The Morning Shift debates the Atlanta Falcons' decision to keep four quarterbacks on the active roster. Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan clash over Jack Strand's role, questioning whether the Falcons can truly develop a fourth-string QB behind Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, and Andy Dalton, or if holding him on the 53-man roster is a waste of space.

00:00I just don't understand for the life of me how this plays out for Jack Strand.
00:03That's what I can't figure out.
00:05That's why it's so strange to me that you're still dealing
00:07with a four-quarterback situation.
00:09What's the best-case scenario for Jack Strand?
00:12That's what I can't map out.
00:14Well, I don't think they're thinking the best,
00:17the worst-case scenario for them is that they cut him and he gets picked up.
00:22The best-case scenario is you don't have to even worry about him
00:27and you can hold him over because they're clearly not worried about the roster spots.
00:34For whatever reason, even though we worry about it, I do, I think about it,
00:38how to use positions better,
00:40they're set that they're good with four quarterbacks and two running backs.
00:44But here's the issue with it.
00:46You say you don't have to worry about Jack Strand, he's just there.
00:48So then what's the best, like what scenario is it that Jack Strand is useful?
00:53That's what I can't figure out.
00:54I don't think they're looking at it that way, though.
00:56I don't think they're looking at – that's what I'm trying to –
00:59Then why are they – but they have to be because you just said
01:02they're worried about him getting picked up somewhere else.
01:03So why is the worst?
01:04Are you talking about 26 or –
01:07Period.
01:08Future.
01:08Future.
01:09Any point.
01:09I think in the future, they see best case ever, like best day ever,
01:18he turns into something.
01:20Like a starter or at least a very valuable backup.
01:24It's – I'm not telling you I know this and that's what they're saying.
01:28I'm telling you that's what I'm deducing from what they're – the way they're
01:31treating this.
01:32I agree with you, but just let me – let me lay this out.
01:35How does that happen?
01:36If he's not even good enough right now to be your third stringer to the point
01:40where you bring in Andy Dalton, how do you get from he's our fourth string
01:44quarterback to he is our starter or backup anytime soon?
01:47Because if Michael Penix isn't good enough this year, what are you going to do
01:50probably next year?
01:51You're going to draft a quarterback.
01:53So then where does that leave Jack Strand?
01:55Or you're going to sign someone.
01:56If he's your fourth stringer this year and then all of a sudden he's your backup
01:58next year when he hasn't done anything?
01:59Well, I think that's what I – that's what I'm saying.
02:02There's lots of backup quarterbacks in the NFL that haven't done anything.
02:04There's also guys that have done a lot.
02:06Did you know –
02:07But they usually don't come from the fourth stringers.
02:09Did you know – well, I don't know this, so I'm asking you.
02:13And maybe you don't know and maybe we can – Dylan can help us because he knows
02:18more about the Eagles than most of us because of his – his girl is a big Eagles fan
02:25and she knows everything about him.
02:26Where the hell did Tanner McKee come from?
02:29This isn't the first time he started, though.
02:31This weekend was his third or the fourth.
02:34But where did he come from?
02:36How did he get through it?
02:37So they drafted him and they just kind of breeded him up and then he eventually
02:41became the backup.
02:41And so –
02:43That's –
02:44Yeah.
02:44That's –
02:45It was a –
02:46The only thing I can think of.
02:47For Tanner McKee, it was – I'll say for Tanner McKee, it was a two-, three-year
02:52process before he got in the role he is now.
02:55I know we've got to move on.
02:56The problem that I'm trying to outline here is it's not that third string quarterbacks
03:01can't come from places.
03:01It's why if he's not good enough to be the third stringer, is he on the active roster
03:07at this point?
03:07Because I don't know what that roadmap looks like moving forward.
03:10That he goes from fourth stringer on active roster to now, in a year's time, you're
03:17either dealing with being that Michael Penix is back up or the draft pick's back up.
03:19There's really not a route where he's the first string guy next year.
03:23I get what you're saying, but it's clear that that's their plan for him.
03:31Like, and it wouldn't be out of the world that a guy was – didn't see any – and he's
03:36actually seen it, but didn't see any play in action in one year, and then the next year
03:39is coming in and competing for a better spot on the roster.
03:43I mean, I'm not saying I love it, but that is clearly what they're doing, and that is
03:50clearly what they're thinking, in my mind.
03:54And I don't – I'm not saying I agree with him, I'm just saying I don't know how it
03:58could play out any other way than that, in my mind right now, with the way they're
04:01treating it.
04:04And Tanner McKee – Dylan's right, he was a 23, 6th round draft pick, which to me,
04:09if you're drafting a quarterback in the 6th round and he's undrafted, there's not a
04:12big difference.
04:15Don't have to go any further.
04:17TBD.
04:17Clearly, we're on two different pages.
04:18I mean, it's – I guess it's just TBD with Jack Strand at this point.
04:23I'm going to keep using the word clearly, because Bo keeps using the word clearly, and
04:26there's nothing clear about this entire conversation.
04:29You keep asking me something.
04:30And I keep giving you an answer of the only way I can see it playing out, the
04:34only way it makes sense to me, and you – it feels like you don't like it, so
04:38you're just like, well, I'm going to ask you again.
04:40And I'm confused.
04:41I'm asking you, what's the roadmap for Jack Strand being a starting quarterback?
04:44How does that happen?
04:45I thought I just laid out what I thought it was.
04:48What is it?
04:51Don't look at Dylan.
04:52Look at me.
