00:00Who is Daryl brought to us by, Kayla?
00:03Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:05All right, Daryl, hello.
00:07Hello, boys.
00:08Analytically speaking, the Cavs signed LeBron and they won last night.
00:13Oh, listen to you.
00:15How about if they would have traded for Jalen Brown?
00:17Listen to you.
00:17Would they have won?
00:18Analytically speaking, they also made that trade.
00:20You, you, you, listen, I thought those jokes were done, Daryl.
00:25Uh, did you not watch last night's game?
00:27Yes, I watched last night's game.
00:29I turned it off after the first half.
00:30Things were great.
00:31I, uh, I, I didn't really get an opportunity to watch any of it.
00:35I was a little busy last night, uh, with everything, uh, that went on yesterday, but I was following
00:41it.
00:41Well, you also had WNCX's 40th anniversary party.
00:44Congratulations to our good friends.
00:46Spats, Paula, Nard, the wonderful Nard.
00:49I love Paula.
00:50Paula, I mean, she's just the best, but I love them all over there.
00:52I don't know.
00:53It's like your children.
00:53You can't pick, but either way, congratulations to our good friends at our sister station.
00:57Uh, WNCX 98.5.
01:01All right, Daryl.
01:02Sorry.
01:02Go right on ahead.
01:03Yeah, I had that too.
01:04So, um, yeah, you know, follow on.
01:07Okay.
01:07They're up 29.
01:09Good.
01:09Good opener for the Cavs, whatever.
01:11And then I get done recording, um, our game preview with Lance Reisland last night, uh,
01:18for our YouTube channel.
01:20And I opened Twitter just to see, okay, maybe the Cavs are up by 40 at this point.
01:24And I look and they're losing.
01:27And I'm like, what the hell happened?
01:29Um, but yeah, but, uh, yeah.
01:32Let them know.
01:32They still blow big leads.
01:35Well, and, and I'll say, Daryl, like that is the NBA in today's day and age, but what
01:39was shocking to me was how quickly they blew the lead in the third quarter, like Philly
01:43ratchet it up, which you knew they would do.
01:45They're a proud team with all these proud veterans.
01:48You got an NBA finals, MVP and Jalen Brown.
01:50Joel Embiid has been an MVP.
01:52We know about LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey could be an MVP down the road.
01:57You knew they were going to step up.
01:58It's what the Cavs didn't do when the 76ers stepped up.
02:02Well, they, this is the problem with the Cavaliers is they never push back.
02:07And, um, that has been the narrative that this team has had hanging over it, um, for
02:14the last, I don't know what, five years or so they don't push back.
02:18And, uh, that's something that they still have not figured out.
02:23And I don't think keeping James Harden fixes that.
02:26I don't know that adding Peyton Watson fixes that like that's, that's a between
02:32the ears thing.
02:33And, um, I don't know how they fixed that, but, um, that was it.
02:40I would have rather they lost the game by two or eight or something like that, where you're
02:45in it, you're just, you're tussling back and forth, whatever.
02:48But just to absolutely feel like they just, you know, threw up the white flag in the second
02:55half.
02:56Well, we won the first half.
02:57So the, our work here is done.
03:01It's, they have the same problem every year and, um, it's up to them to change it.
03:08And we also scapegoat Darius Garland for it as well.
03:13Um, not, not like, listen, you had to do what you had to do.
03:16I'm not ripping the trade.
03:17Uh, but there was just so much like, well, you know, Darius is a fine young player, but
03:22that's the thing.
03:23He's young.
03:23There's a maturity there, this, that, and the other.
03:26And so we make this trade because we're going to get ourselves a veteran.
03:28We'll be better off to play for the future.
03:30And then you go get, you, you, you give up all these leads, you end up getting swept
03:35and then you give up a lead right to begin the season against another veteran team.
03:38So that it's only going to wash for so long.
03:42And so I could like Lyman brought up, like, are we already talking about Kenny Atkinson's
03:45job?
03:46Do we already have to go get, and I made a joke, like, do we have to hire Teddy Atlas
03:49or something as the head coach now?
03:50Like, there's only so many head coaches I can hire and fire.
03:53He brought up Tom Thibodeau.
03:54Okay.
03:54Bring in the butcher.
03:55He'll run them all into the ground, but at least hopefully they might be tough.
03:58Hopefully they might be that.
04:00And yeah, it might be an overreaction to it.
04:02Cause it's one game.
04:03It's the first game, but dammit, it's just more of the same.
