00:00Jeff Halfley, the Dolphins will be back at it, taking on the Jets this week.
00:06And this is giving some stuff on the bye week.
00:11Injury-wise, the big news, I'd say, out of practice is Caleb Douglas is looking like he's going to make
00:17his return this week,
00:17which is good news.
00:18The rookie receiver out of Texas Tech obviously dazzled in the preseason and then had the ankle injury.
00:25So it seems like they're going to get him back, which is great.
00:31He went on some of the things that they scouted on, and this is what he had to say on
00:37that.
00:39You know, there's things that you look back on because you have some extra time.
00:43It's for defense, for example.
00:46There's things that we haven't run that we ran in training camp that we just haven't carried in the game
00:50plans, right?
00:50So you can go and pull back some stuff.
00:53Are we ready to add or do we want to throw out some stuff and bring some of the stuff
00:56that we did throughout training camp?
00:58Because you can't carry everything into a game.
01:00I mean, there's just you get limited calls, whether you get 12 third down calls and how many first and
01:0510 calls and second one to six and second seven plus.
01:08So, you know, it was a good opportunity to go back and say, hey, you know what?
01:13We really like this in training camp, but didn't carry it into the first couple weeks for whatever reason it
01:18was.
01:18And, you know, let's pull this out and try that and let's add this or let's take away that.
01:23But really looking back through, we kind of done it every week.
01:27So it's such a small sample size.
01:29There's there's it's not huge, but a really good time to evaluate and catch your breath.
01:34And sometimes when you just, you know, you get to step back, you can see some things clearly.
01:39So we're excited to get back to work.
01:41I know Bobby did the same thing.
01:42I sat with him for a while with the offense was tapes on special teams.
01:46And and I think it's all kind of the same thing.
01:49It's what are we going to add?
01:50What are we going to take away?
01:51There's been minor tweaks that we've made throughout and we'll continue to do that.
01:56But it was it was it was good to reflect.
01:58It really was.
01:59And I think for the players to get away, catch their breath and get a chance to come back excited
02:04and get going again.
02:05Well, hopefully he scouted and told special teams guy, hey, less nicknames, more fix than the special teams.
02:13Yeah, I never like been on a team with bad special teams.
02:20One, because we had a really good coach in all places that I was.
02:27And second of all, the head coach emphasized it.
02:32Right.
02:32Right. Bill Belichick was big on playing starters.
02:36Right.
02:37For special teams.
02:38So, you know, with Denny, if he needed you, you had to go.
02:43And case in point, special teams meetings for both of those coaches, everybody was in the meeting room.
02:51So the whole team, it was basically a team meeting for special teams.
02:56Except for the starting quarterbacks.
02:58That's it.
02:59Yeah, and I think if it was just the kickoff return thing, like, look, if you're watching around the league,
03:02the kickoff dynamic kickoff has definitely worked because, I mean, it's happening every week where a guy gets a crazy
03:07return.
03:08And, you know, two plays later, you're in field goal range, basically, with most kickers.
03:12Not not not Riley Patterson.
03:14He's still a normie.
03:15But, you know, we need to get one of them super kickers.
03:17Will we get those?
03:19Everybody else got kickers.
03:20And by the way, how come Riley Patterson hasn't learned how to cheat?
03:23You know, Nick Folk, he's got a pot belly.
03:26He's been kicking for 20 years.
03:27He can kick 60 yarders now.
03:29What's going on?
03:31I need Riley Patterson to get his stuff together with the super kicks.
03:36Yeah.
03:36I don't know.
03:39You all right, man?
03:40I'm all right.
03:41You seem a little down on these last couple of hours.
03:44You've been distracted.
03:44I'm good.
03:45I'm just annoyed.
03:47You've been fired up like a bat out of hell.
03:49Yeah, I'm annoyed.
03:50What's happened?
03:51Like, you've been very distracted.
03:53I'm not distracted.
03:54I would disagree.
03:56I'm not distracted.
03:57I don't react to each segment.
03:58I would disagree.
03:59I just want to make sure you know.
04:00I would say when it – it's hard for this team because you always have five or six guys
04:11that do number special teams.
04:14The Dolphins don't have that.
04:16Right?
04:18All the guys that they have on special teams are playing significant.
04:21Yeah, I would guess so.
04:22But, I mean, like, they've also had – even the veteran punter has screwed up.
04:26Malik Willis is – I mean, Washington has dropped punts.
04:29Like, they've effed up everywhere.
04:31No, I know.
04:32Everywhere.
04:32Now, this is journalism.
04:33Let's give a shout-out to Chris Perkins.
04:35This is journalism.