04:52What is it?
04:53Was I not –
04:53What's the route?
04:54Was I not clear that he stays on the roster this year and develops, and then they
04:58hope in a year or maybe two that he basically competes for something?
05:03I thought I said that.
05:04But my point is that if that's what you – if you think that highly of him, that you
05:11think this guy can really be something for us in a year or two, then why is he your fourth
05:15stringer right now?
05:17Because, again, I think that they're trying to see what Michael Penning says, and he's
05:21clearly not ready to be thrown to the wolves and just destroyed.
05:24He wasn't ready to be played.
05:25I'm not saying he needs to be your starter.
05:26I said, why is he your fourth stringer?
05:29Because he's not ready?
05:31Exactly.
05:32But that's the whole point of having him here and that what they want him here for is develop.
05:37And I know he can do it for the practice squad.
05:38How can you develop a fourth stringer?
05:40Hold on.
05:41Let's think about it this way for a second.
05:42Let's think about who is in front of Michael Penning Jr.
05:47I mean, in front of Jack Strand right now.
05:49Michael Penning, obviously, we're hoping he's a starter, right?
05:51So let's put him there.
05:51And let's talk about Jack Strand as a potential backup.
05:54Let's not even think starter right now.
05:55Let's think backup.
05:57Tua, probably not going to be here for the long run if Michael Penning Jr. plays out
06:01the way we think, hopefully, he's going to play out.
06:02I agree with that.
06:03So that gets Tua out of the room.
06:04Okay.
06:05Andy Dalton, not a long-term solution.
06:07Probably just going to be here for the rest of the year.
06:09He's gone.
06:09So that moves Jack Strand right up to potentially backup unless things get shaky and Michael
06:16Penning Jr. isn't that guy.
06:17Then maybe you're drafting a guy.
06:19And that still could have Jack Strand in the realm of possibly being a backup if you're
06:24ready to move on from Michael Penning Jr.
06:26The problem with it, and I agree with what you're saying, that's the road map.
06:30But I'm looking at Tua and Andy Dalton as being the same guy at this point.
06:34And I think you are, too, because that's what you just said.
06:35Right.
06:36Both those guys just move out of the way and Jack Strand moves up.
06:38Yes.
06:38Then why not give him the reps that Tua and Andy Dalton are getting if that's the way
06:44we think of him?
06:44That's my point through the whole thing.
06:46He's a fourth stringer.
06:48He's not doing anything.
06:50I get it.
06:50We already talked about Cooper Rush getting half the reps when Michael Penning Jr.
06:53Here's the problem.
06:54I understand what you're saying, but it's clearly not changing.
06:59So even having the conversation is essentially the same as taking my head and slamming it up
07:03against that double-paned glass window.
07:05It ain't doing any good.
07:06It's not going to break the window, and the window's not going to – nothing is going
07:12to change if I take my head and bang it against this double-paned glass window.
07:15I don't know why we have this job.
07:17Why are we doing good, bad, and ugly?
07:19It's not going to change their game plan next week.
07:21That's different.
07:21We're actually talking about what went on.
07:23But if we talk – we can talk – nothing made no sense to have him on the roster to
07:29begin
07:29with.
07:31Unless you thought you valued him high enough that you're afraid someone's going to take him,
07:35which is what I've said nine times clearly in this conversation.
07:39But you're not – you don't want to hear my answers.
07:41I don't understand it.
07:43It's not.
07:44Abe has –
07:44I'm not asking you what they're thinking.
07:46I know what they're thinking.
07:47Well, I'm telling you –
07:48I'd like to know what Bo thinks at some point.
07:50I don't – I did.
07:50I told you what I thought.
07:51I don't know why, other than this is their plan.
07:53That's the answer.
07:55But that's their – that's clearly their plan.
07:58Because if not, why is he here?
08:00Why – I mean, I said that –
08:03Sir, go back to the original question.
08:04Why is he here?
08:05Did I not say that?
08:07Like, I – did I not – was I not clear?
08:09Or did he just want to argue with me?
08:11I felt like he just wanted to argue with me.
08:13I'm not – I think you explained it.
08:15I'm not sure what you were missing on it.
08:18I think that what you got – what we're missing in this is you signed Andy Dalton to be your
08:23third stringer.
08:24Why?
08:26Why did we just sign Andy Dalton to be our third string quarterback?
08:30Because we're not just released Cooper Rush and be done with it.
08:32Why not just release Cooper Rush and Andy Dalton doesn't have to come in?
08:35And it's like, oh, well, because Jack Strand is not ready.
08:38Then why is he on the roster?
08:40He's a fourth stringer.
08:42I mean, I've told you why.
08:43I know what you think.
08:44I'm not saying that you haven't played it.
08:46That's got to be the only way.
08:47I'm asking questions of the Falcons right now, not of Bo Morgan.
08:50But I'm telling you, I think it's pretty obvious how they feel.
08:53Well, I've never seen an NFL team do that unless that is what they were thinking.
08:59Okay, you're saying it's obvious they think they can develop him into something.
09:01No, I'm saying it's obvious that they want him here, they like something in him, and they're
09:05afraid of losing him to put him on the practice squad.
09:07I don't know how else anyone can – especially you can see it any other way.
09:11Again, we're on two different pages because that's not the question.
09:14If they like him enough to think he can develop into a backup or he can be a part of
09:18what you're
09:19doing moving forward, then why is he fourth string?
09:21Why is he fourth string?
09:22That's the question.
