SCP-3288 designates a highly predatory species or subspecies of the genus Homo (Homo anthropophagus). SCP-3288 display a number of abnormal characteristics and behaviors that distinguish them from the baseline species. The Foundation became aware of SCP-3288 while investigating reports of unexplained disappearances in Vienna. It was discovered that these incidents occurred in close proximity to sewer holes and access tunnels and primarily targeted the most vulnerable of the population such as prostitutes, unsupervised children, transients, and inebriated or otherwise indisposed individuals.

Short filmTranscript
00:09Austria, 1946. Although the war has been over for a year, the country has yet to fully recover
00:15due to the ongoing chaos of Allied occupation. The capital city of Vienna has been split into
00:22four zones, British, French, American, and Russian. The economy is a wreck, as trade between the four
00:28zones is overly complicated. It's a terrible time to be an Austrian, unless you're in the smuggling
00:34business. A small outfit of illicit traders have figured out that they can use the city's vast
00:40interconnected underground tunnels to get contraband in and out of the city unnoticed.
00:45So far, it's been a pretty easy gig. Sure, they get a little dirty in the process,
00:49but this way they can avoid the various army patrols and checkpoints that the occupying Allied
00:54forces have set up. However, it would ultimately be their undoing, because unbeknownst to them,
01:00they aren't the only ones using these tunnels to get around. There are three members of the team,
01:06the forger, the driver, and the ex-army engineer who has designated himself the leader of the group.
01:11The trio are following the same map they've used dozens of times before, their way forward lit by
01:17a strong flashlight. The only sounds around them are echoing drips of water and the sounds of their
01:23own footsteps. But suddenly, something else joins the mix. Faint laughter.
01:29I heard something, the forger says, which makes the leader roll his eyes.
01:33It's probably just rats, says the driver. Neither of them wanted to come, but the leader's logic was
01:39that one of them had to have his hands free to hold the flashlight while the other two carried
01:43the bags. The forger protests. After all, he's been down here just as many times as the other two.
01:49At this point, he definitely knows what a rat sounds like. What he heard was definitely not rats.
01:56Don't be such a baby, the leader tells him. Listen, next time you get scared,
02:01just think about this time tomorrow when you're counting your cut of the money.
02:05The leader expects him to push back and say something about how he still hasn't seen his
02:09cut from the last job. Instead, he hears a loud crunch, followed by a scream of pain.
02:14But by the time he and the driver turn around, the forger is gone. His glasses, as well as his
02:21bag
02:21full of counterfeit cigarettes, lay on the stone floor of the catacomb, next to a trail of blood
02:26that leads around the corner. Another scream echoes from deeper in the catacombs. The two surviving
02:32men leap into action and give chase. When they turn the corner, the leader's flashlight beam lands on a
02:38pale figure hunched over the forger's prone form. The figure has long arms with six fingers on each
02:44hand and bony plates on each knuckle, with skin so pale that its veins are clearly visible.
02:50But strangely enough, the figure is also dressed in the garments of an 18th century dandy,
02:56buckle shoes, breeches, and an intricately embroidered frock coat. As soon as the flashlight beam
03:01lands on it, its head snaps up and turns around, revealing a terrifying visage. Its eyes are milky white,
03:08and enormous fangs that almost resemble a pig's tusks protrude out of its pronounced lower jaw.
03:13The creature screeches, covers its face with one long arm, then skitters back into the darkness
03:18on all fours. The leader and the driver rush to their accomplice's side. The forger is still alive,
03:24but the blood coming out of his mouth is a poor sign for his chances of recovery.
03:29What the hell was that? Asks the leader. Nothing good, says the driver. Suddenly, the forger's eyes go
03:36wide, and he starts coughing and gurgling, trying to speak through a mouthful of blood.
03:41His companions realize too late that what he was trying to say was, look behind you.
