01:00But let's begin tonight with something a little bit different.
01:04We're going to...
01:07I want to show you a moment from a town hall in Michigan
01:11that was held with our esteemed, or certainly esteemed,
01:15Vice President Jeffrey Dahmer Vance.
01:21I'm pretty sure that's what that stands for.
01:23A woman in the audience at this town hall politely, concisely, powerfully
01:29confronted the Vice President on his, uh, let's call it
01:33record of dehumanizing rhetoric towards immigrants.
01:36Why are you scapegoating immigrants for the issues you're supposed to be solving as the Vice President?
01:43I appreciate the question.
01:45In no way, not on any planet, not in any timeline,
01:50does J.D. Vance appreciate that question.
01:56He f***ing hates that question.
02:02It makes his beard itch.
02:06And that might be your first tell that the answer that this young woman is going to get
02:12is not going to be the real one.
02:14But, uh, I'm sorry to interrupt.
02:15Continue.
02:16I appreciate the question.
02:18And I-I would say, um,
02:20and-and to the extent that my rhetoric has been imperfect here,
02:23that's on me.
02:25Oh!
02:26Is it your rhetoric?
02:28Oh, uh,
02:29po-buddy's nerfect.
02:33So-sometimes you incite violence against vulnerable communities,
02:37and then later on, you apologize.
02:39I mean, we all read
02:40mine bad.
02:42Sure, no, I get that.
02:52That's the Hitler emoji that we all get.
02:57So-so...
02:59The dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants,
03:02which all of us thought was a cornerstone
03:05and intentional strategy of both Donald Trump and J.D. Vance's rise to power,
03:09including falsely accusing an entire community of Haitian people
03:13of eating people's pets,
03:16which Vance admitted was just a useful lie.
03:20Actually, that wasn't intentional.
03:22It was all just sloppy word choice.
03:25That-that was all on a hymn.
03:26Oh, eating them?
03:28No, no, no.
03:28I meant to say,
03:29they're booping the dogs.
03:31They're booping the cats.
03:34The point is,
03:35I take J.D. Vance at his word,
03:37and I'm sure
03:38that the vice president will do better
03:40the next time he has an opportunity
03:41not to demonize immigrants,
03:43which, as luck would have it,
03:45may or may not be just two days later.
03:47But just keep that in mind.
03:48We're going to hold on to that for a little bit later
03:50as we move to France,
03:52where Paris is burning,
03:54and not in the
03:54oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt, oomt.
03:58Not in that way.
03:59Not in the good, fun way.
04:01It's burning more in the
04:02ah, it's actually f***ing burning!
04:05This weekend,
04:06riots exploded throughout France.
04:08Cars were on fire.
04:09Buildings were on fire.
04:11Pants were on fire.
04:19Apparently, many of the protesters were
04:21liars.
04:25Who even is rioting?
04:28Officials in France have said
04:30this is a left-wing movement
04:32that is behind the protests
04:33and not immigration.
04:35It's not anything to do with
04:37Islam or Muslim communities.
04:40This is French society
04:42across the border.
04:44Got it.
04:46Not Muslims.
04:47Not immigrants.
04:49Remember what we were talking about
04:51earlier in the show?
04:53J.D. Vance,
04:55here's a chance
04:56to perfect your rhetoric.
04:58Vice President J.D. Vance
04:59had a tweet, uh, overnight.
05:01Western liberals imported
05:03the third world into France.
05:04They ignored fundamental questions
05:05of assimilation and compatibility.
05:08They were told it would lead to this
05:09and they didn't listen.
05:13They're eating the cats!
05:15They're eating the dogs!
05:17I'm sorry, Vance.
05:18Are you seriously suggesting
05:20that immigrants
05:22have brought a culture
05:23of revolution and protest
05:25to France?
05:29What are you talking about?
05:38have you ever been to the theater?
05:41Can you not hear
05:43the people sing?
05:45Do you know why
05:47Versailles
05:48is a museum?
05:50It used to be
05:52someone's house
05:53full of people
05:55with heads.
05:59Do you want to know
06:00how French,
06:01real French,
06:03these protests were?
06:04The latest demonstrations
06:05saw protesters
06:06swarm Paris'
06:08historic
06:08Place de la Bastille.
06:10They stormed
06:11the Bastille!
06:14Other than adultery,
06:16it's the most French thing
06:17you can do!
06:21It's like blaming
06:23immigrants in America
06:24for remembering
06:25the Alamo.
06:28Riots
06:28are just a part
06:30of the general
06:31ambiance of France.
06:32I mean,
06:33this couple
06:34didn't even
06:35f***ing get up!
06:36They're just sitting there.
06:39They're just sitting there
06:41finishing
06:43their dessert cigarette.
06:47This lady here,
06:48she doesn't even
06:48let it get in
06:49the way of her
06:50cardio.
06:52She could have
06:53made it a Peloton
06:54day inside.
06:55No!
06:56She's just outside
06:57jogging around.
06:57I'm sure there were
06:58foreigners in the protest.
07:00Mostly they're just
07:00looking for their
07:01Airbnb.
07:05Which is not to say
07:06that the riots
07:07were not a terribly
07:07serious issue,
07:08or that France
07:09is not on the verge
07:10of dissolution,
07:11as it almost
07:13always is.
07:15But just as
07:16Napoleon
07:17rose from the ashes
07:18of the French Revolution,
07:19so now
07:20will Emmanuel
07:21Morin
07:22I don't know
07:28if that's exactly
07:29right.
07:31Emmanuel
07:32Morin
07:34will take
07:35charge of his
07:35country from
07:36Le Réum
07:37de Situation!
