00:01Brown segment brought to you by Surfside. Celebrate football with Surfside. It's not a seltzer. No, it's Surfside.
00:07You've got to be 21. Please drink responsibly. Proud partner of the Cleveland Browns.
00:12I told you Liz had a Surfside. Proud partner of the Cleveland Browns.
00:16You will be a proud partner.
00:20If you do it right.
00:21You've got to be responsible.
00:23Of course.
00:24You've got to be responsible.
00:26I love responsibility.
00:27Unpaid testimonial. Liz loves it.
00:28The Surfside.
00:31All right. So what do you want to ask everybody?
00:32Is this true?
00:33You know what?
00:34I thought I heard Nick and Jonathan mention something like this yesterday as I was driving
00:38a football practice.
00:40Second to last football practice ever, Tone.
00:42I know.
00:43Very emotional.
00:45My whistle gets hung because I don't really use a whistle on game day.
00:47There's no reason to.
00:48But whistle gets hung up after tonight.
00:54I think you're going to be blubbering like...
00:56Not tonight. Saturday.
00:57Yeah, it's going to be Saturday.
00:59Oh, God.
00:59It's going to be bad.
01:01I'm going to occupy myself with things to do on Saturday evening after that game.
01:07So you want to ask what?
01:08Are people...
01:10What did you just say in that clip?
01:13Because I thought I heard Nick and Jonathan asking about this.
01:15People were not really worked up about 4-2.
01:19I'm like, 4-10?
01:20Well, okay.
01:20So our boss will say it's just because people don't believe.
01:22Okay.
01:23That's one thing.
01:23There's a lot of things I don't believe in that I cheer for.
01:25Wait a minute.
01:26I didn't necessarily believe in the Guardians making the run that they did.
01:30But I cheered my butt off for them.
01:32I found that clip in June where I said they were an ALCS team.
01:34I was like, oh, hey!
01:35Finally got something right.
01:36Well, you can probably find a clip of me in September saying his team has no chance.
01:39So I think it just depends on these things.
01:42But that doesn't stop me from getting excited.
01:44Like I told you, they won again.
01:46And my wife, for the fourth time this year, is like,
01:49I don't remember you getting this excited about the Browns.
01:52The Joe Flacco run I did because it was at the end of the year.
01:56This one is different because it's early in the year.
01:58It's surprising.
01:59You're seeing other carnage around the league.
02:02Look how bad the quarterback play is around the league.
02:04And we've got a defense that's legit.
02:06So I am fired up.
02:08Do I think they're going to win the Super Bowl?
02:10Do I think even that Deshaun Watson is going to be the quarterback by week 15?
02:14Right now I'd still bet against it.
02:15Our boss sent a very interesting tidbit there.
02:18He said, I think there's a difference between not happy and not buying in.
02:22I agree.
02:24See, that's what I want to know.
02:25Are there actually people who seem to be not happy with 4-2?
02:30I tell you what, I didn't find any of them in the stadium on Sunday.
02:34Everybody seemed to be leaving happy.
02:36Not buying in, that's different.
02:39Because if you're saying not buying in, like I'm a pretty positive person, okay?
02:44But damn, man, like, some of the conversation.
02:48I have to disagree with Mary Kay Cabot, and I will tomorrow at 820 when she joins us.
02:53Khalil Mack is 35 years old.
02:54I think you trade for Khalil Mack if you're an odds-on favorite to win the Super Bowl.
02:57Much like the Rams did at the beginning of the season.
03:00Obviously, things have changed.
03:02Like the Rams did during the offseason, I should say, about Miles Garrett.
03:06I think that's, you trade for Khalil Mack at the trade deadline because you're like, we've got to look at
03:12it.
03:12I don't know if you have a look at it here.
03:14I think you have a look at it as a competitive football team.
03:17That's what I think you have.
03:18And I think that's a great step forward, man.
03:20Like, I'm, the only thing I'm cautious about is trying to skip steps.
