00:22look down on the man-made island of Our Lady, the Ile-Notre-Dame, the site of the World's
00:27Fair in 67, the Summer Olympic Games in 1976, and for the 27th year this weekend, the Canadian
00:33round of the Formula One World Championship, the Grand Prix of Canada.
00:37Hello, everybody.
00:38I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:40As always, it's time for the second live practice session on this Friday.
00:44As you can see, a warm, hazy summer day obscuring the charms of beautiful Montreal across the
00:50mighty St. Lawrence River.
00:52Here's a look at the highlights of the morning practice.
00:54There is American Scott Speed, the young Californian, the first American in 12 years in a Formula
00:59One car, and he did well, 15th of 23 drivers quicker than his teammates.
01:04And having, going through the casino hairpin, I had a little bit of a moment there, but
01:07old Scott Speed, he did a pretty good job this morning.
01:10He did, and then Fernando Alonso out in the Renault R25 after his success the previous round.
01:16There is Kimi Raikkonen after the disaster of the previous round when his McLaren suspension
01:21failed on the final lap at the Nürburgring.
01:23Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world champion, went out.
01:26Initially set the fastest time, but that period of the practice session, he ended up fifth
01:31on the morning.
01:32Then Zonta out in the TF105, the Toyota chassis.
01:38Second of that session, 16.5.8.
01:40Zonta with 27 laps, most of all drivers.
01:44This, of course, is the day for the third drivers, the Friday drivers to shine.
01:47And here is McLaren's.
01:49Pedro de la Rosa of Spain, a 116.415, and 26 laps of important work in the books for
01:56his team.
01:57Here's a look at the times.
01:58Kimi Raikkonen up there once again.
02:00The fin has been blisteringly fast for the last four Grand Prix weekends, but he doesn't
02:06have a whole lot to show for it.
02:07Now 32 points behind Fernando Alonso in the world championship.
02:12We wanted to start now SLS Peak 2 at target plus 500.
02:18And it's two time laps, please.
02:20Can we do tracking on the in-lap after turn 10 in fifth gear?
02:25And you just stay in throttle one for that.
02:28As you can hear, we have team radios once again after several races without it.
02:34That signifies an FOM Formula One management broadcast, the in-house television arm of
02:39Bernie Ecclestone's Grand Prix Empire.
02:42That, of course, was the Renault team.
02:48The circuit here, the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, named for the patron saint of Canadian motor
02:54racing and the late Ferrari driver in Formula One.
02:572.709 miles around and newly resurfaced this year, which raises lots of questions, Steve.
03:04Yeah, it's made it a lot smoother.
03:05You can see that coming down the long straight there.
03:07De La Rossa, as you're watching in the McLaren, 320 clicks down that straight.
03:12It was pretty bumpy around there.
03:13But, of course, as always, when you lay new asphalt, it totally destroys any grip that
03:18was there before.
03:20Completely green track, therefore.
03:22And, of course, there'll be a lot of oil and resin coming up through the asphalt, which
03:25has caught the teams off guard.
03:27We'll have to wait until the end of the sessions today to find out really where we are with
03:31the grip from this new asphalt, whether or not the teams are happy, and really whether
03:35or not the tire suppliers are happy with what we've found.
03:38And, of course, there's forecasted rain potential this weekend, even though it is just in maybe
03:43thunderstorm form.
03:44That will keep washing the track away.
03:45So every time they lay some rubber down here, there's a good chance it's going to get washed
03:48away.
03:49On board with De La Rosa.
03:56That's an example of what Montreal is all about.
03:58High-speed sections with very heavy braking.
04:01Quite a good usage of the curbs as well, so the car's still going to be set up for that.
04:05Good traction.
04:06Obviously, you need pretty good traction here at some very slow corners.
04:10Need very good mechanical grip around here.
04:12The casino hairpin or the X-Pit hairpin.
04:16And then a long run down here, back to the start, back to the Pit S.
04:21On this on-board shot with De La Rosa.
04:23Just look at the front brake that's on the McLaren.
04:25Quite small, quite enclosed.
04:27Very heavy braking circuit around here.
04:29You remember last year, Williams had those very illegal brakes on the car, about 20mm,
04:34nearly an inch too wide to the regulations.
04:37You get a chance to see an on-board shot with Williams later.
04:39Again, just have a look at the size of the brake ducts that Williams have used.
04:43They have got some co-hostial ducts on the car.
04:46I just hope that this time they have measured and made sure they're inside the regulations
04:49because they're still very big.
04:54That's here where you use the curbs both sides under the exit.
05:16320 clicks, by the way, is a tidy 198 miles an hour in change.
05:20It is bloody fast along that casino straight on the back side.
05:25And, of course, as you can see from this shot, there's not a lot of run-up air on this
05:28track anyway.
05:31It was Giancarlo Fisichella, who won the season opener of Melbourne, Australia,
05:34has had virtually nothing but bad luck since then.
05:37The Renault team is very concerned about getting that car to the finish well up into the points
05:42for the all-important Constructors' Championship.
05:45Right now, Fernando Alonso is basically carrying the colors for Renault.
05:53And, of course, his team-mate has gone on to have four wins after that Fisichella win.
05:58So the team got five wins in the season of the day.
06:01Fisichella is a pretty awesome performance.
06:03Everybody was expecting the Renault.
06:04Look at that.
06:05329 kilometers down the straight.
06:07That's getting on with the program.
06:11One of the Ferrari's going out to the right of your screen.
06:13Here comes Alonso, I mean Fisichella.
06:15Now, that's funny.
06:16In spite of a high top speed, lost out time in that third sector.
06:20204 miles an hour in the speed track.
06:25Flavio Briatore.
06:26Things could hardly be going better for Renault right now.
06:29And when asked whether he had any sympathy for Kimi Räikkönen at the Nurburgring two weeks ago,
06:33he said, of course not.
06:37Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
06:41is brought to you by New Mobile One Extended Performance,
06:44the oil that's changing oil.
06:48Across these bricks, men...
06:52Welcome back to live Friday practice
06:55from the Formula One Grand Prix of Canada weekend.
06:58Round 8 of the Formula One World Championship
07:00on board with world champion Michael Schumacher.
07:08Michael's fifth in the morning session
07:09at a 116.872 with 12 laps complete.
07:13Here's a look at Nick Heidfeld.
07:15They had a pretty interesting day already in the Williams BMW.
07:22There's a look at Rubens Barakello
07:24sliding the Ferrari through the start-finish chicane.
07:28Followed by Kimi Räikkönen, both down off the track there.
07:32And there is Takuma Sato in the BAR Honda,
07:36who just went to P1, as you see.
07:38Well, we have a moment, David.
07:39Let's take a closer look at the...
07:41Whoa!
07:42What do you know?
07:43Renault go...
07:43Jordan going backwards.
07:45Lorraine Karnikeyan.
07:49Let's see if we can see.