07:38Emmanuel Macron
07:39facing backlash
07:40for deciding
07:41to attend
07:42a Celine Dion
07:43concert with
07:44with his wife
07:45on the eve
07:45of the protest.
07:57Okay, first of all,
07:59who goes to a concert
08:00with their actual
08:01wife?
08:11for a second,
08:12you weren't sure.
08:13Is that too soon?
08:13Can we laugh at that?
08:16And second of all,
08:18Celine Dion concert?
08:19A little on the
08:19metaphorical nose,
08:20yeah, Mr. President?
08:21As your country
08:22falls apart,
08:23you stand on the deck
08:24enjoying the dulcet tones
08:26of the theme song
08:27from Titanic?
08:31By the next night,
08:32Macron realized
08:33the seriousness
08:33as he gave
08:34a national address
08:35to the people
08:36of France.
08:37Ces manifestants
08:38ont fait part
08:39d'une inquiétude
08:40sur le coût de la vie,
08:41sur le prix
08:41des carburants.
08:42Oh my God,
08:43is this dude
08:45still drunk?
08:46He's not even
08:47making sense!
08:48Oh, is that
08:49like gibberish?
08:51What does that
08:52even mean?
08:54Get a hold
08:54of yourself,
08:55dude,
08:55this is important.
08:56What's that?
08:58Oh, they do?
09:00All of them?
09:02The whole country?
09:03And that all
09:04makes sense
09:04to each other.
09:05They can understand that.
09:06All right?
09:07I mean,
09:08it's news to me.
09:08I mean,
09:09when I'm there,
09:09they speak
09:10perfectly good,
09:11reluctant English.
09:14But I apologize,
09:16monsieur.
09:17Why are they protesting?
09:19These demonstrators
09:20express concern
09:21about the cost
09:22of living
09:22and fuel prices,
09:23which stem
09:24from the conflict
09:25that began
09:25in the Persian Gulf.
09:27Holy shit!
09:29In France,
09:31they've burned down
09:32an entire city
09:33because of a war
09:34they didn't start
09:36and aren't
09:37even any part of.
09:38And here,
09:40in the country
09:40that started the war,
09:42we're not even sure
09:44we're going to get
09:45to take back
09:45the house.
09:48I mean,
09:49we're so mad
09:49about this war,
09:50we might vote.
09:56But at least now,
09:58yeah!
09:58Get out of there!
10:00Yeah!
10:04Get out of there!
10:06Our country
10:06happens to be
10:07flame retardant.
10:11Or one of those
10:12two words.
10:16Don't,
10:17that's not even,
10:17I wouldn't even
10:18encourage that.
10:19I wouldn't,
10:19honestly,
10:22even I would cancel
10:23me for that one.
10:25But at least now
10:26we know that
10:26all of the world
10:27is upset
10:28over these high prices
10:29that have been caused
10:30by this Middle Eastern war.
10:32This isn't really
10:33a Middle Eastern problem,
10:34this is more
10:35of a Russia problem.
10:36Oh!
10:37Wait, I'm,
10:38whoa,
10:38what, what?
10:39I'm sorry.
10:40I'm sorry,
10:41Mr. President,
10:41are you,
10:42are you saying
10:44that these high prices
10:45are because of the war
10:46in Ukraine
10:47that Russia started?
10:48Because I thought
10:49things like the
10:50diesel shortage
10:51were because of the war
10:52in the region
10:52where all the diesel
10:53comes from.
10:54I've been looking
10:55at this chart.
10:55I don't know if you can
10:56see it here.
10:56This is the price
10:57of diesel.
10:58And I don't know if
10:58you know there,
10:59there's like a list.
10:59You can see it there.
11:00It's a very subtle,
11:01a little bit of an uptick
11:04to the cost of diesel
11:05at the point where
11:06I can't really quite read it,
11:08exactly when the Iran war started.
11:11I'm not saying
11:11correlation is causation
11:12or that the war in Ukraine
11:13hasn't caused fluctuations
11:15in diesel prices,
11:16but the little bump here
11:17statisticians,
11:17statisticians would refer to
11:18as the exact
11:19day.
11:21So,
11:23but
11:24seeding the point,
11:25if it is the war
11:26in Russia and Ukraine,
11:28how do we fix that?
11:29Today,
11:30President Trump
11:31announced that he'd struck
11:32an energy ceasefire
11:33with Ukraine
11:34and Russia.
11:36Oh,
11:37my God,
11:37that's actually,
11:38thank God.
11:39I'm sorry,
11:40I was going to make a joke.
11:41That's,
11:41thank God.
11:43Adhering to that
11:44energy ceasefire
11:46will certainly
11:46give world markets
11:48a chance
11:49to recover.
11:50You know what,
11:51I'm sorry,
11:51miss,
11:52I didn't let you finish
11:52your sentence.
11:53hours later,
11:54the Russians
11:54hit a neighborhood
11:55in the Ukrainian city
11:56of Kharkiv,
11:57including a power plant.
12:00Oh!
12:05Well,
12:06luckily,
12:06just one month ago,
12:07Trump signed into law
12:08the Lindsey O.
12:09Graham.
12:10I don't want to tell,
12:11I don't want to tell you
12:12what the O stands for.
12:14Oh!
12:19Sanctioning,
12:19settle down!
12:20No,
12:22you know what,
12:23I'm canceling
12:24you people
12:25for that one.
12:26The Lindsey O.
12:27Graham Sanctioning
12:28Russia and Iran
12:28Act of 2026,
12:30it will penalize
12:31anyone
12:32who buys
12:33Russian oil.
12:34The Senate
12:34sent a clear message
12:36to our adversaries.
12:37What we're doing
12:38here today
12:38is standing
12:39with a steel spine.
