00:00Is Sardinia becoming Italy's own Devil's Island?
00:03The governor of Sardinia has accused the Italian government of ignoring local authorities and
00:07residents by continuing to transfer high-security prisoners from the mainland to prisons on the
00:12island.
00:13Alessandro Torde said the central government is treating Sardinia like the Cayenne of Italy,
00:17a reference to the infamous penal colony in French Guiana, nicknamed Devil's Island.
00:22In early September, 88 high-security prisoners arrived on the island.
00:26This takes Sardinia's total number of high-security inmates to 183.
00:30They are among the 746 inmates held under Italy's toughest solitary confinement rules, said the
00:36Times.
00:36These rules, known as 41 beasts, involve near-total isolation of the prisoner, said the Italian
00:41Times.
00:42Prisons have played a significant role in Sardinia's history.
00:45In the 1990s, the island endured an influx of mobster prisoners after a government crackdown
00:50on Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia, said the Times.
00:53Many were locked up on Asenara, off the coast of the island.
00:56The prison was nicknamed the Alcatraz of Italy, as in its 112-year history only one prisoner
01:01has ever escaped.
01:02But since the 1990s, Sardinia, with its silky white beaches, turquoise bays and terracotta
01:08villages, has been working hard to forget its penal past and to position itself as one of
01:13Europe's most popular holiday destinations, said the Telegraph.
01:16Asenara, for example, is now famed for its unique population of albino donkeys.
01:21Local businesses are concerned this appealing image will be tarnished by the government's
01:25plan.
01:25It's now today.