07:50That's down in the Senna Complex,
07:52the Turn 2 area.
07:55Oh, a fair old medley of traffic there,
07:59just to train.
08:00Karatekayan had a huge war of words
08:02with Jacques Villeneuve coming in here.
08:04Villeneuve alleged the Indian driver
08:06blocked him at the Nurburgring two weeks ago.
08:09Karatekayan had an interesting response.
08:11I did not do it.
08:14Well, maybe once.
08:15And I'd do it again.
08:17This, of course, coming from Jacques Villeneuve,
08:18who blocked Alonso for about 25 laps at Melbourne
08:21at the opening.
08:22Whoa!
08:22There's what happened to it.
08:23We see it again.
08:24Going into that Turn 1 complex,
08:25of course, the Senna Complex.
08:27Just lost it under braking,
08:28got a bit twitchy.
08:29We've seen a Jordan looking a bit twitchy before,
08:31I believe, from time to time.
08:34That pollen and a very small leaf
08:37that blows around here at Montreal.
08:39Does it every year?
08:39Of course, same time of year.
08:40and it's a problem for the radiator cooling dump.
08:44You'll see the team's clearing that out all the while.
08:46Back to the box then.
08:48We need you to turn the auxiliary oil tank on as well.
08:52Turn the auxiliary oil tank on
08:54by moving the switch to your right
08:56for the down position.
09:02Aux oil on.
09:03Aux oil on.
09:05One of the most confusing things I found
09:07when I first came to America.
09:08You heard them say turn it on
09:09by switching the switch down.
09:11But of course, all English switches are down for on.
09:14In America, they're all up for on.
09:16And when I first drove my Formula 5000 car here,
09:18when the ignition switch was up,
09:20it took me forever to get you to turn the damn thing on
09:23by turning it up.
09:25And if you could, please, Lorraine, keep it going pointy in first.
09:28Talk about driver's excuse.
09:32Couldn't forget the ignition switch.
09:33You left the mechanics and put the switch right side up.
09:36It's just that when in a moment of stress,
09:37when you're trying to switch things off,
09:39you're thinking, which way is this switch supposed to go?
09:41We could have had a really quick lap there.
09:42We just couldn't get the car started.
09:44All right, boys.
09:45Let's talk about the track now with our Porsche track map.
09:48David, get it right side up, please.
09:50Well, as you can see, it's a long, thin old track.
09:53It's just been resurfaced,
09:54so it's got rid of a lot of bumps.
09:55You're going to need some chassis change from last year's setup.
09:59Down at that center complex,
10:00doing close to 200,
10:02into the hairpin before that,
10:03before the pits,
10:04as we've already seen, 204.
10:05So, as Steve alluded to it on,
10:07very, very hard on brakes.
10:08You need a lot of chassis,
10:11good compliance here to get good grip out of all those slow corners,
10:13and you need good aero to get it down those long, fast straights.
10:16So, all in all, a pretty complex track.
10:18Two or three places you can overtake here on as well.
10:21Of course, some places you can't go off anywhere,
10:23because as you can see,
10:24the walls are right there everywhere, Steve.
10:26They are, yeah.
10:27Thinking about how hard it is on brakes,
10:29and again, you may have to keep playing with your video or TiVo
10:32to pick up these shots,
10:33but just looking at the Ferrari earlier on,
10:35talking about the brake ducts,
10:36Ferrari must be fairly confident with their brake cooling.
10:39They've even got a little bit of red tape over the brake ducts
10:41to blank some of the cooling effects off.
10:43So, teams trying different constructions of the carbon disc as well here
10:48to try and get the thing to last a lot longer.
10:50It is Canada and Imola,
10:52the two hardest braking circuits on the calendar this year.
10:57Big crowd on hand for Friday,
10:59as you can see from those stands,
11:00pretty full down at the Casino Hairpin.
11:02This is that long run,
11:02over 200 miles an hour into the braking zone for the hair pit,
11:06or the complex before the pit.
11:08And again, I just want you to look at how small the brakes are on this Toyota.
11:11Remember, these were a little bit illegal last year by a couple of miles.
11:14And when we see the Williams car,
11:16you'll see what I'm talking about.
11:17They're very, very big.
11:21Big crowd on hand and a big buzz in Montreal.
11:24The hotels are packed.
11:25Keep in mind, this is a race that was on the critical list for quite a while
11:29when it came to Formula One scheduling a few years back.
11:31We'll be back from Montreal in a moment.
11:36There'll be five laps to go next time by,
11:38and Kimi Räikkönen, the race leader,
11:40is losing gobs of time to the second place,
11:43Renault of Fernando Alonso.
11:45Look at that right front.
11:46Look at that.
11:47There's something flapping over.
11:48He's looking for a tire.
11:49Kimi Räikkönen there.
11:51I tell you what,
11:51he's hearts in his mouth,
11:53but there's no way he's going to stop now.
11:54Two laps to go,
11:55two seconds between them.
11:57Oh, no!
11:58It's off!
11:58It's gone!
12:00Wow!
12:00The suspension throws.
12:04Oh, my God!
12:07Last lap!
12:08Well, that is motor racing for you right there.
12:11And here is your winner.
12:13Fernando Alonso and Renault
12:15pick up their fourth victory of the year together,
12:18fifth of the year for the team.
12:20Well, a huge swing in the world championship.
12:23Wow, what a dramatic conclusion.
12:27I love it when a plan comes together
12:30as you watch in a nutshell
12:31the story of the European Grand Prix
12:33at Germany's Nürburgring two weeks ago.
12:35Here is Fernando Alonso,
12:37who's just gone P1
12:38with the fastest lap of the weekend thus far,
12:40a 116.215.
12:43And his last lap was also the fastest lap,
12:45so he stayed at the top of the sheets,
12:47and that's only his eighth lap all day.
12:50Everybody else is out this morning.
12:51Alonso never turned a lap this morning,
12:54other than his installation lap,
12:55but he never did a timeline.
12:57Pit now, please, mate, pit now.
12:59Pit now.
13:07Alonso supremely confident this morning,
13:09not turning a wheel,
13:10and quite rightly so in just eight laps.
13:12It brings up an interesting point, though.
13:14I mean, given the two-engine rule
13:16and the fact that you had one set of tires,
13:18you have all this work to do on Friday,
13:19it takes tremendous discipline from a driver
13:22to get his work done
13:24in as few laps as may be available to him.
13:26I mean, they basically sent him out
13:27for two or three hot laps,
13:29went to the top of the timesheets,
13:30and now he has to pit.
13:32But I'm sure he'd rather
13:33just be pounding around out there.
13:35I guess they've learned all they need to learn,
13:37but whatever,
13:39that Renault this year
13:40is proving to be monumentally difficult to beat.
13:43They have a great shot
13:45of the new sort of pit now out.
13:49Coming straight across the grass to turn two.
13:53You see Felipe Massa in the Sauber.