12:40We are standing
12:41against Putin's
12:42aggression.
12:43It will cut off
12:44the flow of cash.
12:46that powers
12:47Putin's war machine.
12:49Ha ha!
12:51That was one month ago.
12:52Take that,
12:53Vladimir!
12:54President Trump
12:55smartly recognizing
12:56the role Putin's war
12:57has played
12:58in rising energy prices,
13:00even though,
13:00obviously,
13:00from the math
13:01that I showed you earlier,
13:02it's really not about that.
13:04But still,
13:05nevertheless,
13:06we will not waver.
13:08President Trump
13:09waived sanctions
13:10on Russian fuel sales.
13:12Announcing a Russian
13:13diesel deal.
13:14The deal would provide
13:15Putin an influx
13:16of billions of dollars
13:17to fund the Ukraine war.
13:22We will not waver,
13:24but we will waive.
13:27Spell dif...
13:28homonyms!
13:29Damn it!
13:31Wait,
13:31if Russia's invasion
13:32of Ukraine
13:33is the cause
13:34of, uh, uh,
13:36this,
13:36why are we making
13:37a deal
13:38to give Russia
13:39billions of dollars
13:40to use
13:40in that invasion?
13:42Perhaps
13:43Energy Secretary
13:44Christopher Wright
13:44can explain it.
13:45And if I may use
13:45a visual aid
13:46to help me
13:47with this explanation,
13:48uh,
13:48just to show
13:49how many different...
13:53how many different...
13:54Oh, you know what?
13:56Very sweet.
13:57Very sweet.
14:00Oh, oh, oh,
14:03sweet babushka.
14:07I just wanted
14:08a physical demonstration
14:09of the many layers
14:11of stupidity
14:12that must be
14:12behind this decision.
14:13if Russia
14:15can bring
14:16additional diesel
14:16to the market
14:17and export it,
14:18it would benefit
14:19American consumers.
14:21Drive down energy prices
14:22for Americans.
14:23Oh!
14:24Oh, that's not stupid at all.
14:25This is gonna
14:26lower fuel prices
14:28for Americans,
14:29will it?
14:30That immediate release
14:31of 300,000 tons
14:32of diesel
14:32would have a very little
14:34effect or impact
14:35on prices long term.
14:38Ah!
14:39Ah!
14:45So, uh,
14:47why are we doing it?
14:48Oh, this is
14:49pressuring Russia.
14:53By giving them money?
14:55How is this
14:56punishing Russia?
14:58Oh, I'm sorry.
14:59I apologize.
15:00It's kind of a
15:01more money,
15:02more problems
15:02situation.
15:04Russia does not
15:05have diesel to export.
15:10So why are we
15:11giving them money
15:11for it?
15:12The only way
15:13they can get
15:14additional diesel
15:15to export
15:16is if they
15:16turn down
15:17the conflict
15:18with Ukraine.
15:19They have to
15:20either get an
15:20energy ceasefire,
15:22they have to
15:22either end the war,
15:24or they have to
15:25reduce their war
15:26efforts.
15:27This is a motivation
15:28for Russia
15:29to figure out
15:30how they can
15:30actually export
15:31some diesel.
15:33Ah!
15:34Ah!
15:36Ah!
15:37Ah!
15:37Ah!
15:38Ah!
15:39Ah!
15:39Ah!
15:40Ah!
15:40Ah!
15:41Ah!
15:42Ah!
15:43Why would we
15:44motivate a group
15:45to sell diesel
15:46when we just
15:47put sanctions
15:48on them
15:48for selling diesel?
15:50Doing the opposite
15:51within a month
15:52is insane.
15:53It is illogical.
15:55It is incoherent.
15:56This is quite
15:57innovative, actually.
15:59Oh.
16:02Damn you,
16:03alliteration!
16:05I think I might
16:06have discovered
16:06the real reason.
16:08is there.
16:09Oh.
16:11Look.
16:11It's actually...
16:12Oh, that's the...
16:26I'm sorry.
16:27I forgot how many
16:28dolls I had to open
16:28to get to the people,
16:29and then I realized
16:31that I'd gotten
16:31to the thing,
16:32and then I just had
16:33C'est bon, c'est bon, c'est bon.
17:03C'est bon, c'est bon.
17:33...Ukraine saying access to Elon Musk's Starlink system has suddenly been restricted, limiting Ukraine's ability to fend off Russian attacks.
17:42The Starlink was blocked, of course, by the SpaceX and, of course, by the United States.
17:50I sent them, of course, connect and ask, what's going on, maybe technical problems.
17:56I hear you, brother. Dealing with Internet providers is a nightmare!
18:05Did they at least give you a service window, like, you got to be in Ukraine from two to six?
18:10Sir, you know what? I got you. Let me... You're a busy man. You got a war to run. Let
18:15me deal with this for you.
18:17Um, I got a little time. Let me call Starlink Customer Service, and I'm sure we'll be able to work
18:23this out, okay?
18:24Let me just get, uh, uh, what's the number again? Oh, right, it's...
18:29Okay, here we go. We got Starlink Customer Service. Yeah. Yeah.
18:33Gary, what's going on?
18:34Oh, hey! Hey! Uh, Starlink Customer Service. I'm calling on behalf of my friend Ukraine.
18:39Their Starlink speed slowed down, and before you ask, uh, it is plugged in. They restarted the router.
18:44Um, do you know anything about this problem?
18:47We had nothing to do with it. I don't... I don't...
18:48The United States, nobody ordered that Starlink speed to be slowed down. It sort of happened.
18:54Oh, oh! Oh! Oh! It happened! It happened! Totally believable.
