00:00It's just before 8 p.m. in Sarasota, Florida, where dozens of first responders descend on a horrifying scene after
00:08a 911 caller reported an alleged hit-and-run crash that left a mother and her two young kids fighting
00:14for their lives.
00:31Police find 29-year-old Taylor Bennett, 2-year-old Rio Gallagher, and 5-month-old Keelan Gallagher, all badly
00:39injured, and begin life-saving measures as medics rush to the scene.
00:44Are they running across the street?
00:47Jesus Christ.
00:50Stop, baby!
00:53Is he breathing?
00:55Yes.
01:00Can you give me an answer to the bag, too, please?
01:01Oh, man!
01:02Can you somebody do not the mouth of a room?
01:04Well, yeah.
01:06Hey, Whitney, baby!
01:10Hey, Whitney, baby!
01:13Hey, Whitney!
01:14Hey, Whitney!
01:14Keep CPR going.
01:16Oh, my God!
01:17Where's that ambulance?
01:19One's here.
01:23You got pulses on them?
01:25I'm not sure yet.
01:27I'm going to get the second.
01:29Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
01:31Come on, go, go, go!
01:33Go!
01:34Get out of the way!
01:35Let's go!
01:37Come on!
01:38Go, go, go, let's go!
01:41Go, go, go!
01:43Come on, go, go, go!
01:45Rescue, come on, go, go, go!
01:46Rescue up.
01:48Rescue up here.
01:54Shut down northbound right now until rescue clears.
02:02Two children under the age of two.
02:06They lay a car.
02:08And the mother, I'm assuming it's the mother.
02:12Younger female.
02:13She's probably in her 20s.
02:16Also struck by the car.
02:18They're all free unresponsive.
02:22She dragged down past after it happened.
02:25She pulled up, saw the stuff in the road, and then she just got her car.
02:29So she's not the car that hit.
02:29No, that's what she said.
02:30So this looks like a signal three.
02:32So this is going to be a signal three.
02:33Yeah.
02:36Hey, LT, this looks like it's going to be a signal three.
02:39The vehicle I thought hit and stuff here is not the actual vehicle that hit it.
02:43She just ran over stuff in the roadway.
02:45They're saying an Audi was driving through.
02:48That sped off from the scene.
02:50I don't know.
02:50He's trying to get more successful witness information.
02:53But it looks like it's going to be a hit and run.
02:56Suspecting the mother and her two children may have been victims of a hit and run while
03:00crossing the street, police begin speaking to any potential witnesses, including one
03:05man who identifies himself as Taylor's significant other and the children's father.
03:12Were you with them when it happened?
03:14Yeah, we were walking across the street.
03:17I opened the store and my girl was like, oh, baby, I dropped my phone.
03:22I'm like, okay.
03:23So I got her right over here.
03:25I'm like, I'm not trying to stop the car.
03:27It makes you know I hear, oh, I just don't understand why she, I don't understand.
03:32They got cameras around here.
03:33Well, yeah, they have cameras.
03:35Did you see the vehicle?
03:38They kept going.
03:40They kept going.
03:41I don't know.
03:42I don't know.
03:43Once I see them flying.
03:46All right.
03:47So what'd you see?
03:48I'm on the best road, which morning it is.
03:51Right, but you know, it's just kind of like a super Sudan.
03:54Uh, pretty much I'm looking for if you proceeded this way, because if you proceeded this way,
04:02you can just check maybe the camera, I guess.
04:04Okay.
04:05But he tried to stop, but he just proceeded.
04:09Do you think it was clear that he knew that he hit somebody?
04:12Yep, because he screened when he just kind of shot him.
04:14Okay.
04:14Did you see if it was a female driver or a male driver?
04:17I mean, it just happened within like three seconds.
04:19He just hit, and then he tried to stop, and then he just drove away.
04:23Did you guys see it happening?
04:25I did.
04:25I didn't see it, but I was right.
04:27I came right up on it right after it happened, and I just came to help, so.
04:31Okay.
04:31Black me down right now.
04:33Yes, okay.
04:34And it's called a crash, right?
04:36Okay, so you have a driver like you found it?
