00:02Striking, colourful and making themselves comfortably at home in the River Torrens.
00:08It's suspected noxious and illegal koi carp found at Hackney and Dernan Court this week
00:13were dumped by their owners.
00:15It is a significant fine if you're caught with these animals and particularly if you're
00:19caught releasing them into a natural system.
00:22Walk that up as far as you can get it.
00:24Work is now underway to remove the koi, along with other unwanted fish.
00:28We do catch a number of goldfish, so that is one species that we've picked up in our
00:32surveys over the years.
00:34Yes, people do release them and we understand that there's a self-sustaining population within
00:39the river.
00:39A type of carp, the koi impacts native plants and fish.
00:43They make the water murky as their bottom feeders and they churn up the riverbed.
00:48The discovery of the koi comes as Green Adelaides say the river is almost ready for the reintroduction
00:53of platypus.
00:54They were here originally, but due to the misuse of the watercourse over the years and the
01:01degradation of the watercourse, they disappeared very early on after settlement.
01:06Now we think it's in a state where we can bring them back.
01:09Absolutely, thank you.
01:09Many of you guys.
01:09Just try to touch my place.
01:09All right, let's go to the river.
01:09I'm excited.
01:09All right, now let's go from the river.
01:09And let's go to the river.
01:09You can reach the river.
01:10You can't really enjoy the river.
01:10We can change the river.