13:55Ricardo Zonta, meanwhile,
13:56is on a hot lap,
13:57currently sixth,
13:58but he just set the fastest middle sector
14:01as the teams continue to work with fuel loads
14:05and tire components.
14:07I think they're going to be struggling today,
14:09but for this choice of tires,
14:11remember a couple of weeks ago
14:12of the Nürburgring,
14:14Frank Derny from Williams was saying,
14:15we were debating on what tire compound to use
14:17until 11 o'clock on that Friday evening.
14:20Well, they stopped running
14:21in the middle of the afternoon,
14:22but here, because of this new asphalt
14:24and the conditions changing all the while,
14:26it must be very difficult
14:27for the engineers and the driver
14:29to come together and say,
14:30that's the compound we need here.
14:32Which is why these Friday drivers,
14:34the third drivers who perform Fridays only,
14:36are so important to the teams
14:37that are allowed to use them.
14:39Those, of course,
14:40are the six teams
14:41that did not finish in the top four
14:42in the World Championship
14:43in the previous season.
14:45And which, of course,
14:46this year includes McLaren,
14:48and a lot of people
14:49have been driving about the fact
14:50that McLaren, of all teams,
14:51should be allowed to have
14:52that third driver out,
14:53and they said,
14:53well, that serves the rules.
14:55Renault had a third driver
14:56all last year
14:57and learned an incredible amount
14:58with that third driver
14:59in the 2004 season.
15:01This weekend,
15:02there were only five teams
15:02with a third driver.
15:03Jordan lost the right
15:04to have a third driver this weekend
15:06when they mixed their tire sets
15:07two weeks ago
15:08with the Nürburgring.
15:10They appealed
15:11to have the penalty removed
15:13by one week
15:13to the U.S. Grand Prix
15:14at Indianapolis next weekend
15:16because Canada
15:17is the home
15:18of team owner
15:21Mr. Schneider.
15:22Bon point,
15:23as they say up here.
15:24Well, but they were denied,
15:26so there is no third Jordan
15:27here in Canada.
15:29I think that's absolutely right.
15:30I don't think you can have
15:31the teams debating
15:32to the FIA.
15:33You know, can we delay
15:34that penalty until after
15:35we've won the championship?
15:36How about to 2006?
15:37Do you mind if we do that?
15:40Felipe Massa
15:41is back in the garage.
15:42He could be powered
15:43by a BMW engine next year.
15:46More on that story
15:47when we return
15:48live to Friday practice
15:49at the Circuit
15:50Gilles Villeneuve
15:51in Montreal.
15:55Speed Channel's coverage
15:56of the FIA Formula One
15:58World Championship
15:59is brought to you
16:00by new Mobile One
16:01extended performance,
16:02the oil that's changing oil.
16:06Welcome back live
16:07to the Circuit
16:08Gilles Villeneuve
16:09in Montreal.
16:10Friday practice
16:11for the Canadian Grand Prix.
16:12There's Jenson Button
16:14sitting in the BAR Honda garage.
16:17He may well be
16:18a Williams driver
16:19next year,
16:20but I hesitate to say
16:21BMW Williams
16:22because that team,
16:23the Sauber
16:24in the hands of
16:24Jacques Villeneuve,
16:26is looking increasingly
16:28likely to be
16:29BMW powered next year.
16:30Sir Frank Williams
16:31and his technical director
16:32Patrick Head
16:33have taken
16:34broad and fairly harsh
16:35punches at BMW
16:37in the press
16:37in the last week or so.
16:40claiming BMW
16:40for claiming
16:41the engine
16:42is always perfect
16:42and it's always
16:43the chassis
16:43that's at fault,
16:44claiming they're
16:45being disingenuous,
16:46lacking character
16:47and so on.
16:49So that marriage
16:50began back in 2000
16:52appears to be
16:52headed for the rocks.
16:54I saw that comment
16:55of Patrick Head
16:56about Mario Tyson
16:58being basically
16:59with no character
17:00and being dishonest
17:00and here they are
17:01in the pit together.
17:02I mean,
17:02boy, how do you get
17:03around that one
17:03when you're standing
17:04talking about
17:05the performance
17:05of the car
17:06that afternoon?
17:12On board with
17:13Jacqueline.
17:23I know spats
17:24between constructor
17:26and engine supplier.
17:27Nothing.
17:27We're talking about
17:28it's always happened,
17:29right?
17:29But what you don't do,
17:31what you should never do,
17:32really,
17:32should never get out
17:33and should never be
17:34put in public
17:35domain.
17:36I mean,
17:36teams,
17:36of course,
17:37they're always
17:37pushing each other
17:38along and the engine
17:40suppliers were saying,
17:41you know,
17:41we could have won
17:41that race
17:42if your chassis
17:43hadn't been just
17:43designed like a brick
17:44and that goes on,
17:46of course,
17:46but once it gets out
17:48in the public domain,
17:49you know that
17:49they're in trouble
17:50with each other.
17:50I remember testing
17:51for Aston Martin
17:52many years ago
17:53in Alola chassis
17:54and I mean,
17:54they blamed each other
17:55for everything.
17:56The chassis wouldn't
17:57let the air
17:58into the engine
17:58and the engines
18:00laugh at them.
18:01I don't know.
18:08I don't got new
18:09down there.
18:10Moves up to 15.
18:12Pedro De La Rosa
18:13leads the session.
18:14He has now jumped
18:15almost a full second
18:16from his previous best time
18:18to a 115.280.
18:20Here's Patrick Lemarie
18:22in the gray shirt.
18:23Long time friend
18:24of Jacques Villeneuve.
18:26That's Craig Pollock,
18:27his manager
18:28and former investor
18:29in BAR Honda.
18:32Started out as Jacques'
18:34PE teacher,
18:35if you will,
18:36at his private school
18:37in Switzerland.
18:40And all I'd say
18:41old Craig Pollock
18:42has done very well.
18:43He's done extremely well,
18:44especially at the BAR
18:45as did Jacques Villeneuve.
18:47Also a former investor
18:48in the PKV Champ Car team.
18:50The Champ Car World Series
18:51is the only other series
18:52to race on this circuit.
18:53The temporary circuit
18:54on an island park
18:56in the St. Lawrence River.
18:58The Champ Car World Series
18:59will be here later this year.
19:00And that is always
19:00another big racing weekend
19:02in Montreal.
19:04Talking about the
19:05new asphalt
19:06and resurface work
19:07that's gone on
19:08has made the track
19:09a lot smoother.
19:10But I noticed
19:10earlier on one of the shots
19:11just as the cars
19:12go under the bridge
19:13around turn eight,
19:14turn nine
19:14on the dive down
19:15towards the hair pit
19:17there's a big streak
19:18of yellow dust
19:21on the ground
19:21there which is
19:22caused by those
19:22FIA legality planks.
19:24So the cars are
19:25bottoming out
19:25somewhere on this track.
