00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:33I don't know whether you've stumbled across the story that I've heard,
00:36that there's a film in pre-production stage.
00:39It's not actually made yet, but they're getting ready,
00:42and it's going to be called Borg versus McEnroe, Rachel.
00:47It's all about that great 1980s Wimbledon final
00:51between those two great, great, great tennis players.
00:53Borg eventually raised the trophy,
00:56but it was a fight to the death, really.
00:59And, of course, being quite a lot of those sort of sporting films made,
01:03how they'll do this one, I don't know,
01:05because presumably whoever plays those characters, Borg and McEnroe,
01:09have got to be pretty good at tennis,
01:10or will they rely on archive footage? I don't know.
01:14If there was a film to be made about a sporting event,
01:18which one would you go for? Football.
01:21Well, yeah, it's got to be football.
01:22I mean, there's talk about making the Jamie Vardy life story.
01:26Already?
01:26It's quite interesting.
01:27Yeah, well, last season there was a lot of chatter about it.
01:30Yeah.
01:30Because he's, until 2012, he was in the conference.
01:34Amazing.
01:34And then, you know, beat, well, beat Ruben Nistro,
01:37his scoring record in most consecutive games,
01:39obviously won the league with Leicester.
01:41I mean, if you watch that story in a Hollywood movie,
01:44you would say it was ridiculous, and it couldn't possibly happen.
01:46All right.
01:47Now then, Rachel, we've got Jamie Washington back,
01:50student from Huddersfield, trained to be an English teacher,
01:52had a good win yesterday.
01:53First time out, what happened? 110.
01:56Well done, indeed.
01:58Good man.
01:58Now, you're up against Kate Strang,
02:00a support worker from Cooper in Five,
02:03who for many years, 20 years, I think,
02:05was a lead singer in a rock band.
02:07Yeah.
02:07Good for you.
02:08And you were performing all over Scotland, or...?
02:10Mainly in the north-east of Scotland.
02:12Yeah.
02:12Yeah.
02:12Good fun?
02:13Really good fun, yeah.
02:14And what sort of, you're a rocker.
02:16Yeah, rock and blues, 70s, 80s,
02:18and T-Rex, David Bowie, the classics.
02:21Good for you.
02:21Yeah.
02:22All right.
02:22Let's have a big round of applause for Kate and Jamie.
02:28And everyone in the corner there, Susie, of course, Susie,
02:31and former producer and talent agent,
02:33now a TV personality,
02:34and the best raconteur I've ever met,
02:37it's Michael Whitehall.
02:39Welcome back, Michael.
02:40And Leicester City supporter.
02:43Is that?
02:43Yes.
02:44Why?
02:44Well, 30 years for me,
02:47and 45 years for Mrs Whitehall.
02:51Yes.
02:51Who has always been a Leicester City supporter.
02:53I met her 30 years ago, supported Leicester.
02:56They've been a disaster every season.
02:59People have said to me,
03:00I cannot believe that you're a Leicester City supporter,
03:03and I always say, I can't believe I am either.
03:06They're such a terrible team.
03:07They are, but I'm still a supporter.
03:10And suddenly, last year, thanks to Claudio...
03:14Fantastic.
03:15But why was Mrs Whitehall...
03:17Is she from Leicester?
03:19Is she from Leicester?
03:20Not that I'm aware of.
03:23All right.
03:24Now then, Jamie, let's start with the letters game, shall we?
03:27Hi, Rachel.
03:28Hi, Jamie.

04:37How about Kate?
04:38Seven.
04:39A seven.

04:51Very good.
04:52And violets for Kate.
04:53Nice word.
04:53Michael and Susie.
04:55One more eight.
04:56Somebody who delivers a eulogy is a eulogist.
04:59Where are you?
05:01So, yep.
05:02A eulogist.
05:03Eight points to Jamie.
05:04And it's Kate's letters game.
05:06Kate.
05:06Hello, Rachel.
05:08Hi, Kate.