19:01Uh, however it happened, can we just get Starlink back up and running for these guys?
19:05Star Shield or Star Link?
19:09I don't know what service he signed up for. I think it's... I don't... I didn't even know there was
19:15a Star Shield.
19:16It's not, at this moment, available to Ukraine, and that's under conversation.
19:19Sir, then what the f***? All right, I'm sorry.
19:23I know this isn't your decision. You're just trying to help.
19:26May I talk to your supervisor? Is there someone else that I can talk to?
19:32Oh, for f***'s sake.
19:36They got me on... I'm terribly sorry. They got me on hold. I'm just gonna...
19:43Hello?
19:43This... Oh!
19:45How are you? This is the president.
19:47Oh!
19:48Sir, sir, sir, I'm calling on behalf of my friend.
19:51Do you know who cut off Ukraine's access to the full speed of Starlink or Star Shield, whatever it's called?
19:59I didn't do that. No, we didn't do that at all.
20:02In fact, I don't know where it is. I don't even think it was slowed down, but...
20:06From what I understand, because I just checked this morning.
20:10I'm telling you!
20:11It's not the same... It's slow!
20:14The problem is on your end!
20:16We ran the diagnostics. It's on your end!
20:19Was it not?
20:20I checked it this morning. They're saying it's the same as it always has been.
20:24So you're saying it's on our end?
20:27Just hold on a second. And please don't hang up, because I don't have a direct line.
20:29I don't want to do this all over again. Hold on just one second.
20:34They're saying that it's on our end.
20:36They're saying it's not working on our end, and that all the speeds are the same.
20:40They checked it this morning, and it's not going through.
20:43Is it on our end? Is it us?
20:45Has the system been fully restored?
20:48No.
20:49No.
20:52All right. Well, hold on.
20:53Oh, God damn it! They put me on hold again!
20:58All right!
21:04This is insane.
21:05I want to talk to somebody on customers' own...
21:07Oh, my God.
21:08Hey, Ryan Reynolds here.
21:09No! No!
21:14When we come back, David Coren will be in the studio.
21:16Don't go away.
21:18Thank you.
21:32Hey, welcome back to The Daily Show.
21:33My guest tonight is the Washington Bureau Chief for Mother Jones
21:38and best-selling author whose latest book is
21:40How Russia Won, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the Fight for America.
21:44Please welcome to the show, David Coren.
21:46Sir!
21:48Whoa!
21:52Whoa!
21:57Whoa!
22:01Uh, uh, the book is, uh, How Russia Won.
22:04I don't even know where I'm holding it up.
22:05Uh, very timely.
22:07Secondly, this, uh, new sanctions deal
22:12that has been announced, uh, by Donald Trump,
22:15uh, against the, uh, Lindsey Graham Act
22:18that was just passed a month ago.
22:19Yeah.
22:20Is this the culmination?
22:22Is this Trump and Putin becoming,
22:25for lack of a better phrase,
22:27Instagram official?
22:28Is that...
22:29Is this...
22:30Is this the consummation of...
22:32of this?
22:33It is.
22:34I think up to now on Facebook you could say it was complicated, right?
22:38But for about 12 years or so,
22:41Donald Trump has said again and again and again
22:44he wants to be friends with Vladimir Putin.
22:48When he announced the Miss Universe contest
22:49that he used to own,
22:51that he held in 2013,
22:53he said,
22:53will Putin become my new best friend?
22:56Is that when they met?
22:58Did they...
22:59They didn't meet,
22:59although he was obsessed about meeting Putin.
23:01That's all he wanted to do.
23:02He wanted to meet him then.
23:03He wanted to meet him so, so much.
23:05It didn't happen.
23:06And Russia and Soviet officials
23:09since the late 80s
23:10have dangled business deals
23:13in front of Donald Trump
23:14again and again and again.
23:16they've been cultivating him for decades.
23:19Did he resist them?
23:20Well, no.
23:21The deals never...
23:22I don't think they were serious.
23:23I think they let him on.
23:25The deals really never came together.
23:27And it's...
23:28Can you believe that?
23:30From Russia?
23:31From Russia?
23:31How dare they?
23:32And so...
23:33But he has always wanted
23:35to be in business
23:37with Vladimir Putin.
23:39But isn't that just Russian business
23:42that he's comfortable
23:43with the way Russia does business?
23:46He's kind of an oligarch at heart.
23:49I can't imagine,
23:49maybe you're not suggesting this,
23:51that they were grooming him
23:53for some potential political...
23:56No, don't!
23:58I would imagine that
24:00that's how they do business.
24:01Wasn't he laundering oligarch money?
24:02I use the word cultivate,
24:04as they do with many prominent people.
24:06He showed an interest
24:07in doing deals with Russia.
24:09They liked that,
24:10and they've been working
24:11or trying to work with him
24:13for many years.
24:14And when he was around
24:16in that first presidency,
24:18which you might remember...
24:19I don't.
24:19He was...
24:20I know.
24:23There were guardrails.
24:24There were people around him.
24:25He tried to reach out
24:26to Putin again and again.
24:28Remember, Putin was kicked out
24:29of the G8
24:30for taking over
24:31for a big piece of Ukraine
24:32called Crimea.
24:33Yeah.
24:33And so the G8 said,
24:35you can't come and play
24:36with us anymore.
24:37He would go to G8 meetings
24:38to say,
24:39where's Vladimir?
24:40Why is he not here?
24:41He wanted to, you know,
24:43be, you know,
24:44one with him.
24:45And there were guardrails
24:46and it didn't happen.
24:48And though Russia
24:48attacked our 2016 election,
24:51he kept denying it happened.
24:52He aided and abetted the attack
24:54by amplifying Putin's denials.