04:36Okay, this is the stuff I want to know.
04:37All right, this is why Perk's the best.
04:38The best.
04:40Okay?
04:41Chris Perkins asked him if he hit up Dolphins consultant Troy Aikman in the bye week.
04:47I know Troy Aikman has served as an advisor.
04:50Was he advised that he – was he consulted for bye week, I guess, input?
04:55No, I did not talk to Troy this past week.
04:58And then –
04:58Big mistake.
05:00Should have.
05:01And discuss what?
05:03Something.
05:04Troy Aikman.
05:04Get Troy Aikman's thoughts on things.
05:06I would say that –
05:08What's the point of having a consultant if you're not a consultant?
05:10For this team, because you started off so slow, because you hadn't played together,
05:20I think the thing that's going to help this team is reps.
05:24It's funny because the solution to all of their problems is repetition.
05:31Game-type repetition.
05:33For the coaching staff, for the players, for everything.
05:37Like, at what point are you going to look at what, you know, the sheet says
05:45and then look up at your team and say, I know damn well we can't do that.
05:49Kick it.
05:50Right?
05:51Like, those are the fields that a coach has to get, what his players can and can't do.
05:57The players have to get acclimated with all the different things they're going to see.
06:01And the thing about young teams, you can always get them in this way.
06:08They don't know what's real versus what's fake.
06:11It takes repetition of seeing guys line up, being able to look in the secondary,
06:16and just by looking in the secondary knowing who's coming and who's not.
06:20You guys talking about the Troy Aikman thing at all last week with his breaking up with Joe Buck?
06:24They hate each other now.
06:27They apparently have been having arguments off the air because Joe Buck had a big fat new deal
06:31and apparently ESPN doesn't want Troy Aikman back.
06:34I'll tell you why, because they're going to put that McAfee in the booth 100%.
06:37Pat McAfee will be the voice of Monday Night Football.
06:40Who wants that?
06:41Nobody.
06:42Nobody.
06:42Nobody does.
06:43But you know what?
06:44Troy Aikman, don't even waste your time going and broadcasting elsewhere, dude.
06:47Just come here.
06:48Come save the Dolphins, dude.
06:49These guys, they need your guidance very clearly.
06:51And I hope that those two don't realize, you know, don't forget where you came from,
06:55which is from Troy Aikman.
06:57So if we're going to do anything, it should be under the two of these.
07:00We're going to decide what quarterback we want?
07:02Troy Aikman.
07:03These guys need to make a decision.
07:05Talk to Troy Aikman first.
07:07I don't like the fact that Jeff Halfley's just out here dismissing Troy Aikman.
07:10Don't forget where you came from, all right?
07:12And where you came from was Troy Aikman's decision.
07:15Oh, my goodness.
07:16It is.
07:17It's true.
07:17You are.
07:19I hope this Florio's happy with himself, too.
07:21You, Mike Florio, you know, you just couldn't stop sticking your beak in Troy Aikman's business.
07:25How's he going to broadcast?
07:27How's he going to do this?
07:27And look at you.
07:28You broke up a tandem.
07:29I liked that tandem.
07:30I liked Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
07:32And he had to go in there, stick in his beak in Troy Aikman's business.
07:35Troy Aikman gets a side hustle.
07:37And all of a sudden, Mike Florio's so concerned about a Monday Night Football game that wasn't
07:40going to happen this year.
07:41And I just feel bad for Troy Aikman.
07:43So Troy Aikman should be coming down here.
07:44He's the one who put this regime together.
07:46Let him come down here.
07:47Consult these guys.
07:49Really?
07:50Yeah.
07:50Now, let me ask you a question.
07:52And this is just a common sense question.
07:56You just got the job of GM and coach.
07:59Yep.
08:00J.S.
08:01Halfley.
08:02Right?
08:04If you need to do too much consulting, your ass probably shouldn't have that job.
08:10They hired you based on your abilities.
08:13So you think these guys want to show what they can do?
08:17I mean, they can show what they can do all they want.
08:19But I'd also like Troy Aikman to be there.
08:22And just out of curiosity, do you think Troy Aikman would be better at some of the decisions
08:30these guys have to make?
08:33He might be.
08:35No, but.
08:37All right.
08:38Look, I don't have nothing against Troy Aikman.
08:43But I'm going to trust the people that are around this every day.
08:47The guys that Troy Aikman picked?
08:49It doesn't.
08:53So if Troy Aikman had a say in who was hired, right, that doesn't mean he could do their job.
09:01It doesn't mean that it can't do their job.
09:03Oh, my goodness.
09:04You have to stop this.
09:05What are you talking about?
