00:00He joins us right now. Daryl is brought to you by Jive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:06Daryl, how you doing? What was your feeling?
00:08Hello, boys. Doing good. Halfway home to the World Series.
00:13Yeah, I mean, the bat flip, that's what got you yesterday.
00:18You know what I love, Daryl, about bat flips in the postseason is you know you're not going to get
00:22buzzed up north of the shoulders the next at bat.
00:26Now you might get it next year, but you're not going to get that in a playoff game.
00:30The stakes are too high.
00:31Are we past throwing at guys for bat flips?
00:33I would think so, but they all complain about it when other teams do it.
00:36Yeah, because they just got taken on. They're all embarrassed.
00:38Well, then don't leave one over there. Don't do it.
00:41There was a photograph that the Guardians posted of it, and it was looking toward home plate from first base,
00:53the first baseline.
00:55And everyone's looking up at the bat in the air.
01:02Just a phenomenal photograph. I don't know who took it, but kudos to that photographer.
01:07Yeah, I mean, look, unsung heroes and unexpected unsung heroes.
01:13I don't think anyone had a PD helping to run homer on their bingo card at that particular point of
01:21the game.
01:21And they're in the bottom of the fifth inning, and then it held up.
01:26That was the other part of it, too. Kudos to the Guardians' bullpen.
01:31Four relievers combined for four scoreless innings, and you get a four-out save from Cade Smith.
01:37But for not being a sellout crowd, it sure sounded like a sellout crowd yesterday afternoon, that's for sure,
01:43especially when that ball left the yard.
01:46I wanted to say, like, we always struggle with, like, well, everything's a vote loss when you lose.
01:51How do you find a vote win? I thought it was a vote win yesterday.
01:54Again, it's all results-based.
01:56He came out, and they just lose the game 2-1, and he goes seven innings, and it's even worse.
02:02If you pull Gavin Williams out and you end up losing the game, people are mad at you.
02:06You pull Gavin Williams out.
02:08Now, when it happened, I didn't know about the VLO thing, all right?
02:10I didn't know about that, so that might concern you a little bit for the future.
02:14But let me go back to this, is that now with 70 pitches, it seems to me that the options
02:20on the table
02:21to bring him back to start, certainly, in the series, but also to possibly relieve in the series as well
02:27when you only threw 70 pitches.
02:29And then Daniel Espino doing his job, I thought it was a remarkable game
02:34and a remarkable move by Steven Vogt.
02:37Well, the entire timeline was, what on earth is Vogt doing here?
02:40Pulling Gavin Williams, who has nine strikeouts.
02:43Yeah, he did get touched up in the fourth inning with the—he gave up a double, walked a batter,
02:50and then Chandler Simpson had the two-run triple into the right-field corner,
02:55and everyone's yelling and screaming, what's Vogt doing?
02:59And then we talked to him after the game, and Vogt says, well, yeah,
03:03noticed the VLO was down in the fifth inning, wanted to make sure everything was okay,
03:06didn't want to take a chance having him run through, especially the top of that lineup there
03:15for the Tampa Bay Rays, which is like a minefield, those first four hitters there.
03:19So I thought it ended up being a great move by Steven Vogt to go ahead and pull Gavin Williams.
03:26Gavin said after the game he's fine, he feels fine physically,
03:30and he even acknowledged that he did notice, though, his velocity was not the same in that fifth inning.
03:38So I did find that interesting.
03:42But, you know, Daniel Espino, Eric Sobrowski, Hunter Gattis, and then, as I mentioned,
03:47Cade Smith, you know, slammed the door on the Rays,
03:50and the Guardians are halfway home to the World Series.
03:53Daryl, I made the statement earlier, and I know how crazy postseason baseball is
03:59with anxiety and nerves, but in a weird way, and I know there was a great sequence there
04:04at the end of the eighth inning with Diaz and Cade Smith that was nerve-wracking
04:09and a couple of fouls, but it feels like...
04:12That was a 10-pitch at-bat.
04:13It was.
04:13Yeah.
