00:08Welcome to MojoPlays, and it's time for our Jaws to hit the ground.
00:12Resident Evil is a series known for epic moments, and also corny moments.
00:16So whether our Jaws hit the floor in disbelief of how great a plot reveal was,
00:19or our Jaws hit the floor in disbelief that someone approved a particularly cringy joke,
00:24these are the 20 most WTF moments in Resident Evil games.
00:27Let's go!
00:29The infamous live-action Resident Evil.
00:31Captain Wesker, Jill, and myself, we don't know where Barry is.
00:41Before you'd even explore the Spencer Mansion,
00:43the original RE treated players to something truly unforgettable,
00:46a live-action introduction filmed like a bargain bin horror movie.
00:50Actors dressed as S.T.A.R.S. members run around a forest, discover a severed hand,
00:54and react to attacks with astonishingly dramatic expressions.
00:57The great new footage, strange editing, and heroic character introductions
01:01feel like a student film that somehow got included in a major PlayStation release.
01:05Despite what the RE superfans argue, Capcom clearly wanted to make a terrifying cinematic experience.
01:11Instead, they accidentally created one of gaming's greatest pieces of accidental comedy,
01:15even if some of the superfans think they did it on purpose.
01:18They did not.
01:19Stop saying they did.
01:29Ethan reattaches his hand like nothing happened, Resident Evil Village.
01:35We've already seen someone else staple Ethan's hand back on in RE7,
01:39but Village takes it to another level by having him do it himself, with fairly minimal reaction to it.
01:43That would normally be the end of someone's adventuring career.
01:47Ethan simply pours some healing liquid onto the wound, presses everything together, and
01:50carries on.
01:51His coat sleeve even seems remarkably cooperative about the entire procedure.
01:55It's one of the funniest medical emergencies in gaming, because nobody pauses to explain it.
02:00Ethan has more important things to worry about than basic human anatomy.
02:15Jill's dramatic nemesis one-liner, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis.
02:23Nemesis has spent the whole adventure chasing Jill around Raccoon City while growling the same word,
02:28STARS.
02:29So when she finally gets the opportunity to finish him, Jill delivers a suitably dramatic response,
02:34promising to give him STARS.
02:36It's a gloriously cheesy line, especially when paired with the weapon she's about to fire.
02:40What exactly does giving somebody STARS mean in this situation?
02:43I have my theories, but I guess it doesn't matter.
02:45It's the kind of action movie dialogue that sounds brilliant after you've spent hours being pursued by a giant mutant.
02:51Jill has earned the right to say something ridiculous, but we've also earned the right to roll our eyes at
02:55her.
02:55You want STARS? I'll give you STARS.
03:01The Keeper keeps writing after infection, Resident Evil.
03:06A dining room.
03:08Here's one that's always bothered me.
03:11Most documents scattered around the Spencer Mansion are straightforward records of scientific disasters.
03:15Then you discover The Keeper's Diary, which follows an unfortunate employee as infection slowly destroys his mind.
03:21His entries grow shorter, messier, and increasingly disturbing until the final words suggest he's lost his humanity.
03:27It's a creepy way to show somebody becoming a zombie without having to witness the transformation.
03:31There's one strange detail. The man keeps updating his diary, even when his thoughts have almost disappeared.
03:38Imagine losing the ability to speak properly, but still remembering your daily writing schedule.
03:41It's so absurd and cringy that I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd written GRRRR.
03:51Ashley offers Leon some overtime, Resident Evil 4.
04:00After enduring an island full of parasites, explosions, and murderous villages, Leon finally gets Ashley to safety.
04:06This should be the moment everybody relaxes and celebrates surviving.
04:10Instead, Ashley casually asks whether Leon wants some overtime, and her meaning is definitely not administrative paperwork.
04:17It's kissing and curdling.
04:18Leon politely refuses bringing their rescue mission to a wonderfully awkward finish.
04:22Considering he spent the entire adventure protecting the president's daughter, that's probably the safest answer he's given all day.
04:27The 2023 remake leaves the exchange behind, but the original ending remains iconic.
04:32Who wrote this?
04:33So, uh, after you take me back to my place, how about we do some, um, overtime?
04:39Heh, sorry.
04:42Steve's meltdown over his father, Resident Evil Code Veronica.
04:46Wah! Wait, wait! Don't shoot!
04:49Who are you?
04:51Steve Burnside's relationship with his father is tragic, and the game gives him an awful moment when the man reappears
04:56as a zombie.
04:57Steve hesitates, Claire is forced to react, and eventually, he shoots his infected dad.
05:02It's heartbreaking material on paper, but unfortunately Steve's explosive screaming and exaggerated movements turn the scene into something resembling a
05:09melodrama on crack.
05:11You understand what the writers wanted you to feel, but the delivery is so theatrical that it's difficult to concentrate.
05:17Few characters have ever processed grief with so much bellyaching.
05:21Father!
05:28The opera singing leech monster, Resident Evil Zero.
05:31I wonder how those aren't people who react to this.
