00:15Attracting investment is only the beginning.
00:18Ensuring businesses can operate with confidence,
00:21overcome challenges and find room to grow is just as important.
00:25From the experiences of Japanese investors
00:27to the perspectives of European businesses,
00:30Selangor's investment ecosystem must continue to evolve
00:33to support long-term commitment and new opportunities.
00:37Today, we look at how investor aftercare
00:40and stronger international business ties
00:42can help Selangor go beyond growth and drive reinvestment.
00:48Hello, I'm Fahna Shea and you're watching Investment Insider
00:52brought to you by Invest Selangor
00:53where we look at investing in Selangor's next decade.
00:57Now, today I'm joined by Mr. Sunao Shima or Shima-san,
01:01Chairman of Tiga Aekai and Association
01:04representing the Japanese business community here in Selangor.
01:08Thank you so much, Shima-san, for joining us.
01:11I want to know a little bit more about Tiga Aekai here.
01:14So to start, tell us a little bit about the association
01:17and Tiga Aekai's operation here in Selangor
01:20and how the company was established.
01:21Maybe we can start that.
01:22Okay, the Tiga Aekai consists of 71 regular member companies,
01:28all the Japanese companies.
01:30The history is in 1989,
01:34only four companies start.
01:36Just discuss about the local member's salary
01:40or something, the regulation,
01:42or how to answer to the government requirement.
01:49But after that, mainly the Sharon Science Park manufacturing company,
01:55Japanese company, come together
01:57and a regular meeting on the third Wednesday every month started.
02:05and everything, everything, many issues, discussion, purpose.
02:10Then, so that is a third Wednesday meeting,
02:16the association.
02:17So we call Tiga Aekai.
02:20Third Wednesday Kai, Tiga Aekai.
02:22Then, now is a main activity is a monthly meeting,
02:28study session, information exchange and concern and interest,
02:33member companies,
02:34and the company presentation from each member companies.
02:37Right.
02:38And the network with MIDA
02:40or a corporation with various institutes of Selangor state
02:44through the investment goal.
02:47and the networking event among the member companies,
02:50golf or a social gathering or exchange,
02:53the exchange with Penan Tiga Aekai.
02:57That's kind of the activity.
02:59And that is a Tiga Aekai.
03:01Right.
03:01Thank you so much for that information on Tiga Aekai.
03:04You have been established here for quite a while
03:07and you have been managing sort of Japanese investors here in Selangor state.
03:12So maybe we can talk a little bit about, you know,
03:16investing here is one thing,
03:17but also with investment here comes also challenges of operations
03:22and making sure that we can engage with government stakeholders.
03:26So from your experience,
03:27what are some of the practical difficulties that a business can face
03:31when it comes to sustaining operations here in Selangor?
03:34Your experience with, you know, all your members.
03:37We already have a basic setup such as a manpower facility,
03:42utilities and transportations.
03:45But however, once such a setup stops,
03:49immediately our operation will be stopped.
03:54And that is a very, you know, very severe issue.
03:58So the utility stoppage, such as electricity, city water or natural gas,
04:06sometimes it happens by the technical fault.
04:08And also the facility damaged by the natural disaster, such as the floor,
04:15or the manpower shortage has happened by the pandemic a few years ago.
04:19So how to make such a setup stable is one of the keys to continue our business here.
04:28Also, the family needs to get authority approval for some matters like plant extension or government,
04:37the policy and so on.
04:41These matters mostly need the varieties of agencies.
04:44And most, this is where the process may take longer.
04:50That is one of the issues for us.
04:53I mean, those are very specific challenges, you know, that all investors have to face,
04:57I think, when setting up operations, you know, in Malaysia,
05:00the difficulties that you have to manage different stakeholders,
05:04you have to manage different kind of agencies.
05:06So I want to talk about how these challenges are addressed,
05:09specifically the kind of support that the Japanese business community here get.
05:13So in your experience, could you share a specific instance
05:17when your company faced an operational issue, for example, like you mentioned,
05:21and you needed assistance from either Invest Salango or government agencies,
05:25what happened and how was it resolved?
05:29The detailed way is case by case.
05:32But I believe the Invest Salango or the other agency
05:35always make the best plan and strategy how to fix our problems.
