00:00Malaysia Customs Department says they have seized 30 servers equipped with advanced AI chips suspected of violating export controls.
00:08Officials believe a syndicate is using Malaysia as a transit hub to re-export the chips to another Asian country.
00:16The shipment, worth US$12.11 million, or about RM50 million, was intercepted at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport during
00:26an inspection on October 15.
00:31Authorities believe the syndicate attempted to evade detection by declaring the servers as ordinary electronic components.
00:37Malaysia introduced permit requirements for the export, transit and transshipment of high-performance AI chips of US origin last year,
00:44under pressure from the US to ensure sensitive technology isn't rerouted to China through third countries.
00:50The servers have been brought into Malaysia from an undisclosed Asian country under a single airway bill and were intended
00:55for re-export to another Asian country.
00:57This is the fifth case involving advanced AI chips detected this year, with the combined value of seizures exceeding RM100
01:04million.
01:05A Malaysian firm that facilitated the shipment has been called in to assist investigations.