24:56And it was kind of
24:57a rough time for him.
24:58I think now that he's back
25:00in power,
25:01he sees his chance
25:02to consummate,
25:03as you said,
25:04his man crush
25:05on Vladimir Putin.
25:07Because I don't know
25:09what else to call it.
25:15But why?
25:17But there's a reason.
25:19I mean...
25:19Yes.
25:19You're going to ask why.
25:21I was about to ask you why.
25:22I mean,
25:24we know that he has
25:25an affection
25:26for authoritarian rulers.
25:28He wrote love letters
25:29to Kim Jong-un.
25:30That's right.
25:30He likes Xi Jinping,
25:31Erdogan in Turkey.
25:32But there's something
25:33about Putin that stands out.
25:35And you can look at the,
25:36you know,
25:36the Ukraine war was running
25:38when he came into office.
25:39He saw that as a nuisance.
25:42It was...
25:42The Ukraine war?
25:43The Ukraine war.
25:43It was a nuisance.
25:45To...
25:45To him forging this bond
25:47with Vladimir Putin.
25:50You know...
25:50Now, this is sounding like
25:51some sort of weird
25:52psychosexual.
25:53Like, what do you...
25:54Yes.
25:54I...
25:55I am...
25:56I rue the Ukraine war
25:58keeping me from
25:59my Vladimir.
26:00Like, that just sounds crazy.
26:02But, you know...
26:02But, you know,
26:03if you go back
26:04and you look
26:05at all the times
26:06that he dumped on Zelensky,
26:09blamed Zelensky for the war,
26:11never once blaming Putin
26:13for invading the country,
26:14he often said,
26:16you know,
26:17Vladimir and I
26:18understand each other.
26:19in fact,
26:20we went through
26:21some things together.
26:23People who worked with him...
26:24Yes.
26:25...in the first term...
26:26...worked with Trump
26:26in the first term
26:27were befuddled
26:29by his affection
26:30for Putin.
26:32They just kept trying
26:33to convince him
26:34that Putin's not a good guy
26:35and that we had
26:37a conflict
26:38that we needed
26:38to resolve.
26:39And he just
26:40wouldn't go along
26:41with that.
26:42He kept wanting
26:43to call Putin
26:44and congratulate him
26:45on the most recent elections
26:47that were rigged.
26:49And now...
26:49Putin's election.
26:49Putin's elections.
26:50And now that he's,
26:52you know,
26:52back in office
26:53and I think he's
26:54coming to see
26:55the end
26:55of his second term,
26:58he's...
26:59Okay.
26:59We hope...
27:00We hope...
27:02He's come
27:03to the realization
27:04that he can't wait
27:05for the Ukraine war
27:07to be over.
27:08That that was
27:09getting in the way
27:10and it used to be
27:11once the war's over
27:12we can cut deals
27:13and we can stride
27:14the world together.
27:15And now in the last week
27:16this is the culmination.
27:17This is how Russia won.
27:19He is saying
27:20forget that.
27:21We're going to start
27:22making deals now
27:23regardless of the war.
27:25So this is
27:25forgetting about
27:26maybe the framing
27:28of he wants to be
27:29his best friend
27:29or he wants to be
27:30a man crush.
27:30This is really about
27:32a theory of power
27:35in the world.
27:36The United States
27:37established a world order
27:38after World War II
27:39that was
27:40we were allied
27:41with other liberal
27:42representative democracies
27:43and the rules of the road
27:45and we didn't hate Canada
27:46actually.
27:46They seem very nice.
27:47And now
27:48is this the culmination
27:50of he sees a world order
27:51that is
27:53a triumph for it.
27:54Trump, Putin
27:56and Xi Jinping
27:58basically divide up
27:59the spoils
28:01of what we see.
28:02Is that overstating it?
28:04No.
28:05I think when he looks
28:05one person who worked
28:07with him in the first term
28:08told me
28:08when he looks
28:09at Trump
28:10excuse me
28:10when Trump looks
28:11at Putin
28:11he sees one of the richest
28:13guys in the world
28:14and a guy has total authority
28:16and Trump wants both of that.
28:19So he
28:20so yes
28:21he wants to divide up
28:22the world
28:22the idea that we're
28:24governed by international
28:25laws and rules
28:26is offensive to him.
28:28He doesn't like dealing
28:29with those petty, pesky
28:31little democracies
28:32like they have in Europe
28:33or in Canada.
28:35And this is what
28:36Putin's been aiming at.
28:38This, you know,
28:38this is to Putin
28:39this plays to what Putin
28:40wants.
28:41He wants to restore
28:42the Soviet Russian Empire.
28:44The biggest obstacle
28:46to that is what?
28:47NATO and those Western
28:48liberal representative
28:49governments that you talked
28:50about that used to be led
28:52by the United States.
28:53And so he's waged a shadow
28:55war, which is what I write
28:56about in the book
28:56against the West
28:58and the United States
28:59trying to exacerbate
29:00the political discord
29:02we have here,
29:02which is our own
29:03responsibility
29:04and create divisions
29:05within NATO itself.
29:07And, I mean,
29:08this is his plan.
29:09It's one of the most
29:10successful covert operations
29:12in modern history.
29:13And this week,
29:14we see success.
29:16What would hold him back?
29:19What then would be
29:20the guard?
29:20I mean, it's very cynical
29:22if we're to...
29:23Let me give a countercase
29:26that is slightly less
29:28Dr. Evil in a volcano
29:31and slightly more
29:33or maybe it gives
29:35Trump more credit,
29:36maybe it gives him
29:36less credit.
29:37He's used to running
29:38the Trump organization.
29:40And he was trained
29:41by Roy Cohn.