05:42And also, the Invest Salango initiates a dialogue every year with TIGAYAKAI.
05:49Depending on issues we list up,
05:52they communicate with the related parties such as MBSA or MIDA, etc.,
05:57and set up the discussion opportunity with them.
06:02That has been very helpful for the TIGAYAKAI members
06:06to solve issues through the smooth communication
06:10with the related government body or agency.
06:14Right.
06:15I think I want to draw in a little bit of your experience here,
06:18and you can be completely honest here.
06:21You know, in your experience,
06:23what made that sort of support helpful?
06:25If you can pinpoint one or two things,
06:27whether it was having the right point of contact,
06:30getting a timely response,
06:32or having different agencies work together,
06:34was there anything that stood out to you as being the most helpful
06:38and also anything that could probably have handled better?
06:41So we can all learn from experiences from investors here.
06:45The most important point is speed,
06:48especially for the plant operation related issues.
06:51Right.
06:51If the utility stoppage happened,
06:55even though it's a temporary action,
06:58it should be taken for restarting the operation as soon as possible.
07:04At the same time,
07:05the preventive action for recurrence are important.
07:09For the business continuity,
07:11also the consistency and the coordination between government agencies
07:16are equally essential to prevent from the unnecessary delay of the permit
07:25and licensing or regulatory requirements.
07:30For a long-term planning and stable business relationship,
07:35liability, transparency,
07:37and follow-through are particularly important.
07:43Right.
07:44I mean, I like how the first thing that you mentioned is speed
07:47because we actually talked to a lot of companies and agencies
07:50and investors here within Investment Insider
07:54and a lot of them actually mentioned speed
07:57as being the most important part
07:59for investors to continue investing here in Selangor.
08:02So it's true that you said that a lot of them
08:05you know, maintain that speed and predictability
08:09is why they stay here in Selangor.
08:12Right.
08:12So we talk about the challenges that investors here in Selangor face
08:16and also how they are addressed.
08:19I want to talk a little bit or expand a little bit more about,
08:22you know, your experience as an investor here.
08:25What is one area that you believe Selangor can truly improve
08:30to make it easier for companies to sustain their operations
08:33and even grow here, right?
08:35And what difference would that improvement actually make?
08:40For a manufacturer,
08:42the operational stability is the most important point.
08:46So if the problem is efficiently solved with preventive actions,
08:52it builds our confidence
08:55and strength our willingness to continue investing in Selangor.
09:02So we consider not only the present course,
09:04but also the stability and predictability of the business environment.
09:11So this confidence has an important role for the future planning.
09:15The key factor are the stable and predictable policies
09:21and efficient government support
09:24and skilled local workforce
09:27and strong infrastructure and supply chain
09:30and continuous investor aftercare.
09:34And lastly, the opportunity for the sustainable growth.
09:38That means the competitive operating environment
09:43or adoption of the new technologies and so on.
09:47Right.
09:48Investor aftercare, I think, is one thing that stood out to me
09:51because that's what Invest Selangor has been focusing on,
09:55making sure that investors are truly at home here
09:59when they are in Selangor.
10:01And also you mentioned sustainability just now,
10:03which is a key factor as well
10:05to ensure that people can continue to stay here and expand and grow.
10:09I think my last question to you is,
10:12what do you think distinguishes Selangor
10:16as a location that attracts investors
10:18from one that earns just an investor confidence
10:22to stay and grow over the long term?
10:25What differentiates Selangor than the rest?
10:27For us, the good investment destination
10:30is not just a place
10:32where we can establish a factory or start business.
10:37It is a place where we can operate with confidence
10:40and grow sustainability
10:42and see a future for our company.
10:46So the key factors are
10:49the stability,
10:50the clear and constant policy,
10:53and reliability,
10:55the efficient infrastructure and skilled workforce
10:58and the timely support
10:59when operational challenges arise.
11:03And lastly,
11:04long-term relationship,
11:06the continuous support
11:08existing investors
11:09even after the initial investment
11:11is completed.
11:13Right.
11:14Thank you so much,
11:15Himasan,
11:16your insight.
11:17And I think we get sort of a look
11:18at how Japanese business community here
11:21are operating in Selangor,
11:22as well as the improvements
11:24that agencies and stakeholders
11:26need to make
11:26to ensure that Selangor
11:28remain the investment destination
11:32in the region.
