⚔️ What happens when your commander dies, your generals are killed, and you are stranded deep inside enemy territory?

In 401 BCE, Greek mercenaries serving Cyrus the Younger marched into the Persian Empire to support his attempt to seize the throne from his brother, Artaxerxes II. At the Battle of Cunaxa, Cyrus was killed. The Greeks had achieved success in their own part of the battle, but their expedition had failed.

Their senior commanders were later captured and killed during negotiations. Xenophon became one of the new leaders, helping organize the retreat through hostile territories and harsh mountain regions.

The surviving Greek force eventually reached the Black Sea, where Xenophon records their unforgettable cry: “The sea! The sea!” Yet the journey was not quite over.

This cinematic 3D CGI reconstruction brings to life one of antiquity’s most remarkable survival stories, based on Xenophon’s Anabasis and later historical scholarship.
