00:00I want to get into Call Your Shot Thursday because the Niners look like the best team in football.
00:05The numbers support that.
00:06They're 5-0, top-five defense, top-five offense.
00:10I spoke with Jennifer Lee Chanby, our friend that covers the Niners for NBC Sports Bay Area.
00:15She and Matt Mayoko do a wonderful job.
00:16And I was like, where's the weakness?
00:20And she said going into the year there was a lot of questions about San Fran's D-line.
00:25But they have this rookie, a fourth-round rookie out of Oklahoma, Boomer Sooner.
00:31And this kid is giving them just what they need right now.
00:35And it helps when you have stud linebackers and you've got studs on the back end.
00:38Well, Greenlaw's out, right?
00:40He's out for Monday night, yeah.
00:42This kid, Grayson Halton, I believe, is a rookie D-lineman out of Oklahoma.
00:47They've gotten three sacks out of Keyon White.
00:49But they just have a lot of production rushing the quarterback, going the whole way down.
00:54Like, going down the roster.
00:57I think everybody knows about Kittle.
00:59Everybody knows about Mike Evans.
01:01Everybody knows about Christian McCaffrey.
01:02Everybody knows the level of play Brock Purdy is delivering right now.
01:08This Niners team is loaded.
01:11You're going to have to play your best.
01:13Yeah.
01:13Who's got to play their best?
01:15Call your shot.
01:16Let's start with Gil in North Carolina.
01:18What's up, Gil?
01:19Hey, guys.
01:20How are y'all?
01:20Good, man.
01:21What's happening, Gil?
01:22Cool.
01:23Long-time fan.
01:25Obviously, miserable week last week.
01:26But I think it's David Blau.
01:28I feel like the turning point of the game last week was we didn't have an answer to that zero
01:33blitz.
01:34And we showed San Fran exactly what to do to stop our offense.
01:39I think if we could have stopped that early, we wouldn't have come to the end of the game and
01:46having to kick a field goal in overtime.
01:47I mean, if we not could have stopped it, but if we had an answer for it early.
01:51And I think, obviously, San Fran has seen the tape.
01:55So, they're going to do the same thing when it matters.
01:57It's third and long or fourth down or whatever it is.
02:01And if we don't have an answer, it's going to be a long game.
02:05Well, I mean, he has a point, Derek, because what people do, people will learn from what you couldn't stop
02:10before.
02:11And they bring it.
02:12So, you know, as far as I'm concerned, like, it's kind of hard for me to give you one person.
02:17But can I give you a group of people?
02:20Sure.
02:20And I'm going on both sides of the ball.
02:22Okay.
02:23O-line, D-line.
02:24I'm pulling the Jeff on this one.
02:26I feel our offensive line has to be better in the run game because we've got to establish a run.
02:32We have to have long.
02:33They ran the ball better against the Giants than that in a couple weeks.
02:36We have to have long, sustained drives against this football team because you want their offense on the damn sideline.
02:42And defensively, who's led by a man who's almost 40 years old in Trent,
02:47the dude is still probably as good an athlete as anybody playing in the league, not just offensive linemen.
02:53Ballerinas.
02:53We've got to find a way to put pressure on Purdy.
02:57You know, and if you don't get pressure, you've got to get hands up there because he's releasing the ball
03:00quick as hell.
03:01One of the most fun things in my young career was getting to know Trent Williams,
03:05getting to watch Trent Williams' footwork is just unbelievable.
03:09And you're not wrong, B.
03:10I mean, the Giants scored fourth and eight from the 17, and they scored a touchdown to cut it to
03:1827-20.
03:19Washington got the ball with 7-20 remaining.
03:22You know what you do if you go on a long field goal drive there?
03:25You win the game.
03:27Yeah.
03:277-20 remaining in the fourth quarter.
03:29You go on a nine-play, 50-yard drive and get three, you probably win that game.
03:35You know what they did?
03:37They ran three plays for minus four yards and punted.
03:40You have to move the ball.
03:43And when we're talking about offense and then drives and offensive line and stuff like that,
03:49it's not always just about the end result, but at least deplete some of the clock.
03:57That was three plays in probably how many minutes?
04:00A one?
04:01One minute, 20 seconds?