04:14I mean, and I'm sitting there as I'm watching that at-bat because I'm counting the pitches.
04:19You know, I'm like, you know, it gets to six, and I'm like, okay, that's reasonable for,
04:24you know, the hitter.
04:25And then it gets to seven, then eight, then nine, ten.
04:27Once it got to double digits, I got real nervous because I was thinking,
04:30don't want to run Cade Smith's pitch count up here.
04:33You know, that's what I was thinking.
04:35So I'm watching, and he got the punch out, and then came back in the top of the ninth
04:40and had an easy one, two, three save, as easy as it's going to get.
04:46Well, and that's what I want to focus on.
04:48Like, the pitching has been so dominant that you've only scored four runs, right,
04:52the last two games.
04:53Right.
04:54And yet, you know, here you are with a 2-1 lead.
04:56It seemed easier because the pitching is so dominant than I thought it was going to be
05:00against this raised team.
05:01Well, because, you know, Tampa Bay, you know, they really, like the Guardians,
05:09play the game the right way, right?
05:11And I asked him to vote about this, you know, before the game,
05:14because it almost feels like these organizations are mirror images of each other.
05:18Their economics are very similar.
05:20The way they operate is very similar.
05:22The way they play the game is similar.
05:25Focus on quality pitching.
05:29You know, focus, get on base, get over, get in, have a little pop in their lineup as well.
05:36And, I mean, Junior Caminero yesterday, four strikeouts.
05:41Like, I don't know if we'll see that again.
05:43That was, like, shocking to me because he's such a great hitter.
05:50But, no, the Guardians pitching, I would, I mean, it's, I think it's because it's the
05:57postseason, Anthony, it's getting highlighted, it's getting its just due.
06:01But, for the most part, Guardian pitching has been good all season.
06:04Yeah, they've had their hiccups, but that's the ebbs and flows of a 162-game season.
06:09But their pitching is, you know, has been really good.
06:13They had 13 strikeouts again yesterday.
06:14I mean, it's, it's, I thought Gavin at times was electric with his stuff outside of that
06:24fourth inning when they got two runs off of him.
06:28But, and, look, this is the time of year where, you know, pitching typically reigns
06:34supreme over the hitting.
06:36And, you know, the Guardian arms have been stepping it up.
06:41Daryl Ryder joining us right now.
06:42What do you think the weather, if it does impact today's game, what do you think it
06:49means for the pitching situation if the next game, game four, ends up being tomorrow?
06:55Yeah, because, and you're looking at it probably a Sunday late afternoon start for game five
07:02if they're unable to play tonight.
07:04And, obviously, with the Brewers handling their business and Bob Uecker smiling from heaven
07:08somewhere over that, maybe pouring one out as well, you know, allowing them to play tonight
07:15at eight o'clock, again, assuming Mother Nature holds up.
07:19You know, Stephen Vogt didn't even want to go there yesterday.
07:22Before, before the game, he was asked.
07:25Didn't want to talk about it, really.
07:27Asked after the game.
07:28And he's like, hey, we got to see if we even play a baseball game before I can name a
07:33starter.
07:34But I do think a delay certainly, you know, helps with, you know, maybe you have, instead
07:43of having Messick in, I think, game seven, you could have him in game six instead.
07:49And then, can you bring Gavin Williams back for a game seven?
07:53But I'm interested to see who they go ahead and put on the mound tonight or, you know,
08:01tomorrow afternoon slash evening.
08:03But, yeah, Stephen Vogt didn't really offer anything in the way of substance of what might
08:09be going through his head as far as his options go.
08:11I have a tremendous feeling about the Guardians.
08:13Not so much about the Browns.
08:15The injuries, the depth.
08:17I'm serious, Daryl.
08:18And, man, there's been so much talk about the shotgun stuff.
08:24By the way, we're picking Guardians wins this week over a Browns win over the Ravens.
08:28Yes, Lord.
08:30Yes, for everything.
08:32It should be that way.
08:33Any postseason game should be picked over a regular season.
08:36Yes.
08:38I'm getting a weird stealing feeling about Sunday.
