qualities
15:13that the Bible speaks about
15:15in the church.
15:16The third one that is spoken about here
15:19is gentle.
15:21Opposite to harshness,
15:23roughness,
15:24brutality,
15:26mean
15:26and hostile.
15:27We need to be gentle.
15:30And if we are gentle
15:31well
15:33that sort of
15:35puts a damper on anger
15:38because if somebody accuses you
15:40of something
15:41and you answer in a like manner
15:43well that just fuels
15:44the flames of discontent
15:48and
15:50it just breaks down
15:52any possibility of a relationship.
15:55But if you are gentle with the person
15:57it somehow
15:59just dampens their ardor
16:01for a fight
16:01and they will
16:02either turn away
16:04in disgust
16:04and walk away
16:05or else they will just stand
16:07and look
16:07with nothing else
16:08to say for themselves.
16:10Gentleness
16:11is vital.
16:13It is opposite
16:13to harshness,
16:15roughness
16:15and brutality.
16:16These are pillars
16:17that the church
16:18is actually built on
16:19and those pillars
16:20are the
16:22characteristics
16:23and the nature
16:24of the Lord Jesus Christ.
16:27we need to be
16:28willing to yield.
16:30In other words
16:31we need to be reasonable.
16:33Listen to what the arguments are.
16:35Have an understanding
16:37of where the person
16:38is coming from
16:39and give him
16:41a reasonable answer.
16:43We are told in the book
16:45of
16:451 Peter chapter 3
16:47that we
16:48always need to be ready
16:49to give an answer
16:51to those
16:52who ask us
16:53a reason
16:53for the hope
16:54that is within us
16:55with fear
16:56and trembling
16:57lest we
16:58slip
16:59and slide.
17:01We always need
17:02to be
17:02ready
17:04with a reasonable
17:05answer.
17:06I once asked
17:07a sister in the Lord
17:08many, many, many
17:08years ago
17:12how do you know
17:14you're saved
17:14I think I said.
17:17And she said
17:17because I know.
17:19I said
17:20well
17:20can you give me
17:21any explanation?
17:23And she said
17:23no I just know
17:24I don't know
17:25how I'm saved
17:26but I think
17:26I'm saved.
17:27And that was
17:28the only answer
17:29that I could
17:29get out of her.
17:31I couldn't
17:31I asked her
17:32other questions
17:33I can't remember
17:33what they were
17:34but it was
17:35a
17:36it was a
17:37it was a
17:37conversation
17:38that was going
17:39nowhere.
17:40But we need
17:40to be reasonable
17:41people.
17:42We need to know
17:43why we're in church.
17:45we need to know
17:47where we would be
17:48if we are not
17:49in church.
17:50And we need
17:51to understand
17:51when we're giving
17:52a reason
17:53for the hope
17:53that we have
17:54within us
17:54we need to
17:55approach it
17:56from the angle
17:58that your
17:59antagonist
18:00is approaching
18:01you with.
18:03So put yourself
18:04in his boots
18:06and give an answer
18:07to him
18:08which he can
18:09understand.
18:10If you're a
18:11tradesman
18:11then work at it
18:12from a tradesman's
18:13point of view.
18:14If you're a
18:15CEO
18:15then try and
18:16use a CEO's
18:17point of view
18:18as well.
18:19In other words
18:20standing in his
18:21shoes
18:21looking at you
18:22trying to get
18:22a reasonable
18:23answer
18:24a logical
18:25answer.
18:26We have
18:28to use
18:28logic.
18:29If we do
18:30not use
18:30logic
18:31well then
18:32we're not
18:33being wise.
18:34People
18:35understand
18:35logic.
18:37What is the
18:37purpose of us
18:38upon this
18:39earth?
18:40You ask
18:41that of people
18:42nowadays
18:42which I'm
18:43asking them
18:43a lot
18:44and none
18:44of them
18:45have got
18:45an answer.
18:46And when
18:46I do
18:47give them
18:47an answer
18:48that we
18:48are here
18:48to be
18:49tested