04:03So they somehow did run a – they got the ball at 7-20.
04:05They didn't punt until 4-56.
04:08Okay, so two minutes of time.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Two minutes and something.
04:12Another two, three minutes would have helped a little bit.
04:15Sure.
04:16Just one more first down.
04:18Yes.
04:21You're not wrong, though.
04:22This has to be a complete better team effort to get this thing done.
04:27Let's go to T in Orlando.
04:29T, call your shot, buddy.
04:31Hey, what's up, fellas?
04:32What's up, man?
04:32Love your show.
04:33Love it, love it, love it.
04:35I have one serious and then one half-serious impact player.
04:42Obviously, it's J.D. 5, right?
04:44Like, he's the end-all, be-all for our team, right?
04:47He has to be old-school caliber, Pro Bowl caliber player for the remainder of the season for us to
04:54have any real shot to do anything significant.
04:57My half is having Mikey Sanistreo in street clothes on the sidelines so he cannot hurt us when it counts.
05:07I wouldn't expect that to happen, but I hear you.
05:11Yeah.
05:14Listen, if you get Amos back, I wouldn't expect street clothes, but it does get a little more interesting.
05:21It does.
05:22We'll get our first, at least, look if Amos could be back today.
05:30I don't necessarily expect it, but that's not because I know or don't know anything.
05:36I'm just done expecting much with Trey until I see him back out on the field.
05:41Yep.
05:43But, yeah, dude, you need a lot more from a lot of people.
05:47Let's go to our guy, Toothpick, down in Texas.
05:49What up, pick?
05:50Call your shot.
05:52Hey, what's good?
05:53Thanks for taking my call.
05:56I'm calling my shot with the offensive line, right?
05:59Hey, and I know this is usually Jeff's bit where he takes a whole unit, but these guys got to
06:04play well.
06:05We see J.D. Fowl starting to play with a lot of confidence, but you give them time to shred
06:09this 49er secondary with his arm,
06:13and then when these change up there and they start playing man, he starts having fun.
06:16He starts hitting them with his legs.
06:18I'm starting to get sewer-crazy vibes from Trey Amos, and I don't like that.
06:26Thanks for taking my call, man.
06:27I appreciate y'all.
06:30Sewa's interesting.
06:31What's the sewer-crazy vibes?
06:32I'm trying to – the injury stuff you mean?
06:36Yeah, I mean, Amos is in his second year.
06:39I'm pulling up Sewa's games.
06:41I don't – I mean, I guess as a rookie he played 11, which is probably roughly what Trey played.
06:47Then he missed – it's hard to – I don't know that I agree with that comp,
06:53because they're, one, very different players.
06:55Trey clearly has a position.
06:57He's a boundary corner.
06:58Sewa was like this hybrid linebacker safety.
07:03And Sewa had some significant personal life stuff go on.
07:07And then he made Bruce Allen mad, and Bruce put him on the exempt list.
07:11Like, there was a lot going on there that I don't think is at all comparable to a guy that
07:15has a clear position
07:17and is dealing with an injury.
07:18Now, he broke the leg.
07:19Now he's got an ankle.
07:20Whatever else is going on, shin, calf, I don't know.
07:24But, like, I don't like the comp.
07:27But they're both second-round players you haven't gotten much from through two years.
07:30So, if you want to say that, I guess I get it.
07:33800-636-1067.
07:35800-636-1067.
07:39Call your shot Thursday.
07:41Our guy Shane in Tennessee.
07:42What's up, Shane?
07:44Hey, what's up, all the ladies.
07:45J.P., B. Mitch.
07:47Talk to the morning to you guys.
07:48What's up, man?
07:50Hey, it's got to be the coaching staff.
07:51The coaching staff has got to step up.
07:53But if you want to go to a player, it's got to be J.D.
07:57He's got to come out after this episode that we had and be the leader that he is.
08:02And I think he's going to – look, he had a hell of a game on Sunday.
08:05So, I don't know why everybody's blaming J.D.
08:07You've got to blame the leadership.
08:09They should have put him in a better position.
08:11And once again, like I said, if it wasn't for number five, it would have been a blowout.
08:15Let's just call it what it is.
08:17The man went out there and gave him everything there was.