19:26I'm sure the drivers
19:27have been complaining
19:28with that.
19:28Well, look, whoa!
19:30There goes Yano truly
19:31because it affects
19:32that eight, nine,
19:33corner you're just talking
19:33about.
19:34I think one of the reasons
19:34that yellow plank
19:35is because as the
19:36bumps have gone away
19:37they're probably running
19:38the cars lower
19:39than they've ever run
19:40them here before.
19:40He's trying to run
19:41them lower.
19:42That's what they're doing.
19:42Because you can do it
19:43without the bumps
19:44and maybe they're just
19:45going a bit too low.
19:46Yeah.
19:49The two Toyotas
19:50together there
19:51being overhauled
19:52by a Renault.
19:57Giancarlo Fistichella
19:58in the Renault
19:58is on a flyer.
20:00Currently sixth.
20:02There's two good
20:02sectors in the bag.
20:04We saw Villeneuve
20:05a moment ago.
20:06Of course,
20:06this is a home race
20:07for Jacques Villeneuve.
20:08He comes in
20:09amidst much dissatisfaction
20:11with his performance
20:12with the Sauber team.
20:13In eight starts
20:14here in Canada,
20:15Villeneuve has
20:16only finished three times.
20:18His best finish
20:19second in his...
20:20Oh, there's Scott
20:21Speed, the American.
20:23Looks like he's
20:24high-centered
20:25on that curb.
20:27Hopefully he hasn't
20:28stalled.
20:30Well, at some point
20:31he'll have to switch
20:31the engine off
20:32because of overheating
20:33problems.
20:33There's just no
20:34marshals there.
20:35If there was someone
20:35that could come to
20:36his aid and assistance
20:37and push him back,
20:37it'd be okay.
20:38But that's turn four.
20:40Now you see that's...
20:41Yeah, you see that's...
20:42Well, I think it was
20:43Steve coming out
20:44of the rads.
20:45This is Trulli's off,
20:46which was down
20:47in turn nine.
20:49Lurching across the grass
20:50and coming on
20:50from behind those curbs.
20:52Here's Speed.
20:53Here's Speed.
20:54Sideways already
20:55in one corner
20:55and then...
20:57Kind of lost
20:57that underbrake,
20:58I think.
20:58And there you see
20:59what I mean
20:59about coming back
21:00over those curbs
21:01because it's high...
21:01It's high-siding him.
21:04It was 20th at the time.
21:06Well, that is coming out
21:07of the less coming
21:07out of the left front.
21:08Brake.
21:09Yeah.
21:13Well, looks like
21:13they're going to
21:14winch it away.
21:15They'll try to push it off.
21:16Well, they're asking
21:17for the crane.
21:17You see the master
21:18at the back there
21:19sigling for the crane.
21:20There's a big overhead crane
21:20that'll drop down
21:22the webbing strap
21:23to be able to pull
21:23the car away.
21:26Very disappointed
21:27with Scott Speed.
21:29Yeah.
21:29First American
21:30since Michael Andretti
21:31in 1993.
21:32So we're looking
21:32at 13 years.
21:34He was doing
21:34a pretty good job
21:35earlier on, wasn't he?
21:36He was.
21:36He was quicker
21:37than his teammates.
21:38Clean and cool thought.
21:40Go on, that push.
21:41Go on.
21:43Not that heavy.
21:44He is really stuck.
21:46I can't imagine
21:47it's that hard
21:48to push over that curb.
21:51Thing only weighs
21:521,500 pounds, boys.
21:54Although I imagine
21:55these V10s going by
21:56about 10 feet
21:57from your right here
21:58might be a bit
21:58distracting.
22:00Well, they're waiting
22:00for instructions
22:01to cross the track
22:02as to when it's safe
22:03to do it.
22:05Kimi Raikkonen
22:06currently running
22:06third spot.
22:07Obviously won't be able
22:08to improve on that
22:09this lap.
22:10This will be affecting
22:11everyone's...
22:12Oh, he did get off
22:13the curb
22:13and almost collected
22:14the number two man
22:15of the championship.
22:16Number three
22:17in this session.
22:18Scott Speed
22:19back on track.
22:20We'll be back
22:20in a moment.
22:50We'll be back
22:50in a moment.
23:01Good to be back in America.
23:04Thank you, sir, Jackie, and happy birthday.
23:06It'll be good to have you back in America for the U.S. Grand Prix.
23:09And, of course, Speed Channel will be your home for U.S. GP coverage
23:12starting just one week from now, Friday the 17th.
23:15We'll begin at 12 noon Eastern time with four hours of coverage,
23:18including the two Friday practice sessions, both of them coming to you this week.
23:22That's Saturday, the 18th.
23:23We'll start the day off at 1 in the afternoon Eastern
23:25with coverage of the second Saturday practice session,
23:27and that'll lead us straight up into qualifying.
23:30Coverage of qualifying for the U.S. GP will begin live at 2 p.m.
23:34And, finally, Sunday the 19th at 1.30 p.m. Eastern,
23:37Speed Channel is proud to bring you live coverage
23:40of the sixth United States Formula One Grand Prix
23:42at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
23:45We hope to see you there.
23:51Back live for Friday practice from the Circuit-Gilles Villeneuve.
23:56Speed Channel will be live and in person at the U.S. Grand Prix.
24:00Actually, Thursday, we'll be out behind the pagoda,
24:03out on the plaza, taking your questions
24:05with all of our announcers, plus some special guests.
24:08Should be a great day, and we hope you'll be there.
24:10And if not, we hope you'll be watching on Speed Channel.
24:13Jack Villeneuve locking up that right front tire.
24:17As I mentioned, he's under a lot of fire from his team.
24:20His team owner, Peter Sauber, a Swiss who is normally
24:24the most diplomatic of men, said simply,
24:27Jack is driving the car too slowly.
24:29We have to figure out what's wrong.
24:32Jack immediately responded by saying the car was slow,
24:35but, of course, you're always a bit caught between a rock and a hard place there
24:39if the other car is always consistently quicker than you are.
24:42Yeah, as I started to point out before Scott Speed
24:46hung up his car on the curving,
24:48Villeneuve has only finished this race three times in eight starts on home soil,
24:52only once in the points, and that was his debut back in 1996
24:56when he finished second in Williams.
24:59Christian Cleen.
25:01Christian Cleen back in the car now for quite a long time.
25:04The Red Bull people had this crossing driver,
25:08the two new drivers, Vittantonio Liuzzi and Christian Cleen,
25:12which I thought was very disturbing for both the drivers.
25:15Well, finally, the Red Bull management decided
25:18they are going to keep Christian Cleen in the car now
25:20for the foreseeable future.
25:22And here, of course, with Coulthard, there's the graphic to show.
25:25So, car 18, very impressed with this team, I must say.
25:31I thought with the management changes they had last year,
25:33they'd be right at the back.