29:43And the Trump organization
29:44has no sharehold.
29:45It's, I want to get
29:47something done,
29:47I say it.
29:48I do business
29:49like a businessman.
29:51I take the spoils.
29:52Hey, f*** you, pay me.
29:53That kind of thing.
29:54You mean like a mob boss.
29:55Thank you.
29:56And so he is much
29:58more comfortable
29:59going to a country
30:00and going,
30:00who's in charge here?
30:01Who do I have to talk to?
30:02And if the idea is,
30:04well, we have a
30:04parliamentary system
30:05and then if you could
30:06talk to them
30:06and then what we'll do
30:07is we'll take a vote on it.
30:08Right.
30:08So it's less,
30:12I have a vision
30:13of the world
30:16as illiberal powers
30:17and authoritarians,
30:19you know,
30:20basically strip mining
30:21its riches
30:22and more like,
30:23I just like to deal
30:24with one guy.
30:25The issue is,
30:27to what end?
30:28Yes.
30:29Why does he want
30:30to do that?
30:30I'm asking you.
30:31I just asked you.
30:32No, you're asking me.
30:34No, well,
30:35we know that he's made
30:36$7 billion in crypto.
30:38Right.
30:38A lot of this
30:39is personal arrangement.
30:40How much more
30:40does he need?
30:41Well, how many yachts
30:42can you water ski behind?
30:44I think five.
30:46Okay.
30:47I'm good with three.
30:48But, um,
30:49but, you know,
30:50so to what end?
30:51I think, you know,
30:52we see him,
30:52you know,
30:53there's this thing
30:53we have called
30:54the Constitution.
30:56It does...
30:57Tell me more.
30:57Is that in this book
30:58as well?
30:59It's the appendix, yes.
31:02and he does not want
31:04to adhere to...
31:05He said that democracy
31:06is messy,
31:06and he wants
31:08to have a regime,
31:10I think that's
31:10a fair word for it,
31:12where he gets to rule,
31:13and he gets to enrich.
31:15That includes his clan
31:16and his cronies,
31:17and some of his relatives,
31:18not all of them.
31:19He doesn't like
31:19every one of them.
31:20Sure.
31:20Right?
31:21And so,
31:22and he looks at Putin,
31:23and he goes,
31:23that's kind of a model.
31:25That's a model.
31:26He sees that as a...
31:27But there's also,
31:28I mean,
31:29I keep going back to this.
31:30There's something
31:32personal there.
31:33You know,
31:33the book opens
31:34with a scene
31:35that you'll remember
31:36a year ago, August,
31:37when Putin flies to Alaska.
31:39Sure.
31:40He's a pariah.
31:40No other head of state
31:42will meet with him,
31:43but he flies to Alaska,
31:44Trump's invitation
31:45to supposedly resolve
31:47the war on Ukraine,
31:48which doesn't,
31:49of course, happen.
31:49Putin comes down,
31:51red carpet.
31:52Yes.
31:52Putin,
31:52Trump's waiting
31:54at the end
31:54of the red carpet.
31:55Go back and look.
31:56This is on YouTube.
31:57He's bouncing up and down,
32:00clapping his hands.
32:01He looks like a kid
32:02at Christmas morning.
32:04No,
32:04this is a guy,
32:05to be fair,
32:06he is delighted.
32:07You don't know
32:07what music was playing.
32:10That's true.
32:11It might have been
32:12very much on beat.
32:15It is,
32:16he,
32:17he,
32:17but to the point of like,
32:19the phone call he made
32:21with Ukraine,
32:22which he does have
32:22antipathy for,
32:23where he threatened
32:24their military shipments
32:26unless they would get him
32:28dirt on Joe Biden,
32:30he referred to as
32:31a perfect phone call.
32:32What I'm saying is,
32:34he,
32:35he does business
32:36in a corrupt
32:37and extortionate manner.
32:41so he doesn't view,
32:42there's nothing wrong
32:43with Vladimir Putin.
32:44It's,
32:44it's what you would get away with
32:46if you could get away with it.
32:47Which is what he wants to do.
32:49There's no moral judgment on him.
32:50Yes.
32:51Which is why
32:52he doesn't care
32:53about Ukrainian democracy.
32:56The fact that Putin
32:57invaded Ukraine
33:00doesn't bother him.
33:01In fact,
33:02you know,
33:02we see what,
33:03you know,
33:03what happened
33:04in the last couple of days
33:05with him
33:06basically saying,
33:07this is Zelensky's fault.
33:08He called Zelensky
33:10a dictator
33:11the other day.
33:12He has never
33:13called Putin a dictator.
33:14He's never blamed Putin
33:16for invading Russia.
33:18You know,
33:18there's no peace there.
33:19He blames Zelensky.
33:21There's a very simple way
33:21to end the war.
33:22Putin could
33:24end the war.
33:25Right.
33:25Right?
33:25You could leave.
33:26You could just,
33:26okay.
33:27It's not his, right.
33:27My bad.
33:28My bad.
33:29I'm sorry.
33:29I'm taking the troops back.
33:30But he never puts pressure
33:32on Putin.
33:32In your mind,
33:34does Donald Trump
33:35truly believe
33:36that the world
33:38would be a safer,
33:39more stable,
33:41more prosperous place
33:43if it was run
33:45by three authoritarians,
33:48a triumvirate
33:49of Russia,
33:50China,
33:51and the United States?
33:53Does he truly believe
33:54that those alliances
33:56are not what,
33:58uh,
33:58keeps us
33:59on a more prosperous path?
34:01I think,
34:02John,
34:02you're giving him
34:03too much credit.
34:04By the way,
34:05first time
34:07for everything.