05:40A train full of infected creatures is already a nightmare.
05:44Then, a mysterious young man appears and begins singing dramatically while swarms of leeches respond to him.
05:48Eventually, we learn he's actually a mass of parasites carrying the identity and memories of murdered researcher James Marcus.
05:54Cool, but still, why the opera singing?
05:56It's a fascinating bit of monster science delivered with the seriousness of a grand opera.
06:02Why does a horrifying biological organism feel compelled to perform musical numbers?
06:05Nobody really knows.
06:07Rebecca and Billy are fighting for their lives while their enemy behaves like he's auditioning for the lead role in
06:11Hamilton.
06:19Jake boxes a giant monster at Resident Evil 6.
06:31Ustanak has spent most of Jake's campaign acting like an unstoppable nightmare,
06:36returning with horrifying weapons and fresh ways to ruin his day.
06:39Eventually, the confrontation reaches a facility surrounded by lava.
06:43We've seen this before.
06:44Jake decides the sensible solution is to fight the creature with his fists.
06:48Suddenly, this bioweapon is trading punches with a human who should have reconsidered his career.
06:53The sequence is ridiculous, flashy, but also satisfying.
06:56You can practically hear the soundtrack changing from survival horror to boxing championship.
07:01Maybe Albert Wesker's greatest genetic contribution wasn't superhuman strength.
07:05It was passing down a refusal to use common sense.
07:15Jake escapes a tank on a motorcycle, Resident Evil 6.
07:22Yeah!
07:23Continuing with Jake's insanity, during his and Sherry's campaign,
07:27a tank smashes its way through a building and turns the escape into complete action movie nonsense.
07:32The pair eventually flee on a motorcycle, taking ridiculous jumps and racing through deadly hazards.
07:37There's a moment involving a helicopter that makes you wonder whether the laws of physics have taken the day off.
07:42Every few seconds, the game introduces another impossible stunt and expects you to keep up.
07:47It's entertaining, but the franchise has definitely traveled a long way from slowly opening doors in Spencer Mansion.
07:59The giant baby that swallows you, Resident Evil Village.
08:07The moment you think House Beneviento can't possibly get any more unsettling, you hear crying somewhere in the darkness.
08:14Then an enormous, deformed baby creature crawls into view, dragging itself along the floor while searching for Ethan.
08:19This WTF is pure fear and a moment that is arguably perfect in the sometimes imperfect game.
08:26You've had your weapons taken away, so fighting is not an option.
08:29All you can do is hide, run and pray the giant infant doesn't catch you.
08:33Its mouth is large enough to swallow you whole, which is an image nobody needed before bedtime.
08:43Sheva's questionable alternate costume, Resident Evil 5.
08:49Destination coordinates?
08:51Down squares up ahead.
08:52Unlocking bonus costumes is a series tradition, but one of Sheva El Amor's outfits raised eyebrows.
08:58Her revealing tribal costume replaces the capable agent's practical equipment with a highly sexualized fantasy look,
09:05and critics have questioned its racial stereotype.
09:08The game offers another costume inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, making the wardrobe feel even more random.
09:13It's odd, especially considering that Sheva is introduced as a serious professional trying to contain a deadly outbreak.
09:19What mission briefing could possibly justify these clothing choices?
09:22Sometimes bonus unlockables are harmless fun.
09:25Other times you wonder whether Capcom is run by frat dudes.
09:34I saw someone, but they ran away.
09:38Leon discovers professional wrestling, Resident Evil 4.
09:48Leon Kennedy begins his mission carrying firearms and a perfectly respectable combat knife.
09:53Before long, however, he's performing wrestling moves on a parasite-infected enemy.
09:58Stun certain opponents and you can unleash a suplex.
10:01A genuine-to-God suplex, sending their heads crashing into the ground like they're competing in a championship match.
10:07It's spectacular.
10:08Sure, it's effective as well, and completely absurd in this type of game.
10:13One minute Leon is searching a gloomy castle for the president's daughter,
10:16and the next he's treating cultists like opponents at WrestleMania.
10:22Claire falls for Steve, Resident Evil Code, Veronica.
10:25Oh nothing, just a giant cockroach that had to be stepped on.
10:28Claire Redfield has escaped a city-wide outbreak and travelled to another nightmare filled with monsters.
10:33Naturally, the story decides this is an opportunity for romance.
10:36Enter Steve Burnside, a teenager whose combination of emotional outbursts, questionable decisions and constant complaining make him an obvious love
10:44interest.
10:45For anyone who's a moron, his eventual transformation and confession are meant to deliver a devastating tragedy.
10:51Yet the relationship develops so awkwardly that it's difficult to read the intended chemistry properly.
10:57Claire spends much of the game surviving danger, while Steve pierces her ears with his whiny voice.
11:08Ethan was already dead, Resident Evil Village.
11:10What's going on?
11:16So it's there?
11:19Remember our entry, when we said Ethan survived crazy wounds?