08:41You're feeling the same way.
08:43Because we're talking all this shotgun stuff, and I'm going, man, we're beating around the bush.
08:47We're talking about a limited quarterback here.
08:49And we're talking about a limited quarterback against a good football team.
08:53We're talking about some problems then maybe Sunday afternoon, buddy.
08:56Right.
08:56Yeah.
08:57And I, with all these injuries they currently have, even if, like, let's just say best case
09:03scenario, can everybody that is banged up is able to play on Sunday?
09:08It's just not 100%, right?
09:11You know, Quinn Sean, he's hurt and not practicing, and he's not been running the ball well to begin
09:19with.
09:21I, yeah, I don't have a good feeling about Sunday's game at all.
09:26And, you know, again, looking at this injury, the good news is they, I think, only seven guys
09:32did not practice yesterday.
09:34So, that's good.
09:35But, you know, Carson Schlesinger's relatively important, right?
09:40You know, Mike Hall Jr., Mason Graham, those guys are, you know, those are big losses in
09:44the front seven when you're going against the Ravens.
09:48Now, on the flip side, Lamar Jackson's not practicing this week.
09:51Remains to be seen if he's going to be available on Sunday.
09:54But, look, Tyler Huntley helped win a game last week in overtime, so you can't just sit
10:02there and assume that because Lamar Jackson is not playing that, you know, it's going
10:07to be an easy afternoon at the office.
10:09I'm with you.
10:10I don't have a good feeling about Sunday.
10:13I really don't.
10:13Well, Padone thought I should have made a bigger deal about last Sunday against the Jets.
10:17And I'm like, well, you're, I just, I think you can be a competitive team, and the definition
10:24of competitive is, like, maybe be competitive for a playoff spot.
10:28Yeah.
10:29That was my thought of it.
10:31But you lose the game to the Jets, all right, you're 3-2.
10:34Now you've got to go against the Ravens, because if you win against the Jets, it's house money,
10:37it's a measuring stick game, and now it's like, all of a sudden, if we come in on Monday
10:42morning and you're 3-3, and your quarterback doesn't play very well at 3-3, you know the
10:47calls we're going to start getting here.
10:49Yeah, no, you're right.
10:51I guess my argument against that is it's really hard to judge Deshaun off that Jets game because
10:57of how the supporting cast around him played.
11:00It is a team game, right?
11:02Now, give the supporting cast credit for the way they played in a positive way the previous
11:07three weeks to help Deshaun Watson out, because, and I know it's a cliche, Lance Reisland
11:14and I talk about it all the time, how it's never as good as it looks in a win, and
11:19is
11:20never as bad as it looks in a loss, and I kind of feel like we're getting that a little
11:26bit with Deshaun Watson.
11:27I maintain this.
11:29I don't think that, you know, let me say this.
11:32I think that Deshaun has shown that he can be competent on the field, okay?
11:38But is he going to elevate you?
11:40Is he going to carry you to wins?
11:42Probably not.
11:44Credit to him for the three game winning drives in the fourth quarter, part of that three game
11:48win streak, but also credit to supporting cast.
11:51Guys were making catches and getting yards after the catch and running the ball well in
11:56those key situations.
11:59And again, giving Deshaun his credit for, you know, making those plays, but I just, I
12:05don't have an expectation that Deshaun Watson is going to be carrying you this season.
12:10You need the supporting cast to play well.
12:12You need your offensive line to give him additional protection because, yeah, he is holding the
12:16ball a little too long because he's not played a lot of football in the last six years.
12:21So reading the field right now is not a strength of his as far as the quick millisecond processing
12:29that you have to have at that position.
12:32And when you have a game like last week where Isaiah Bond drops two key passes there, I
12:39mean, that's tough to overcome and especially in those conditions.
12:43So I'm curious to see how Deshaun does play on Sunday.
12:47I'm curious to see how the offensive line blocks.
12:50And I'm curious to see if the Browns go back to catching the football the way we saw him
12:53catch it for three weeks there.