09:06This is just lunacy.
09:09How is it lunacy?
09:12You know, he's going to sit here and he's like, ah.
09:14Let me ask you a question.
09:16Sure.
09:17Len, when Len first got to the station, I was just doing Mondays and Fridays.
09:25In fact, I was doing it with Jax, believe it or not.
09:28I already know the story.
09:29Okay.
09:31So because Len brought me in, right, you're saying that he could do this job?
09:40Len's not a Hall of Fame quarterback.
09:42Like, what kind of a?
09:42But being a Hall of Fame any, wait.
09:45Being a Hall of Fame quarterback doesn't make you a good GM or coach.
09:53It doesn't not make you a good GM or coach.
09:55In most cases.
09:56John Mitchell's been doing a pretty good job as a cornerback or safety.
09:59John Mitchell's been doing a pretty good job.
10:00He's a Hall of Famer.
10:01Yeah.
10:02John Elway led to a Super Bowl.
10:04It's not a guarantee that that guy's better.
10:07It's not a guarantee.
10:07Nothing in life is a guarantee.
10:08Oh, my God.
10:09Who said it was a guarantee?
10:10So your replies to all of this is that he's not good at it.
10:16Well, I mean, your response is you don't know that he's going to be good.
10:18So who's – I mean, like you're doing the same thing.
10:20I would say at this point, at this point, Halfley and J.S. are more qualified for what they're doing
10:29than Troy Aikman is.
10:31How so?
10:33Because they've been doing it for longer.
10:35They've been – you know, he's been a defensive coordinator for longer.
10:39He's been a coach for longer.
10:41He's been in front offices for longer.
10:43I'm not saying that's – huh?
10:44What about Noah Malik-Willis, quarterback evaluation?
10:48Yeah.
10:51Now, that standpoint, I would say, hey, Troy, what can you – is there something you think we could work
10:58on here?
11:00Right.
11:00Sounds like we're on the same page.
11:02No, we're not.
11:03Sounds like we're on the same page.
11:04It sounds like it came around.
11:05This is conversations just like –
11:08Yes.
11:09How is it going nowhere?
11:11Nowhere.
11:13I don't understand.
11:13Asking a quarterback what he thinks about quarterback play is different than a GM and a head coach calling and
11:20asking him advice for the whole team.
11:22You don't think – I mean, you don't think that's a good idea to have him around and getting some
11:25input on Malik-Willis?
11:26Maybe he talks to Malik-Willis.
11:28That's one player, a position he played.
11:30Good.
11:31I'll give you that.
11:32You're talking about – they should be talking to him about everything.
11:35Well, I mean, they can talk to him about everything.
11:37Why?
11:38They're more qualified.
11:39What's the number one thing, though, that we need to get on track?
11:41You would agree with Malik-Willis.
11:44This is – you're right, doctor upstairs, downstairs.
11:50You're right.
11:53I fall for the dumbest of conversations.
11:55It's not like – it's not falling for it.
11:56It is.
11:57You want to just disagree with someone.
11:58It is.
11:59We agree.
11:59It is.
12:00No, but we agree.
12:01I don't understand.
12:02No, we don't.
12:03How do we not?
12:04All right.
12:06That's exactly what I would want Troy Aikman's opinion on.
12:08The first thing I go, what do you think it would be, kicker?
12:11I mean, you made it sound like he could, you know, ask about that.
12:16Obviously, the first thing I want is his opinion on Malik-Willis and deciding what we're going to do with
12:19the quarterback position.
12:20Right.
12:21Okay.
12:24So, just out of curiosity, you would hire Dan Marino and Troy Aikman to run the organization?
12:33Dan Marino doesn't want to do it.
12:34I mean, Dan Marino has had the opportunity to be around the Dolphins forever.
12:37He very clearly wants to hobnob, golf, and show up every once in a while.
12:40How do you know if Troy Aikman wants to do it?
12:43Troy Aikman's been on the record saying he wants to run an organization.
12:46He's very recently been on the record with that.
12:48And you think he would be more qualified than John Eric Sullivan?
12:52I'm not saying more qualified.
12:54Let John Eric Sullivan do his job.
12:56Plenty of guys have guys that oversee things as well.
12:58Plenty of guys do.
13:00Or bring him in for a sounding board.
13:02And he doesn't want a sound board.
13:03He wants to be in his foxhole thinking that he's got everything figured out.
13:06He does not.
13:07Which is fine.
13:07I get it.
13:08You're 0-5.
13:08You want to try and figure things out.
13:10Most bosses are like that.
13:11Seems like you're underutilizing the tools at your disposal.
13:14And that's not exactly the smartest thing.