11:33Thank you so much, Himasan,
11:34for your time.
11:35We'll go for a quick break.
11:37Stay tuned.
11:53Hello and welcome back to Investment Insider.
11:56Now I'm joined by Kati Ferry,
11:58Chief Executive Officer
11:59of Eurocham Malaysia.
12:01Now, thank you so much
12:02for joining us, Kati.
12:03So I wanted to ask you
12:04from Eurocham Malaysia's perspective,
12:07what makes Selangor attractive
12:09to European investors
12:11and which sectors
12:12have the greatest potential
12:14for further collaboration?
12:16Thank you, Farhana.
12:17First of all,
12:17it's a pleasure to be here
12:19and thank you for pronouncing
12:21my name correctly.
12:22I am the Chief Executive Officer
12:24of Eurocham Malaysia.
12:25If you're aware,
12:26Eurocham Malaysia has been
12:28in this country since 1993.
12:31Currently, we have 27 member states.
12:33We represent the companies
12:34from 27 member states
12:35and in our network,
12:37there are more than 1,600 companies.
12:40What has made these companies
12:41come to Malaysia?
12:42Well, plenty of things.
12:43We see that Malaysia
12:45is a very strong, reliable partner
12:46to the European companies.
12:48They have been here for decades,
12:50more than,
12:50I can give you examples,
12:52Shell has been here
12:52more than 100 years,
12:53Bosch as well,
12:54100 years,
12:54Ostrom 100 years.
12:55But why these companies,
12:57they keep coming
12:57is because we see
12:58Selangor has a very strong potential.
13:01There is the industrial cluster.
13:02We have the supply chain.
13:04There's the resilience
13:05in the logistics
13:06and the probability.
13:08We see that there
13:09is a strong talent capability.
13:11We also see that,
13:14I did mention the logistics
13:15and the hub,
13:16but we also see
13:17the digital infrastructure.
13:19Malaysia has been
13:20quite aggressive
13:21in their digital
13:24renewable and transformation
13:26and we see that the companies
13:28are very much on top of that.
13:29Right.
13:30So it seems that,
13:31you know,
13:31companies also,
13:32European companies
13:33also feel at home here
13:34with all the factors
13:35that you mentioned just now,
13:36but I'm sure there are also
13:37challenges for a lot of companies
13:39to settle down here.
13:40So I want to talk
13:41a little bit about that.
13:42So from Eurocharm Malaysia's
13:43perspective,
13:44or engagement
13:45with European businesses,
13:47what are the challenges
13:48that they highlight
13:49that companies face
13:50when setting up operations here
13:52and wanting to expand here
13:53and how are they addressed?
13:54When companies come here,
13:56of course,
13:56you have several bodies
13:57that are supporting
13:58their establishment.
14:00We look at Maida,
14:00we talk to Investar Angor
14:01or the other investment bodies
14:03in the country
14:04and that is an amazing support.
14:06However,
14:08from the company's perspective,
14:10it would be great
14:11to have a more
14:14faster decision-making.
14:15Right, okay.
14:16Yes,
14:16because the speed to business,
14:18you can't wait for it.
14:19Is it because
14:20there's a lot of red tape?
14:22I don't know
14:23if it's a red tape,
14:24it's just the waiting time
14:25between decisions.
14:26It's not only the red tape.
14:28The procedures are there,
14:29we follow them,
14:30it's just the waiting time
14:31between the decisions.
14:35One other thing
14:36that companies have mentioned,
14:38and it's not something
14:39that happens everywhere.
14:41Let's face it,
14:42whenever a company goes
14:43and invests in a country,
14:44it's never the ideal part.
14:47Talent development
14:48is very important.
14:49We see that the need
14:51for skilled, capable talent
14:53is actually everywhere
14:54in the world.
14:55And from European companies'
14:57perspective,
14:58they see that as a gap,
14:59but they're also trying
15:00to bridge that gap.
15:01They're bringing many programs
15:03to support the skilling,
15:05the upskilling,
15:06reskilling of the Malaysian talent
15:08to make sure that it's supporting
15:11their business here in Malaysia.
15:12Right.