08:19So, if you put in the seventh-round quarterback, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.
08:27But everybody needs to get off of J.D. and blame the leadership that put him in there, right?
08:32The leadership should have told him what to do.
08:35He's just trying to do his job, get him down there in the position.
08:38Long story short, it's the coaching staff.
08:40Hey, look, this is a must-win for this coaching staff because there's a bye week coming out.
08:45And if they get blown out, what to say there ain't changes coming?
08:49Thanks, guys.
08:50It's a good call, man.
08:50It's a good call, and it's a fair question.
08:52If they get blown out, I don't know what it looks like, frankly.
08:55I still think Harris is a patient fellow.
08:58You've got to remember, Josh Harris was the owner of the Sixers during the Trust the Process days.
09:04Like, that team was awful for years.
09:09I mean, how bad were the Sixers for how long?
09:11For a long damn time.
09:15And what was the thing?
09:16What was the motto they had?
09:18Trust the process.
09:18Trust the process.
09:20I'm going to try to pull the Sixers' records during that time.
09:25Like, I think Harris, WC, if you confirm this for me, Harris bought the Sixers, I want to say, 2010
09:30or 2011.
09:32Okay?
09:32And the Sixers, during that time, I don't know when, like, the Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid drafts were.
09:41But I know in 2013 they went 19-63.
09:44In 2014 they went 18-64.
09:472015 they went 10-72.
09:50And they went down.
09:50I believe that was, like, the real Trust the Process era.
09:54This dude was the owner for that and had the fortitude to go through that.
09:59And you could argue if it worked or didn't, that's a different conversation.
10:02But, like, he doesn't strike me as the type of dude that's going to make rash decisions.
10:07Yeah, I'm with that.
10:08And he has said before, during the end of the Ron era, I don't like to pay people not to
10:13work.
10:14So, like, the other thing, I don't know if you agree with this.
10:20It's a self-preservation league.
10:21I've said it a zillion times.
10:22We see that happen.
10:24Dan Quinn has built a coaching staff where there's not an obvious replacement for him should you get rid of
10:30him.
10:31Anthony Lynn is the name, but he's not a coordinator.
10:33He's your run game coordinator, assistant head coach.
10:35Been a head coach, though.
10:36Lynn has been a head coach.
10:37So, you can go to a Lynn.
10:38Like, I get that.
10:39But you don't have necessarily a coordinator you're going to instantly promote.
10:43And the other part of this, if Harris is going to lean on Peters, one, I think Peters and Quinn
10:49have a legit, genuine, trust relationship.
10:53Two, if you're AP, do you want the head coach gone?
10:57So, then if you really limp to the finish line over the last ten, where's everybody looking then?
11:04Because they're not looking at Anthony Lynn.
11:06They're looking at the GM.
11:09So, if you're, Anthony, if you're out of Peters, I don't think you're in a hurry for DQ to go
11:13anywhere.
11:14Did they ever cross paths in San Fran?
11:16No.
11:17I don't believe they had ever been on a staff together.
11:19Okay.
11:20I could be wrong on that, but I don't believe that to me.
11:22Because DQ was in Seattle.
11:24You're talking about Anthony Lynn and, was he ever at San Francisco?
11:29Yes.
11:30I'm talking about he and Peters.
11:31Yeah, Lynn was in San Francisco, I believe, when they went to the Super Bowl and lost.
11:38I will confirm that right now, assuming they'll list assistant jobs.
11:46I got to double check where Lynn was, because he was OC in Detroit in 21.
11:51I think he was then in San Francisco.
11:55It's a very interesting question.
11:59Anthony Lynn, 49ers coach.
12:01Anthony Lynn served as assistant head coach and running backs coach for the 49ers in 22 and 23 before he
12:07came to Washington in 24.
12:09Adam Peters was certainly in San Francisco in 22 and 23 before he came to Washington.
12:13Yeah, so I was asking that question, too, because you never know.
12:17Yeah, that's a relevant question.
12:18Yeah.
12:18Rudy is in West Virginia.
12:20Rudy, call your shot, bro.
12:22Hey, what's up, guys?
12:23I would like to say the special teams, man.
12:26The special teams need to step up.
12:28Tressway, Luke McCaffrey.