03:25You have a really good young football team.
03:28You can build with success.
03:30Like, do not get caught up in it.
03:34Do not try to find cheat codes.
03:37Do not do that.
03:39Like, Owen's got to be so annoyed.
03:42I'm going to bring it up again.
03:43Like, the Chiefs were a playoff team while Patrick Mahomes was a rookie on the bench.
03:49They had the building blocks of success.
03:52They had, it was a team that had good bones.
03:55And then Patrick Mahomes is obviously a legend already.
03:58No disrespect to him.
03:59But he takes it to a different level.
04:02That's, I, if we end up being a great place where you can drop somebody into fine, I'm just not
04:09interested in like, well, I'd be willing to give up this, that, and the other.
04:12Why?
04:12Because Khalil Mack's a big name and a Hall of Famer.
04:14Like, yeah, he'll be a Hall of Famer.
04:15I got 11 guys who have sacks on my defense.
04:18Do I need Khalil Mack right now?
04:22Jonathan Taylor, great name.
04:24Jonathan Taylor, really like Jonathan Taylor.
04:26I know his, I know his numbers aren't that high this year or great this year.
04:30He is 27.
04:31And I know that's a name that a guy like Andrew Barry or an age that a guy like Andrew
04:36Barry would go, 27.
04:41That's usually the age.
04:42But, okay, that just lowers the price.
04:44I'm open to Jonathan Taylor, certainly.
04:47But is Jonathan Taylor going to be 28, still in his prime while this team maybe takes off?
04:52Maybe.
04:53But I got to get my quarterback situation figured out.
04:55And maybe that's where some people aren't buying in.
04:57Because what can I say about the quarterback?
05:00Does anybody think that you have a long-term future with him?
05:04No.
05:05Does anybody think that he needs to be absolutely benched?
05:07Well, yeah, you'll find people on the internet.
05:09But in sincerity, does anybody think he needs to be benched?
05:12You're 4-2.
05:13He didn't turn the ball over on Sunday.
05:16He's not the golden god of football.
05:19He's not what he was years ago.
05:21No, not even close.
05:22And I'm not asking him to be.
05:24He has not played to the point where we need to go, we got to make a change here.
05:28No.
05:28If he would have turned the ball over a bunch on Sunday and they would have lost, then maybe we're
05:32starting to have that conversation.
05:33It is still very much week to week.
05:36So I can understand that.
05:37I said there are a bunch of quarterbacks in this league where if they were quarterbacking the Browns these first
05:43six weeks, one and five, there are definitely more than a handful.
05:48I'd say it would be 0 and 6.
05:49Because other quarterbacks would try to push the ball.
05:53And maybe there'd be more touchdowns, but there'd definitely be more interceptions.
05:57I just think there would be.
05:592-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
06:01I agree with you.
06:03Let me get to Eddie and Westlake.
06:04Eddie, you're next up on The Fan.
06:06Hello.
06:07Hey, man.
06:07Hey, I just picked up, man.
06:09And listen, you said something about don't, you know, don't rush this.
06:17I mean, that sounds ridiculous, man.
06:18Listen, Khalil Mack is 35 years old.
06:21I don't care if he's 45 or 55.
06:24He really is the best.
06:25You're giving up a second-round pick for Khalil Mack right now?
06:29I'm not giving up no second-round pick.
06:30It's not going to cost a second-round pick.
06:30Well, that, okay, but you didn't hear earlier in the show when we went around the room and
06:34said it was going to cost a second- or a third-round pick.
06:37No, the last trade didn't cost that.
06:39Why would it cost more now?
06:40I don't know, man.
06:41I went around the room and asked.
06:42That's what they gave the answer for, Eddie.
06:44Okay?
06:44No.
06:45So, I mean, you want to sit here and talk about a guy who's a great pass rusher.
06:47He's a big name and everything like that.
06:49I got good pass rushers on this team.