04:06And I think that that's one of the bigger issues here is that really nothing has changed
04:10as far as the label here over the last three, four years with this basketball team.
04:15And it has really felt like there has been either close to a malaise or a full-on malaise
04:20ever since that Knicks series, not five months ago.
04:22I'm talking a few years ago.
04:24Oh, absolutely.
04:24When they got kicked in the teeth and gentlemanly swept in the first round of the playoffs,
04:29that was kind of at the time where the Cavaliers were in this rebuild process, like that was
04:35a big thing for them to not have to deal with the play-in tournament or worry about whether
04:40or not they make the play-in tournament.
04:41They legit, you know, got through and, and the, the Knicks just ended up kicking their teeth
04:47in and kick their teeth in last year.
04:50Look, you can't, I just, I'm a firm believer that you can't teach toughness.
04:54You're either tough or you're not.
04:56And that's physically tough, mentally tough, all those things.
04:59I just, I don't think you can teach that.
05:01And I just, until they prove it, you can't convince me otherwise.
05:07I just, I don't, I think this Cavalier team is extremely talented.
05:10They're very good.
05:11They're going to win a lot of games this year.
05:13They're just not a tough basketball team.
05:15And until they prove that, I'm going to stand by that.
05:20Darrell Ryder, join us right now here on 92.3 The Fan.
05:23So let's talk Browns.
05:25We're having a big discussion about Deshaun Watson and whether they're winning in spite
05:28of him, because of him with those fourth quarter heroics.
05:32Where do you put it?
05:33Somewhere in the middle, because they're in those positions largely because of him.
05:38What do you mean by that, Darrell?
05:40I've seen people say that.
05:41Well, because they've needed, you know, the good news is Deshaun Watson has four game-winning
05:46fourth quarter drives.
05:47The bad news is the Browns and Deshaun Watson have needed those four fourth quarter drives.
05:51So credit where it's due, but also at the same time, it'd be nice if they could play from
05:56ahead from time to time.
05:58This is another test for them this week.
06:01Tennessee, their offense, not very good.
06:02They're just not a good football team.
06:05And let's see if they can go to Tennessee and handle their business.
06:09And this is a game where I feel like Deshaun Watson should play well and his supporting
06:13cast should be able to play well.
06:15And we can feel a little bit better about things going in at five and two next week to
06:20Pittsburgh, where they haven't won a game in the regular season since 2003.
06:25So, you know, and it's not all on Deshaun, but he, you know, the quarterback does take
06:32the blame and get the credit when things are either going bad or good.
06:35And there's just been way too much of a rollercoaster with Deshaun Watson.
06:40And he, the processing's got to get quicker still.
06:44He's still having problems seeing the middle of the field.
06:47But the good news is that he's not turning the football over and he is being ultra conservative
06:53with things and he's not taking chances.
06:57And he, but the bad news is he really seems at times gun shy throwing the ball.
07:02And you really saw that in the first half against the Baltimore Ravens last week.
07:07So, you know, I, again, I think he deserves credit for the late game heroics, but also
07:14at the same time, he deserves, you know, criticism for the fact that the, the offense tends to
07:20sputter for large segments of games.
07:25Darrell Ryder joining us here on the show.
07:27Damn it.
07:28What was I going to add?
07:29Oh yeah.
07:29That's the thing with Deshaun Watson is, you know, I've had, have him back and forth and
07:34I, and I go guys like, I don't think that they're winning in spite of him.
07:37I don't think they're winning because of him, but like, I'm also, I don't think that this
07:42is any sort of a endorsement of his future with the organization.
07:47Like, I do think the bottom can fall out because he's not a top third quarterback.
07:51I think he's somewhere to the middle of the back, to the back third, somewhere between
07:5517 and 32 on it at any given moment, Darrell.
07:59And I think with him, you know, you start to wonder, okay, do the fans, you know, is it,
08:08is it just people on the internet or is it real where fans either want to be a Superbowl
08:13contender or they want to just compete for the number one overall spot and that's it.
08:17Like I, I, I, I, I've mentioned another platform before another organization before I'll do
08:23it again.
08:23Cause you know, we've had Jay Crawford on the station before a lot of people are beating
08:27him up online and I'm thinking, yeah, I totally disagree with Jay, but I also go, man, considering
08:32the responses I've got, did he just say the quiet part out loud for every, for a lot of
08:37people?
08:37Cause I'm like, Hey, no one, you guys all begged to win and then we win.
