00:01it's basically what it says on the box it's a plug-in solar unit or a plug-in battery unit
00:07that you can buy in your local hardware store perhaps even ikea as soon as next year and you
00:14buy it take it home and plug it into your powerpoint if it's plug-in solar unit you can
00:19put it on your balcony in your backyard a back shed on the and and soak up that good clean
00:26in cheap solar energy and start using it in your house to run your appliances so it runs appliances
00:32within your home batteries plug-in batteries are similar but they allow you to soak up the cheap
00:38clean energy that's on the grid during the day from our abundant rooftop solar and use it at night when
00:45the energy prices are typically higher so you actually get to cheat the system and get cheaper
00:51power day and night with these devices so what would this mean for renters who normally don't
00:56get a say on whether or not their home has solar panels it's really difficult in australia for
01:01renters right now because they're missing out on the savings of rooftop solar we've got the highest
01:06uptake of rooftop solar and home batteries in the world in australia per capita but a third of aussies
01:13are renters and they're missing out on those solar savings so this will enable them to take control back
01:19of their energy bills and start to save three to four hundred dollars a year on their energy bill
01:25with a plug-in solar unit and about double that with a plug-in battery unit and how much does
01:31this
01:31cost to install well you don't need to get them installed that's part of the beauty of it you don't
01:35need to pay for an electrician to install them you can plug them in yourself to your normal powerpoint
01:40and a unit for a plug-in solar unit will be about eight hundred to twelve hundred dollars so you'll
01:46be
01:46able to pay that device off within three years and after that it's just you know pure profit or pure
01:52discount on your energy bill what work needs to be done to make sure that households can actually
01:58implement plug-in solar you know it can be very strict rules on what you can put on an apartment
02:03balcony for example how do you get landlords and body corporates on board it's a really good question
02:10and in germany they did the work to make sure that strata uh rules enable people to put plug-in
02:17solar
02:18on their balconies and so that they don't have arguments with their landlords about this they've
02:23made those strata laws specifically cater to enable plug-in solar on balconies uh we want to see that
02:30happen in australia by the first of july 2027 so wa has fired the starting gun they've gone out first
02:37saying that they're going to enable plug-in solar this should help to really put a rocket up the
02:42rest of the energy ministers across the country and get them to make an announcement we're hoping
02:47very very soon about the rest of australians so we can't have western australians having a technology
02:53that the rest of us can't access and it's a safe technology there's already a million units of these
02:58across germany they're in the uk they're in the united states they're going to happen across the ditch in
03:04new zealand in the next 12 months they've said so we need australians to keep up yeah are there risks
03:10are there safety measures that need to be implemented sure there are safety standards and that's super
03:15important and they've already done it in germany germany's some of the safest technology uptake in
03:20the world and so much that we can learn from them to modify there's a few standards that need to
03:27be
03:27approved testing that's being done right now for australian conditions to make sure that these are delivered safely