06:50Again, I got 11 guys who have sacks on this defense right now.
06:53Yeah, I understand that.
06:54But you can never have too many pass rushers.
06:57I have a lot of pass rushers.
06:59I have 11 guys who have sacks on this football team right now.
07:01I have a lot of pass rushers.
07:03You're basically content with where we are right now.
07:05No, I'm not content.
07:06But I'm telling you right now.
07:07No, no, no, no.
07:07Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie.
07:09See, this is what I'm saying.
07:10See, you got to understand this, is that I got a great young nucleus right now.
07:14I'm very excited about that.
07:16I need my second- and third-round picks next year.
07:18I need guys that I have a coaching staff that can develop those guys.
07:21Do I need guys turning 35, 36 who can retire at any time taking up any of those picks?
07:25No, I don't.
07:27But, Ken, I wouldn't trade a second- or third-round pick.
07:30I'm in agreement with that.
07:31Then you're probably not going to get the trade done, Eddie.
07:34And they always settle for less.
07:35Then you're probably not going to get the trade done.
07:38Go ahead.
07:39I doubt it.
07:39I doubt if you're going to have to give up a third-round pick.
07:41Well, then we can always just say we doubt things.
07:43Move on.
07:45But, look, a third-round is that compensatory pick.
07:48So, if I got to give a third-round pick, the Browns are going to get to the point where
07:53they're the youngest team in the league.
07:54So, I'm not giving up a second-round pick.
07:56But if you're talking about a third-round pick, eventually, these young kids, they're going to not have a place
08:02either.
08:02You know, with the youngest team in the league, we've got young kids starting everywhere.
08:06So, if you've got a chance to get a player that's going to help you, I mean, I don't know,
08:11man.
08:11The third-round pick, that's a question.
08:15Listen, I mean, everybody's got a price.
08:17But, I mean, again, the teams that are at that time that are willing to give up second-round picks
08:21for a 35-year-old pass rusher
08:23are teams that know they have a look at it right now.
08:25I don't – do you see us winning a Super Bowl with Deshaun Watson?
08:29I don't see us winning a Super Bowl.
08:32Okay.
08:33It's just a better situation than what we are right now.
08:37I'm only trading for – but, you see, that's where –
08:40Okay, you've said that already, Eddie.
08:42Thank you for the call.
08:43This is where we reach an impasse.
08:45I'm only trading for Khalil Mack if I think I have a look at the Super Bowl.
08:48If I don't have a look at the Super Bowl, then I'm not trading for Khalil Mack.
08:52Anybody disagree in the room?
08:55No.
08:55I mean, it's – like at 35 –
08:59You don't got to explain it.
09:00Just say you agree or disagree and we move on.
09:02Unless it's like a fifth- or sixth-round pick.
09:04But you're not – yeah, that's a throwaway, man.
09:06Yeah, obviously, but who's –
09:08That's probably not happening.
09:09It's the trade deadline.
09:10Like, who's trading for Khalil Mack?
09:11The 49ers, maybe?
09:13And, again, I don't know their roster right off the top of my head, like, thinking about it.
09:15Like, you're looking at – you're looking at undefeated teams, one-loss teams.
09:20That's what you're looking at.
09:21Yeah, I think of, like, that Von Miller trade that happened a couple years ago.
09:24Like, those type of guys are the –
09:26Yes.
09:27That's what we're saying.
09:29So, you could say, well, you can never have too many pass rushes.
09:31You can never have too many pass rushes.
09:32You never have to – I know that.
09:34But you still have 11 guys that have sacks this year.
09:36And none of them are named Jared Verse, by the way.
09:40I'm sure Jared Verse will start to get some sacks here eventually.
09:42It's been a while, but I'm sure he's going to get some sacks here eventually.
09:45And even though you could try to rip on Jared Verse, I still got 11 guys.
09:49I don't think that's the helper to your cause that you are making it out to be.
09:52What do you mean?