13:16All right.
13:17You know who had that problem?
13:18Flores.
13:18Flores went to his foxhole.
13:19He didn't want to talk to anybody for help.
13:22And it ultimately was his downfall.
13:23And he was right.
13:25Well, on some things.
13:26Not on everything.
13:27Okay.
13:29That team certainly turned it around with no assistance.
13:34They did turn it around quickly with some different acquisitions for sure.
13:42But you do as a coach need to be able to trust your coaches, do you not?
13:45Have you not seen that with other coaches?
13:48Yeah.
13:49Okay.
13:49That's not what he was doing.
13:50So, that's all I'm saying.
13:51You know?
13:53I don't know why you're bucking against something we both agree on.
13:55No, we don't agree.
13:56Please don't say that.
13:57We do not agree.
13:58We do not agree.
13:59You just said that you were going to use them to figure out this position.
14:01We do not agree.
14:02The people that you want in power are in power.
14:08If they should call and ask about, ask Troy Aikman about Malik or anything like that, that's a bonus.
14:14But that shouldn't be a requirement.
14:17For you to be saying, why didn't they talk to Troy Aikman is ridiculous.
14:20Because it's not his job.
14:22That's why.
14:23Well, his job is consultant.
14:28You know what you do with a consultant?
14:30Right.
14:30He said, wasn't Marino a GM, a team president at one point for like 12 seconds.
14:35Yeah, and he quit.
14:35He didn't want to do it.
14:36Right.
14:36That's why I'm not saying.
14:37That's why I'm saying not Marino.
14:38He doesn't want the job.
14:39He's had that opportunity.
14:40Nobody's had that opportunity to have the job more than Dan Marino.
14:42And very clearly doesn't want the job.
14:45Just because you're a Hall of Fame quarterback doesn't mean you can run an organization.
14:49I'm not saying can.
14:50I'm saying he doesn't.
14:51Dan Marino doesn't want the job.
14:53Right.
14:54Okay.
14:54We're in agreement.
14:55Dan Marino doesn't want the job.
14:57Troy Aikman does.
14:58But what makes him qualified?
15:00He's Troy Aikman, baby.
15:02That's not.
15:03And that's my point.
15:06That's my whole point right there.
15:08And so what's your point?
15:10You are a name floozy.
15:13Big name.
15:13I want you around.
15:15I do like names.
15:16I do like names.
15:16But you want to know something?
15:17But that doesn't mean they're qualified to do the job.
15:19I don't pick these guys.
15:21So what?
15:21So you trust him to pick the guys, but you don't trust him to help these guys?
15:27That makes no sense.
15:28Wait.
15:28You can pick a guy to run the business.
15:33It doesn't mean you know the business better than them.
15:35You're just like going against me.
15:37No.
15:37Malik Willis' point.
15:38You agree with him on Malik Willis' point.
15:40You agree that he's qualified to pick the guys, but he's not qualified to help the guys?
15:44That makes no sense.
15:46Okay.
15:47All right.
15:48All right.
15:52See, this –
15:55I'm trying to think of a scenario that I could put it in every day.
16:00So let's think of it this way.
16:02You would have been making –
16:03Hold on.
16:04Hold on.
16:04Let me go.
16:06Let's put it this way.
16:09If or when, however long that may be, because Len –
16:13I'd rather have Len forever, and he's not leaving, but he's retired.
16:17I figured that one out.
16:18Nice try.
16:19Yeah.
16:19They tried making you –
16:20He can't quit us.
16:21Yeah.
16:22So –
16:22What a sucker.
16:25Say we get a new program director.
16:28Yep.
16:28And he starts hovering around the show telling you what you should be doing or not doing.
16:38You would kind of be like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, what are we doing?
16:41For five weeks is my show 0 and 5.
16:48No.
16:50He can't necessarily measure that.
16:52You've been bombed.
16:54No, I haven't.
16:55See?
16:56What are you doing?
16:58I know.
16:59I'm sorry.
17:00It's my bad.
17:00Just go to break.
17:01You guys are ridiculous.
17:03My bad.
17:03My bad.
17:04Why do I fall for it?
17:05I don't know.
17:07I want to right now punch myself into jail.
17:10I got you back.
17:10The thing is that you notice it, then you continue on, and then you fall for it again.
17:14I know.
17:15I know.
17:15I got you back.
17:15Make it make sense.
17:16Stupid.
17:17You were distracted, and now I got you back.
17:19That was his plot the whole time.
17:22That's why I don't need a consultant.
17:27Back after this.
17:28Are we 0 and 5 is the response.
17:31Are we 0 and 5 is the response?