08:41Well, I guess it's not pretty enough.
08:42Like no one said winning was going to be pretty well, they they're winning the way
08:45the Pittsburgh Steelers win games.
08:47And I'm fine with that right now, man.
08:49Right.
08:49I mean, this, this franchise has lost enough.
08:52Okay.
08:53Um, they are, they were a six games below 500 finish from like having twice as many losses
09:00than wins since coming back into the NFL.
09:03They they've done the, the tanking thing or the, the, the collecting assets and playing
09:09for draft picks thing before.
09:10And Oh, by the way, I just like to point out this quarterback class, much like last
09:15year, all of a sudden isn't looking all that great in college football right now.
09:19We went into this season once again, Hey, this is the class you want to have the number
09:23one pick in the draft for and all that.
09:25Yeah.
09:25It ain't playing out that way.
09:26So I really don't have a problem with the Browns winning games right now.
09:30And yes, the quarterback is going to be the missing piece to the puzzle.
09:34If this franchise is going to be able to compete at the highest level, right?
09:38Get where the guardians are, get where the Cavaliers are, right?
09:42If they're ever, they're going to need a better quarterback than what we've seen from Deshaun
09:48Watson.
09:48But right now this'll do their four and two chance to be five and two sure beats being
09:53two and four and two and five.
09:55And, you know, the season being over and, you know, us, you know, looking at mock drafts
10:02already.
10:03So, um, and, and I, I credit Todd Munkin for that.
10:06He, they're finding ways to win games and they're doing, you know, I understand what you're
10:12talking about.
10:12I understand what Jake Crawford is talking about all that, but again, the draft class isn't
10:16looking all that hot.
10:16Number one, number two, they're doing what we've asked them to do.
10:19We're, they're doing what we asked Kevin Stefanski to do, and that is just find ways to win
10:24games.
10:25Like it's not that hard.
10:27And well, that's what they've done here at the outset.
10:30Yeah.
10:30It's not been pretty.
10:31Um, you know, you've lost, you've worn down the fingernails in the fourth quarter, some
10:36of these games, but they're finding ways to win these games and that's what matters.
10:41And the next area of growth for them is I'd like to see them win the trap game this week.
10:47I know Jared Verst said yesterday, he didn't believe in trap games.
10:50He and I will respectfully disagree on that.
10:52See the New York jets game.
10:53That was a game that Cleveland Browns should have won.
10:55That's a game.
10:55The Browns gave away.
10:57No question about it.
10:58They had that game one in the fourth quarter.
11:00They gave it away in the final four minutes.
11:02That's on them.
11:03Don't go to Tennessee and repeat that and do that all over again.
11:06Go to Tennessee, kick the Titans, but come home five and two.
11:09If you want to be taken seriously, uh, as, as, uh, you know, really turning this program
11:14around here in Cleveland, that's what you got to do this weekend.
11:17I got like two and a half minutes, boy, it really pained you to have to ask Stephen vote
11:20that question yesterday.
11:21Didn't I felt bad because well, it took you a fit.
11:24They timed it.
11:25Kovac said, Kovac said, you dick 52 seconds.
11:28I asked go down.
11:29I didn't want to ask that question, man.
11:30I didn't.
11:31And you know, Chris Antonetti is giving me the, the death stare as I'm asking the question.
11:36Oh, whatever.
11:36Vote is laughing at me as I'm asking the question.
11:39I actually talked to Stephen afterwards and, and got a little perspective on where he's at on
11:43things.
11:43He's not taking that Mariner job and, and I'll keep the contents of the conversation
11:47that he and I had private.
11:50Uh, uh, but he knew the question was coming.
11:53He's not going to take the Mariner's job.
11:55Whoa.
11:59Daryl sounds like you have very privileged information.
12:02What a reporter.
12:04I, well, yeah, I mean, I wouldn't say privileged.
12:06I'm sure he just, he told the baseball writers the same thing when they had their, uh, closed
12:11door confab, but when we were done with it, but yeah, it's just a very, I got toward the
12:16end.
12:17There's this awkward silence in the room.
12:18Like, all right, well, I got to ask.
12:20Cause the phone's blowing up.
12:22You're going to the Seattle Mariners.
12:24Like we, we were, we were sitting there in the newsroom over at eight and it's like me,
12:29Kovach and Sable and, you know, Nick's just doing, I'm like, me and John are going,
12:32when are they going to ask the question?
12:33Who's going to ask the question?
12:35And then he goes, Daryl's asking the question.
