00:00Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a major political boost just days
00:06before a closely contested presidential runoff. The country's Senate has a proposal to shorten
00:12the working week to a maximum of 40 hours. The vote comes as Lula tries to overturn a
00:192.2 million vote deficit against his rival Flavio Bolsonaro.
00:26The government estimates that reducing the working week to a maximum of 40 hours would
00:31benefit more than 37 million workers in the country. Bolsonaro, who previously opposed the
00:36change, reversed course on Tuesday, saying more than 70 percent of the general population of
00:42Brazilian workers supported it. Brazilians will vote in a runoff on October 25th, after the first
00:48round of the country's general elections failed to see any candidate secure more than 50 percent of
00:52the vote. The reform will be phased in over 14 months, with the new working hours taking effect after the
00:59election.
