Before The Conjuring became a billion-dollar horror franchise, there was the Perron family.

In 1971, Roger and Carolyn Perron moved their five daughters into a centuries-old farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island. What followed were years of reports involving strange noises, unexplained smells, moving objects, apparitions, and encounters the family still discusses today.

But the deeper I dug into the case, the more questions I had.

In this episode of Reel Horror: The True Story Behind the Movies, we're exploring the real story behind The Conjuring, including the Perron family's experiences, Ed and Lorraine Warren's involvement, the infamous séance that got the Warrens kicked out of those people house. We will also dive into the historical records surrounding Bathsheba Sherman, the woman Hollywood turned into the film's villain, and another uninvited guest that was wrongly accused.

We'll also look at the claims that don't quite add up, the other alleged entities connected to the property, and why some researchers believe the hauntingly sketchy story that inspired The Conjuring movie may be far more complicated than one evil spirit terrorizing a family. It was allegedly enough to have a starting 5 and a bench.

Why? Because sometimes the most interesting part of a horror story isn't what happened.

It's figuring out who got blamed for it for funsies.

What do you think happened at the Perron farmhouse?
