00:02A lonely Catherine Street where mother of four Colleen Bradshaw was brutally beaten in an attack which eventually took her
00:10life.
00:11We're not just talking about numbers, you know, for every woman who passes at the hands of a partner, that's
00:17a mother, an auntie, a grandmother.
00:19Today, the victim's long-term partner, 47-year-old Lindsay Kennedy, was jailed over the fatal bashing in the Catherine
00:28Central Business District in July 2024.
00:32In sentencing, Justice Peter Barr said an intoxicated Kennedy punched, kicked and stomped on Ms Bradshaw's head.
00:40All strikes were very forceful.
00:43The punch was delivered when the deceased's head was in close proximity of the hard brick wall,
00:48and the other strikes were delivered when the deceased's head was resting against the hard concrete surface of the footpath.
00:55Therefore, not only were the strikes delivered to a very vulnerable part of the body,
01:00but because of the hard surfaces surrounding her, there was no cushioning effect,
01:05and no opportunity for the force of your strikes to dissipate.
01:10Remarkably, the victim survived, but after health staff at Catherine District Hospital failed to identify her head injuries,
01:18she was sent north on a bus and died in Royal Darwin Hospital five days later.
01:25Justice Barr said doctors there assessed that she had suffered a catastrophic brain injury with no viable treatment options.
01:33He said he agreed with the trial jury.
01:35He was confident Kennedy's conduct caused the death of the deceased.
01:40It's unfortunately something that women's legal services are all too familiar with,
01:47which is stories in our communities of women dying at the hands of their partner.
01:53Kennedy was sentenced to 11 years behind bars for negligent manslaughter,
01:57more than five without parole, backdated to 2024.