04:39I called you.
04:41Can I just take the baby?
04:42Good.
04:43I, I, I, I, I didn't.
04:46I know, I know.
04:48Oh, my God.
04:49He had gone all over his head.
04:51I know.
04:51Oh, my God, you're gone.
04:55Did you see which direction they were coming from?
04:59They came from the store on the crosswalk right over there.
05:01Okay, so they were at the same way, and they were, they were crossing westbound.
05:06I don't think there's, I don't think there's, there's not out there.
05:10Okay, so there's no crosswalk there.
05:13Okay, so did they cross where the intersection comes, or where did they come across this way?
05:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:20Okay, so did they cross like this, or did they go across the intersection?
05:24Okay.
05:28Okay.
05:29Okay, so you probably don't always smoke, so you saw them playing on this line.
05:36Okay, so you immediately ran over to help.
05:39Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:40As soon as you heard it, you saw them flying, you immediately ran over to help.
05:45Okay.
05:45Okay.
05:45The baby was in, the dogger was in a stroller.
05:48Okay.
05:48The mommy had the baby.
05:49Okay.
05:50And they flew.
05:51Okay.
05:51And, um, I gotta grab all these little young people, the five-year-old, whatever, and
05:56I can't hold her.
05:57Okay.
05:57In order to see everything.
05:58Okay.
05:59And then I saw the baby was liberated.
06:01Okay.
06:02Okay.
06:05Would you mind telling me where the driver of that vehicle is?
06:08I'm not entirely sure right this moment, okay?
06:10If you don't know, then that means that they ran.
06:14I would like to know if he ran or if you guys have obtained him or her.
06:20We do not have the driver at this moment, okay?
06:23According to a probable cause affidavit, Taylor, Rio, and Kylan were all rushed to a hospital.
06:29Kylan, the five-month-old, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, while two-year-old Rio
06:35was transported to a children's hospital where police said he succumbed to his injuries the
06:39following day.
06:40Taylor was admitted to the ICU and reportedly survived for two months in a coma until she
06:46also ultimately passed away.
06:48Police said the couple's two other young children were unharmed in the incident.
06:52You're the only person that saw it.
06:54It's a silver sedan, you said?
06:56What's that?
06:57What kind of vehicle was it?
06:59I'm not pretty sure which model was it, but it was a silver sedan, like…
07:03Okay.
07:04It's a four-door sedan.
07:06Like a four-door sedan.
07:07You know.
07:07It's a silver one.
07:08And it was going this direction?
07:09Yep.
07:10You almost…
07:11You know, a little bit here, and then took off.
07:14And then took off four.
07:16Yeah.
07:17And they saw the sedan.
07:18Silver sedan, four-door.
07:19They don't know what to make.
07:20Fly through the intersection.
07:22Hit the kids.
07:23Everyone went in the air.
07:25Continue southbound.
07:26This was just the second car to come through.
07:28They ran out and yelled, stop, stop, stop.
07:29And that's where it stopped right there.
07:32I was in with the six-month-old.
07:34Yep.
07:35And from what I've heard from all of them, it's going to be deceased on all of them.
07:39Deceased on all three?
07:40On all three.
07:41Okay, yeah.
07:44Yeah.
07:44This is terrible.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Yeah, yeah.
07:47Doesn't get worse than this.
07:49Cars are waiting up the booth, car, it's like right there.
07:52Yeah.
07:52I'm trying to get close to the people.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Okay.
07:55We're walking.
07:57We get in the middle.
07:58Yeah.
07:59I'm still chasing.
08:00I'm going to drive my phone about right here.
08:02Okay.
08:02So, you're walking my party.
08:05You're here.
08:05Parking.
08:05No.
08:06Yeah.
08:06I'm trying to get her out of the car, and they hit her like, literally right there, she got hit
08:28right here, probably a little back here, like right up, literally she got hit right here.
08:36The car was going this way.
08:38I don't, I just don't know, I don't, I don't see her walking in front of the, the car, she
08:43knows, she got some baby on her, I don't know, my son was in a stroller, I don't, I don't,
08:49I just don't see, I know they got cameras around here somewhere.
