Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper says she's "worried" the government's £100 payment to households to help with energy bills is "not targeted very well". Cooper says the measure announced in yesterday's Budget might go to some "incredibly wealthy people" in the targeted council tax bands at the "expense of the taxpayer". Report by Keechl. 00:00Well, look, I'm really pleased the government has done something on energy bills, but I really worry that it is
00:05not targeted very well.
00:06And what we can see by his choice to use council tax bands is that some incredibly wealthy people who
00:12have maybe retired early and downsized to a small flap might get help at the expense of the taxpayer.
00:17But about 1.4 million people who are on low incomes, but in bigger houses, are set to lose out.
00:23That is not good for the public and it's not good for the taxpayer.
00:25So what we Liberal Democrats have proposed was an essential energy guarantee that would give an average of £100, but
00:32that would mean that wealthier families would receive less than that and the most vulnerable on low incomes and disabled
00:38would receive up to £180 a year.
00:40That would have been more progressive, better for the public, better for the taxpayer this winter.
