00:01All five Supreme Court Associate Justices aspiring for Chief Justice make it to the shortlist.
00:07Gibot Yadouro snubs the welcoming event for China's representative to the ASEAN Defense
00:11Minister's meeting. The Department of Agriculture says the weakening peso will increase prices of
00:17imports such as rice and fertilizer. Benjamin Netanyahu will likely remain as Israel's
00:22caretaker Prime Minister. And Alex Ayala pulls off a thrilling win over Australia's Talia Gibson
00:28in the Torre Pan-Pacific Open.
00:37All five Supreme Court Associate Justices aspiring to become the country's next Chief Justice make it
00:42to the Judicial and Bar Council's shortlist. This is confirmed by SE spokesperson Camille King to
00:48Rappler. This means the following are eligible to be chosen as the country's 28th Chief Justice
00:53to succeed Alexander Jesmundo who is retiring on November 6. They are Senior Associate Justice
00:58Marvick Leonen, Associate Justices Alfredo Benjamin Caguiwa, Rodil Zalameda, Japardi Maampao,
01:05and Jose Maidas Marquez. The Judiciary is a co-equal and independent branch of the government but
01:10under the rules, it's the President who appoints people to the Judiciary. President Ferdinand Marcos
01:15Jr. will pick his appointee from this shortlist provided by the JBC. Marcos is until February
01:202027 or 90 days to pick the next Chief Magistrate. Leonen will serve as Acting Chief Justice once
01:27Jesmundo retires. After screening applicants, the JBC held the public interviews for the five
01:32qualified candidates on October 22 and 26 with deliberations held afterwards.
01:39Philippines Defense Secretary Dibot Teodoro snubs the welcoming event of China's defense attache to
01:44Manila, Senior Captain Yang Lei. Instead, it was Undersecretary Ignacio Madriaga who welcomed
01:49China's representative to the ASEAN Defense Minister's Meeting or ADMM in Cebu. Before China arrived,
01:55Teodoro himself welcomed representatives of ADMM's plus partners to the meeting, even deputy ministers
02:00ranked below him. For the first time, China sent only a defense attache to ADMM, ASEAN's premier
02:06platform for defense diplomacy. Chinese Communist Party tabloid Global Times says it was the lowest
02:12level Chinese representation since its inaugural session in 2010. The tabloid also quotes analysts
02:18and says the downgraded attendance can be attributed to the Philippines. Teodoro is among the loudest
02:24critics of Beijing in the Philippine government. China imposed sanctions on Teodoro and his immediate
02:28family after he supposedly made irresponsible remarks on China. Department of Agriculture spokesman Arnel
02:36de Mesa says the weakening peso will push up prices of imports such as rice, fertilizer, and other farm
02:41goods. He adds the impact on imported rice prices may be felt possibly by November. The Philippines breached
02:48a record low of 64 pesos and 17 centavos to the dollar on October 27. Among the key farm inputs
02:55that
02:55will take a hit is the country's fertilizer needs, which are mostly imported. Meantime, Ebon Foundation
03:01Executive Director Sonny Afrika criticizes the lack of government support to agriculture and local
03:05industries. Afrika points out the dip in the DA's proposed 2027 budget, which he described as
03:12chronic neglect. The DA sought a leaner budget in 2027, down by 8 percent compared to the previous
03:18year's allocation. Afrika says,
03:20The peso is weak because the economy is weak. We need more and more dollars to import what we don't
03:25produce, but produce less and less to export and earn dollars from.
03:31Benjamin Netanyahu will likely remain as Israel's caretaker prime minister after unexpectedly strong
03:36backing among Jewish voters. This despite his right-wing bloc losing its preliminary majority.
03:42With nearly 86 percent of votes tallied Wednesday, October 28, Israel's three main broadcasters projected
03:48Netanyahu's bloc would win 53 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, well ahead of the 48 for rival Gadi
03:55Eisenkot's opposition bloc. Parties representing Arab Israelis were projected to win an unprecedented
04:0119 seats, leaving Eisenkot little realistic path to power without their broad backing.
04:06The results could still change as counting continues, but Eisenkot's bloc of anti-Netanyahu
04:11parties, ranging from the center-left to the hard-right, had fallen short of pre-election
04:15polls that forecast a tight race. Netanyahu would remain caretaker prime minister during any coalition
04:21negotiations, and potentially until another election next year. While a caretaker government
04:26faces some constraints, experts say it retains powers, including over the war with Iran.
04:32Filipina tennis star Alex Ayala pulled off a thrilling win over Australia's Talia Gibson
04:37in the Torre Pan-Pacific Open Round of 16 match in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday, October 28.
04:43Ayala lost the first set to the world number 38, 4-6, but bounced back in the next two sets,
04:48winning 6-2, 6-0 to seal the victory. She will now face Diana Schneider of Russia in the quarterfinals
04:54on Friday, October 30. Before Ayala made her Torre Pan-Pacific Open debut, she suffered a second round
05:00exit at the Ningbo Open in China on October 22.
05:04And that's today's wrap.