15:13So, obviously,
15:14Malaysia work with Invest Solango
15:16here and other stakeholders
15:18as well to strengthen
15:19business connection,
15:21facilitate partnership
15:23and encourage more European companies
15:24to set foot here
15:26to explore investment opportunities
15:27here in Solango.
15:29What do you make of that
15:31sort of collaboration and support?
15:32Well, I'm happy to say that
15:33because we just concluded
15:35on the 13th of October,
15:36the EU Malaysia Business Day,
15:38Solango in Focus.
15:39This is the flagship event
15:40organized by EU delegation
15:41and Eurochamp
15:42for the last three years.
15:43Two years ago,
15:44it was in Kuching,
15:45we invest in Sarawak.
15:46Last year, it was in Penang,
15:47we invest in Penang.
15:48And this year was one of the biggest
15:50and the most impactful.
15:52And it happened right here in KLCC.
15:54So, strategically chosen date
15:56before Sibs was launched.
15:59And we brought the European companies,
16:01we brought the Malaysian companies
16:03that are part of the supply chain
16:04of these European companies
16:05and we also brought the decision parties.
16:08We had panels with
16:10Selangor Smart Delivery Unit,
16:13with Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre.
16:15We brought together
16:17the Invest Selangor team
16:19to connect with the European companies
16:21that are established here
16:22to see if they want to expand,
16:23what is the next step for them to do.
16:25So, this is exactly what we do,
16:27make sure that there is a connection,
16:29that there is a discussion,
16:31a continuous engagement
16:32between the established companies
16:34and the decision makers
16:36and the policy makers.
16:37That's great.
16:38I mean, it's amazing to hear
16:39there's already sort of a strong foundation
16:41between European companies
16:42and Selangor companies here.
16:44And Invest Selangor is at the centre of it
16:46and other stakeholders as well,
16:47managing and navigating
16:48sort of this partnership very well, right?
16:51I want to forward looking a little bit,
16:53looking ahead.
16:54If we look at areas or sectors
16:56that we can collaborate more,
16:58would you mind elaborating a little bit
16:59about if there's any potential collaboration
17:02that we can look at
17:03maybe in the near future
17:04between European companies and Selangor?
17:08Absolutely.
17:08And there's something that I want to mention.
17:10The values between EU and Malaysia
17:13are very much aligned.
17:15And probably that's why
17:16the companies that are here,
17:17they have been thriving since,
17:19I don't know if you know,
17:19but there are more than 550 companies,
17:21European companies
17:22that are established in Selangor,
17:23more than 1,800 European companies
17:26in Malaysia.
17:27But the ones in Selangor,
17:28they generate over 51 billion ringgit in a year.
17:31Right.
17:32That's amazing.
17:32So, we know that Selangor,
17:34it's a substantial focus
17:37for the European companies
17:39and it's been working
17:40and it will continue working.
17:42Of course,
17:43there's always place for improvement, right?
17:45There's always more choices
17:47and more options to grow.
17:49And one of them,
17:50I'll give it to you,
17:51CECONDUCT is an advanced manufacturing.
17:56And during our event
17:57on EU Malaysia Business Day,
17:59NXP has announced
18:00a new wave of investment,
18:02300 million euros
18:04that will be improved.
18:07implemented in the new facility
18:09in Perteling Jaya.
18:10So, we see that
18:12the confidence
18:13and the trust
18:14from the investors
18:15are there.
18:16They're established,
18:17they're growing
18:18and they continue investing.
18:20So, that relationship
18:21is already there.
18:22Now, what can we do
18:24to grow the other investments?
18:26So, semiconductors,
18:28advanced manufacturing.
18:29Another area,
18:31another industry
18:31would be digital and AI.
18:34Right.
18:34We have strong brands,
18:36strong companies in Malaysia
18:36like Ericsson,
18:38SAP, Nokia.
18:39They've been here
18:39for many decades.
18:41Ericsson for five decades,
18:42I think.
18:43Nokia as well.
18:44SAP, I can't remember.
18:47But we know
18:48they bring the knowledge.
18:50they bring the support
18:53when it comes
18:53to digital transformation
18:55to the companies.
18:57I don't know
18:57if you're aware,
18:58but 82% of the coverage
19:01of Wi-Fi coverage
19:03in Malaysia
19:04has been implemented
19:06by Ericsson
19:07together with DNB,
19:08Digital National Bar Hutt.