25:34I expected them to be fighting along with Jordan
25:36for, you know, no points right at the back of the grid,
25:39and Minardi looking good as a result,
25:40but, boy, oh, boy, they came straight out of the box fighting.
25:44A lot of it, I think, down to that TJ 2005,
25:47the reworked Coulthard engine gave them a lot of very reliable horsepower.
25:51Big horsepower increase, something like 60 brake
25:53from the 2004 V10 to the 2005,
25:57which is extremely useful, obviously.
26:00But that said, the chassis itself is working very well.
26:03Well, I think exactly that.
26:05This is the new, this would have been the new Jaguar chassis this year,
26:08and obviously a lot better than everybody thought it was good at this.
26:10Absolutely, yeah.
26:11Cosworth says they're going to have more horsepower for this team
26:13for the Indianapolis race next week.
26:16And you'll see Scott Speed in the car on Friday
26:18at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
26:21That'll be very cool.
26:22It'll be very cool to listen to that engine going down the long straight,
26:25wouldn't it, at Indianapolis?
26:26That'd be very cool to hear a grandstand full of people
26:28supporting the first American in Formula One
26:30in more than a decade as well.
26:32David Coulthard currently 18th on the grid,
26:35but of course, this is a practice day.
26:37He's not going for outright speed.
26:39Having said that, right now,
26:40McLarens are 1, 2, and 4 on the timesheets.
26:43De La Rosa, Montoya, and Kimi Raikkonen,
26:46broken up only by Ricardo Zonta's Friday-only Toyota.
26:51Oh, Zonta and De La Rosa have done some laps between them.
26:54He won now for De La Rosa.
26:56There's a new number for De La Rosa, lower right,
26:58at 1-14, 6-6-2.
27:01The lap record, or the qualifying record,
27:03set by Ralph Schumacher last year at 1-12, 275.
27:08But again, the track has been resurfaced.
27:13Whoa, what a career rise for Christian Horner right there.
27:16Yeah, running a Formula 3000 team for a few years.
27:19Now, here he is in Formula One.
27:23There's Kimi Raikkonen,
27:25who never for one moment, at least publicly,
27:27with second-guessed the decision he and his McLaren team arrived at
27:31to stay on track and try to win two weeks ago.
27:46Live Friday practice for the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix
27:49continues here on Speed Channel.
27:51I'm Bob Varsha with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs.
27:54We've not seen the world graphics as much as we normally do,
27:57so let's set the scene.
27:58Fast man of the session thus far is Pedro De La Rosa of McLaren,
28:01as you watch Giancarlo Fisichella in the Renault.
28:05On Pablo Montoya, as McLaren is second.
28:07Ricardo Zantos, Toyota third.
28:09Then Kimi Raikkonen, this man, Fisichella.
28:11Fernando Alonso, his teammate.
28:13Rubens Barichello, Felipe Massa, Jenson Button,
28:15and Takuma Sato in the BARs
28:17round out the top ten.
28:19Then Mark Webber.
28:21Nick Heidfeld, his Williams teammate.
28:23Ralph Schumacher in the other Toyota.
28:25Michael Schumacher, the world champion in the Ferrari,
28:27is 14th, followed by David Coulthard,
28:29Jack Villeneuve, Yarno Trulli, Christian Kling,
28:32Patrick Friesacker, whom we've not seen at all in the Minardi,
28:35Naren Kardecayan in the Jordan,
28:37Scott Speed, now 21st,
28:40then Thiago Montero and Christian Albers.
28:43Christian Albers, who we're looking at right now
28:45as he comes down to the right and left,
28:48just in front of the bits.
28:49Christian Albers looking at the time difference
28:51between De La Rosa,
28:53over seven and a half seconds off the pace.
28:58Ah, they just cut it in half.
29:00He must have been less into it, he had a stroke.
29:02He said seven and a half, I better do something about that.
29:04I better push a bit, yeah?
29:06Imperiously cutting it in half.
29:07Yeah, that's a pretty good time.
29:09There's Kimi Räikkönen.
29:11A couple of race wins this year.
29:13And despite Alonso's success,
29:15Räikkönen, of late,
29:15has been the fastest man in Formula One,
29:17I would say, for the last four races or so.
29:20What are we doing here, Steve?
29:21Oh, he's taping over the crack.
29:23Exactly what they're doing.
29:24Exactly that, Bob.
29:25They're using that thin strips of helicopter tape,
29:28very sticky, heavy-duty plastic tape,
29:30just to seal over any of the joints in the bodywork,
29:33the shut lines to try and improve the aerodynamics.
29:36That's normally a pre-qualifying ritual, is it, huh?
29:39They do it.
29:40Well, certainly for the start of the race,
29:41you'll see them do it to the bodywork,
29:43on the top, the engine cover.
29:45But, I mean, these days,
29:46with the amount of hours and money
29:48that they're putting into the wind tunnel,
29:49remember, we've already looked at the front wings
29:51in previous races,
29:52where they refuse now to paint the leading edge of the wings.
29:55They want to leave it just in plain carbon
29:56because of the possibility of the sand pitting the paint
30:00and, therefore, just destroying just tiny amounts
30:04of aero efficiency over the front wing.
30:06Creating turbulence.
30:07Exactly.
30:07They're doing the same thing now
30:08to all the shut lines along the car
30:10through every session.
30:12Anything to find that last tenth of a second.
30:17Pedro De La Rosa,
30:18still the fast man of the session.
30:20Pedro, of course, is Spanish for Peter.
30:22De La Rosa is of the Rose,
30:24so our director, Mark Amster,
30:25terms Pedro the Pete Rose of Formula One.
30:35315 kilometers there,
30:36opposed to 300 over 320 for the Ferrari,
30:38so the Toyota uncharacteristically slow down that straight.
30:44Picks up to ninth from 17th,
30:46so that's a big jump for him in a 16.7.
30:49It was Michael Schumacher,
30:51the world champion,
30:51has kept quite a low profile
30:53since the Nürburgring two weeks ago.
30:55He immediately took off
30:56for one of his favorite places to go vacation,
30:59the United States of America,
31:01where he can basically walk down
31:03just about any street
31:04without being recognized.
31:07Look at that, 321 for the Ferrari down this straight
31:09before going into the pits.
31:11I'll have the privilege of doing
31:12a live public press conference
31:14with Michael Schumacher
31:15and a representative of the Bridgestone Tire Company
31:17on Thursday morning
31:18at the U.S. Grand Prix next week.
31:20I'll be interested to hear
31:21where Michael has been,
31:23if he'll tell us.
31:24We know he went to a rodeo in Oklahoma,
31:26of all places,
31:27because his wife, Corinna,
31:30is an equestrian fan.
31:32She may be at the Belmont on Saturday.
31:35We'll be back to Montreal in a moment.
31:41Welcome back.
31:42Friday practice,
31:43less than 15 minutes to go
31:45in the second of two one-hour practices.
