00:00I'm going to leave you now as we cross to Sydney
00:02where the Prime Minister is about to speak.
00:04Let's listen in.
00:05Serious incident that has occurred in Victoria.
00:09This afternoon, Helen Haynes, the member for Indy,
00:12was attacked outside her electorate office in Wangaratta.
00:17All of our thoughts are with Helen,
00:19her family, her friends, her team and her community
00:23at this extremely difficult time.
00:27We are praying for her full recovery.
00:31I want to thank the first responders for their extraordinary work.
00:36There is a major police investigation underway
00:39and I can confirm that a suspect is in custody.
00:44The Australian Federal Police, Victorian Police and Asia
00:48are working together on this.
00:50The joint counter-terrorism team has been activated
00:54but the motive is not known.
00:56It is too early in this investigation for me
01:00to provide you with details of what the motivation is behind this attack.
01:06My thoughts are also with those there who were there in Wangaratta today
01:11and Helen's community more broadly.
01:15Helen Haynes is incredibly hard-working.
01:18She is fiercely intelligent
01:20but most importantly, she's just a thoroughly decent human being,
01:26full of integrity and respected right across the Parliament
01:31and from everyone who comes into contact with her.
01:35She is a well-loved member of her community
01:39and this will come as an incredible shock to that community.
01:45Our thoughts remain with Helen Haynes at this very difficult time.
01:52We have made a range of comments that I have made.
01:59Go look up the interviews in which I've done
02:03and call for the temperature to be turned down
02:06when it comes to political discourse.
02:10It is too early, though, to speculate on motivation
02:13and we won't be doing so.
02:14We'll allow the authorities to do their work.
02:17So what security measures, if any,
02:20she was reported ahead of this attack by Parliament?
02:22Look, we organise security arrangements
02:27based upon the threat levels which are there.
02:32But as Minister Burke has said,
02:35and as you would be aware,
02:39and anyone who looks at comments made
02:45and directed towards members of Parliament
02:48and high office holders,
02:49there is increased heightened risk has occurred.
02:55Our thoughts are just very much with Helen,
02:59her family, her community at this time.
03:02Thanks very much.
