00:00and the rural situation in Latin America continues to evolve and in Brazil just
00:04a few days before the presidential runoff access to land remains at the
00:09center of the political and social debate our correspondent Belen de los
00:13Santos and is there is in Brazil and has more information on this matter
00:17welcome Bell and I wanted to ask you precisely in this context how social
00:22medias are mobilizing the opinion the public opinion and also defending the
00:27people's needs and rights
00:29how are you exactly well we are here for the last stretch of the campaign it's
00:36just a couple of days until October 25th everything matters and of course the
00:41campaigns are at their highest point with mobilizations on the streets also on
00:48social media as we were just saying and let me touch a little bit on this useful
00:53topic that you're just introducing the matter of access to land you know that
00:58Brazil is the home to Latin America's largest social movement and that is the
01:04landless movement of rural workers the MST of Brazil it is not only the largest
01:10social movement but also has built bridges across the region with other social
01:18political parties in terms of strengthening the workers capacity particularly rural
01:25workers but then it extended to the entire working capacity of building bridges and
01:31building on collective rights the MST is one of the most important forces in terms of the
01:39grassroots bases here in Brazil and they've been an important part of the campaign in this case
01:47for Lula da Silva and his project to re-elect for a first mandate they have been working
01:54together particularly in the past years in terms of mobilizing the agenda their first struggle has
02:02always been surrounding one issue that has to do with access to land with the agrarian reform
02:09you know that the agrarian reform for any country particularly in the Gulf of South and Latin America is at
02:16the
02:16root of many of the structural issues that really make up all of our society for example Cuba has been
02:25pioneered in terms of implementing the agrarian reform that then gave way to the structural of a completely new society
02:35while the MST who has also worked very closely with Cuba in this regard has always been one to continue
02:43fighting for that access with these settlements for example gaining land for those who work on it and build from
02:51there and in
02:53in comradeship with the government of Lula da Silva with the big party they have been working together to
03:00keep that access to land again land for the rural workers for those who work on the land that is
03:08the key slogan in this
03:09election they are being part of that important base looking for that re-election why because on the other side
03:17is the
03:17re-actual agri-business when we talk about access to land it's not just about having a field to work
03:24on it is also
03:25about an entire different production model that has to do with a production model that prioritizes the rural workers
03:33the people is an access to food that is also healthy and sustainable in terms of their damage to the
03:40environment so all of these
03:42things together is at the root of this model of prioritizing the human being the worker themselves with all the
03:49needs in terms of
03:50producing and also fulfilling those needs and that is what the social pandemic stands for one important base and that
04:00is why
04:01what we were saying right now right the production of food and the access to land is one of the
04:08keys to understand this debate agribusiness will always
04:11um put the focus on profit of course on the usage of land that has no regards for the workers
04:18or for people who live nearby but for the
04:22just production of commodities that can be sold overseas at the highest price the debate is how to impose and
04:30promote a model that focuses on
04:33sustainability on environmental awareness on the people having a place to live to work and to produce as well
04:41and that is what is being debated as well
04:45thank you very much bell we will keep in contact with you throughout the day and the upcoming days as
04:50well for more