31:48Hot and steamy summer day
31:51on the St. Lawrence River
31:52across from Montreal.
31:54I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs
31:55and Steve Matchett.
31:56Ambient air temperature,
31:57about 90 degrees.
31:58Track temperature,
31:59about 25 degrees hotter than that.
32:01And the humidity,
32:02right up around 60%.
32:05A sticky day
32:07in Quebec.
32:08Well, Jack Villeneuve
32:09just jumped from 17th to 9th
32:10with that lap.
32:12We've just seen him previously,
32:13the lap before,
32:14have a big lock-up.
32:14It's, of course,
32:15one of those things
32:15you've got to be very careful with
32:17on these weekends
32:17with such a limited tire supply.
32:19You might have to use
32:20some of today's tires
32:22on Sunday
32:23in an extreme case.
32:25So you don't have flat spot them
32:26any time.
32:27Of course,
32:27if you saw what a flat spot
32:28a tire would do
32:29to a potential race
32:30just two weeks ago
32:31in Europe.
32:31That's right.
32:32Can you reiken it?
32:33Seven laps to go,
32:34flat spotted it,
32:35started to come apart.
32:36He tried to get to the finish
32:37with Fernando Alonso
32:38right there on his gearbox.
32:41And on the last lap,
32:43when the Clarence suspension failed,
32:45and Alonso went on
32:46to inherit the victory.
32:48Just saw Mark Webber.
32:50There he is,
32:51an Australian,
32:52out at the first corner
32:54at the Nürburgring
32:55two weeks ago
32:56in a collision
32:56with Juan Pablo Montoya's McLaren.
32:59After qualifying second
33:01to his teammate
33:02Nick Heidfeld's
33:03first career pole.
33:04Heidfeld coming in
33:05off two straight
33:06Formula One podium.
33:08And not looking very quick
33:09this afternoon.
33:10They're currently lying
33:10in 13th and 14th.
33:12Webber just a,
33:13well,
33:14literally a tenth quicker
33:15than Nick Heidfeld.
33:18I was talking to Ross Braun
33:19a couple of days ago.
33:21He got onto a conversation
33:22about McLaren suspension
33:24and Kimi Räikkönen.
33:25And I said,
33:25you know,
33:26would you have called
33:27the driver in?
33:27Whose decision is it?
33:28The driver's decision?
33:29Team decision?
33:30What you have done, Ross,
33:30if that was your guy?
33:31And he said,
33:32it has to be
33:32the driver's decision.
33:34We can only inform him
33:35of what we can see
33:36on the telemetry,
33:36and we can say
33:37whether or not
33:37things are becoming dangerous
33:39with the amount of load
33:39we can see on the suspension.
33:40but we on the pit wall
33:43can never be in a position
33:44to judge
33:44is the car safe
33:45for the driver or not.
33:46It must be
33:47the driver's decision.
33:48Kimi Räikkönen
33:49made that decision
33:50to stay out
33:51and he nearly
33:52pulled it off.
33:52I have to say,
33:53he very,
33:54very nearly
33:55managed to get that
33:56caught at the end
33:56of the race for victory.
33:57Well,
33:57the circumstances,
33:59and there's been
33:59a lot of chat
34:00on the internet
34:00about should he have
34:01stopped or shouldn't
34:02he have stopped.
34:02If he had stopped,
34:04Kimi Räikkönen
34:04would almost certainly
34:05have retained
34:06a podium finish
34:07if not the victory.
34:09But because the guy
34:11behind him
34:11was Fernando Alonso,
34:12the points leader,
34:13had Fernando Alonso
34:14been out of the points
34:15or running sixth
34:16or something like that,
34:17then Räikkönen
34:18might have stopped,
34:19still finished ahead
34:20of the points leader
34:21and thereby have
34:22gained some ground
34:22in the world championship.
34:23But really,
34:24Räikkönen had
34:25no choice in my view.
34:26If he thought he could do it,
34:27he had to do it
34:28because he had to get
34:29that two points
34:30away from Alonso.
34:32In the end,
34:32it all went wrong.
34:33But virtually every driver
34:35that I've heard,
34:36except notably
34:37Rubens Botticello
34:38who said he would
34:39have stopped,
34:39virtually everyone
34:40else said no,
34:41that they would have
34:42done the same thing
34:43that Räikkönen
34:43and McLaren did.
34:44Yeah.
34:45It is a difficult decision.
34:47Of course,
34:48if you could have
34:48changed tires
34:49throughout the race
34:50during last year's
34:50regulations,
34:51that situation
34:52wouldn't have arisen
34:52because they would have
34:53simply pulled the car
34:54and changed the tires
34:55as soon as the flat spot
34:56occurred,
34:56they would have,
34:57if necessary,
34:58changed the refueling strategy
34:59to allow them
35:00to change the tire.
35:01There's the onboard shot
35:02of the wheelings
35:02I was trying to find
35:03earlier on.
35:03Look how big those
35:04front brake ducts are there.
35:06Big scoops coming out
35:07from inside of the,
35:09inside of the wheel rim.
35:11Get down to business,
35:12Fernando Alonso
35:13now up to third
35:13behind Pedro Leroroza
35:15and Juan Pablo Montoya.
35:19Can you remember
35:20last year,
35:21Williams very,
35:22very concerned
35:23about the,
35:23trying to protect
35:24the brakes
35:25as much as possible.
35:26Last year,
35:26they put some brake
35:27that's on the car
35:27for those that aren't
35:28familiar with this little story.
35:29They put them on,
35:30they worked terribly well
35:31in the wind tunnel,
35:32they worked great
35:33in testing
35:33and they certainly
35:34kept the brakes
35:35remarkably cool.
35:36The slight problem was
35:37they were over an inch
35:39illegal to the technical
35:40regulations
35:41and the team
35:41were immediately
35:42disqualified
35:43from the results
35:44of the race afterwards
35:44when Charlie Whiting
35:45examined the car
35:47in post-race
35:47scrutineering.
35:48Just a small problem.
35:50The Williams,
35:50of course,
35:50a bit quick before here.
35:51The Ralph Schumacher
35:52is on the pole here
35:53when he was driving
35:54Williams the last two years,
35:55last year,
35:552004 and 2003
35:58and one in 01.
35:59So,
36:00Williams chassis
36:01should be good around here
36:02but they're languishing
36:03a little bit today.
36:05But, of course,
36:05you never know
36:06what they're doing
36:06on Friday.
36:07I mean,
36:07they could be
36:07just doing anything.
36:08Interesting situation
36:09around Williams
36:10these days.
36:11If, in fact,
36:11BMW goes away,
36:13Heidfeld,
36:13the German,
36:14is the preferred driver
36:15of the BMW organization.
36:19Jensen Button,
36:20of course,
36:20is bound legally
36:21to become
36:22a Williams driver
36:23if the BA or Honda
36:24does not help him
36:25earn 70% or so
36:27of the championship
36:28leader's point total
36:29by mid-season.
