00:00as the Browns getting ready to take on the Tennessee Titans.
00:03Jeff Phelps, Andy Baskin, Dan Mennegan, behind the glass
00:06and taking your phone calls at 216-474-0092 is Matt Corrali,
00:12pride of North Canton, Ohio.
00:15So here's the deal, Andy.
00:16Tell me the deal, Jeff.
00:18You have Deshaun Watson, whose team is 4-2,
00:21this weekend going up against a guy who was the number one overall pick in the draft
00:27two years ago.
00:28And it was the draft where everybody kind of looked at guys and thought,
00:32well, is this the guy?
00:33Could this be?
00:34It was the Shadour Dillon-Gabriel draft.
00:38Right.
00:39And everybody's wondering, who's the best guy here?
00:42Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:44And I'll admit, I liked Cam Ward coming out.
00:48I still like Cam Ward.
00:51But in Tennessee right now, Cam Ward is leading a 1-5 team
00:54that obviously has some issues.
00:56And to be completely fair, he's not doing a whole heck of a lot to help him out.
01:01He's not been great so far.
01:04Doesn't mean he can't get great.
01:06And maybe he will still get great.
01:09But right now he's been, eh.
01:12You know, there's Mitch Strabisky's the backup quarterback there.
01:16I saw somebody speculate, you know what, you're going to sit Cam Ward for a while
01:20and let him learn the game as Mitch plays quarterback.
01:24Mitch has actually a decent one-loss record as a starting quarterback.
01:29He did okay in Chicago.
01:30People seem to forget that.
01:32And they're going to give Cam Ward a chance to sit back and learn a little bit.
01:35I don't know about that.
01:37That's interesting.
01:39But think about Deshaun Watson.
01:42Think about Cam Ward.
01:44Right.
01:45And what's going on with Cam right now in Tennessee.
01:48Think about where the Browns are.
01:51Okay.
01:52And that leads us to this.
01:54Baskin and Phelps present.
01:58Your 2027 Cleveland Browns Franchise Quarterback Update.
02:03Oh!
02:04Ah, here we go.
02:05Boy, has life changed, Andy.
02:07This marching band doesn't sound as peppy as they used to.
02:10Life, well, you know why?
02:11Because there's no reason to be.
02:13There's not a real reason to be because are you going to get your quarterback in the 2027 draft?
02:20All of a sudden, that's changed a little bit.
02:23But let's take a look at some of the guys that have been, you know, the top guys here.
02:27And we'll quickly go through this and then have the discussion.
02:31Okay.
02:32Arch Manning.
02:33Still my favorite guy.
02:36Lost his second straight game this week.
02:38They lost to Florida.
02:40In that game, this is two straight games they've lost 27-24.
02:44It was to Oklahoma and now to Florida.
02:46Arch was 14 of 20, 173, a touchdown, no interceptions, and he was sacked five times.
02:52And people are saying, well, he's not what he's supposed to be.
02:55And Steve Sarkeesian, you're screwing this kid up and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
03:00Regardless, Arch is now the quarterback of a team that's lost two in a row.
03:03On top of the fact that this was against a Florida team that has one of the worst secondaries in
03:07college football,
03:09Florida was a get-right game for Trinidad Chambliss.
03:11Florida was a get-right game for the quarterback from Mizzou, Simmons.
03:15And Lenora Sellers.
03:16And Lenora Sellers.
03:17Florida was a get-right game for, and Arch couldn't get right against that Florida secondary.
03:21And we now suddenly know the name K.C. Lacey.
03:25I mean, that's funny.
03:26K.J. Lacey, sorry.
03:27I was going to say, didn't you date K.C. Lacey?
03:30No, not that I know of him.
03:32I thought you did.
03:32I'm sure probably K.C. Lacey dated one of my friends.
03:35That feels like one of the, like, never mind.
03:38I can't make that joke on the air.
03:39That'll be an after-dark joke.
03:41Anyway, K.J. Lacey is the backup.
03:43Dante Moore at Oregon.
03:45Yeah, that's right.
03:46Dante Moore at Oregon still hasn't played since September 26th.
03:52But he has eligibility left.
03:54So does Arch Manning.
03:56My guy, Lenora Sellers, didn't have a game this week.
03:59He's still basking in the glow of his win over Florida.
04:03He has eligibility left.
04:05Darian Mensah at Miami.
04:08Two-overtime win over Florida State University.
04:12Miami won that game 43-35.
04:14He was pretty good in the game.
04:15Threw for 326, three touchdowns and interception.
04:18Darian Mensah has eligibility.
04:20Malachi Tony is the engine that makes that offense go, though.
04:23And my word, did Malachi Tony have himself a game in that one.
04:26On top of the fact that with Mensah, no trait out of Darian Mensah jumps off the page.
