00:00Jonathan Rindernick, the man the government says is responsible for the Palisades fire,
00:06made an appearance in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday.
00:10This is right ahead of his November 2nd retrial, which the government will have to prove he actually started the
00:19fire.
00:19Now, we caught up with Steve Haney, his attorney, who says that the lighter that he allegedly started the fire
00:27with will be key in this new upcoming trial.
00:31And once again, can you just explain a little bit about this lighter and the testing and why it's so
00:37important?
00:38Well, look, the cause of the fire, according to the government, was set by a lighter, right, with no accelerants
00:43on a hill on January 1st.
00:46And they need to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt.
00:48And they didn't in the first trial.
00:50And I think that is going to be even a bigger challenge based on the new evidence in the second
00:54trial.