18:50by God
18:51for God
18:51and one
18:52day we
18:53are going
18:53to give
18:53an answer
18:54to God
18:54well that's
18:55the end
18:55of the
18:55conversation
18:56because they
18:57don't want
18:57to hear
18:58anymore
18:58even though
18:59they know
19:00that they're
19:00not going
19:00to be able
19:01to give
19:01the answer.
19:02They don't
19:03want to ask
19:03the reason
19:04why and
19:05how would
19:05they give
19:06an answer
19:06but they
19:07turn away
19:07because I
19:08had a
19:09reason
19:09behind
19:10the question
19:11they were
19:12able to
19:12understand
19:13it.
19:14One of
19:14my
19:14colleagues
19:15at work
19:15he asked
19:17me a
19:17question
19:17one day
19:18the question
19:19ended up
19:20with about
19:20half an
19:21hour of
19:21answers
19:22from
19:24Abraham
19:24Moses
19:25and then
19:26to Abraham
19:26because the
19:27questions
19:27kept coming
19:28and eventually
19:29he said
19:29I've got
19:30nothing more
19:30to say
19:30to you
19:31and I
19:31don't want
19:31to hear
19:32anything
19:32more from
19:32you
19:33and he
19:33walked
19:34off
19:34and that
19:34was the
19:35end
19:35of it
19:35but you
19:36know
19:36it was
19:37enough
19:37to satisfy
19:38him
19:40that the
19:41lives that
19:42we are
19:42living in
19:43Christ
19:44he didn't
19:44want to
19:45have anything
19:45to do
19:45with it
19:46and since
19:47then we're
19:48not antagonistic
19:49we still
19:50work together
19:50but he
19:53even asked
19:53me to pray
19:54for him
19:54the other
19:54day
19:55and I
19:55said
19:55well I've
19:55been doing
19:56that all
19:56the time
19:56and he
19:57walked away
19:57again
19:58with no
19:58answer
19:59for it
19:59but who
20:01knows what
20:01might happen
20:02but reason
20:02is very
20:03very important
20:04and to have
20:05the reason
20:06we have to
20:06have the
20:07knowledge
20:07if we don't
20:09have the
20:09knowledge
20:09we can't
20:10apply
20:10wisdom
20:11to it
20:12to understand
20:13the question
20:14from the
20:14person
20:15from his
20:15perspective
20:16and to be
20:17able to
20:17give him
20:17a satisfactory
20:18answer
20:19which is
20:19vital to
20:20be able
20:20to wisely
20:22put the
20:23gospel
20:23across to
20:24people
20:24into a
20:25language
20:26or into
20:26the
20:26situations
20:27which they
20:28are coming
20:28from
20:29and so
20:30we need
20:31to have
20:32that
20:32reasonableness
20:33the willing
20:35to yield
20:35to listening
20:36to him
20:37from his
20:37point of
20:38view
20:38and putting
20:39yourself
20:40in his
20:40point of
20:41view
20:41from his
20:41angle
20:42and then
20:44taking the
20:45argument
20:45through to
20:46him
20:46in a
20:47manner
20:47that he
20:48can
20:48understand
20:48the
20:50opposite
20:50of
20:50reasonable
20:51is
20:51it's
20:51not
20:52stubborn
20:52it's
20:53yielding
20:54the
20:55opposite
20:55to
20:55that
20:56is
20:57quarreling
20:57the
20:58world's
20:59wisdom
20:59is
20:59the way
21:00that
21:00Babylon
21:00does
21:01it
21:01you'll
21:01fight
21:02with
21:02one
21:02another
21:02you'll
21:03force
21:03your
21:04view
21:05upon
21:06him
21:06and
21:07he'll
21:07go away
21:07disgusted
21:08and not
21:09happy
21:09with what
21:10you're
21:10wanting
21:10him
21:11to
21:11understand
21:12so
21:13the
21:13opposite
21:14of
21:14yieldedness
21:15is
21:16resist
21:16oppose
21:17fight
21:18and
21:18withstand

21:21is not
21:21a good
21:21answer
21:22so we
21:23need to
21:23be
21:23willing
21:23to
21:24yield
21:24there
21:25needs
21:25to
21:25be
21:25mercy
21:26mercy

21:28good
21:28fruits
21:28the
21:29opposite
21:30of
21:30mercy
21:31is
21:31cruelty
21:32harshness
21:33mercilessness

21:34ruthlessness
21:35we need