12:56And if they do, well, the Browns will be in the game and having a shot to win.
12:59But if they're dropping footballs and Deshaun's spending the whole afternoon running around
13:03like he did against the New York Jets, well, the odds are it's probably not going to be
13:06a very fun afternoon for anybody.
13:08All right, Daryl, real quick.
13:09Why did Shador get an agent?
13:12Yeah, that's, I think, you know, first of all, he should have had one going into the draft.
13:18He might not have gone in the fifth round.
13:20Don't say that, Daryl.
13:21I don't know why he should have had an agent already.
13:23You're going to get attacked.
13:23Why did Shador just get an agent, Daryl?
13:28Probably to start planning for his future.
13:31A future where?
13:32Well, that's the question.
13:34In football, in music, in business, in where?
13:37In life.
13:38Hey, he's doing pretty fine off the field, my understanding.
13:41He's making all his money off the field.
13:43He's not making a plan for the Cleveland Browns on a fifth round quarterback or, you know,
13:47quarterback.
13:48Whoa.
13:50No, I mean, look, the timing's curious.
13:53You know, and any time you go from not having an agent to all of a sudden you have one
13:58or
13:58you change your agents.
13:59And I know there's a lot of speculation that potentially he could be lining himself to ask
14:03for a trade here in the coming weeks.
14:05There you go.
14:05Finally, Daryl.
14:06I was going to say, we should present you by a landscaping company because you're getting
14:09damn good at beating around the bush.
14:11Come on, let's go.
14:13I know what you were thinking.
14:15I can't sit here and say he's going to ask for a trade, though, because...
14:18That's what Florio said.
14:19That's what Kenny Carmen said.
14:21Well, that's what Kenny Carmen's wondering, I'll tell you that.
14:23Well, it's fair to wonder that because that's usually what happens when guys do the agent
14:28thing.
14:28Well, and all the people around them seem to want him out of Cleveland.
14:31Every time they get a chance to talk, they keep saying what a terrible organization
14:34this is.
14:35Yeah, the team that drafted him and started him in seven games last year and had him compete
14:39for the job this year.
14:40Well, I'll say this.
14:42I think they need to check reality as far as what the actual demand for Shador Sanders
14:47services are right now.
14:49I don't know that...
14:50Now we're getting to the good stuff here.
14:51I don't know that there's...
14:52I don't know that there's a line of teams, you know, getting ready to be in a bidding
14:57war to trade for him.
14:58So there's that part of the reality.
15:00Well, it's also that Andrew...
15:01I don't think Andrew Barry has ever acquiesced to a trade demand.
15:05No.
15:05Ever.
15:05I don't think he ever has.
15:06No, you go back all the way to David Njoku, right?
15:11And you...
15:12This is going to sound absurd to say, and I'm totally joking about this, but usually when
15:17guys ask for trades, they get big, fat contracts from the Browns.
15:21They usually solve it with money, but it's way too early to be talking about any type
15:25of contract extension for Shador Sanders.
15:27Right now.
15:28All right.
15:28Daryl, we thank you so much for the time.
15:30You're wonderful.
15:31We'll talk to you on Monday.
15:33All the very best to you for a safe and wonderful weekend.
15:35Go Guardians.
15:36Go Browns.
15:36You too, guys.
15:38Thank you very much.
15:38The Dangerous One, Daryl Ryder, brought to you by...
15:40Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
15:43Should have been brought to you by Colavita Tree Farm.
15:46Beating around them shrubs.
15:48Generations.
15:49I know what you want to say.
15:51Just say it, Daryl.
15:52Dammit, just say it with your chest.
15:53Come on, man.
15:55He got there, though.
15:57Zach Meisel.
15:58He's going to join us at 840 this morning.
16:00Coming up in five, about last night.
16:02What the hell did John want me to say?
16:04John, what did you want me to say about last night?
16:05Oh, yeah.
16:07A former Browns wide receiver.
16:09He's suing his doctors, and we got to get into the 2014 playoff.
16:13Nobody wants it, but it's easily explainable.
16:16It's coming up in five on the...