12:36I go, you don't want to ask it either.
12:39I didn't want to ask, but had to, I mean, it's, it's out there.
12:43It's been talked about for a little bit.
12:45Had to ask the question.
12:46I kind of felt bad, but you know, you got a job to do.
12:49And Steven was gracious enough.
12:51He understood.
12:52Uh, Daryl, thank you so much for the time.
12:55Uh, by the way, Hey, would you play Mason Graham on Sunday?
12:59Um, or would you hold him out?
13:00I can't believe we're in that position.
13:02No, I mean, if, if, if he, if he's healthy and he's ready to go,
13:06absolutely.
13:07If you're, uh, if you're stretching it a little bit here with him and that
13:12injury, then I might hold him back.
13:14But if he's healthy and ready to go, yeah, you, you, you, you put your best
13:17players on the field.
13:18Same thing with Mike Hall.
13:19No, not Mike Hall.
13:20Quinch on Judkins.
13:21Yep.
13:21Quinch on and Dylan Sampson too.
13:23They might get Dylan Sampson back this week.
13:24We'll see.
13:25So maybe the, uh, the run game will be at, at full strength.
13:29And I don't know, maybe they can run the ball.
13:32What's that mean for Audrey Guestamay?
13:33Well, uh, might, uh, no.
13:36Come on.
13:37I scouted him.
13:38Is he better than Judkins?
13:39I actually said, I've never seen, I've never seen Audrey Guestamay score a
13:43touchdown live sober.
13:45Judkins.
13:45That happened.
13:46Judkins averaging three yards a carry this year.
13:49Yeah.
13:49Well, okay.
13:50Tone.
13:50I'm just saying, what are you trying to say?
13:53Uh, you said you're just saying, what are you trying to say?
13:55I was talking to Notre Dame fan the other day and they wondered if the Irish
13:59players better than the Buckeye.
14:02I like Notre Dame.
14:03You didn't ask me.
14:04You didn't ask me that question.
14:06I didn't tell you that answer.
14:07You're a Michigan fan.
14:07No, I'm not a Michigan fan.
14:09I'm not.
14:10You want Mike Hart to be out there.
14:12You're an, he's a coach.
14:14And you're an idiot.
14:15Is he?
14:15I think so.
14:16Oh.
14:17Tyrone Wheatley.
14:18Daryl, you're going to have to shut your own thing down.
14:20Daryl, thank you very much for the time.
14:22All the best.
14:22By the way, Ken, you took the hit from your son very well.
14:25Thank.
14:26Okay.
14:27I didn't see it.
14:28I didn't see it.
14:28He went, he went full assed into me and people were like, dude, he, Jason Pinkston, Brian
14:33Hoyer tweeted about it.
14:34Yeah.
14:35And they're like, dude, he lowered the shoulder on you.
14:36I go, yeah, I know.
14:37And someday he's going to be able to do that for real.
14:40So I'm glad there's going to be no cameras around because this was the last.
14:43That was bad.
14:44Daryl.
14:44It was tough.
14:46Daryl Ryder.
14:47And Daryl was brought to you by.
14:49Shibon Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
14:51The glorious Daryl Ryder.
14:53Wonderful man.
14:53We're all very fond of him, very free spirited, Daryl Ryder.
14:57What's your problem with Audrick Estime?
14:59No, I'm saying that this is a legitimate Notre Dame fan that was like, ah, I'd like to see
15:04more of him.
15:04Went to that Notre Dame Wake Forest game.
15:06He carried the ball like 27, 28 times.
15:08The PA guy, the pipe son, Audrick Estime.
15:12Oh, man.
15:14Smashed.
15:14Rough loss on Saturday night for fighting Irish.
15:17Let's see.
15:17It was busy.
15:19Couldn't see it.
15:20Coming up at nine o'clock, Nathan Zaguri going to join us on the show.
15:22Oh, there is some pushback.
15:24It's only one game.
15:26Is it?
15:27For the Cleveland Cavaliers?
15:28That Nathan Zaguri joins us at nine.
15:30Would he hold out Mason Graham for an extra game?
15:32Can you believe the Browns are in a position to maybe go, hey, you know what?
15:36Maybe we can load manage a guy with an injury.
15:39The Browns.
15:40I'm not talking about the Cavs.
15:41I'm not talking about the Guardians.
15:42The Browns at four and two.
15:44Might ask Nathan that question at nine on the fan.
15:47Have a good gr Heyman.
15:47Bye, guys.