09:53That, well, we've got 11 guys with sacks.
09:55We don't, you know –
09:56I got a good defense.
09:57Why do I need to trade any significant asset?
09:59I wouldn't call them – okay, we'll call them good.
10:02We'll call them good.
10:03They're good.
10:03That's fine.
10:04They're not enough right now to do anything of substance with just them.
10:10You need more help on offense than you do on defense.
10:13That would be the only reason that I wouldn't make the trade.
10:15Okay.
10:15Because going forward, is this defense going to be this good next year
10:19and three years from now?
10:20Probably, right, with the age of the players that are making impacts.
10:26But you still need so much help on offense that giving away any pick
10:31for Khalil Mack would, you know, probably hamper you more than help you.
10:35Browns are 4-2.
10:36Are you holding back on buying in on the Browns?
10:39Is that the question you'd like to ask everybody?
10:41Because I don't want to ask anybody who's actively rooting against them.
10:43And that's a weird, nasty alley I don't want to be in.
10:46Well, it just brings us back to people just don't like Watson
10:48and think we're going to sign him to some mega contract if he –
10:51And after beating the Ravens on Sunday,
10:54and I know he didn't do too terribly much, but he didn't do anything bad.
10:57So if he didn't do any of those bad things,
10:59and they didn't do too terribly much, but they still won the football game,
11:02I'm not going to sit there and entertain all the Watson hate.
11:05If he would have tried to force passes to everybody who people thought were open
11:09who weren't, and Moose Johnson tried to tell you during that broadcast,
11:12then you know what? You would have lost that game.
11:14You'd be sitting here at 3-3, and we would be having those discussions.
11:16Film gurus say it too.
11:17They said it was a rough, rough first half for Munkin's offense.
11:21Very predictable. Receivers couldn't get open.
11:23Too many guys to worry about in pass coverage.
11:26I'm not blaming Deshaun Watson on that.
11:282-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
11:30You buying in?
11:31Or why not?
11:32Start to the 5th for Clomac.
11:34See, I wish Eddie and Westlake were saying that.
11:35I was like, well, I'll give up a 5th for Clomac.
11:38But at the same time –
11:39But everybody would, which means it's not a 5th.
11:41Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
11:42What team wouldn't give up a 5th?
11:44It's not a 5th.
11:44Hey, you just said that's where it starts, all right?
11:46Don't start bitching at me about it, okay?
11:48Lord.
11:50All right, I'm sorry.
11:51I'm a little sensitive.
11:52I take that back.
11:52It's going to really be starts at a 3rd.
11:56What was Austin Barber?
11:58Was he a 5th?
11:59He was a lineman.
12:01A beefcake.
12:01No, he wasn't a 5th.
12:02I'm thinking of Parker Brailsford.
12:042-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
12:07All right, you're buying in or you're not buying in?
12:11I want to know.
12:13Well, I do think that what they are attempting to do is more sustainable than I would have said four
12:21weeks ago.
12:21Don't you think, Kenny?
12:23The whole good defense, don't turn the ball over, and just need a few key plays in the fourth quarter?
12:30That is sustainable against probably most teams that aren't San Francisco, Buffalo, like when Kenny's having two different conversations.
12:40I'm sorry.
12:40I just, I got to get it out for everybody or I'm not.
12:43You're the only everybody.
12:44It's an itch I have to scratch.
12:45I'm sorry.
12:45So, them being able to play the defense that they're playing, playing relatively clean.
12:50I know there were a lot of turnover-worthy plays in the first, like, three weeks.
12:54He's definitely trimmed those down.
12:56And, now, a lot of it's because he's not taking many chances.
13:00All right, well, you're going to eventually have to take chances.
13:02I think we all understand that.
13:03Well, there's going to be situations where you're going to have to.
13:05But, what I'm saying is, they are not making the back-breaking mistakes.
13:11They really are trusting their defense.