04:33But the guy can play.
04:35Except smart guy who can actually play the position.
04:37You'll never watch Darian Mensah go, that's the fastest guy on the field.
04:40That's the guy with the strongest armor.
04:42That's the most accurate.
04:43But you'll watch him and you'll go, that's a quarterback for the next level.
04:46That dude can sling it.
04:47But this was their first borderline real test as well.
04:50So I wonder what Mensah looks like now that he's seen competition that's above average.
04:55And it took them double overtime to get the win, but they got the win.
04:58Florida State leaves a little to desire.
04:59But that was the real one.
05:01Dano's good buddy, Drew Mestemaker at Oklahoma State.
05:03That's your buddy.
05:05Lost 35-32 to No. 20 Houston.
05:08But he was good again.
05:09He is now throwing for 300-plus yards in five straight games.
05:12It was 365 this week.
05:1415 touchdowns, four interceptions in those five games.
05:18He's a 6'3 sophomore, Andy, with more eligibility.
05:23Dane Burgler called him quarterback one in this class.
05:26Guess what?
05:27He has more eligibility.
05:29I'm shocked you're not sitting here pounding the table wanting to have Drew Mestemaker come over to the house
05:34and have a nice dinner so that you can talk him into coming out the draft.
05:37I'm not ready to pound the table for any of these guys yet.
05:39I have two favorites, and you know who they are.
05:42Arch Manning and Lenora Sellers.
05:44You should watch some Oklahoma State because it's going to remind you.
05:47I have watched some Oklahoma State.
05:49It's going to remind you of an old friend of yours.
05:51Which one?
05:52The one that's playing quarterback for the Buffalo Bills.
05:54I have watched Drew Mestemaker.
05:57I like him.
05:58I'm not ready to pound the table yet.
06:00Okay.
06:01It's interesting that the kid went from, like, nothing, the North Texas, to Oklahoma State,
06:07and has just gone from walk-on to first-round possibility.
06:11But, key words, more eligibility left.
06:15Not what we can say for Trinidad Chambliss, who might be six foot on a good day and good shoes.
06:20But they won big over Missouri.
06:24So, good for him.
06:25Congratulations there.
06:26Sling it.
06:2731-3, 241 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions.
06:31No eligibility left.
06:33I know he's short, but he can sling it, guys.
06:36I know.
06:37He can read defenses.
06:38He can manipulate them.
06:39He can move.
06:40He can sling it.
06:41CJ Carr at Notre Dame lost to BYU, number eight, BYU.
06:46It was 28-24.
06:47He was pretty good.
06:49Not great.
06:50Threw 49 times, completed only 27, 261.
06:53No touchdowns, no interceptions.
06:55CJ Carr at Notre Dame has one year of eligibility left.
07:00Julian's saying hurts his arm.
07:02He's done for the year, probably.
07:06He has eligibility left.
07:08Andy, there's no way that kid comes out now, is there?
07:10No way.
07:11Nope.
07:11Nope.
07:12So, he has eligibility left.
07:14Ryan Day, congratulations.
07:16Though you lose him this year, you get him next year because he has eligibility left.
07:21And with his arm injury.
07:22It's going to be a rough run for the rest of the year for the Bucs.
07:25But he'd become the next Quinn Ewers, wouldn't he?
07:28Hey, Buckeye quarterback, you think he's coming out?
07:30Texas quarterback, he's coming out.
07:32And he ends up being a fifth or sixth-round pick.
07:35If Julian Sand came out after this arm injury, not playing most of this year, he's going to drop way
07:41down the draft.
07:41Especially because the last couple weeks, he just didn't look, the last two weeks in particular, I didn't think he
07:45looked anywhere near his capabilities.
07:48And again, every time he throws a ball downfield, it feels like he underthrows.
07:53But Ohio State's in trouble.
07:56I think we even quit talking about him now because I can't imagine.
08:00I don't think Julian's coming back based on everything that I read.
08:02Not coming back to Ohio State?
08:04No, not coming back this season.
08:05Not coming back this season.
08:06He's out for the year.
08:07The only thing I saw was possibly coming back late for the playoffs.
08:12Like if they get to the championship game or something like that.
08:14If they get there, that means that Fahy did a pretty good job.
08:17Or Tavion St. Clair suddenly turned things around here and they decided they wanted to use him.
08:22I just, man, Ohio State, if his foot's in bounds, I don't even know if Ohio State's going to make
08:28the playoffs.
08:29Yeah, it's tough.
08:30Because Indiana would be a win and then you'd have, and Texas doesn't look any better every week.
08:34They seem to be going backwards.
08:36And then you have some tough games coming up here.
08:39Do they have the players to do this?