03:47Both men feel blunt instruments hit the back of their heads, and the next thing they know,
03:51they're sitting on the table of a lavish dining room, or at least what used to be a lavish dining
03:57room. When his eyes adjust to the dark, the driver, who used to be in the catering business before the
04:02war, recognizes the layout of the room as the dining hall of Hofburg Palace. He feels glad to
04:09be unable to see much of the details in the pitch black, though. The fact that the room smells like
04:13rotten meat suggests he wouldn't like seeing the rest of it. They're tied up, surrounded by more
04:19creatures like the one that killed the forger. Some of them are so misshapen that they barely look
04:23human, but all are wearing tattered rococo finery. The two smugglers start screaming for help,
04:29but their screams are quickly drowned out by the sounds of manic laughter and, oddly enough,
04:35classical music being played on a harpsichord. Suddenly, a trumpet sounds, and the room's
04:41heavy oak doors open. The monsters fall silent and form two neat lines. Four more creatures lope
04:47through the oak door, carrying an enormous sedan chair on their shoulders. Atop the sedan is another
04:53creature, but instead of being long and thin like the others, this one is gigantic, wearing a red
04:59veil that covers every part of its face above its enormous, toothy mouth.
05:04Presenting his royal highness the king. The monster who had blown the trumpet earlier snarls through
05:10its jagged fangs. The rest of the monsters bow as the so-called king squeezes into his throne at
05:16the end of the dining table. Dinner is served. He bellows, and the feasting begins.
05:24SCP-3288 are an anomalous human subspecies, scientifically designated as Homo anthropophagius,
05:30that live in underground colonies scattered around Western Europe. These creatures are hairless and lack
05:36pigmentation due to their underground habitat. They have physical deformities which, in Homo sapiens,
05:41are usually associated with inbreeding, including polydactyly, abnormal numbers of digits on the hands and feet,
05:47hyperdontia, the presence of extra teeth or extra rows of teeth, mandibular prognathism, an oversized
05:53lower jaw leading to severe overbite, and deformities of the spine that result in partially
05:58quadrupedal movement. However, whereas in all other known human species, the level of inbreeding that
06:03would result in these deformities also cause shortened lifespan, weak immune system, and eventually
06:07infertility, SCP-3288 possesses an anomalous gene that protects them from any genetic defects that would
06:14prevent viable offspring from being produced. In fact, this anomalous gene causes the opposite to
06:20happen. SCP-3288 instances breed more like rabbits than Homo sapiens. Each pregnancy produces multiple
06:27young and gestations that only last for a few weeks. Once born, their young only take an average of two
06:33years to reach full maturity. Furthermore, their anomalous genes can't be diluted or recessed. Now, I don't
06:39normally discuss incest in such depth in my videos, thankfully, but the necessity of doing so in this
06:44one may threaten the monetization of this particular file. If you'd like to offset the effects of this,
06:49I'd very much appreciate you subscribing to the channel and hitting the bell so you never miss
06:53another video. Anyway, back to the incest. I'm so sorry. So while breeding between SCP-3288 is possible,
07:01it always results in SCP-3288 children. Combine how quickly SCP-3288 reproduces and their excessive
07:09cruelty and hunger for human flesh, scientists theorize that if left alone, SCP-3288 could wipe out
07:15the rest of the human race, either by out-competing us for resources or simply by murdering and eating
07:21us all. Current Foundation protocol is to terminate on site, and it's imperative to keep whatever
07:26individuals of the species we can't kill confined to their underground hives, away from major population
07:31centers. While SCP-3288 are extremely strong and resistant to disease, they can still be killed by
07:37weapons in the same way as Homo sapiens. In addition to this, their lack of pigmentation makes them
07:42nearly blind and extremely sensitive to bright light, making them unable to go to the surface
07:47during the day or stand the presence of any artificial lighting. The Foundation first became aware of these
07:52creatures when embedded agents within the Viennese police noticed a strange pattern of disappearances
07:57and deaths in the city. The victims were all from vulnerable underclasses, most of them being sex
08:02workers, unhoused people, and unsupervised children. Those that weren't were usually last
08:07seen in a state of extreme intoxication. All of the disappearances happened at night, and all of them
08:13happened near entry points to the city's sewers and underground tunnels. Along with data on this
08:18pattern, SCP agents gained access to reports on human remains that hadn't been released to the public
08:23for fear of starting mass panic. The police were fairly certain the remains were the work of a serial
08:28killer, but some of the details on the autopsy didn't add up. One expert said that the wound seemed