36:30So,
36:30this could all be
36:31very interesting.
36:32That's going to be
36:32a hard road.
36:33Oh, my goodness.
36:34Because he's only got
36:35zero points so far
36:36going into this race.
36:38So,
36:39there could be
36:39a huge driver shuffling
36:41coming up
36:42well before
36:42this season ends.
36:45Oh,
36:45there's a lot of smoke
36:46coming across
36:46our picture there.
36:47What was that
36:47caused by?
36:48The dust.
36:52Somebody just going
36:53out.
36:54I think it's one
36:54of the Ferraris
36:55in front of Heidfeld.
36:59You from overhead
37:00down in the
37:03hairpin area
37:05known as
37:05Le Pinier
37:07or the pit hairpin.
37:09That's where
37:09the old pits
37:10used to be
37:10and just outside
37:11that corner now
37:12is the support paddock.
37:14which this
37:15weekend includes
37:16the Star
37:17Mazda Series.
37:20The Infinity
37:21Pro Series
37:21from the IRL
37:22is also on hand
37:23this weekend.
37:26As well as
37:27we're under the
37:27formula of
37:28Toyota Atlantic
37:29Championship.
37:32Rudy Reikman
37:33continues on
37:34his way
37:35as his situation
37:35of the World
37:36Championship
37:36grows increasingly
37:38desperate
37:38with each race.
37:40He must finish
37:40ahead of
37:41Fernando Alonso
37:42this weekend.
37:45Speed Channel's
37:46coverage of the
37:47FIA Formula One
37:48World Championship
37:49is brought to you
37:50by New Mobile
37:51One Extended
37:52Performance.
37:52The oil that's
37:53changing oil.
37:57Welcome back.
37:58Taking you right
37:59to the checkered
37:59flag and beyond
38:00in this second
38:01Friday practice
38:02for the Canadian
38:02Grand Prix
38:03here on Speed
38:04Channel.
38:05Fernando Alonso
38:06flashes across
38:06start finish
38:07116.685.
38:10He has a better
38:11115.376
38:13which has him
38:14second in the
38:15session to
38:16McLaren's
38:16Friday driver
38:17Pedro De La Rosa.
38:19Flavio
38:20Torre looks on.
38:21No wonder he's
38:21smiling because
38:22he just was
38:23flopped with a
38:23speed there
38:24of 331 clicks
38:25an hour
38:26which is nearly
38:26nearly 206
38:28miles an hour
38:28going into that
38:29complex before
38:30the pit.
38:31Here's our
38:32current situation
38:32on the timesheets
38:33as Michael
38:34Schumacher
38:34comes through
38:35the chicane.
38:37That concrete
38:38unforgiving wall
38:39to his right
38:40is...
38:41He will attest
38:42as will Jack
38:42Lune ever
38:43attest.
38:43And any number
38:44of other drivers
38:45who have hit it
38:45it's painted
38:46with a sign
38:47that says
38:47Bienvenue
38:48en Montreal.
38:49Welcome to
38:50Montreal.
38:50Splap.
38:51Yeah.
38:52I was just
38:53looking at my
38:53circuit map
38:54and wondering
38:54why the
38:54hairpin was
38:55called the
38:55Dunlop Curve
38:56and then realised
38:56I've still got
38:57the Nürburgring
38:58circuit map
38:58out in front of you.
38:59I'll tell you
38:59what I'll pull
39:00that away.
39:00Round 8.
39:01Round 8.
39:02Please.
39:02Try that.
39:03Move ahead.
39:04It is...
39:05Oh man.
39:06That's what happens
39:07when it's David
39:07Hobbs' birthday
39:08Bobby.
39:09Go out celebrating
39:10with Hobbs
39:10and it all goes
39:13completely wrong.
39:14David Hobbs
39:15continues to age
39:16like a fine wine.
39:17if there's any
39:19left.
39:21Well Jackie Stewart
39:22will be the same
39:23age as me
39:23tomorrow on
39:24June 11th.
39:25Did you know?
39:27So Jackie Stewart
39:28and David Hobbs
39:30nearly shared there.
39:34Little lock up there
39:35for Michael Schumacher
39:36going to happen.
39:37The Renault tracking
39:38him down.
39:40Again on Friday
39:40you don't know
39:41what these guys
39:41are up to
39:42but on the other
39:42hand I'm sure
39:43the Ferraris
39:43would like to be
39:44near the top
39:45of the timesheet
39:45even just to show
39:46they could do it.
39:47Oh even where
39:47they are now.
39:48Michael Schumacher
39:49is down in
39:5016th position
39:51two and a half
39:52seconds
39:52over two and a
39:53half seconds
39:53off the pace
39:54of De La Rosa.
39:56Not good.
39:58Giancarlo Fisichella
39:58and the blue
39:59and yellow Renault
40:00keeping case
40:00with the Ferrari.
40:02John Talk
40:02in the foreground
40:03with Ross Braun
40:04looking on.
40:05Been an interesting
40:05year for those
40:06gentlemen.
40:06Not quite what
40:07they had planned
40:08in the off season.
40:09I don't think so.
40:11Not really.
40:13And I just still
40:14it still actually
40:15fascinates me
40:16that it could have
40:17such a drop off
40:18in performance.
40:19I mean a bit
40:19is one thing.
40:20You know lose
40:21the odd race
40:22to Renault
40:22and McLaren
40:23is one thing
40:23but just to
40:24be as bad
40:25as they are
40:26seems almost
40:27inconceivable.
40:29E2 for
40:29Ricardo Zonta
40:30up from fourth
40:31with the best
40:32middle sector
40:33of the day.
40:34Sorry we can't
40:35bring you any more.
40:36Oh Zonta's
40:37cracked out some laps
40:38today.
40:38He's done 32 laps
40:39in this session
40:40and he did 27
40:42this morning
40:43so he's done
40:44nearly a race distance.
40:45We'd like to bring
40:46you more footage
40:46of Scott Speed
40:47the young American
40:48in action
40:48but he has parked
40:49the Red Bull
40:50Cosworth
40:51for the weekend.
40:52I've got half
40:53a turn forwards
40:54on brakes
40:54if you can.
40:55Half a turn forwards
40:57on brakes
40:57if you can.
40:59There's Alan Perman
41:00Fisichelis
41:01race engineer.
41:02Self-explanatory.
41:04Moving the brake
41:05bias forward.
41:06You're not allowed
41:06to change the brake
41:07pressures side to side.
41:08That is banned
41:09to the technical
41:10regulations.
41:10You are allowed
41:11to adjust it
41:12front to rear.
41:13You cannot do that
41:15with any electronics.