19:10So, we're very proud
19:12when we see
19:12that companies
19:14with that advanced technology
19:17are coming to Malaysia
19:18and they're also
19:18supporting Malaysia's growth.
19:20Another areas of expertise
19:23where we can grow further
19:25would be life sciences
19:26and medical technology.
19:28We have already established
19:30companies like
19:30B. Brown in Penang.
19:32They've been there
19:32for 30 over years
19:33and they build medical devices.
19:3685% of their production
19:38is already going
19:39to more than 120 countries
19:41globally.
19:43So, in Malaysia,
19:44we can see
19:44that what the companies
19:46are building,
19:46in European companies,
19:47it actually goes global.
19:49So, we have the expertise,
19:50we have the talent,
19:51we have the knowledge,
19:52but we can grow.
19:55Another industry
19:56that we can definitely grow
20:00will be the logistics
20:02and supply chain.
20:04Right.
20:05I don't know
20:06if you're aware,
20:06DHL,
20:07they have already implemented
20:08the KLIA gateway.
20:11There was more than,
20:14maybe my numbers
20:15are a bit off,
20:15but I know
20:16there was definitely
20:1760 million ringgit
20:19and probably
20:20more than that
20:21where they invested
20:22a few years back
20:23to grow another gateway.
20:26So, logistics,
20:30digital and AI,
20:32semiconductors
20:32and advanced manufacturing,
20:34life sciences
20:35and medical technology.
20:39There will be one more.
20:41Anything from the green sector?
20:42Of course,
20:43that's where I was going.
20:44So,
20:45as you are aware,
20:46European Union values
20:48stands very much
20:49with sustainability.
20:51This was on the agenda
20:52since European Union
20:53was formed,
20:54was founded.
20:55Sustainability
20:56and circular economy
20:58or circularity.
20:59So,
21:00we know
21:01that there is
21:02so much more potential
21:03to grow into
21:03the green technology,
21:05how we can develop
21:06more renewable energies
21:08and not only solar
21:09but if we can look
21:11into other options,
21:13there are already,
21:13you have companies here
21:14like Siemens Energy
21:15who can support
21:17that transition
21:17from coal energy
21:20to solar
21:21to nuclear
21:22at some point.
21:24Yeah,
21:25definitely a lot
21:25of untapped potential
21:26in green sector,
21:27I feel.
21:28And the sectors
21:28that you mentioned
21:29just now,
21:29semiconductor,
21:30logistics,
21:31and those are already
21:32strong foundations
21:32that we have here
21:33in Malaysia
21:34and could only
21:35be strengthened more
21:36with the presence
21:36of our European friends.
21:40We don't come here
21:41to grow ourselves,
21:43we come here
21:44to grow the ecosystem.
21:46When European companies
21:47they establish
21:48in a country,
21:48they make sure
21:49that the community
21:49grows together with them.
21:51Yeah.
21:51So,
21:52if I can give an example
21:54because it's not
21:55very often talked
21:56about,
21:57there is a company
21:58in Janda Baik,
22:00the company's name
22:00is called
22:01Electric Solar.
22:02They draw copper
22:03they came here
22:0430 years ago.
22:05They specifically
22:06chose Janda Baik
22:07because of the
22:08temperature difference
22:09so the copper
22:10does not oxidate.
22:12When they came there
22:13Janda Baik
22:14was quite wild scenery.
22:17Right,
22:17okay.
22:17Thanks to them
22:18they are employing
22:201,000 people,
22:21all locals,
22:22all from Janda Baik.
22:23They have built
22:24a nursery,
22:25a kindergarten,
22:26they even have
22:27bomba,
22:28they even have
22:29an ambulance
22:30that they bought
22:30to serve the region
22:31in Janda Baik
22:32and also they have
22:33a farm,
22:34a small farm
22:35where they grow
22:36fresh veggies
22:37and everything
22:38is on the
22:38accounts of the company.
22:40So,
22:41what I want to say
22:42is that
22:42when a European company
22:44goes into a market
22:45and they
22:46grow their business
22:47they also make sure
22:48that the community
22:49thrives with them.
22:50Right.
22:50It's about growing
22:51together I feel.