08:33most consistent with an attack by a wild hyena, but closer analysis found that the strange bite marks
08:38contained traces of extremely corrupted human DNA. Furthermore, bite mark analysis suggested that there
08:44had been more than one attacker. The attackers were classified as anomalous and given the SCP-3288
08:50designation. To figure out what was going on, the Foundation sent in Mobile Task Force Sigma-6,
08:56the Hellsingers, to patrol around the Leopoldstadt district, a neighborhood that had seen the highest
09:00number of disappearances. While out on patrol, MTF agents heard screams coming from the canal
09:06and requested backup before going to investigate. By the time backup arrived, the agents were already
09:12dead and their bodies were left in the same mauled state as the murder victims. But one agent, Sigma-609,
09:19managed to hit his killer with a tracking dart before succumbing to his injuries, allowing the team to
09:23track the creature deep into the tunnels under the city. Like many European capitals,
09:28Vienna is built over an elaborate system of catacombs, sewers, basements, and wine cellars,
09:33which range in age from medieval to those built in the 19th century. When they located the instance of
09:38SCP-3288 which had taken out their task force, it was in a seemingly long abandoned crypt that wasn't
09:44marked on any official maps, marked by a statue of a veiled woman holding a finger to her lips, and
09:49on the
09:50wall, a plaque showing a roaring lion against a yellow background, the royal crest of the House of
09:55Habsburg, and the motto, Ad Puritatum Sanguinis, for the purity of the blood. This was the first major
10:02clue the Foundation got as to the origin of the murderous new species they'd just discovered, and if
10:07you know your history, you've probably already guessed it. Once inside the crypt, operatives followed
10:13a series of tunnels that led into a decrepit, bloody replica of the Swiss wing of Hofburg Palace.
10:18They explored the castle further, finding an extensive library of texts on alchemy and the occult.
10:23Eventually, they found a grand ballroom, where a large group of SCP-3288 were holding a celebration
10:29of some sort, involving torture, cannibalism, and even worse forms of depravity. Sitting on a throne
10:35at the end of the hall was an enormously fat creature, designated SCP-3288-Alpha, believed to be
10:42their king, wearing a red veil and an antique torture device as a crown. While the violence
10:47continued, a string quartet played for the guests' amusement. Eventually, the creatures noticed the
10:53MTF operatives, and all hell broke loose. The creatures attacked, mauling and devouring many of
10:59the operatives. The only reason any of them were able to survive was thanks to the brave sacrifice of
11:04Agent Sigma-618, who activated an explosive which took out himself along with a large number of the
11:10SCP-3288 instances. The entrances and exits to the chamber were sealed, and SCP-3288-Alpha was captured,
11:18requiring the use of a specialized crane to move it to the surface. Once the creature was removed,
11:24the underground castle was swiftly filled with concrete. In Foundation custody, SCP-3288-Alpha was
11:31initially violent, but immediately stopped when, interviewing researcher Dr. Moser,
11:35blasted him with a light measuring approximately 32,000 lumens. Apparently, among SCP-3288 instances,
11:43hierarchies are enforced by physical pain, as SCP-3288 completely submitted after being burnt.
11:49When Dr. Moser asked for his name, the creature identified himself as Emperor Maximilian von Habsburg,
11:55King of Austria. The House of Habsburg were one of the most
11:59powerful and long-lasting dynasties in Western history, who ruled over parts of Europe and the
12:04Americas from the Middle Ages all the way up to the start of the 20th century. The family split
12:10into several parallel dynasties, most notably in the 16th century when, after the abdication of
12:15Charles V, the family split into Spanish and Austrian branches. Among the Habsburg lineage were
12:20many Italian dukes and lords, emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, then Austria, then Austria-Hungary,
12:26kings of Spain, Croatia, Sicily, Portugal, Bohemia, Slavonia, Dalmatia, and Sicily, and even one emperor
12:33of Mexico. Though they no longer possess any governmental powers, descendants of the Austrian
12:38Habsburgs still hold high status today as the overseers of many Austrian Catholic orders, like the
12:43Order of the Golden Fleece, the Order of the Starry Cross, and the Royal Order of St. George. But there's
12:48another thing that the Habsburgs were famous, or perhaps infamous for. Because of how successful they were as
12:54a dynasty, for much of European history, almost every royal family had at least some Habsburg blood.
13:00And since most of them were unwilling to give up any of their power and influence to someone from
13:05outside the bloodline, Habsburg nobles typically ended up in consanguineous marriages, that is,
13:10marriages between two people who are already blood-related. This resulted in many Habsburgs
13:16having poor health and noticeable deformities, most famously perhaps being the so-called Habsburg chin,
13:21which you can see reflected in most of the family's portraits and statues.