08:42Yes, but they're going to have to have some kind of miracle over this two weeks to get Fahy, if
08:47Fahy's going to be the guy, to get him ready.
08:50He did not look ready.
08:51Ryan Day said after the game against Indiana that he thought, you know, it just needed to get into the
08:56groove.
08:57Man, I don't know.
08:58That game looked like it was going 500 miles an hour and his car was stuck in neutral.
09:03Austin Simmons.
09:04It's a fun, sloppy college football season.
09:05This is a good time.
09:06Yeah, it's all over.
09:07It's turned into a fun, sloppy college season.
09:09Austin Simmons is the former Mississippi quarterback who transferred to Missouri.
09:13He had his big showdown game with Trinidad Chambliss, who took his job last year, and he lost it 31
09:19-3.
09:20He threw it for 339.
09:22He did not look good.
09:24No, and guess what?
09:25He has more eligibility left.
09:29Jaden Maiava at USC does not have eligibility left.
09:34He's 6'4", 230.
09:35He didn't play.
09:36We're mentioning him now.
09:38Why?
09:38Because he has no eligibility left.
09:41He had a big game against Penn State last time he played, 301 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions.
09:47So, Andy, here's the point.
09:49Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Lenora Sellers, all three of those guys, eligibility left and reasons to go back to school.
09:58Darian Mensah might not have a reason to go back because he has one year left,
10:03but who knows?
10:05Drew Mestemaker, eligibility.
10:07CJ Carr, eligibility.
10:09Austin Simmons, eligibility.
10:12Julian Sagan, same thing.
10:14What does this mean for the Browns?
10:16Time for Taylor.
10:18That's what it means.
10:18Well, maybe.
10:19It means the only...
10:20You like my little slogan there?
10:22The only two guys...
10:23Time for Taylor.
10:24Time for Taylor.
10:26I know he's banged up right now, but...
10:28NFL draft buzz, first five guys that they have in their 2027 rankings are Mensah, Mestemaker, Moore, Sane, and Arch.
10:36Well, they can all go back to school.
10:38All of a sudden, this deep, deep quarterback class, again, looks like, because of issues, mainly more than anything,
10:46these guys might go back to school.
10:48If what I would think is going to happen here, one or two of these guys are going to look
10:55at this class and say,
10:57hey, I'm sorry, I'm going to be a better pro than Trinidad Chambliss, or Jaden Maiava, I'm going to be
11:04better than him,
11:05and say Arch, even off a bad year, says, I'm coming out, and then he goes to the combine and
11:10tests off the charts.
11:11And that guy's going to be the number one, two, three pick in the draft.
11:15But the options out there for the Browns and all the other teams,
11:19and these guys are showing more reasons to go back to school than to come out for the NFL draft,
11:24which might make you think, you're getting another year of Deshaun Watson here or something else.
11:30I'll use Arch as the perfect example.
11:33He could light up the combine, and I don't know if it would change anybody's mind.
11:37The tape for him is what's ugly.
11:39He's missing receivers.
11:40He's not reading the field.
11:41When things break down and he can scramble around and play backyard football, it looks fantastic.
11:45Andy?
11:45He just can't do that.
11:46Tell Dan.
11:47Jeff?
11:47Tell Dan this.
11:48Tell him.
11:49Tall kid.
11:51Athletic kid.
11:51Athletic kid.
11:51Runs like crazy.
11:52Runs like crazy.
11:53Name is Manning.
11:54Name is Manning.
11:56You don't think if he lights it up at the combine, some team's going to say, oh yeah, I got
12:00this.
12:01I don't think he's more than a third rounder right now, do you?
12:04The tape does the talking.
12:05Especially now when guys get fired every three years, the tape does the talking.
12:08I know that, but if you need a quarterback and most all of these guys go back to school.
12:14And you need to sell season tickets for a new stadium.
12:16Maybe not Arch.
12:17Then enjoy, to Andrew Barry and to Todd Munkin, enjoy no longer being employed here in two years.
12:22It's going to be a strategic move on the part of one of these college kids and whoever his agent's
12:28going to be to come out and see if he can be the guy.
12:33Maybe it's Mestamaker.
12:34Remember the name Camario.
12:37That's all I can say.
12:38Yeah, that's down the road.
12:39I know.
12:40But all of a sudden, folks.
12:41The beauty is that you take your two draft picks and you trade one, maybe go back into the next
12:45year,
12:45or you go out and get two guys that are going to help you down the road and then parachute
12:50in your quarterback later.
12:53We're going to talk more football coming up in this show.
12:55Deshaun Watson's press conference at 1140.
12:58Your Guardians, just two wins away from getting to the World Series,
13:04and in our estimation, did not handle the starting pitching well.
13:08What's it mean for the starting pitching next year and beyond?
13:11It's next on Basket of Phelps.