08:52Next, one officer reviews surveillance camera footage from a nearby business and explains what he saw.
08:58That's the best that you can see from what happens, but the family was inside the store just roughly before
09:04they finished their stuff, and then you can see them kind of cross the parking lot up to here, and
09:09they kind of disappear from frame.
09:10I'm assuming to cross the road somewhere in here, and then you see traffic stop going, there's no traffic that
09:18goes south, and then that white vehicle goes down, and then in the other frame you can see it go
09:25down, make a U-turn, and then it disappears out of frame going northbound right afterwards, right as that vehicle
09:31comes to a stop to help everybody else.
09:45You heard that right. Police said surveillance video showed the suspect's car briefly stop and U-turn after the crash,
09:52before driving back past the scene and eventually out of view, never stopping to help.
09:58Investigators also recovered headlight lens fragments and plastic bumper pieces from the crash site that they later determined belongs to
10:06a Lexus Sedan.
10:08Armed with physical evidence, witness statements, and tips, it takes officials two days to track down their suspect at her
10:15home about seven miles away from the crash site.
10:24Police identify the suspect, seen here as 72-year-old June Fenton standing near the vehicle police suspect to be
10:32involved in the fatal hit-and-run.
10:59Here, one officer notes extensive front-end damage to the car.
11:04But that's not all.
11:17Officers also note a heavily shattered windshield, they say was consistent with the pedestrian crash.
11:23After obtaining a search warrant, investigators later matched the broken fragments found at the scene to June's vehicle,
11:30and said long hair was found embedded in the windshield.
11:34Next, June chats with police and detectives as they await a tow truck to impound her vehicle.
11:39So, how about if I see how much longer he, because, wait, can I ask you what time it is?
11:44It is 1-11.
11:46Okay, so it's early for him to be back then.
11:48Okay.
11:49But yeah, if he needs to, if he's on an area that he wants to stop and move this real
11:55quick, and then that's fine with me, just so we don't have to desert.
11:59There's really nowhere for him to move it, but that's probably the thing.
12:03Okay.
12:04It's our HOA presence.
12:06It's like, oh, thank you.
12:07Who, which one?
12:08No, I'm sure.
12:09Should I wait for him?
12:10Just to, yeah.
12:12There we go.
12:15So he doesn't have to rescue me.
12:26So, more people are coming to take pictures.
12:29You guys don't multitask.
12:30What's that?
12:31You guys don't multitask.
12:32Not when it comes to that.
12:33We're not the professionals.
12:35Okay.
12:36And then he'll do that while it's in there.
12:38Okay.
12:39And then he'll do that while it's in there.
12:40In the middle of 41.
12:42So.
12:42Longed down with the whole road.
12:45Yeah.
12:46Okay.
12:49Hello, folks.
12:53According to a probable cause affidavit, when asked about the damage, June told investigators
12:58she had hit a dog on her way home from feeding stray cats two days prior and said when she
13:04turned
13:04around, she saw people in the road and continued driving because she, quote, did not want to see a dog
13:10suffering.
13:20I think I'm the only one in the, in our unit that she lives in, sir.
13:24So.
13:26So.
13:29So.
13:32How are we doing, sir?
13:34All right.
13:34June, you okay?
13:36Uh, yes.
13:37These guys are here to arrest me and I said you live about 20.
13:41You're not being arrested.
13:42No, no, no.
13:44No, I'm not.
13:44You're joking with me.
13:45Remember, remember I told you I didn't know.
13:47Oh, oh, okay.
13:49Okay.
13:49I'm sure.
13:49Yeah.
13:51I'll, I'll let you do whatever you guys do.
13:53Okay.
13:54I'll let you know, thank you.
13:55Appreciate it.
14:00Ready?
14:04Not for loaders.
14:18Is this a kind of suit?
14:20This is a kind of suit.
14:21Um, but we don't want anyone, you know, in terms of what we do.
14:25Any, on anybody.
14:26Mm-hmm.
14:27Physical.
14:28Okay.
14:37So good to be out.
14:41What kind of work did you do?