12:30Those guys need to step up.
12:32I mean, you know, as of lately, I haven't seen Tressway just give the other team more advantage with short
12:39punts.
12:41And, like, I was at the Giants game, and, oh, man, it wasn't a good look.
12:45And I guess that's also another reason why the Giants were able to, you know, get more plays in.
12:51But I would say the special teams, man.
12:54I hope they step up and give us a good win.
12:56I'll say this.
12:57I talked to Tress after the London game, and he was pretty frustrated.
13:00One punt he had against the Colts where he was hoping to flip the field and just didn't get all
13:04of it.
13:05In late in the fourth quarter, Tressway pinned the Giants down at their own three.
13:10And DQ decided just to let the clock run off rather than get aggressive with Jameis taking snaps at his
13:15own goal line.
13:16He could have called timeouts there and didn't.
13:18And then in overtime, Tress pinned the Giants inside their own ten.
13:22I didn't see what he said about Tress in the Giants game.
13:26I didn't either.
13:26No.
13:27Tress told me he was frustrated leaving London.
13:29No, I could see that one punt in London.
13:31There was one punt in London.
13:32But against the Giants, that was not seen at all.
13:36It is call your shot Thursday.
13:38Now, if you want the special teams to be better, I don't disagree.
13:41I'll take them being better, but, I mean, let's be truthful about what we're discussing.
13:45I didn't see that happen at all.
13:47You've got a kicker that's missed four out of six extra points or something?
13:50Like, maybe my numbers are wrong on that.
13:52We're going to say special teams.
13:53Name that.
13:54That has to get better.
13:56You know, you've got to stop missing those damn moves.
13:58When you miss an extra point early in the game, you're chasing the whole time.
14:02Yeah.
14:02And eventually there's a two-pointer coming, and those are 50-50 shots.
14:05Like, that extra point, I recognize they moved it back, but that should be an 80% shot.
14:1190% shot.
14:12Yeah.
14:13I mean, it's...
14:14Especially for a young man that...
14:15You get to set it where you like it, and kick it.
14:18I'm just saying.
14:20Come on, man.
14:21Call your shot Thursday, 800-636-1067.
14:25800-636-1067.
14:27Jeffrey says, a bunch of guys have been using your answer.
14:30Would you like to call your shot, sir?
14:31Yes, and I got to say, Durante Jones, we've seen these past couple of weeks the defense
14:40kind of die off.
14:41I want to see him have a big game by applying pressure all four quarters.
14:47It's easy to see when we apply pressure, we give teams problems.
14:53We give them a lot of problems.
14:54When they sat back, it's like they were waiting for the teams to punch them in the mouth.
14:58So, I just want to see him literally call a full four quarters.
15:03To that point, Jeff, Odafa Owe got paid real money to join this team.
15:09Significant cash.
15:10Through five games, he's got two sacks, three quarterback...
15:15I'm sorry, five quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble.
15:21Owe has been good.
15:23He leads the league in pressures.
15:25At spots, he's been quite good.
15:27But you'd like to get, similar to Jeff's point of four quarters of pressure from Jones,
15:32four quarters of pressure from Owe.
15:34Because there's not a game you point to where he wrecked the game.
15:37There are spots you point to where he's been damn good.
15:40And he's paid in a manner that would suggest you'd like to see him be damn good for four quarters.
15:46And frankly, if you're going to beat a team like the Niners,
15:50you're going to need some players to wreck a game.
15:54Maybe it's Javon Kinlaw.
15:56I don't know who it's going to be.
15:57But you're going to need some players to wreck a game.
16:01Didn't Kinlaw play in San Fran?
16:03Sure did.
16:03Have an edge.
16:04Have a chip on your shoulder.
16:05He was very unhappy out there.
16:08It did not end well for him out there.
16:09The fan base kind of turned on him.
16:11He was a first-round pick they thought was under-delivering.
16:13There's a pretty famous interview with Kinlaw and Grant Cohn,
16:17if you want to go check that out.
16:19Grant's an interesting guy.
16:20We've had him on the show.
16:21He's an agitator.
16:23He's provocative.
16:23He's provocative.
16:24And he certainly provoked.
16:26Gets the people going.
