00:00Biggest injury story in the National Football League, without a doubt, is the one to Jalen Hurts, unfortunately suffering from
00:06blood clots.
00:07And Dr. Chow, this is sort of scary here because naturally, you know, through the years we've heard athletes having
00:14blood clots.
00:15And generally speaking, it becomes more of a protect your life situation.
00:18We saw it with Victor Wembayama last year of the San Antonio Spurs.
00:23We've seen it previously from players in the NBA.
00:25Chris Bosh also comes to mind, ended his career in the NBA as well.
00:29So, Dr. Chow, what do you make of this?
00:32And certainly I know every individual has different levels of this, too, from what I'm reading and different blood clots.
00:37And maybe you could sort it out for us here and tell us whether or not you think he'll play
00:41again, let's say, this season.
00:44Well, you know, look, the whole point of this is to not have the blood clot propagate and become a
00:51pulmonary embolism.
00:53And that's when, you know, it can be fatal.
00:57Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often.
00:59Fortunately, with a good treatment, he's going to be fine.
01:04But the problem is that when you're on blood thinners, you really shouldn't play the collision sport of football.
01:11For example, the big fear is if you have a head injury and a brain bleed and tends to bleed
01:17more, that would be catastrophic.
01:19So even if there is a 1% or 0.1% chance of that, you never want to take
01:26that risk.
01:27This is why even though the Eagles did a great job of explaining what it was, it was a superficial
01:33blood clot.
01:34And once that occurred and they said there was movement, wasn't sure what movement meant, propagation, deep vein, whatever it
01:43was.
01:43At that point at Sports Injury Central, we were saying that Jalen Hurts was more likely out for the season
01:51than going to play in the following week.
01:53And now he's on injured reserve, so obviously he's not playing the following week.
01:59Now it's a matter of can he come back at all.
02:03It's not impossible to come back.
02:04It depends on what type of blood clot and what type of blood thinners he needs to be on.
02:09But of course, better safe than sorry in all of this and his health comes first.
02:15And I think that's what the Eagles are doing.
02:17But at this point, it's at least four weeks, but it starts to be season-threatening for sure.
