00:08Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 TV and film adaptations of video
00:15games that you may not have known exist. Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long,
00:27so be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays, and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33Tekken!
00:43Most fighting game fans may be more familiar with Tekken The Motion Picture from 1998,
00:48the 2011 CGI movie Tekken Blood Vengeance, or recently, the Netflix anime series Tekken Bloodline.
00:56But did you know about the 2011 live-action adaptation?
01:06Tekken featured a few noteworthy actors like Kelly Overton, Ian Anthony Dale, and Kari Hiroyuki Tagawa,
01:13and the fight choreography was pretty solid. Unfortunately, the story deviated pretty heavily
01:19from the source material, and what we wound up with was something half-baked.
01:24Then-series producer Katsuhiro Harada was a pretty big hater of the movie, too,
01:29calling it, quote, terrible, and revealing that Bandai Namco was unable to supervise the production
01:35due to contractual agreements.
01:37Citizens of Tekken and the world, I give you Jin Kazama, the winner of Iron Fist!
01:46Forbidden Siren
01:53For the most part, the Siren games have been largely forgotten by Sony and the majority
01:58of the gaming community, which is a shame since the series was compelling in its writing and
02:03visuals. A lot of us were dying for the movie adaptation to make its way to the West, and
02:07it never did. Of course, the internet has made it a little easier to watch it these days,
02:12and turns out, the movie is one of those 50-50 risks where you'll come out liking it or hating
02:18it.
02:23Some appreciate the low budget and the slow burn, while others have scrutinized it for
02:28those same aspects. But if you enjoyed the games, it's definitely worth a view.
02:35Siren!
02:38Heavenly Sword
02:40Within minutes, in fact, all carried the same information. They, too, came seeking reward.
02:47They all dead now!
02:51Heavenly Sword found itself in a weird situation after the game launched in 2007. Ninja Theory wanted
02:57to do a sequel, but Sony did not on account of the game's poor sales. And yet, Sony made the
03:03bizarre
03:04decision to allow an animated movie adaptation to happen seven years later.
03:17Yes, Heavenly Sword was released in 2014, and it featured Anna Torv as the voice of Nariko once again.
03:25Sadly, the movie did not do the game justice. The animation was cheaply made, while substantial
03:31changes were made to the story that significantly flattened any meaningful character development
03:36we witnessed in the game.
03:45The King of Fighters
03:47Welcome to Regal's version of the tournament. In this arena, I make all the rules.
03:52You can't change the rules.
03:53I can change the rules, I can change the setting, I can do whatever I want.
03:57If you're surprised we have never gotten a properly budgeted live-action film adaptation of The King of Fighters,
04:03well, it's likely because the first attempt was a dumpster fire. Tell me, how do you make a movie
04:08based on a fighting game without having decent fight choreography?
04:19Not only is every bit of action a snoozefest, but almost none of the characters are properly adapted here.
04:26Like, why in the hell is Terry Bogard a CIA agent, and then you got a white guy to play
04:33Kiyo, a Japanese character?
04:35Nothing about this movie makes a lick of sense in production, nor story.
04:39Honestly, you're better off watching the anime The King of Fighters another day. It's way, way better.
04:45Not that that should be surprising.
04:46I would help!
04:56Elf Bowling the Movie
04:59Look! They're cracking open like boiled sea serpent eggs! Look out!
05:05Surely some of you out there have to remember the 1998 Windows PC game, Elf Bowling, yeah?
05:12You know, the game where Santa uses his little elves as living bowling pins for his sick pleasure?
05:18Yeah, it got an animated film adaptation back in 2006, roughly a year after the original two games
05:26were released for Nintendo DS.
05:34And to no one's surprise, it is one of the worst movies based on a video game ever made.
05:40There is simply nothing redeemable here. Not in the animation, not in the music, not in the writing,
05:46not even in the voice acting. Save yourself, because this crap is unwatchable.
05:51You did it!
05:53All right!
05:54Ooh!
05:55Ha ha!
05:56Man, we could use that in Detroit!
05:58Wing Commander!
06:00Wait for them to launch a torpedo, they'll lower their shield just before.
06:05I'm hit!
06:06Almost there, Stanley, my friend. Almost.
06:11Whereas some players were busy playing Microsoft Flight Simulator or Pilotwings,
06:16others were captivated by the stellar sci-fi flight sim, Wing Commander.
06:21The Electronic Arts series gave players the opportunity to pilot their own spaceship
06:25and explore the galaxy while fighting enemy forces.
06:28Shockingly, the franchise got its own movie adaptation in 1999, starring Freddie Prinze Jr.
06:34and Matthew Lillard, and nobody liked it.
06:40For many, there were other movies in the late 90s that featured better visual effects,
06:44and there are such an abundance of cliches in this movie that it makes it a slog to sit through.
06:50BNR in five seconds, entry capture doesn't compute.
06:57I made it!
06:59She held it together, I love this baby!
07:01F-Zero, GP Legend.
07:15Many folks will remember Kirby Right Back At Ya from the 4Kids block, but real Nintendo fans
07:21will never forget F-Zero, GP Legend.
07:24Spanning a whopping 51 episodes, this anime dives into the cool and mysterious story of Captain Falcon,
07:33along with some of his fellow competitors.
07:35And it is actually a pretty great anime!
07:46It's almost like watching another iteration of Speed Racer,
07:50with the sometimes campy humor and the genuinely intense racing action.
07:53Really, if there is one obscure anime adaptation of a video game that you need to check out,
07:59it's F-Zero, GP Legend.
08:01You will not regret it.
08:14Ace Attorney!
08:25Speaking of video game entertainment with campy humor,
08:29there has been a live-action film adaptation of the first Ace Attorney video game.
08:34And honestly, it may be the best adaptation of Ace Attorney we have seen yet.
08:41Not only does it perfectly translate the original game to the big screen,
08:45the cast does an excellent job at portraying every character, while retaining the game's humor and charm.
08:52Even some of the more absurd aspects, like characters freezing up when caught in a lie,
08:56feel shockingly natural within the story, albeit hilarious to see coming from real actors.
09:06Yakuza Like a Dragon
09:12Long before we got Amazon's middling television series known as Like a Dragon Yakuza,
09:18we got this film based on the very first Yakuza game.
09:21And while it does some things better than the show, it is still overall a mixed bag.
09:34It nails the humor and is overall a pretty fun movie to watch,
09:38but the pacing is brought to a screeching halt due to some of the subplots ham-fisted throughout.
09:43And for those who are brand spanking new to Like a Dragon,
09:46you will likely have no idea what's going on because of where the movie begins in comparison to the game.
09:52Yeah, it's a confusing mess, but it's a fun confusing mess.
09:55So, if you turn your brain off, you're gonna enjoy it.
10:08If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.
10:13Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
10:16Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the dark side of fame
10:20from the writer of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
10:23Boom. I can make an apology video.
10:26Oh, you so would.
10:27Click on the link in the description to check out the game and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
10:33And finally, Animal Crossing.
10:47With all of the hullabaloo between the recent Mario movies and the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie,
10:52you would wonder why Nintendo hasn't done an Animal Crossing movie yet.
10:56But funny enough, they did do one, and it was released way, way back when the series was in its
11:01younger years.
11:06The movie follows a young girl as she moves into a small town.
11:10While it features just about all of the old Animal Crossing buddies you know and love,
11:14the best part about the movie is just how heartwarming and cozy it all is
11:19with its messages of friendship and connecting with others.
11:21It is just like experiencing the old games all over again.
11:36Have you seen any of these adaptations yourself?