11:22Well, it does technically have an explanation, but the explanation turns out to be even stranger than the injuries.
11:27Evelyn reveals that Jack Baker killed Ethan during their first encounter in Louisiana, and the mould subsequently restored his body.
11:33That means the man you've been controlling across two games has effectively been living on borrowed fungal biology.
11:39Suddenly all those miraculous recoveries make sense.
11:42It's an outrageous twist, but it's an answer to a long-running joke about Ethan's durability, and it made our
11:48jaws drop.
11:53The ending where Leon dies, Resident Evil Requiem.
11:57Leon!
11:59Oh no!
12:02Hey!
12:03It's me!
12:04It's Grace!
12:05Please wake up!
12:07After surviving decades of outbreaks, Leon Kennedy can meet an unexpectedly brutal end in Resident Evil Requiem.
12:14Near the finale, Grace must decide whether to destroy or release Alpus.
12:18Choose destruction, and the facility begins collapsing while Leon helps Grace escape.
12:22Xeno then catches Leon and shoots him, ending the legendary survivor story with shocking suddenness and a jaw-dropping WTF
12:30from every player.
12:32Thankfully, this is the game's bad, non-canonical ending.
12:35You can revisit the choice, release Alpus, and see Leon survive instead.
12:39Still, watching one of the series' most indestructible heroes go down is startling, especially when you aren't aware that you
12:46can go back and try again.
12:47Like I was.
12:49On my first playthrough.
13:01Heisenberg becomes a scrap metal nightmare at Resident Evil Village.
13:04What the?
13:14Carl Heisenberg doesn't simply transform into a boss monster.
13:17He uses his magnetic powers to build a gigantic, snarling machine made from twisted metal and industrial wreckage.
13:23Meanwhile, Ethan gets to fight back using a bizarre little armored vehicle fitted with some serious weaponry.
13:29Suddenly, a gothic horror game has turned into a battle between two machines outside a junkyard.
13:34It's enormous, it's loud, it's magnificently excessive.
13:37You can almost forget that only a few hours earlier you were hiding from a giant baby in a basement.
13:42What the f*** is going on right now?
13:54Joe Baker solves everything with punches, Resident Evil 7, Biohazard, End of Zoe DLC.
14:02You don't know what you're talking about.
14:04You don't get it!
14:05You think?
14:06I don't know who you people are with all these monsters running around here.
14:13Ethan Winters needed guns, explosives and an unreasonable amount of medicine to survive the Baker family.
14:20Joe Baker, on the other hand, has a much simpler strategy.
14:22Punch everything until it stops moving.
14:25In the end of Zoe expansion, Jack's brother marches through the swamp, battering molded monsters with his fists.
14:30He even takes on a monstrous version of Jack in a brutal showdown.
14:35It's like somebody accidentally installed a boxing game inside a survival horror expansion.
14:39Better yet, Joe's fighting style actually works.
14:41Maybe Umbrella spent decades developing bioweapons because nobody suggested introducing them to a very angry uncle.
14:53Barry's legendary dialogue, Resident Evil.
14:55Jill, here's a lockpick.
14:58It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.
15:02Barry Burton is supposed to be an experienced member of an elite police unit, yet his dialogue sounds like someone
15:08trying to improvise during an emergency.
15:10He hands Jill a lockpick and proudly calls her the master of unlocking, despite her needing him to provide the
15:16equipment.
15:16Later, after saving her from a crushing ceiling trap, he jokes that she nearly became a Jill sandwich.
15:22Neither line is appropriate for the situation, which makes both unforgettable.
15:26Barry might not have been the mansion's best conversationalist, but he became its most quotable resident.
15:31Oh, Barry!
15:34That was too close. You were almost a Jill sandwich.
15:38You're right.
15:39A giant block of tofu fights zombies Resident Evil 2.
15:47What do you unlock after mastering one of survival horror's most demanding challenges?
15:51Not another elite soldier, but a wobbly block of tofu.
15:55The secret tofu survivor scenario sends a ridiculous white rectangle through a zombie-infested escape route armed with a knife
16:02and almost nothing else.
16:04It's incredibly difficult, which somehow makes the absurdity even better.
16:07Enemies are trying to devour something that's already technically food, and the player has to take this seriously to survive.
16:13Capcom could have rewarded skilled fans with a dramatic new character, but instead they made dinner fight for its life.
16:22Chris punches a boulder Resident Evil 5.
16:30I should have killed you years ago.
16:35Chris.
16:35Chris Redfield has muscles, determination, and no understanding of how rocks work.
16:41Near the end of Resident Evil 5, he needs to move an enormous boulder beside flowing lava.
16:47After pushing fails to do the job, he begins repeatedly punching the thing until it finally shifts.
16:52It's an astonishing sight.
16:54One man winning an argument with geology through sheer upper body strength.
16:57The moment became so legendary that Resident Evil Village even has Heisenberg mock Chris for it.
17:03You know a scene has reached peak nonsense when the franchise's own villains start making jokes about it.
17:19What's the most relevant, though?