14:43Um, I bought this pool, so we just put in, but whoever did it, they were on blackboard.
14:48Mm-hmm, so I went to a boring place to replace them.
14:53He's going to lay it on.
14:54Yeah.
14:55And then the shower is able to do it first, so.
14:58Are you leaving?
14:59I am.
15:00Nice to meet you.
15:01Go blue.
15:02Right.
15:03Uh-huh.
15:08I'll see you at Pompano.
15:10That's right.
15:11I really agree.
15:12What's your first name?
15:14Four or five, though.
15:15I'm not a four or five.
15:18I'm a good two-point guy.
15:22You're perfect.
15:23Mm-mm.
15:25As the investigation continues, let's rewind to the scene when one witness explains what
15:30allegedly happened after having a chance to catch his breath.
15:33My understanding is you were here and you saw this happen, is that correct?
15:36Yes, sir.
15:36All right, tell me what you saw.
15:37Okay.
15:38You want me to start from the beginning?
15:39Yes, sir.
15:39Okay, so we was at the house, we took a shower, we went to go get some cigarettes.
15:45So we're walking out of the house, you know, we go in there, we search the store, we get
15:48a couple things.
15:49Which store?
15:50Speedway, I'm sorry.
15:51Speedway, no problem.
15:52Yeah, I'll be more specific.
15:52Yep.
15:53No, no, no, it's okay.
15:53So we go in the Speedway, you know.
15:55Did you walk?
15:56Yeah, we walked.
15:57My son, Rio, was in a stroller.
15:59Yep.
15:59Kylan was on my wife, Taylor's chest in the holster.
16:03Yep.
16:03So we go in the store, we get what we need, and we come back out.
16:06We're walking, we stop, we're walking out of Speedway.
16:09Yep.
16:09So we come to this corner stop sign right there.
16:12And you're pointing towards 7th here.
16:13Yes, right here on 7th.
16:14Yeah.
16:15And then as we see that the left side coming is clear, we start crossing.
16:20Mm-hmm.
16:21Next thing you know, I hear, and then I hear Taylor like, oh, babe, I dropped my phone.
16:26So I'm like, all right, you know, I'm going to get it, babe, don't worry about it.
16:28It's like, they're going to hit it.
16:29And then, so I'm going out there, and I'm trying to stop the car so I can get the phone.
16:34Yeah.
16:35And next thing you know, I hear, boom.
16:37And then I turn around, and I, you know, I catch a glimpse, and then I see them land.
16:42So I go over there and try to attend to them real quick.
16:45And this is my wife and Kyle, and that's in this.
16:47Where were you standing?
16:48I was standing, like, to the, probably late.
16:51So you've got two lanes here.
16:53Okay, yeah.
16:53These are the southbound lanes.
16:54Can we walk to the curb and see if you're going to need to know, okay, yeah.
16:57Kind of exactly where, okay, I can kind of see where they hit them at.
17:01Yeah, show me where you're staying and show me where they were.
17:04She was kind of far.
17:05I don't understand why she was that far, but I don't think they hit her, like, somewhere
17:09like right here.
17:09Did she drop your phone?
17:11Yes, her phone was right here.
17:12Her phone was back here.
17:14Yeah, somewhere right here.
17:15Okay.
17:15So we come off the curb.
17:18Okay.
17:18Okay, careful.
17:19Oh, yeah.
17:19That was too good.
17:20Yep.
17:21So, let me, I'm just going to walk.
17:23Okay.
17:23Okay.
17:24So we come out of this door.
17:25We get right here.
17:27You know, the other walks around.
17:29I jump off the curb.
17:30Maybe that's why she was out so far.
17:32So she was pushing her stroller.
17:34So, and I'm right here, and we're walking, you know, we're tossing normally, just like this,
17:39in an angle.
17:39Yep.
17:40So I put this way right there.
17:41I'm like, get over here.
17:42So I go grab this one here, boom.
17:45So I stop.
17:46So you're there.
17:47She's like, probably like, I'm walking.
17:49You tell me, I don't know, right here.
17:51I think it's that maybe.
17:52I don't know.
17:53Is she over here?
17:53No, she was like, she couldn't be in that lane.