06:23F-A-U-L-T-E-R.
06:26Oh, unfortunately, that spelling, Kate, is not in.
06:31Just double-checking there.
06:32Yes, somebody who picks false is not a falter.
06:35Right.
06:36You can falter as in hesitate without you, so I have to dislike that, I'm sorry.
06:41Oh, that's bad luck.
06:41What about a horse that refuses to jump?
06:44Hmm, possibly called a falter.
06:47I don't know.
06:48Is that what you would call it?
06:50I'd call it a nuisance.
06:53Fourteen points to Jamie.
06:55Now then, Michael and Susie.
06:57You've got one that I think could apply to you, Nicholas.
07:01Flaunter.
07:03Because you quite like a bit of a flaunt.
07:05You reckon?
07:05Yeah, you could flaunt.
07:08Pull me up short if you see me doing it, will you?
07:11So, flaunter.
07:12Flaunter, yes.
07:13You can be that for eight.
07:14And Susie?
07:15There's natural for seven as well.
07:17Natural.
07:17I prefer natural, yeah.
07:19All right.
07:19Now, Jamie, it's the first numbers game.
07:22Could I have one from the top and five of us, please?
07:24Thank you, Jamie.

08:41which is Gary Moon.
08:43And the clue.
08:43Gary was an expert in the field of growing crops.
08:47Gary was an expert in the field of growing crops.
09:06Welcome back.
09:07Welcome back.
09:08I left with a clue.
09:09So, Gary was an expert in the field of growing crops.
09:12And the answer is agronomy.
09:15Agronomy.
09:15Susie?
09:16Yes.
09:16Agare meaning field.
09:18Yeah.
09:18And then the normal part is actually Greek for arranging.
09:20So it's all about field arranging originally.
09:23Well done.
09:23Thank you, Susie.
09:2414 plays 10.

10:47Now, Michael and Susie?
10:49Well, there's an eight and a nine.
10:51Oh.
10:52I'll start with the eight.
10:54Eight, sodomise is there for eight.
10:56And there's a nine, moodiness.
11:00Have you ever done?
11:01Moodiness.
11:07Very good.

11:40And a final vowel, please.
11:42And a final.
11:43U.
11:44Stand by.
12:16Jamie? A seven. A seven. And Kate? Six. You're six? Pirate.
12:22Pirate and rapture. Rapture. Lovely. Great word, isn't it? Rapture. Enraptured. Michael? Susie? Arbisa, we've got. Very good. Lots and
12:36lots of sevens, actually. Perturb is there. Rare bit. And a partier. Some of you enjoys a good party.
12:43A partier. 27 to 16. And now it's numbers. Numbers for Kate. I have two large and four small, please.
12:51Thank you, Kate. Two from the top row and four from the bottom ones.
12:55And for this round, the little ones are six, one, nine, and ten. And the big ones, one hundred and
13:03seventy-five. And the target, one hundred and eighty-seven.
13:07One, eight, seven.
13:09One, nine, and ten. And the big ones are six, one, and ten. Who do you want?
13:39Kate?
13:40187.
13:42187, Jamie?
13:43187.
13:44Kate?
13:45I said 9 minus 6 is 3.
13:48Yep.
13:48Minus 1 is the 2.
13:502.
13:50And then add everything up.
13:5110, 75 and 100.
13:53Lovely.
13:55Same way?
13:55Yep, same way.
13:56Yeah.
13:57Well done.
13:57Wow.
13:59So 37 plays, 26.
14:0337 to Kate's 26 as we turn to Michael.
14:07And Michael, juggling all those big TV stars, film stars, their needs, their egos and all
14:13the rest of it, those, you know, things didn't always go smoothly.
14:17Um, most of the time I think they made it.
14:21I mean, ego was, yeah, sometimes a bit of a problem.
14:24But I tried to keep my ego down, so, you know, it was, uh, it usually worked all right.
14:32But one story I do remember, um, there was an actress called Dorothy Tewson, who sadly
14:39is no longer with us.
14:41And we had a system in our office, because we used to get a lot of fan mail, that somebody
14:47would actually open the fan mail and make sure that there wasn't sort of abusive stuff
14:52in it.
14:53Because sometimes people wrote sort of, you know, not nice things to people.
14:57So we had, um, a man, well, he wasn't only there for that purpose.
15:01He was a bookkeeper.
15:03He was called Mr. Scutt.
15:05And Mr. Scutt's job was to open letters and just make sure that they were all right to
15:11forward on.
15:13One day, Mr. Scutt comes down to my office holding an envelope, which has been ripped
15:21open.
15:22And he says, I'm sorry, Michael, but I think I've, I shouldn't have opened this.
15:26It said Buckingham Palace at the top, and it had a seal on the back of it.
15:32And in it was a letter from the Lord Chamberlain's office asking Dorothy Tewson if she would like
15:39to become a Dame of the British Empire, and for a reply to that effect.
15:45And then she would become a DBE in the New Year's Honours.
15:49And this is in October, this letter arrives.
15:52So Stephen said, so what shall I do with it?
15:55And I said, well, I don't think you can stick a bit of sellotape on it and forward it, so
15:59you'd better leave it with me.
16:00So I turned to Mrs. Whitehall, who looked after the whole thing.
16:05She got a new envelope.
16:07She got one that looked like the original one.
16:11She, she got some sealing wax and put the seal and, it was a work of art.
16:19And then Hilary and I went round to Dorothy Tewson's house in the middle of the night.
16:25She had a whippet, which I didn't want to wake up, and she also had a burglar alarm.
16:32Anyway, I popped it through like that, and then we went off, we went to bed.
16:38Nothing happened.
16:39We didn't hear from anybody.
16:41And I thought, that's an absolute triumph.
16:44And indeed it was.
16:45At the end of December, when it was announced that she got it, she rang me and she said,
16:50have you seen the paper?
16:51And I said, no.
16:52She said, I've been made a dame of the British Empire.
16:55And I said, oh, Dossie, how wonderful.
16:57What wonderful news and what a lovely surprise.
17:03Lovely story.
17:04Right.
17:05Well done.
17:0937 plays.