41:16The only means
41:17available to the
41:18driver is
41:18through a cable
41:19which is occasionally
41:21why you see
41:21the drivers
41:21take their hands
41:22off the steering
41:23wheel
41:23and push it
41:24forward behind
41:25the steering
41:26wheel
41:26for a little
41:27rotary switch there
41:28but it's just
41:28a very basic
41:29it's just like
41:30a two-core cable
41:32really
41:32like you'd find
41:33on an old
41:34speedo drive
41:35really
41:35very basic
41:37the regulations
41:38the regulations
41:38weren't allowed
41:38to do anything
41:39really with the
41:39brakes
41:40they're extremely
41:41straight
41:42yeah
41:42Schumacher
41:43lock it up
41:43big time
41:44trying to hold
41:44off Fisichelis
41:45can you imagine
41:46you see the day
41:47when Fisichelis
41:48would be
41:48bought
41:49by
41:49Michael Schumacher
41:51the champion
41:53Schumacher
41:53disappeared off
41:54there to the
41:54right of our
41:55picture
41:55we didn't
41:55need to see
41:56what happened
41:56to him
41:56he's getting
41:56awfully close
41:57to the edge
41:57of the road
41:58I mean the
41:59edge of the
41:59green stuff
42:01and he has
42:01no sign of him
42:03still got wheels
42:05like him
42:05Michael Schumacher
42:06has been questioned
42:07endlessly about
42:08Ferrari's plight
42:09in 2005
42:10and he says
42:10hey
42:10when I came to
42:11Ferrari
42:12we lost an
42:12awful lot
42:13but
42:13having said
42:15that
42:15Michael is on
42:16his longest
42:17winless drought
42:19since very early
42:20in his career
42:21with the Benetton
42:21team
42:22and has gotten
42:22that bad
42:23in Ferrari
42:23longest
42:24winless
42:25since the time
42:26between his
42:26first and second
42:27wins in
42:2792 and 93
42:29so
42:29he is really
42:30looking
42:31I mean he
42:31made Ferrari
42:32look better
42:32than this
42:32the year
42:33he went to
42:33join him
42:33in 1996
42:35less than
42:35two minutes
42:35to go
42:36in the session
42:36now
42:36watching
42:37Fisichella
42:38I want to
42:38get back
42:38to something
42:39you just said
42:39Steve
42:39about the
42:40brakes
42:40Ferrari
42:41issued
42:41a press
42:42release
42:42earlier
42:43this week
42:43talking about
42:44braking
42:44at Montreal
42:45here's a
42:45replay
42:46of Michael
42:46going off
42:47and Fisichella
42:47going by
42:49Ferrari
42:49says
42:50they very
42:50carefully
42:51modulate
42:52the braking
42:52so that
42:53it works
42:54in concert
42:55with the
42:56engine braking
42:57to get
42:57the car
42:58to slow
42:58the way
42:59they want
42:59it to
42:59which is
43:00something
43:00I've really
43:01never heard
43:01of before
43:02the engine
43:03braking
43:03being that
43:04big of a
43:05factor
43:06around a
43:07track like
43:07this
43:07yeah
43:08they do
43:08use it
43:09a lot
43:09and you
43:10bring up
43:10another
43:10very good
43:11point
43:11the top
43:12driver
43:12certainly
43:13Michael
43:13Schumacher
43:15I've seen
43:16him do
43:16this as well
43:17looking at
43:17this telemetry
43:18he will
43:18modulate
43:19the brake
43:19pedal
43:19by pushing
43:20it
43:20very fast
43:21on and
43:22off
43:22almost like
43:23a very
43:23limited
43:23form of
43:24ABS
43:24to try
43:25and find
43:25that
43:25perfect
43:26braking
43:26point
43:27which
43:27is of
43:28course
43:28just
43:28what
43:28a very
43:29sophisticated
43:29ABS
43:30system
43:30will do
43:31will
43:31electronically
43:32apply the
43:33pressure to
43:33the
43:33caliper
43:33and as
43:34soon as
43:34the wheel
43:34starts to
43:35slow
43:35to lose
43:36grip
43:36with a
43:37tarmac
43:37it'll let
43:37the pressure
43:38off
43:38see that
43:39there
43:39Fisher
43:39did that
43:40little
43:40weave
43:41after he
43:41went past
43:42Albers
43:42there
43:42because
43:43he
43:43wants
43:43to
43:43clean
43:44his
43:44tires
43:44up
43:44because
43:44he
43:45wants
43:45to
43:45try
43:45and
43:45get
43:45to
43:45start
43:46finish
43:46line
43:46to
43:47try
43:47and turn
43:47in one
43:48good
43:48lap
43:48he's been
43:48bought
43:49lap
43:49after
43:49lap
43:49needs to
43:50get a
43:50good
43:50time
43:51in
43:51here
43:51he
43:51was
43:51cleaning
43:52his
43:52tires

44:04I'd like
44:05to quote
44:05from that
44:06press release
44:06that Ferrari
44:07release
44:08one of the
44:09engineers
44:09talking about
44:10modulating
44:10the engine
44:11braking
44:11to prevent
44:12lockup
44:12if the
44:13front or
44:13the rear
44:14is locking
44:14up
44:14we can
44:14reduce
44:15or increase
44:15the engine
44:16braking
44:16if the car
44:17is locking
44:17the fronts
44:18we need
44:18more engine
44:19braking
44:19to reduce
44:20the amount
44:20of normal
44:20braking
44:21at the
44:21front
44:21something
44:22the driver
44:22can adjust
44:23from the
44:23cockpit
44:24the same
44:24way as
44:25traction
44:25control
44:25to suit
44:26individual
44:27corners
44:27on the
44:28racetrack
44:29fairly
44:31complex
44:31if you think
44:32about it
44:32yeah
44:33at 205
44:34miles an
44:35hour
44:35if you can
44:35just do
44:36that
44:36well of course
44:37you know
44:37the thing
44:38about these
44:38Formula 1
44:39engines
44:39they have
44:40such a
44:40light
44:40reciprocating
44:41parts
44:41they have
44:42tremendously
44:42high
44:42compression
44:43ratios
44:43and virtually
44:44no flywheel
44:45as we know
44:45it
44:45I mean
44:46you know
44:46they're revving
44:47them at
44:476000 RPM
44:48and they switch
44:49them off
44:49I mean
44:49they just
44:50stop
44:51and of course
44:51if you lift
44:52off
44:52if you just
44:53lift off
44:54the gas pedal
44:55as Gartha Cain
44:55does another
44:56loop
44:57ending with a
44:57flourish
44:58if you just
44:58lift off the
44:59throttle pedal
44:59on one of these
45:00Formula 1 cars
45:00they develop
45:01over 1G of
45:02brake force
45:03just on
45:04engine brake
45:04just lifting
45:05pretty awesome
45:06just lifting
45:06so obviously
45:08a lift
45:08into a
45:08corner
45:09is very
45:09different
45:10to what

45:4215 seconds
45:43before the thing

45:44be very close
45:46to ignition
45:47great reflexes
45:48from
45:49Albers
45:49out of the way