17:57She had to be at least, at least like, right.
18:00She wasn't that far, probably like right here, maybe.
18:04At least.
18:04So where did she say?
18:05The phone was like right here, somewhere.
18:07Okay.
18:08And then, so I'm like, I come back.
18:10I come back, and I'm trying to get the phone.
18:13And the next thing you know, I hear, boom.
18:14And then I turn around, and that's when I see, and that's when I go running.
18:19And I, okay, so I get her.
18:21I didn't see Rio yet.
18:22And that lady car was backing up, and that's when I seen Rio.
18:24So I went and grabbed Rio, and came back to her, and I strapped the baby off her chest.
18:29And I had her, the baby and Rio, and then some people, the people were there.
18:33So I started, you know, I had her, I had them grab the babies and stuff like that.
18:36And then I got her, because, you know, everybody looked like everybody was breathing, but her, Rio was still breathing.
18:41So, you know, I try to, you know, and, and that's when they call 911.
18:47Three weeks after the crash, investigators determined they have enough to arrest June, and knock on her door a second
18:53time.
18:59Hey, June.
19:02Thank you, ma'am.
19:02Okay, we're here for the case that we're all lost in.
19:05I'm here with the officer, only.
19:08So, um, we have a, what would people call it?
19:12We've already called it.
19:13We have three arrests for this case, okay?
19:14Okay.
19:15So, we get to reach out, um, to anybody necessary and stuff like that.
19:20So, the other thing you need, we are going to be on the jail today.
19:23Okay, so, I'm told just to not really bring anything.
19:27Yeah.
19:27My phone?
19:28Yeah, yeah.
19:29Like, my heart rate are going to lock down.
19:30Is that when you're talking to your attorney?
19:32Okay, yeah.
19:33Okay.
19:35Do you just have your phone?
19:37Yeah.
19:38Five, six, one, four.
19:39Yeah, just your phone.
19:40How's he?
19:40So, it's going to happen.
19:41I'm going to take all the stuff from you.
19:43Awesome.
19:43I'm just going to search you.
19:44Okay.
19:45I'm going to talk about it earlier, like you just told me and stuff like that.
19:48So, we're just going to go ahead and click it in front of you.
19:51We're going to go ahead and click it in front of you.
19:55Mary Oceanora.

19:57If you want to just, actually, we'll just come inside if that's okay.
19:59Yeah, no, please do.
20:01I don't know if I just want to come to the office.
20:03You can just come to the office.
20:05Oh, not the car, I guess.
20:07Which key is it?
20:08Both of them?
20:08No.
20:09Oh, it's this one.
20:09Never mind.
20:10I'm sorry.
20:10No, thank you.
20:13Bye, guys.
20:16It'll be about a 15-minute drive or so to the jail, and we'll get you processed through
20:20there.
20:22Should get your attorney to call.
20:37Okay.
20:42Okay.
20:44Okay.
20:58Okay.
20:59Okay.

21:05Interceptor.
21:05And send the hand over to them.
21:21Before I leave, I've got to read you what's called Miranda.
21:24This is something law enforcement does.
21:26Yes, ma'am, it's very similar.
21:27It's not so dramatic in person, though.
21:29Okay.
21:30So I'll just read a statement.
21:32I'll ask you if you understand.
21:33Okay.
21:34If you want me to repeat anything, just say so, okay?
21:36You have the right to remain silent.
21:38Do you understand?
21:39Yes.
21:40Anything you say can will be used against you in the court of law.

21:53cost to you before and during questioning, if you wish.

21:56I do.
21:57You can decide any time to exercise these rights, not answer any questions or make
22:02any statements.
22:03Again, do you understand?
22:04I do.
22:05Do you understand each of these rights I have explained to you?
22:09Yes.
22:09Yes, ma'am.
22:10And then having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to us now?
22:13No, not at this time.
22:14Thank you, ma'am.

22:39bond, sparking backlash from the victim's family.
22:42Since her release, the final charge was upgraded after Taylor's death weeks later.
22:47At last check, June pleaded not guilty to the charges and is expected back in court to face