18:34Adoring indeed.
18:35Yeah.
18:36That's a nice seven.
18:36And there is an eight there as well.
18:38Roaming.
18:38If you act as a roady for a band, you are roaming for them.
18:42Well, that would give you an eight.
18:42Thank you, Kate.
18:45Thank you, Kate.

25:26Jamie? Eight. An eight. Kate? Seven. Your seven? Loiters. Loiters and? Outliers. Outliers. Excellent, yes, great count on words. It
25:37is indeed. Well done. Well done. Michael, Susie, any advances? You've got another eight.
25:47Yes, triolettes are there as well, so pretty word for poems of eight lines, with the first line recurring as
25:53the fourth and seventh and so on, so every third line. That will give you another eight.
25:57A triolette? Triolette. Well, well. That's new on me. 68 page 50. And Susie, origins of words. And today?
26:07Today, I'm going to look back to almost a millennium and a half ago when a Teutonic horde came over
26:16the hills into Italy. And these were the Longbeards, or Longobardi, as they were called.
26:22And they'd been named, in fact, by Julius Caesar. And they established the town of Lombardi from that name Longobardi.
26:30Lombardi soon became a money lending centre.
26:34The Lombards were absolutely famous for their skills in the financial sector. And pawn shops became known as lumber shops.
26:42First of all, Lombard shops and then lumber shops eventually.
26:44This Lombard street in London was once renowned for its pawnbroking shops. It's now a key street in the city,
26:51often seen as London's Wall Street.
26:53And it's got a history of going back to medieval times of merchant banking. And in Paris too, there's a
26:59Rue de Lombard. I think in San Francisco, there's a Lombard street, which is very crooked.
27:03Not sure whether it was anything to do with financial crookery.
27:07But today, when we talk about lumber being a pile of trinkets or an array of articles that have fallen
27:14into disuse or just a bit of a miscellaneous hodgepodge of different things,
27:19that too looks back probably to the goods that were once sold in pawnbroking shops.
27:24This isn't the same as the lumber that lumberjacks carry, although that too may well go back to the idea
27:31of timber sawn into sort of rough planks again,
27:33things are slightly in a mishmash or disarray. Finally, landlubber might think might be linked. Sadly, probably not.
27:42That goes back to a very, very old word, lubber, which meant to spoil. But one of my favourite words
27:47means an awkward or unskilled sailor,
27:49or indeed somebody who knows nothing about the sea at all. But I love the idea that Lombardy is rooted
27:54in those long beards of people who conquered it a very long time ago.
27:57That's wonderful. Wonderful.
28:02Thank you, Susie. 68 plays. 50. Kate on 50. And it's Kate's letters game.