13:26It's always been general knowledge that breeding with anyone closer than maybe a second cousin
13:30would result in unhealthy offspring, but to royals throughout history, inbreeding was considered a
13:36necessary political practice that consolidated power within the bloodline. It wasn't pretty,
13:41and it resulted in a lot of deaths, but that was better than having to split your fortune with a
13:45person below your noble station. So during the Enlightenment, when the Western world started turning to
13:50science to solve our problems, the members of House Habsburg began to wonder, could there be a way
13:55to solve this problem? Leopold I, in particular, being a self-styled alchemist with a keen interest
14:03in the natural world, wrote extensively about this in his personal journals, which I have been granted
14:07access to by the Foundation Historical Archive. After the death of Charles II of Spain, the last male of
14:13the Spanish Habsburg line, Leopold started worrying that the same health problems and mental
14:18degradation that plagued his cousin for his entire life would eventually befall him as well, leading
14:23to the complete extinction of House Habsburg. In his search for some kind of treatment, he turned to
14:28alchemy and eventually to sarcosism. In his journal, he describes a woman of rare, almost beguiling beauty,
14:35older than she appears, for she speaks with the experience of a hundred lifetimes on subjects I had
14:40only just begun to grasp. We don't know who this woman was, as she is never mentioned by name,
14:46but through working with her, Leopold I experimented with human genes and learned how to alter them.
14:51Eventually, he was successful. However, the transmutation wasn't complete. The price the
14:56Sarkic priestess asked for was one that Leopold was unwilling to give up. She asked that he abdicate
15:02and return his wealth to the people. He refused, and though she tried to fight back, she was ultimately
15:08executed as a witch. But his betrayal of the priestess would come back to bite him. Leopold wished,
15:13thanks to the anomalous genes he'd engineered into his DNA, his descendants would be fertile and
15:18prosperous for centuries to come. But with each generation, more and more of them would be born
15:24as misshapen, flesh-hungry monsters. These monstrous offspring were kept separate from the rest of the
15:30family and moved into an underground palace, where they continued to breed with each other,
15:34producing the subspecies that would go on to be known as SCP-3288. As with any royal scandal,
15:40the family went to great lengths to assure that SCP-3288 were kept both comfortable and completely
15:46out of public view. The underground castle built to house them, for example, was originally a
15:51one-to-one replica of the above-ground palace in Vienna. Servants were sent regularly to restock
15:56food supplies as well as providing the creatures with music, reading material, a menagerie of exotic
16:01animals, and all the latest fashions. Additionally, the servants would also tend to their more
16:06depraved appetites, sending down both dead bodies and living prisoners for the creatures to butcher
16:12and mutilate as they see fit. However, following the First World War and the collapse of the Austrian
16:17monarchy, the underground castle was abandoned by its above-ground caretakers. Because of this,
16:22in the centuries since, the instances of SCP-3288 have broken loose and routinely venture above ground
16:29after sunset to hunt their own prey and colonize new parts of the continent. The Foundation has developed
16:34an extensive map to track the spread of the species, however, it's estimated that we only have
16:39knowledge of half of the existing settlements. The desire to consolidate power is one of the most
16:44destructive forces on the planet. In trying to remove the biggest barrier to his family controlling the
16:49entire continent of Europe, Leopold I created a new species that, if left unchecked, could wipe out the
16:56human race. In a way, that's no different to what some of his Habsburg cousins did in Africa and South
17:00America through colonialism, and it's certainly no different to what world leaders are doing today
17:05when they kneecap solutions for climate change just so they can get more donations from oil and gas
17:10companies. People in power have always been willing to doom everyone else to keep themselves at the top.
17:15In his interview with Dr. Moser, SCP-3288-Alpha summed it up pretty succinctly himself.
17:21We eat peasants. That is the nature of nobility. What else would be the point?
17:26So if there's anything at all we can learn from these cannibalistic monsters, maybe it's this.
17:31Eat the rich. Might just be a pithy slogan, but there's a reason it caught on.
17:36If the rich got the chance, they'd definitely be eating you.
17:40Want more unkillable beings that are hungry for your flesh?
17:43Thankfully, we have no shortage of that. Perhaps start with SCP-082, Fernand the Cannibal.
