00:01Next tonight, a woman has spoken out for the first time about an alleged sexual assault by a monk who
00:07lived on Caldy Island off the coast of Pembrokeshire.
00:11Brother Titus, who denies the claims, is also accused of sexually assaulting an island employee, as well as giving women
00:18naked photos of himself.
00:20The allegations are in a new BBC podcast, Dark Island, written and presented by our social affairs correspondent, India Pollock.
00:30More than 50,000 people visit this tiny island each year.
00:34Caldy is owned by a small group of Cistercian monks, a denomination of the Catholic Church.
00:39Natalie Roberts was a regular visitor from the early 2000s.
00:43She doesn't want to appear on camera, but features in a new podcast called Dark Island.
00:48A monk called Brother Titus gave naked photos of himself to Natalie.
00:54She didn't know how to take it, but felt she couldn't complain as he was a monk.
00:58But she was stunned when, on a walk in 2016, she claims that Brother Titus sexually assaulted her several times
01:06over her clothes.
01:07I was so angry when I got to the other side, because I knew this was an absolute violation.
01:12You know, this wasn't spiritual, but this was his opportunity to just do that.
01:17I think the worst thing it did, India, if I'm completely honest, it took away my whole spiritual belief in
01:24Catholicism.
01:25Brother Titus denied the allegations, saying a woman who feels rejected can become very vicious.
01:32He said the pictures weren't sexual, but he'd reflect on his behaviour.
01:36Brother Titus also allegedly groped a former employee of the Abbey and made unwanted sexual advances.
01:43When confronted, it's claimed he said she was lucky to receive sexual attention from him and that she would lose
01:49her job if she complained.
01:51Titus again denied the allegations, saying the employee had made them up in the hope the monastery would pay her
01:58to keep quiet.
01:59The claims were investigated by police, but there was no further action.
02:04He's since been asked to leave the island and lives in another monastery.
02:08These allegations aren't the first time the order has made the news.
02:12Another monk, Thaddeus Kotick, was able to abuse children there over four decades in plain sight,
02:19because that abuse was not reported to the authorities until after he died.
02:23I'm very sorry for what they went through.
02:27And I would like to take the occasion to apologise for what they have gone through for the pain and
02:36the suffering.
02:37And since I became an abbot, I took safeguarding as my priority and I put everything in place so that
02:47it wouldn't happen again.
02:48Now, Father Jan says people who stay have to have criminal record checks and provide original identification.
02:55That was recommended after three other serious offenders also stayed on the island,
03:00including one man described as one of the most dangerous sexual predators in Britain.
03:05We asked the highest authority in the Catholic Church, the Pope, here at the Vatican in Rome, for a statement.
03:11They referred us elsewhere.
03:13We did get a reply from the head of the Cistercian Order, the abbot general, Don Bernardus Peters, who's also
03:19based here in Rome.
03:21He said he had profound regret for the abuse that took place on Colby Island
03:25and that safeguarding was a fundamental responsibility of each individual monastery as well as the order as a whole.
03:33Now, there are renewed calls for a police investigation into the abuse that took place by Kotick,
03:39with some saying that's the only chance left for the survivors to finally have justice.
03:46India Pollock with that report.
03:48And you can hear more on this story in the podcast series Dark Island,
03:52which is available to listen to now on BBC Sounds.