22:52I mean,
22:52European and Malaysia
22:54have had,
22:55you know,
22:56a long-lasting
22:57relationship.
22:57We've always been
22:58good friends
22:58and I think
22:59when it comes to
23:00investment,
23:01especially in Salangor,
23:02there's a lot
23:02of areas
23:03that we can
23:03explore
23:04and there's
23:04a lot of areas
23:05that we are already
23:05having strong
23:07partnerships as well.
23:08So,
23:08it's very amazing
23:09to hear all
23:10this potential
23:11collaboration
23:12and also
23:13ongoing
23:16collaborations
23:16and also
23:17untapped areas
23:18that we can
23:18sort of look to
23:19in the future as well.
23:21We have
23:21a few more minutes
23:23for one last
23:23question maybe.
23:24I would like
23:25to know
23:25your hopes
23:26or your messages
23:27for investors
23:28they are planning
23:29to set up
23:29operations here
23:30in Malaysia
23:30if you have
23:31any advice
23:31for them
23:32and also
23:33maybe for
23:33Salangor companies
23:35as well
23:35who would like
23:36to,
23:37you know,
23:37mix well
23:38with European
23:39companies
23:39and explore
23:40this kind of
23:41partnership
23:41that you mentioned.
23:43You're so right
23:44to talk about that
23:45because we are
23:45at a very
23:46strategic inflection
23:47point.
23:47Right now
23:48there are the
23:49free trade agreement
23:49negotiations
23:50between European Union
23:51and Malaysia.
23:52We have concluded
23:53the fifth round
23:55in Brussels
23:56in September.
23:57the next round
23:58will happen
23:59in Malaysia
24:00when the EU
24:01delegation is coming
24:01here.
24:02That will be
24:02in January
24:02and there are
24:04very good vibes
24:06from both sides
24:07that this will
24:07be signed
24:08next year
24:08if not in Q2
24:10maybe Q3
24:10of next year.
24:12So we already
24:12have a very strong
24:13trade relation
24:15with Malaysia.
24:17Imagine
24:17if once the
24:18free trade agreement
24:19gets signed
24:20and ratified
24:21the massive
24:23potential of
24:25investment
24:25that it will unlock
24:26is actually huge.
24:27and what I want
24:29to say to the
24:29European investors
24:30is that Malaysia
24:31is a very trusted
24:32reliable partner
24:33and do not be shy
24:35to ask to come
24:36here to see
24:36what they can do.
24:38We have several
24:39trade missions
24:41going from
24:42every single
24:43member state.
24:44I am Romanian
24:45and at the end
24:46of the month
24:47I have a delegation
24:48of 12 companies
24:49coming to Malaysia
24:50because they're
24:51interested about it
24:51what is happening
24:52here.
24:52It has become
24:53such an interesting
24:54hub to European
24:55companies.
24:57For Malaysian
24:58companies that
24:59are looking to
25:00collaborate with
25:01European companies
25:02definitely
25:03the door is
25:05more than open.
25:06There is no door
25:07whatsoever.
25:09If you know
25:10the import and export
25:13between Malaysia
25:13and EU
25:14actually Malaysia
25:15stands very well.
25:17I will not say
25:18the numbers
25:19because I will
25:19definitely make
25:20them wrong
25:20but Malaysia
25:20stays very
25:21very well.
25:22So what I want
25:23to say is that
25:24in one year's
25:25time and maybe
25:26two years
25:26there will be
25:27much more
25:28investments
25:28coming to
25:29Malaysia
25:29and hopefully
25:30we will also
25:31see Malaysian
25:32companies going
25:33towards Europe.
25:34That's what
25:35the free trade
25:35agreement does.
25:36Thank you so much
25:37Cathy for your
25:37insights and for
25:38sharing with us
25:39not only the
25:41strong foundations
25:41that we have
25:42here between
25:42EU and
25:43Malaysia
25:44and even
25:44Selangor
25:45but also
25:45potential areas
25:47we can look at
25:47and potential
25:48collaborations
25:49we can explore.
25:50I think that's
25:51all the time
25:51we have on
25:52Investment Insider
25:53for this episode.
25:53Thank you so much
25:54for watching.
25:54We'll see you again.
26:43We'll see you again.
26:52You