34:09Finally.
34:10It's been a while.
34:13He was very good
34:14on The Apprentice.
34:15I remember watching
34:16The Apprentice
34:16and thinking,
34:17that's a good show.
34:18Yeah,
34:18he was okay on SNL.
34:19Right.
34:20Right?
34:20But you're saying
34:22that he's thinking
34:22about the stability
34:24and security
34:25of the rest of the world.
34:27I don't think he is.
34:29I think this is
34:30very much driven
34:31from what he wants
34:32for himself
34:33and for those around him.
34:34I mean, listen,
34:35I mean,
34:35do you think
34:36he watches the show?
34:37Because I would love to...
34:38This show?
34:39You think he watches this show?
34:40I don't think he has cable.
34:41No, I don't know.
34:41I actually...
34:42Because, by the way,
34:43South Park is on before us.
34:44I'm pretty sure
34:45he doesn't watch.
34:46Because I would love
34:47to sit down
34:47and talk to him
34:48because he doesn't
34:49talk in those terms.
34:50If he has a geopolitical theory
34:52about why you can sabotage
34:54democracy in Ukraine,
34:56toss them overboard
34:57and cut deals with a guy
34:58who's an indicted war criminal
35:00who has kidnapped
35:01thousands of Ukrainian
35:02children
35:03and who's lobbing bombs
35:04at civilian sites.
35:06If he has a geopolitical theory
35:07about why that's good
35:08for the rest of us,
35:10I'd like to hear it.
35:12I mean,
35:13I really would like to hear it.
35:14Can I tell you
35:15what I think it is?
35:17Do you ever watch
35:18Peaky Blinders?
35:20Oh, yes.
35:21Okay.
35:21You'll like this.
35:22Okay, good.
35:23All right.
35:24Do you remember
35:25the Vendetta season
35:28with Adrian Brody
35:29when he played Luca...
35:32The guy from...
35:33Right, from Italy
35:34and then he came down.
35:35So,
35:37there was a theory of power
35:39that Thomas Shelby
35:41learned from the Vendetta
35:44and that was
35:45the theory called
35:45big f***ing small.
35:48And that's how
35:48he ends up getting revenge.
35:50Yeah.
35:50Don't you think
35:51that is...
35:52We're all looking
35:53for some larger geopolitical
35:55when in his mind
35:56he's like,
35:56big f***ing small.
35:57Like, that's how
35:58it's supposed to be.
35:59And I'm big,
36:00so I f***ing small.
36:01And Putin's big,
36:02so he f***ing small.
36:03And Xi Jinping is big,
36:05and he f***ing small.
36:05He literally just looks at it
36:07and says,
36:07but that's the jungle
36:08and this is the jungle.
36:09Well, you know Stephen Miller.
36:10You know Stephen Miller, right?
36:12I'm familiar.
36:13I mean, he put out
36:14a tweet, an ex,
36:15whatever you call it,
36:16a truth,
36:17well they're not truths,
36:18a couple months ago
36:20in which he said literally
36:21might makes right.
36:23Right.
36:23And that's, you know,
36:24to your point earlier
36:25about having a geopolitical order
36:27that's based on rules
36:29and respects
36:30and even, you know,
36:31honoring international borders.
36:34An agreement.
36:34They say,
36:35to hell with that.
36:37I mean, Trump,
36:38it's just a hindrance
36:39because it gets in the way
36:40of him being
36:41a very corrupt
36:42and rich emperor.
36:44So that's why
36:44he doesn't like these rules.
36:46Right.
36:46And so I think, you know,
36:47yeah, it goes back
36:48to the mob boss.
36:49But did anybody say to him
36:50about the might make rice,
36:52like,
36:52I don't know if you know this,
36:53but like,
36:53that is kind of
36:55what the world tried.
36:56Like,
36:57the whole point
36:57of the post-world order
36:58was,
36:58we were going to try
37:00to move away
37:03because it's getting us
37:04a tremendous amount
37:06of bloodshed.
37:06It's why we did
37:07the Geneva Convention.
37:08It's why we did
37:09all these treaties
37:10on nuclear weapons.
37:11We thought that
37:13this would move away
37:15from a more
37:16Darwinian approach.
37:18And you see Trump,
37:20you know,
37:20basically dumping
37:21on our alliances.
37:23You mentioned Canada
37:24and NATO.
37:25You know,
37:25he says,
37:26I'm going to take Greenland
37:27if I want to
37:27and throws the NATO alliances.
37:30Because big,
37:30say it with me.
37:32Big,
37:34f***ing small.
37:38You know what?
37:39I don't want to be presumptuous.
37:43When this comes out
37:43in paperback,
37:44that should be the title.
37:49Remarkable.
37:50How does this,
37:51in your mind,
37:53ultimately play out?
37:54Will they do the summit
37:56where Xi Jinping
37:58and Putin,
37:59without Ukraine's involvement,
38:01without Europe's involvement,
38:04decide this is what
38:05we're doing going forward?
38:06Because they will
38:07have a vote in it.
38:08Well,
38:09the other side
38:10always gets a vote.
38:11Right.
38:11They always get a vote.
38:12And so Putin,
38:13as you just referenced,
38:14has called for this summit
38:16with Trump
38:17and Xi Jinping
38:18without Zelensky,
38:20Ukraine,
38:20to resolve the war.
38:22Well,
38:23how do you think
38:23Putin wants to
38:24resolve the war?
38:27Amicably?
38:28Exactly.
38:29And fairly.
38:30And so,
38:31I mean,
38:31I think it's going to be
38:32very tough for Trump
38:34to say no.