13:13A lot of coaches say they trust their defense, and then they do reckless things on offense.
13:17It's like, well, you don't trust your defense.
13:18Why would you go for it on that fourth down?
13:20Why would you do this?
13:21Because Stefanski always went for it on fourth down.
13:24And, you guys all loved it.
13:25Not, you know, in the studio.
13:26I know.
13:27Fans love coaches that go for fourth down.
13:29And, then, when they don't get it, then you're irate.
13:32And, it's like, well, then you really weren't trusting your defense.
13:34You're trusting your offense, which you had no business trusting in the first place.
13:37Well, you know, again, we've got to define what's bought in.
13:39Are you excited?
13:41Do you think that they can make the playoffs?
13:42I think they can.
13:43I think they clearly can make the playoffs.
13:46And, right now, I would probably put money that they would.
13:49So, then you're bought in.
13:51But, buying in is like, okay, we're trading for Khalil Mack now.
13:54And, you're right.
13:55Like, okay, if it starts at a fifth rounder, no one's just going to go with a fifth rounder.
13:58Teams that really need to compete for the Super Bowl are going to give more than a fifth rounder up.
14:02Well, I'm sorry.
14:03Too rich for my blood at 35 years old.
14:06Third rounder would be a cutoff?
14:07Exactly, yes.
14:08So, I think that that becomes the issue here.
14:12How much am I willing to give up to add names to my football team that I think I can
14:17compete with right now?
14:19I just don't think we're there.
14:21But, I think we just, when we say bought in, I'm like, yeah, look at some of these young players
14:25you have.
14:26Look at some of these guys.
14:27Again, Austin, third rounder, Austin Barber.
14:29I think he's playing his ass off there.
14:31And, not just Spencer Fano.
14:33First rounder, Spencer Fano.
14:34I think doing a fine job.
14:35You get Mason Graham back.
14:37We were just seeing him blossom.
14:38And, you always need to have guys a little bit older.
14:41I remember I was watching Tommy Togiai on Sunday morning over there in the Houston Texans game.
14:46And, I go, yeah, it takes defensive tackles.
14:49They need some seasoning.
14:50They need a little bit of time.
14:51Mason is a fifth overall.
14:53So, he probably needs a little less time than what a Tommy Togiai did in the fourth round.
14:57But, Tommy Togiai has gone on to a decent NFL career.
15:02Jordan Elliott would have went on to a decent NFL career.
15:05And, then he got kicked off the team.
15:06And, then we found out from that Ari Meieroff why.
15:10And, that was a, oh, boy.
15:12Sometimes defensive tackles need a little bit more season.
15:15But, I'm seeing some good things out of these guys.
15:18And, I'm like, man, I don't want to go.
15:20I'm believing in Andrew Barry again.
15:23It's hard to get past the Deshaun Watson stuff and some of the other things.
15:26I get that.
15:27But, you're starting to, like, are people starting to trust Andrew again with some of these young guys?
15:32I think they are.
15:32I got a young football team that's 4-2.
15:34They're beating teams they're supposed to beat.
15:35Well, they beat, they lost to a team they were supposed to beat.
15:38And, then they beat a team they weren't supposed to beat.
15:39We'll find out on Sunday whether or not they're actually beating teams they're supposed to beat.
15:42This is the first game they've been favored?
15:44Yeah, I should take that back.
15:45Are they favored?
15:47I think it's the first game.
15:48It's the first game.
15:48Took six games and a 4-2 record to be favored.
15:51Yeah, so they have beaten teams that were either on a close-to-level playing field with them or they
15:56were supposed to lose to.
15:57So, it's got to count for something.
15:59And, they probably still, they're going to need to win more to get another being favored in a game again.
16:04This is more about their opponent than them, than people respecting their 4-2 record.
16:09I want to see whether or not people are bought in and what they define as bought in.
16:13And, coming up at 9-20, don't go blaming us.
16:15We can only react to what somebody else said.