38:34He has invited him
38:36kindly
38:36to the G20 meeting
38:38that is coincidentally
38:40happening at his
38:41Doral resort
38:42in Florida,
38:43right?
38:44Just a coincidence.
38:45Before you go
38:46into your whole spiel,
38:47no markups.
38:48He has been very clear
38:49all the food
38:50is going to be coming
38:51at wholesale prices.
38:52That's true.
38:53And so,
38:53he's going to be
38:54meeting him in December
38:55and I think
38:56it's going to be
38:57very hard for him
38:57to say no
38:58to a,
38:59it's not a one-on-one,
39:01it's a throuple,
39:02right,
39:02that they're going
39:03to try to have.
39:04Now you're back on that.
39:05Now you're back.
39:07I think it's going
39:08Big f***ing hole.
39:10Wouldn't you,
39:10thank you.
39:12You can tell me like that.
39:14Wouldn't,
39:16don't you think
39:17one of the most
39:17difficult parts
39:18about this,
39:18it's one of the few areas
39:20where Donald Trump's
39:21pronouncement,
39:22even,
39:23even more so
39:24than his AI
39:25is now super intelligence,
39:27which nobody
39:27other than
39:28those people
39:30who run tech companies
39:31are now doing
39:32just because
39:32it keeps them
39:33away from regulation.
39:34Almost more
39:35than anything,
39:36Americans
39:37will not accept
39:38the idea
39:39that Vladimir Putin
39:41is an honorable
39:43ally
39:44to the United States
39:45and does not wish
39:46this country ill.
39:48I think most Americans
39:50will not accept that.
39:51The interesting thing,
39:52though,
39:53is that the Republican Party
39:54has gone along
39:56with almost everything
39:57he has done.
39:58Even after passing
39:59the sanction bill
40:00that you've highlighted
40:01earlier on,
40:02you know,
40:02Trump just came along
40:03and we knew
40:05this was going to happen.
40:06And he waived
40:07the sanctions.
40:08He was not going
40:09to accept this.
40:10He has tried
40:11to weaken
40:11or write off
40:13every sanction
40:13that has been imposed
40:15on Vladimir Putin
40:17since he's been
40:18president
40:18both times.
40:20And so,
40:21you know,
40:22they sent a letter.
40:24Six or ten of them
40:25sent a letter
40:26to Trump
40:26saying,
40:27we disagree.
40:28Boom!
40:29Boom!
40:29And I bet
40:30it was maybe
40:31at some point
40:32italicized.
40:34Bold!
40:34Maybe bold?
40:35There's probably
40:36an underlining.
40:37But no exclamation
40:38To whom
40:39it may concern!
40:41No exclamation
40:42And so,
40:43has anyone,
40:45you know,
40:45really come down
40:47hard on him?
40:47And that's why,
40:49in my mind,
40:49you can make all the cases
40:50about the economy
40:51and things like that.
40:52In my mind,
40:53there's not a Republican
40:54in Congress
40:55who deserves
40:55to be re-elected
40:56because of the fecklessness
40:58in which they have managed
41:00this very...
41:02Not a Republican.
41:04Not a...
41:04Oh,
41:05and the crowd
41:05goes nuts!
41:09Thanks for being here.
41:11How Russia won!
41:13Amy Korn,
41:14quick break.
41:15We'll be right back
41:15after this.
41:31Hey, everybody!
41:33That is our show
41:36for tonight.
41:37I just wanted to mention
41:37before we go,
41:39a little bit of good news.
41:40For those of you
41:40who enjoy
41:41The Daily Show,
41:44I'm sure you're
41:45out there somewhere.
41:48We told you
41:49a while back
41:50that we were going
41:51to do everything
41:51in our power
41:52to continue
41:53to continue
41:53to be on the air
41:54through
41:56this next
41:56presidential election.
41:58And I'm truly happy
41:59to announce
42:00that, uh,
42:02it has come to pass.
42:03We were...
42:04We've been going to...
42:16We're very appreciative
42:19to the...
42:21To the...
42:22To the dancer
42:23in the sky.
42:25Sky dance.
42:28But I just want to say,
42:29you know,
42:30we couldn't have done it
42:31without the support
42:32of the audience
42:34that has stayed with us
42:36through all the ups
42:37and downs
42:37of this
42:38very unusual moment
42:40in the industry
42:41that we have.
42:42And so we thank
42:43the audience
42:44for all of this
42:45because without
42:45your support,
42:46there'd be no leverage
42:47for us
42:48to keep this damn thing
42:50on the air.
42:50And for me personally,
42:52to just thank
42:53the staff
42:54and the crew
42:55who work on this show
42:57day out
42:58and day out
42:59and, uh,
43:02keep it
43:03at the level,
43:05uh,
43:06that has...
43:07that has...
43:08that has made it so good.
43:10And I, you know,
43:10I never said this before,
43:12but...
43:12And you may not even know this,
43:13uh,
43:14but when I'm not here,
43:16they still have to do shows.
43:19I mean,
43:20can you believe it?
43:20They're working more than
43:21one day a week.
43:22I mean,
43:23sucker!
43:25Uh,
43:26but thank you all very much.
43:27We-we couldn't be happier
43:28and-and we're delighted
43:30to keep this damn thing going.
43:31Here it is.
43:32Your moment is in.
43:33Mohammed
43:35Abdul
43:36El-Sayed.
43:37You know,
43:38I took a lot of heat
43:39for calling him Mohammed.
43:40And I said,
43:41I don't care.
43:42I'm the president
43:43of the United States.
43:45I can call you
43:45whatever the hell I want.
43:46His name is actually
43:47Abdullah
43:48something-a-la-la.
43:49It's Abdullah
43:50ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
43:53Sorry.
43:53Sorry.
